Best read after The Golden Alpha, The Alpha King is a soft and steamy omegaverse with a powerful alpha and a perfectly imperfect omega, set in a suspiciously serene dystopia on the verge of unraveling.
The Alpha King is book two in a series of interconnected stand-alones, which means each book focuses on a new couple and their relationship arc wraps up within the book. Rill and Liz were SO fun and I loveddd their banter. I think I even like this couple better than the couple from book one 👀 I loved how Rill and Liz both brought different types of strength to their relationship, which really resulted in them balancing each other so well. I loved the storylines that continued over from book one and cannot wait to see where things go in book three…it’s def setting itself up to be full of drama! 👀
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Alpha King is the second book in the Goldenrod series and also my current read that I had to physically peal myself away from my kindle to stop reading. It’s THAT good. I remember I enjoyed book 1 a lot, but damn there is just something about the gruff, passionate and possessive Alpha King Rill that does wicked things to my poor ovaries.
This is a second book in a series and it’s advisable to read it after book 1 for world building reasons, though will say that the author does an excellent job at immersing the reader into the world by some well placed paragraphs and dialogues that link back to events and things covered in book 1. But still read book 1 first and meet Wyatt Sage. You’ll thank me letter.
The main characters of The Alpha King are Rill and Elizabeth, the alpha and his omega who couldn’t be more different and yet they make sense. Rill comes from a harsh reality that had forced him to grow thick skin and not the kindest of attitudes, while Liz has grown up sheltered and pampered in Goldenrod. This contrast between them is what makes them so addicting and so fun to read. And their spicy scenes are explosive and very well done.
I enjoyed how the characters from the first book tied with the plot of this book and I’m very excited for the next books in the series. The next one promises to be full of drama, and the one after that…I need it because reasons!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
ate. i am a little confused about some plot points. like won’t the “pigeons” just come and absolutely annihilate goldenrod now that the truth is out? they have guns + tech… the people of goldenrod literally would be wiped out instantly and i have no idea why the “pigeons” wouldn’t do that. also i want orions book next, i’m bummed it’s nate’s.
Lots more suspense and world understanding in this second in the Goldenrod series! I’ll readily admit I didn’t like Elizabeth at ALL going into this book. She was such a nasty little piece of work in the previous story. And, she started out much the same in this one. We did get to see her (slowly) evolve, grow and become a more likeable character as things progressed, however. And, I’ll also admit, pitting a spoiled, entitled, cosseted woman against a world-weary, harsh, scrabble to live and survive man was a recipe for all kinds of fireworks! Not comfortable at all, but compelling nonetheless.
I’m impressed at how true to their nature Ms. North kept the characters while still subtlety pushing them through growth. It was expertly done and incredibly interesting to read. So many things about their society is also brought to light in this story, which opens the doors to all kinds of suspense to come in future books! So, I think I’m in this one for the long run!
I had a hard time putting this book down! I loved the characters, the dual POV and the writing was so gripping! After reading the first book I had an idea of what I thought would happen in the second book but a lot of it was surprising to me and a couple twists left my mouth just hanging open. Now I need to wait not so patiently for the next one.
Quote:📖 I could hear the screams, though, and feel the pain. So much pain. It was the pain that made me the monster I am today. I don’t think a single day has passed that I haven’t wished it away. But now … I swear I’d do it all again for her.
Thoughts: 💡 This book is just as angsty and hot as the first one and pulls off interesting plot twists of its own. I loved the deeper look at the world the story was set in and the alternate perspectives. The MCs had an explosive chemistry and their smut scenes were fire. 🔥 They had this super angsty push and pull relationship that made their enemies to lovers storyline believable and engaging. There were choices that the characters made that were super frustrating and made me wonder “Why!?!” But stepping back, I could see how it was the right choice for the characters. They had opposing beliefs and came from very different worlds, plus they had strong fiery personalities, they needed to work through that, because even fated mates aren’t immediately symptomatico. It wouldn’t have been such an interesting story if they were.
Writing Mechanics: ✍️ I think North does a great job with world building, it happens seamlessly and usually doesn’t feel like it’s happening because of the way she relays the information. She set up some stellar plot twists that weren’t obvious. She gave the characters a lot of depth with great backstories. I really appreciated that every character had a purpose and a story, it made it all feel like an intricate puzzle that I was piecing together.
