Words are life and death. That's what they taught Harlen Rodes the first day at Mercroft Academy-at a school wrapped in mystery. At Mercroft Academy, Harlen is introduced to the art of using a Verum, a powerful device that can manipulate reality. But power also comes with great danger. The danger that allows words to become real. Real enough to create. Real enough to destroy.Real enough to kill.

Academy of Breath and Fire is a thrilling mystery novel that drew me in right from the get go. I was instantly drawn to the Verum and how it works. The book starts with the death of Aleks Gregorovich. A mystery man takes over his empire. Agents Ryan Dupont and Frank Smith are tasked with solving the case. Ryan used to go to school with Aleks. And they both knew how to use the Verum. An item that makes you able to wordsmith. It's the art of shaping reality through words.
We also follow Harlen Rhodes. He got kicked out of his 3rd school in three years. His father sends him to Mercroft Academy, where he will learn the art of wordsmithing. And where the other students will become his family.
The book alternates between Harlen and Ryan.
I love that first moment at the school with Harlen. Where Harlen sees a teacher, Harscrabble, make a boy fly with his verum. The whole Verum thing is fascinating to me.
Ryan quickly figures out the answers to the murder lie at Mercroft Academy. And he knows headmaster Dorian Mercroft. They also went to school together. Dorian gives him all the info he needs about the teacher. But he keeps the info about the Verum secret.
And that is where the story kickstarts. Harlen gets bullied by Jason. And we see him find his way in Mercroft Academy. We see him submit to Jason and slowly find his strength and resolve throughout the book. I love how he sees certain things that make Mercroft a huge unknown place. A place full of secrets.
I liked how tenacious and fiery Ryan is. How he even bents the rules to get closer to the truth.
This book was such a rush and I was utterly consumed by it. And the mystery surrounding Immanuel Harscrabble kept me on my toes.
There is only one thing that bothered me a little bit was how the author approached how Ryan was named throughout the book. It shifted between Ryan and Agent Dupont. He did explain to me why he did it. And I understand it. But I think I would have prefered some continuity. Or maybe it's my autism speaking up. But yeah, I would have preferred one of the two. It felt more intimate to me when he used Ryan's actual name. It made me feel his emotions more strongly than the distant Agent Dupont.
But I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to read the sequel of this brilliant series. 5 BIG stars from me!
Dive into the captivating world of "Academy of Breath and Fire," a gripping mystery novel that immediately captivates the reader. The story kicks off with the sudden demise of Aleks Gregorovich, paving the way for a mysterious figure to seize control of his vast empire. The narrative unfolds through the perspectives of Harlen Rhodes and Agent Ryan Dupont, with chapters seamlessly shifting between their viewpoints, providing a comprehensive view of the unfolding events at all times. Agents Ryan Dupont and Frank Smith have been assigned the responsibility of unraveling the mystery at hand. Ryan and Aleks were former schoolmates, both well-versed in the art of utilizing the Verum - a powerful tool enabling one to manipulate reality through the mastery of language. The concept of Verum never fails to captivate my imagination. Ryan's sharp intellect swiftly unravels the truth behind the murder at Mercroft Academy, while his acquaintance with headmaster Dorian Mercroft proves advantageous. Having been former schoolmates, Dorian willingly provides Ryan with all the necessary information regarding the teacher. However, he discreetly conceals the classified details concerning the Verum. Harlen Rhodes is someone we keep an eye on. After being expelled from his third school in as many years, his father decides to enroll him in Mercroft Academy to hone his skills in wordsmithing. It's here that he will find a new sense of belonging among his fellow students, who will become like family to him. This book is a thrilling ride that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It manages to be fast-paced without overwhelming the reader. The concept is fresh and the plot is captivating. The characters are easy to connect with and the unexpected twists keep you on the edge of your seat. Even though I usually don't read this genre, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It definitely exceeded all my expectations and was absolutely worth the read.
“Wordsmithing is the art of shaping reality through words” What if you could change the world with just the things that you said? How amazing world that could be……or how terrifying??? This science fiction/murdery mystery/dark academia book delves into the world of wordsmithing at Mercroft Academy. A boarding school housed in a castle. Think Harry Potter vibes. We follow Harlem there as he discovers a new way of thinking. The dual POV includes Agent Ryan DuPont as he investigates a murder linked to the Academy. He has his own dark past linked with the school. This book draws you in and holds your attention. The second half seems to fly by. The book does end in a bit of a dangle to set up a possible next book. Hopefully we will get to see where the story goes from here.
