Reading this for story is like eating candy for dinner: you'll get a rush at first and then feel terrible afterwards. This is the proverbial "porn on paper" for the severely heteronormative.
The writing style is heavily flawed, but it leaves you thoroughly titillated. The men's packages are always "impressive" and everything is constantly "exquisite," except for that one ex who has to be the embodiment of every male douchebag ever and who "the muscle fairy had not blessed." Sometimes the choice of words is just plain giggle inducing (in a sad way): "pulsating woman's flesh"; "wonderful dream tool sticking out of his crotch"; "breasts that trembled at his closeness"; "innermost textures"; and the list goes on. There's tantra and kama sutra and all these wonderful things that men can do for their women to make then feel good, which brings me to my next point.
The so-called story is nothing more than a heavy-handed tool for preaching about how men don't please their women. Alana's lack of womanhood, or whatever, is not due to any real intimacy issues. She's not stoic or an overthinker; she doesn't have any ingrained prejudice against sex. Nope. Her problem is that she keeps picking men who just want to thrust their lovesticks into her. The Genies' job then becomes as simple as foreplay techniques. Once the ex comes back, and boy is he the stereotype, Alana has the chance to prove her prowess by grabbing his balls (literally) and going into a speech about "erogenous zones."
The worst part is how monogamous everything is despite the illusion of a menage. The Genies, for example, lose their memories after every woman they're with "graduates." This forces them to love each woman like she's their one and only. On the flip side, Alana, our dear sexually limited protagonist, is instructed that she's going to have sex with only one of the Genies (the two alternate between who "fucks" and who "sucks" with every woman they work on). Additionally, once you get to the end, everyone gets paired off with a single partner. Everyone. And then the forces of time and space and monogamy makes everyone lose their memories so that they forget how much they loved each other and concentrate on loving their one true partner.
Based on story alone, I'd give it 2 stars because it's mainly light and fluffy and, okay, I liked the characters in spite of how flat they were. And even though the ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth, the extra star is because, yes, this is good smut and should be enjoyed as smut. A lot of it turned me on, even as my eyes glazed over at the shoddy writing. Then again, 3 stars may still be too generous for the less forgiving reader.