Fun Bits: ⚜️ Snobbish Princess Develops Character ⚜️ Tyrannical Alpha Learning To Bend ⚜️ Super Hot Smut ⚜️ Interesting Story World ⚜️ Plot Twists ⚜️ Enemies w/ Opposite Personalities & Beliefs ⚜️ Tragic Backstories ⚜️ Angsty ⚜️ Interesting Side Characters and Plotlines ⚜️ Development & Continuation of Plot from Book 1, even though it can be read independently
Important Note:✨ This is NOT a shifter romance, but it is a super hot smutty omegaverse story.
Elizabeth has lived a sheltered and prestigious life, training to be the perfect omega in hopes of calling to the perfect alpha. However, Elizabeth's life is completely flipped upside down when she not only finds herself outside the safety the walls of Goldenrod but that her fated mate is the none other than the brutal, rugged, alpha king, Rill. Life outside the wall is dangerous enough for an omega of such status, but now Elizabeth is forced to assimilate into a lifestyle she was completely unprepared for and knows nothing about. With their bond already in such a fragile state and threats lingering around every corner, will their bond survive the challenges they face and at what cost?
I loved the relationship and the character dynamic Elizabeth and Rill had together, pampered meets rugged, yum! I also really enjoyed the character development the both experienced throughout the story. The plot was solid, not something I've personally read before. There were a couple of plot twists that had me screaming, "WTF?!" & let's not forget about the spice, there was a little sprinkled in that enhanced the plot as opposed to just randomly appearing out of nowhere for no reason. Overall, it was a really good book that I couldn't put down and binge-read in just two days.
Full transparency, I gave it 4 stars because a couple times in the beginning I found myself flipping back to previous pages because the information presented felt like it came out of nowhere. After finishing the book I can see what the author was trying to do, but it just slightly missed the mark, causing a little bit of confusion as disruption in my reading. I say this because as you're reading this book, if you start to feel the same I just encourage you to hold out and keep going. It does even out and really sucks you in. One other minor detail, and this is just a me thing, but some of the terms used to describe certain behaviors or acts made me cringe. Again, it's a me thing, certain words just give me the heebie jebbies, haha.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an omegaverse with fated mates, dystopian vibes, cultish communities, and a little spice.
*I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Spice rating: 3
Returning to the world of the Goldenrod series was somehow better than I could have ever anticipated. While I enjoyed The Golden Alpha for the characters and the introduction to the lore and the society of Goldenrod, it was exciting to step away from it in The Alpha King and have an outside perspective through Rill, who sees Goldenrod for the gilded cage it is.
Things in Crescent Rock are vastly different from the sheltered life of Goldenrod, and seeing a character like Elizabeth, who was raised to be the perfect omega, thrust into this new reality was interesting to see. Her character develops beautifully in this book. She learns to work hard, to be stronger and doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind. Despite her softness and demure nature, she is the perfect match for Rill.
Rill was definitely a big reason why I enjoyed this book more than its predecessor. He’s a true alpha in many ways—possessive, authoritative, passionate, violent—and where he toughens up Liz, she smoothens out his rough edges. The way he speaks his mind, his strong language, and the way he carries himself made him such a compelling character. There were moments he made me laugh, and others where I have been made a puddle. Together, he and Liz have an incredible banter and chemistry that peaks in their intimate moments. The impression I had was that this book was also steamier than its predecessor.
These stories seem to focus on the couple and don't do as much world building as I'd like to see. This was an enemies to lovers type story. She's prim and proper and he's dirty and scarred. They should not go together but they do. I loved seeing Elizabeth come into her own. Her character went through the most change out of any other character. She was so annoying in the first book. J couldn't tell if she really did cry all the time or if she was hiding something. Turns out, she really does cry all the time.
This was a great book! I found it easy to read, well written, great characters, and descriptive! This was my first read from this author, and I am hooked! If you like little spice, powers, conflict, mates, turmoil, a manipulative a$$hole, and more... this is for you! I think this would also be a great entry into fantasy books. No filler, or added words! Straight forward book, which I highly admire!! I ate this book up!!
Wow she has done it again. I loved this book! I feel like it is really easy to make an omegaverse book bad but I haven't read a bad one from Emily yet. I loved the dynamic between the main characters as it is an opposites attract situation. I highly recommend her books, I loved this one so much that I ended up finding the next novella book because I wasn't finished with the world and it was just as good. I am really looking forward to reading her next books in this series!