Academy of Breath and Fire by Kristofer Hellmeister
I was contacted to review this books and I am honestly so glad I was asked to do so! It was described as similar to Harry Potter with crime and mystery fantasy and crime are my two favourite genres and I have been obsessed!
It’s taken me a while to finish but that’s purely because I had multiple books on the go and I have a 4 month old! But I have loved it each time I picked back uo where I left! I loved the characters and the big twist at the end, I knew who was behind it all but I did not expect who committed it!
A mystery that will leave you guessing until the end!
This phenomenal tale develops between several characters points of view, which adds multiple pieces to the complex plot. I took my time with this book, dissecting each piece of the story into small chunks to properly analyze each part of the puzzle, but was still entirely blown away by the depth and development. This book is a rollercoaster of twists and turns that will leave your head spinning.
If you’re looking for a mysterious thriller of epic proportions ina dark academia setting with a sci-fi flair, this one is for you!
✦ I was contacted by the author to read and provide this book an honest review ✦
Harlen Rhodes, a young hacker expelled from his last three schools, is sent to Mercroft Academy by his father. At Mercroft, students learn to wield the Verum, a powerful device that manipulates reality through words. When FBI agent Ryan Dupont, a former Mercroft student, is assigned to investigate the murder of a classmate, he believes the key to the case lies within his old school. Desperate for answers, Ryan turns to Harlen for help. The unlikely duo teams up to uncover the truth, both within the academy and about themselves.
I loved the world-building and mystery in this book! The Verum is such a unique device that really drew me in. Harlen and Ryan are definitely flawed characters but grow a lot throughout the book. While the dual POVs sometimes became a bit confusing and don’t intersect until midway through the story, it didn’t interrupt the flow of the narrative too much and gave me a ton of insight into both protagonists. I completely suspected someone else as the murderer, so the ending was definitely a twist! I’d 100% recommend this book to anyone looking for Harry Potter meets sci-fi meets murder mystery, so check it out if that’s your vibe!
I will be honest. I went into this book with trepidation as I am not the biggest Sci fi fan. So I fired up my kindle and I was sucked into this story of fantasy, murder, mystery, of men fighting to reimagine reality. It was fantastic! It is a little bit of a chunker at almost 500 pages, but those pages fly by. I read that people were comparing this to a Mashup of star wars with Harry Potter, but i would like to add the movie Inception to that list. The author did an excellent job of character and world building. I loved it! I am definitely a Sci fi convert now. P.S. I think that this would make an excellent movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This was a very well written sci-fi mystery which had a very unique world build too.
It followed Harlen Rhodes, a boy who attends the prestigious Mercroft academy and FBI agent Ryan DuPont who has an unexpected history with the school, giving him insider information but more often than not giving him bias and getting him in more trouble than an FBI agent needs to be in.
This book was quite hard to follow at first, and I must admit certain parts still stump me a little but once it got going (and I wrapped my head around it more) it really excelled for me.
The most intriguing aspect of this book was definitely the verum, a device that allows the user to manipulate reality through the power of words. It takes skill to master it and it has a lot of rules and regulations to it, which is needed for a concept as powerful as the verum.
I love reading about both Harlen and Ryan’s story, seeing how they were separate and then ultimately seeing both povs blend into one. I must admit I liked Harlen side much more than Ryan’s. But maybe that’s just because Harlen had the luxury of not needing to solve some huge organised crime plot relating to the verum. Also because i personally thought it was a little harder to follow Ryan’s story, but it was good nonetheless
It’s a new type of book for me - I don’t usually read sci fi but I really enjoyed this! I particularly enjoyed the ending - the way that Harlen and Jason bury the hatchet and work together, as well as finally Harlen and Ryan finally meeting fully and also working together felt a long time coming. The entire book they’re like passing ships so to see them together in the end was definitely gratifying
Overall it was a very good read, and a very interesting story and I would recommend it!
