This book about homelessness is different in that the main character, a little girl, Emily, and her mother escape from their abusive father/husband to a house for battered wives. The story is told from Emily's point of view as she adjusts to living with other women and their children until they can find a place of their own to move to. The pencilled illustrations are in shades of gray, with the text in red, an odd combination. I wish the story had been told in a more engaging way. Nevertheless, I wish this book were still in print so that I could order it for my library, as I've never found any other quite like it for setting.

3. Emily comes to a Women's community house with her mother, after her parents fight a lot and her father abuses mother. At first, Emily is so scared to live there without daddy, but she gets along soon with everyone's help. When she walks out the place to go to a new apartment with her mother, she sees a terrified boy new to the place so she whispers to him, "It's okay. You're safe here."
4. I think this book gives so much hope and courage for children who might have been going through a similar thing. Children must live in a place where they accept to be and think is safe.