*Disclaimer I did receive an ARC to give my full and honest review. My thoughts are my own.*
I think I enjoyed this one more than the first and I loved the first book! Here I go adding another book boyfriend to my list.
Perfect for fans of dystopian, fated mates, omegaverse, and enemies to lovers. This story will have you drooling for the main characters. Liz and Rill are everything. I absolutely loved their dynamic, their banter, their hate, the way Rill wants to protect her from absolutely everything. It’s the type of romance that the MMC burns anything and everything for his love!
This world is filled with betas, alphas, and omegas, I loved the dystopian world and its world building, The plot was well paced, especially with the two MCs in the front lines. I am obsessed! Can’t wait for the next!
Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.
Rill, the male alpha lead, has been the leader/king of a small group of primarily alphas since he escaped from the human city where he was tortured for a long time. With facial and other scars, he knows his appearance is fearsome and he never expected an omega to choose him for her mate. When Elizabeth, the female omega lead, called him (in the previous story in the series) after he acted to save their group, he was determined to take the chance that had been presented to him.
Elizabeth was at the top of the social structural in her enclave but she still found herself “released” (tossed out) for no reason that she can discern and then humiliated by her instinctive choice of Rill when her logical assessment was that he was an uncivilised ragamuffin. Yet she remains stuck with him.
Now they need to negotiate a relationship in a dirty rundown town the likes of which Elizabeth has never been exposed to and with the threat of humans and other alphas. Plus there’s the issue of what’s happening back in Elizabeth’s enclave…
This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and an engaging dystopian omegaverse romance that continues the overarching plot whilst presenting a new lead romance. I enjoyed the lead character development, with both lead characters mellowing so that they could form a relationship. I enjoyed Rill’s strength and care for those he deemed under his protection. I enjoyed Elizabeth’s resilience and her perseverance in trying circumstances. I enjoyed the pacing of this story much more than the first and found the author’s craft skills much improved. I enjoyed the extension of the overarching plot and am waiting for the next story with interest. I also appreciate that the author has made a short story available with newsletter sign up for a couple of side characters which looks like it will be fun!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I was so very fortunate to receive an ARC of The Alpha King. Emily North was a new to me author before reading the Golden Alpha. I am going to be completely honest, I was an avid omegaverse avoider. I always felt disconnected from the stories that wrote within that world and felt they were always so over the top (absolutely no hate to the lovers of the genre). After reading Emily North's The Golden Alpha, I fell in love with her style of writing within the omegaverse. I was so eager to get my hands on Rill and Elizabeth's story after the ending of the first book. This book was phenomenal. I was not an Elizabeth stan after the first book, honestly I was a bit hesitant to even like her but this story redeemed her so much for me. We got to see Elizabeth grow from this sheltered "perfect" omega and blossom into this woman who became strong, kinder, and a lot less "posh." Rill was a phenomenal hero in this book. He was a hero of dreams, being rugged, strong, and a protector (and of course an ego that we all say we kind of hate but actually kind of love). We got to see Rill individually grow into a much stronger and capable leader and a much more understanding partner throughout this book. To see the relationship build between Rill and Elizabeth was wonderful. The "enemies to lovers" trope really worked here and boy did the lovers really work. The world building that built up within this series has been wonderful. This book really gave more back story on the "outside" world that was only touched up on in the first book. Between the world building, character development and epic love story that made The Alpha King, I absolutely recommend this book to everyone. If you were ever hesitant to get into the world of omegaverse, I cannot recommend Emily North more because she truly makes a beautiful story that will stick with you.
I was honored to receive an ARC ebook of The Alpha King, and after reading The Golden Alpha this was a great second book in the Goldnrod series, that carried on immediately after the first book ends.
I was eager to read the continuation of Rill and Elizabeth's story after the ending of the first book and continue to immerse myself in the omegaverse again. This book was wonderful, Elizabeth is mated to Rill and has to follow him to his home where no Betas exist and Alphas and Omegas have to do all the daily hard work, so she has to become a strong, kinder, and less refined woman. Rill is handsome, rugged, strong and protective of Elizabeth (if a bit overbearing at times!!)and we see him grow to become a very capable leader and an amazing partner for her.