I was extremely surprised by this book. When I first started reading it, I wasn't sure that I was going to like it because it starts off with these men having a meeting and they end up getting unalived. That is not what I thought the book was about, but I kept on reading, and I'm so glad that I did, because I ended up loving it. It's a story about Harlen who gets kicked out of all the boarding schools, and then his dad sends him to Mercroft Academy, and that's where all the twists and turns start happening. Harlen knows that he will be kicked out of this school also, but then finds that he likes it there. Then Jason comes into the picture, and Jason is a bully who makes being at the Academy really hard on Harlen. Then we find out about the Verum and what it can do, and you have Ryan, who is a former student of Mercroft Academy, turned fbi agent. He is investigating the unalivings and believes that someone at Mercroft is behind it. It is a great keep you on the edge of your seat kind of book that will keep you on your toes. The ending really surprised me. I did not see it coming. Would I recommend this book to my friends? Absolutely, because it is really good and worth the read.
Words are life and death. Students are taught that on their first day at Mercroft Academy.
The Academy teaches more than just the typical subjects like math and science. New student Harlen quickly finds this out in the new-to-him, but seemingly old castle, which houses the Academy. As part of his education, Harlen is introduced to the art of using a Verum, a powerful technological device that can manipulate reality.
At the same time, FBI agents are scrambling to solve what proves to be more than what they initially thought they were looking for.
Words, while powerful, can be dangerous. The old saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me" proves to be far from the truth.
Will Harlen learn to use words and the Verum to stand up to his classmate and bully, Jason? Will he help solve the Mercroft mystery in time to save himself as well as others?
The book, parts fantasy, mystery, and thriller, is very creative! I'll look forward to reading the next book in what the author told me is a series.
This was a wild ride into a world of magic and intrigue set against the backdrop of a murder mystery.
One of the standout features of the book is its use of dual POVs, which alternate seamlessly with each chapter. The cliffhangers at the end of each POV had me flying through the chapters to pick back up with that character.
The murder mystery at the heart of the novel adds an extra layer of suspense and excitement, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they try to unravel the secrets of the academy and the murder of a prominent syndicate member.
However, while the book's length may seem daunting at first, the pacing picks up significantly in the last half, making it difficult to put down.
One minor critique is the frequent use of names in paragraphs, which can sometimes disrupt the flow of the narrative. However, this is a small flaw in an otherwise engaging and well-crafted story.
Overall, I did really enjoy this nice blend of fantasy and thriller and I’m seriously hoping there’s a sequel because I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.
This is an intriguing take on a coming of age story with fantasy elements. It’s got a bit of a Harry Potter meets X-Men meets Sherlock Holmes sort of feel. The protagonist faces the challenges of making friends, competing successfully, and simply surviving in an academic environment.
There are a few twists and turns with emphasis on political motives. I read a review copy but my thoughts and opinions are my own. I was genuinely impressed with the world building and the ability of the author to draw you into this one in a manner that seems effortless.
I’m gonna say that if you really liked Harry Potter but wished it was a little beefier, this will be great for you! I really loved the whole concept of the Verum and learning about Wordsmithing. Got really got about halfway through but overall was pleasantly surprising! I also feel that fans of Skyward would love this. Not sure why though 😂
A thrilling murder mystery, with unique advanced tech and dark academia this young adult novel centered on Mercroft Academy follows FBI agent Ryan DuPont who is on the hunt for a murderer and student Harlan Rhodes whose lives intersect over a device known as a verum. A complex plot with many twists and turns and fun characters, this novel will keep you on your toes.
Academy of Breath and Fire ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5 Stars) By Kristofor Hellmeister
There’s a lot going on and is definitely not a story that can be read while doing other things. It centers around a device called a Verum. Harlen is once again sent to another school (Mercroft Academy) and is taught from the beginning how important his words can be, that his words can manipulate reality with this device. The book immediately captured my attention. The fact that this device allows the user to manipulate based solely on the words that they use is so intriguing. I went back and forth on if I should give this four or five stars, it’s kind of in between. I wish I could rate it at 4.5 stars! Note: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my second book by this author, and I have to say I like what he writes, and I like how he writes it.
His books are exciting and suspenseful and are full of mystery, dabbed with thriller.
