Parents and educators know that when stories are fun and engaging, kids spend more time reading. But what if the books you choose for your children or students not only entertain but also teach? Imagine finding stories that combine the life lessons of Aesop's Fables with the appealing characters and compelling adventures of beloved classics. Don Winn's award-winning picture books are just such a find.
Don Winn's Sir Kaye the Boy Knight series, starring the young knight Sir Kaye Balfour, is full of fun, exciting adventures that appeal to even the most reluctant reader. Kaye's beloved but absent father is his inspiration, and he strives to meet challenges with the values his chivalrous father taught him. His best pal, Reggie, who is dyslexic and also struggles with low self-esteem, often surprises himself by his ability to make meaningful contributions to those around him. The Sir Kaye series is unique because it features characters learning to meet life's challenges without magic or superpowers. These young heroes deal with internal questions and uncertainty as they work through the events they face, and each one finds his own way. The books are fun and enjoyed by any reader, but they are particular favorites of kids who need heroes dealing with difficulties like their own: dyslexia, learning challenges, absentee parents, being targets of bullying, or struggling with low self-esteem.
Don has been writing for over 20 years. A dyslexic reader and writer himself, Don works tirelessly to encourage struggling young readers to embrace their love of stories and to keep on reading!

Superhero is about a little boy who thinks he can be a hero and fight all the evil villains and save the innocent people. He dreams about being a hero, but as the story progresses, he finds out he is still scared and doesn't have the confidence he had before. He calls out for his dad and his dad comes to the rescue to save him from the dream is having.
I think this book can be useful in explaining how anyone can be a hero and find ways to help people around. Superheroes are not just those who have special powers that we see on t.v or in movies, but can be someone, like your parents. I used this book as part of my tutoring session with my student and think this was a great book to start off a discussion about real superheroes.
The little boy, main character has tension and internal conflicts, person to person conflicts that he endures throughout the story. He realizes that there are some things he cannot fight against without the help of others. I think the themes that are present in this story allows the readers to understand that heroes can be anyone, not just superficial characters that we see on t.v. This book showed that parents can be a hero to their own children.
Many children are grown up with seeing superheroes that have these special powers, but this book has a moral idea that everyone can learn by reading this book. I think this is a good read for both children and older individuals.
Of all of Don Winn’s wonderful children’s books, this is the one most likely to make you cry. In Superhero, we meet a little boy who dreams of being a superhero. However, when his dreams turn into nightmares, it is his father who becomes the true superhero by being there to protect and comfort his young son. In only a few pages, this book reinforces parental roles and reminds children that their parents, especially dads in this case, are always there for their kids. Additionally, the book starts a dialogue about what a real superhero is made of. Kids will learn that you don’t need superpowers to be a hero, and that the real heroes are everyday people just like their parents. Superhero is a must-read for young boys and girls of every age.