A mix between sci-fi-Harry Potter and Murder Mystery or modern Sherlock Holmes? There are definitely a lot of twists and turns throughout the whole story. The story has a unique plot and creepy-crawly feelings to it, too.
An old school/academy for special talented kids full of shadows and ghost from the past, but are they just shadows, and are they just ghosts?
We've two main characters in this story. One is the current student of this mysterious school and the second it a student from the past. I love both of them.
I recommend this book to all murder mystery, thriller, and paranormal crime fans. Yes, I know I can never make a general statement, which genre I've just read 🤣 I find it difficult to say just one. I always write what I think was in the book 🙃
Academy of Breath and Fire Author: Kristofor Hellmeister
"The easiest way to conceal a lie is to make people believe they already know the truth."
We travel to the exclusive Mercroft University, where students learn to manipulate reality with technology through the use of a Verum.
A Verum appears to the outside world as a kind of mask, but when the wearer of a Verum manages to fully control its powers, it can become a deadly murder weapon.
Harlen Rodes has been kicked out of many schools. His father decides to send him to his own former school Mercroft.
Mercroft University looks like an old castle from the outside. Harlen is overwhelmed by the new world he suddenly finds himself in. He quickly decides to investigate to find out what the mysterious side of the university is...
The book alternates between two characters: Harlen and Agent Dupont.
Agent Dupont is a former student of Mercroft who, after many years, is confronted with the university again when he and his colleague have to solve a murder case...
Harlen and Agent Dupont must work together to save the future of the school and everyone involved.
Will they manage to intervene in time and overpower the perpetrator?
I really enjoyed reading this book. What really caught my attention was the original storyline. I have never read a book before, where technology plays the leading role in solving a murder mystery.
The atmosphere and story setting are vividly described by the author, allowing the reader to really imagine the castle and its secrets.
I found the characters well developed, their mutual ties quickly became clear to me. Because their personalities differ greatly from each other, a lot of dynamics arise in the storyline.
The plot was nerve-wracking, a number of things happened that I did not see coming, which made me incredibly curious about the outcome.
I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!
I was asked by the author himself to review his book in exchange for a ARC copy.
Trigger warnings: Death of a parent, grief, murder, violence

This book is the perfect mix of fantasy, sci-fi, mystery and a touch of dark academia! I really liked that the magic/technology was founded on the power that words hold, which isn't really far from reality. Words can be used as weapons. We just don't realize our words' impact on others, because in real life there isn't any fancy devices that helps us manipulate others or our surroundings.
I really enjoyed the dark academia setting and even thought I don't read books of this genre often, I liked the sci-fi touch. Both the plot and the characters are well developed, deep and multilayered, which I always love in a book. Moreover, the book's introduction was one of the strongest I have read in a while. It really grabbed my attention and put me on edge! I, also, liked the different POVs, as I think they really intensified the suspense and mystery in the storyline.
If I had to describe this book in three words these would be them: gripping, innovative, mindblowing
As someone who loves supporting new and upcoming authors, I appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into creating a novel.
This book captivated me from the start with its rich world-building and engaging storyline. The protagonist, Harlen, is a well-developed character whose journey kept me hooked. His growth throughout the story, both personally and in his magical abilities, was compelling and relatable. The unique concept of Wordsmithing and the mysterious Mercroft Academy were particularly fascinating, offering a fresh take on the fantasy genre.
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its immersive setting. The author does a fantastic job of creating a vivid and magical world that feels both expansive and detailed. The descriptions of the Academy, its architecture, and the magical elements within it are truly enchanting. The supporting characters are equally well-crafted, each bringing something unique to the story. Characters like Liora and Balin add depth and variety, making the narrative even more engaging.
The plot is filled with twists and turns that keep the reader on their toes. From the initial introduction to Harlen's humble beginnings to the complex dynamics at the Academy, the story weaves a tapestry of intrigue and adventure. The author skillfully balances action scenes with moments of introspection, allowing readers to connect deeply with the characters and their struggles.
However, there are a few areas that could be improved. At times, the pacing felt a bit uneven, particularly in the middle sections where the plot seemed to slow down before picking up again. Additionally, some of the secondary characters could have been given more depth to enhance their roles in the story. For instance, while Liora's background is touched upon, a deeper exploration of her past could have enriched the narrative further.
Despite these minor issues, "Academy of Breath and Fire" is a commendable debut that shows great promise. The themes of friendship, perseverance, and the quest for self-discovery are well-executed and resonate throughout the story. The dialogue is natural and contributes significantly to character development, making interactions believable and heartfelt.
I highly recommend reading it with an open mind and no expectations—you might find yourself enjoying it even more than I did. This book is a testament to the creativity and effort that new authors bring to the table, and I am excited to see how the author will continue to evolve in their future works.

Academy of Breath and Fire is an exhilarating mix of thriller, murder mystery, sci-fi and fantastical elements.
The book opens up with a gruesome murder making you fully engrossed in the book and absolutely horrified of what is to come.
I took my time reading this one because I wanted to completely engross myself in the story. So I also want to thank the author for being so patient with me!
the world building in here is so detailed and nuanced it felt like I was watching a movie play in my head— and that’s the great thing about books, they can transport you to different worlds.
The vibes of Mercroft academy was very Xmen meets Sherlock Holmes, with a dash of dark academia mixed in— all things I absolutely LOVE.
I love the concept of words changing the fabric of reality— what an absolutely horrifying thing to be able to do. There was a machine discussed in the book which made this possible and I wish we had a whole other book about this machine, it’s such a cool device! I also think if you are a paranormal fan, that this concept will capture your attention, especially the device used to manipulate reality.
I adored Ryan, what a fantastic character full of all the charm of a noir detective. Harlen was self deprecating but also super relatable, I enjoyed the two point of views and how they intersected
The ending was a nice set up for a possible next edition. The book is currently available in paperback format and Kindle on Amazon! Pick yourself up a copy and give it at try ❤️
If you loved Harry Potter, then you're sure to be captivated by Kristofor Hellmeister's YA dark academia, sci-fi adventure that revolves around a gripping murder mystery. This story promises to pull you into a universe you won't want to leave.
"Academy of Breath and Fire" presents a compelling blend of action, mystery, and dark intrigue, with Harlen Rhodes as the focal point of the story, who is thrust into the world of Mercroft Academy, an institution dedicated to the mastery of the Verum. This device, central to the academy's teachings, allows its wielder to manipulate reality through words. The story also alternates with the perspective of FBI Agent Dupont, who is investigating a mysterious murder connected to this Academy. This book weaves together a narrative that explores themes of power, manipulation, and identity against the backdrop of the sinister Mercroft Academy with secrets buried beneath its surface.
The story begins with an ominous scene involving powerful crime figures, setting the tone for the novel's exploration of power dynamics and control. The introduction of Harlen Rhodes, the main character, marks a significant shift in the narrative, transitioning from grim underworld to the seemingly prestigious but equally dangerous academy. Harlen's journey is marked by his struggle with belonging and identity, as he is repeatedly transferred from school to school. Harlen's experiences at the Mercroft Academy expose him to a world where alliances are fragile.
📘MY OPINION:
One of the novel's strengths is its ability to build tension and suspense. The author deftly kept me on edge, never quite sure what will happen next, which makes for a page-turning experience. Kristofor Hellmeister crafts a rich tapestry of characters, each with their own motivations and struggles. He ensures that the story remains engaging without becoming bogged down in unnecessary exposition. Each revelation pushes the story forward.
This was my first read of the year and I couldn’t ask for a better book (well I could but it was also great). This book is a sci-fi with a mystery and has a school setting.
This book has mainly two POVs Harlen Rhodes and Agent Ryan Dupont. The chapters themselves alternate between the two POVs so we get a full picture of what is happening all the time. This book is divided into two parts. By only looking at its content you may see 90+ chapters but it isn’t that long, the chapters are smaller
It is fast-paced without being cumbersome. The plot was nicely developed, especially the Mystery which I predicted after the first half of the book and I was mostly right with just one mistake and that was a good twist. I did loved the police work and mystery where they have to catch the culprit by investigating and collecting clues.
The magic or science that is applied sometimes seems complicated but is otherwise easy enough to understand. And it was a unique scientific system for me so I liked it very much. It is wordsmithing, looking at the name of the system it could have been a lot more complicated but the author handled it well.
The one thing I didn’t like was the behavior of Harlen our MC, especially his deprecating thoughts toward himself, it looked like he didn’t get much growth in the book which I would have loved to see.
And the title of the book was only mentioned once in the whole book I think somebody said that words are like breath and fire. Other than that it doesn’t get mentioned much. I get the title’s meaning but it is clear by reading the book.
The book ends at such a place that there is more to the story and I would love to read the next book.
Storytelling is never ending, always at our reach when we need an escape. That’s why I love bookstagram because it allows us to not only connect with our favorite authors, but also discover new ones.
I was grateful when the author Kistofor asked me to review their book. So I downloaded it on my kindle and started reading.
Academy of Breath and Fire is a thriller/sci-fi, filled with mysteries. It leaves you questioning a lot of things throughout the book. It has that dark academia vibe, which I really enjoyed.
This YA novel starts off with the mysterious murder of Aleks Gregorovich, a powerful leader of Syndicate. We are then introduced to our first MC, FBI agent Ryan Dupont who is assigned for the investigation. It eventually leads him to the Mercroft Academy, a technologically well developed academy, where we meet our second MC, Harlan Rhodes, son of a presidential candidate. Harlen is an outcast, a misfit, who’s an expert with computer technology but not with the Academy’s tech: the Verum, a highly advanced device that plays a major part in FBI Duponts investigation.
You see, the verum, gives words power. What I mean is, it allows words to literally change perceptions, alter reality.
In the book, you will get to see both of their journeys moving in the same direction, yet apart. They deal with their own setbacks and drama, but the moment their journeys intersect, mystery and dark events start to unfold.
I will say, it was a bit confusing at first and I wished the author touched more on the Verum. Either way, it was an interesting and fun read. Give this book a try.
This book offers a refreshing take on the oft-repeated adage that “words have power,” turning it into a literal and thrilling concept. The idea of words being physically powerful adds a unique layer to the story, making it stand out among contemporary sci-fi and mystery novels.
The writing style, while straightforward and easy to follow, doesn’t quite rise to a level of literary finesse that keeps readers utterly hooked. It does the job well enough to propel the plot forward, but it occasionally feels a bit basic, lacking a compelling spark that might elevate the story.
One of the strengths of the book is its dual points of view. The simultaneous, interconnected storylines create a sense of urgency and complexity, keeping the narrative engaging. The main characters are relatable and likeable, though not without their flaws. Harlen’s occasional “pick me” energy can be a bit grating, and Agent Dupont’s tendency to let personal biases cloud his professional judgment weakens his credibility at times. Still, these imperfections make them human and add depth to their arcs.
The plot twist is a standout element. While I initially felt confident about who the murderer was, the twist introduced an unexpected layer to the mystery, offering a satisfying surprise.
Overall, Academy of Breath and Fire is a captivating read with an inventive premise and intriguing characters. While it may not be flawless, it’s certainly worth the journey for fans of sci-fi and suspense.
"Your mistrust of the past makes it difficult to claim the future"
This book is a real heartpounding and nailbiting Young Adult Sci-fi Murder mystery. Spanning over 450+ pages, This is a Harrypotter meets DC Max wolfe kinda psychological thriller.
The book begins with the mysterious murder of Aleks Gregorovich, one of the powerful leader of Syndicate. FBI agents Ryan Dupont and Frank Smith are assigned for the investigation. Ryan's suspicions leads them to the Mercroft Academy, a technologically well developed academy, where Ryan had a bitter past. At the Same time, the story also follows Harlen Rhodes, the son of presidential candidate Garry Rhodes, as he gets enrolled in the Mercroft academy and faces the challanges lying there.
I felt the first half a bit slow paced and had me confused, but as it moved to the second half, I wasn't able to stop reading that I completed it in one go. The plotline is interesting as it seamlessly entwines murder mystery and sci-fi elements. Characters are well written and developed, each with their own backstory, ambitions and secrets.
The story ends with a lot of questions, that'll keep you guessing for long after you finish the last page, leaving hints of a sequel. The book definitely got me hooked in the second half, as the missing pieces falls into place and the characters races against time. This was an incredible read I had.