This is an "enemies to lovers" trope and boy do they fight, but then boy do they LOVE
The world building is amazing. The character development was great and it was nice to see characters from the first book reintroduced and the love story was fun to watch unfold. The book has plot twists and turns that just keep you guessing until the very end and of course leaves you wanting more.
Emily North’s omegaverse is a truly beautiful world and I highly recommend these books to everyone. I am really looking forward to reading her next books in this series!
What a roller coaster of a story! The Alpha King picks up right where The Golden Alphas ends. The story revolves around Elizabeth, Goldenrod’s Perfect Omega and Rill, King of the Alphas of Cresent Rock. Elizabeth finds herself mated to Rill and forced to following him back to his home of Cresent Rock, an old mining town in the Appalachian Mountains. Elizabeth is in for a rude awakening when she realizes there are no betas in the outside world and the Alphas and Omegas do all the manual labor. As Elizabeth fights to maintain traditions from Goldenrod, Rill fights like hell to pull her out of her make believe “perfect life” As the two continue to fight, they soon realize that fighting is their love language and once they realize this, the gloves, or clothes come off. This book was just as amazing as the first book in this series. You are surprised with plot twist after plot twist. This is an amazing twist of the omegaverse and I can’t wait to see how the series continues to play out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Rill is EVERYTHING I love to see in an MMC—he’s rugged, rough around the edges, dominating but endearing, and would burn the world down for his Liz. I freaking LOVED this installment in the Goldenrod series and I NEED y’all to get on these books. The Golden Alpha, was absolutely amazing, but book 2 totally blew me away!
The Alpha King by Emily North is book 2 in a series of standalones set in a suspiciously serene dystopia on the verge of unraveling. This world features alphas, betas, and omegas, but they are NOT shifters—rather, they respond to the call, and even communicate through thoughts with their mates—one of my FAVE microtropes in romance books!
What to Expect: —Dual POV Chapters —Naive Princess FMC —Scarred Alpha MMC —Dystopian Omegaverse —Enemies-to-Lovers —Opposites Attract —Fated Mates
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
I loved the very raw, base, primal nature of Alpha and Omega in The Alpha King.
Elizabeth has had a refined, luxurious upbringing, as an Omega, her path was set out for her. Until it wasn't.
Cast out of her town, she is thrown into an ugly world that she doesn't understand, particularly when her Omega 'calls' to the scarred rough and ready Alpha, Rill.
Rill rescued Liz (as he likes to call her to rile her up!) and he knows that she is his.
Rill is the king of Crescent Rock, an abandoned mining village where he can't afford distraction, yet he is not letting his Omega go.
I enjoyed seeing Rill show his vulnerability to Elizabeth and how she, in return, softened her edges and although Rill was not the type of Alpha she thought she wanted, he was definitely, sexily, gorgeously, the Alpha she needed.
I received an ARC copy of this book in return for my honest review.
The Alpha King is a fast paced, enemies to lovers, fated-mates omegaverse with a grumpy main male character and a twist that makes the story so much better.
I devoured this book, being drawn in again and again by the storyline. It is action packed with very few quite moments before the action picks right back up. The twists and reveals make everything click so well into place that I want to reread both books again after having the knowledge.
Though this is fated mates and omegaverse there is no shifting of any kind by any characters.
That being said I give this book four stars. A very good read all and all though I wish there had been a little more information given so I wasn't quite so confused until the reveal.
This was my frist step into the "Omegaverse" and what an introduction The Alpha King and The Golden Alpha were.
At first I had my doubts about liking the story of Rill and Elizabeth, but as the story unfolded I got more and more attached to them and it got harder to put the book away.
So I just finished it in one day.
I also really liked the recurring characters from the first book. I always wonder about what happens to them when you don't see them in sequels.
There were some twists and turns that I didn't expected and that should keep the story from becoming too much like other Omegaverse stories.
I first heard about these books in another author’s group chat, and I am so thankful that I did! I binge read the first book within a day, and I was absolutely feral for this book. The wait was worth it because it delivered in so many ways.
I’m not normally interested in dystopian omegaverse books because most have the tendency to make the omegas seem weak and unable to handle any type of challenges. Emily has taken this genre though and given it a new twist that feels very M Night Shyamalanian. Goldenrod is a place where the secrets have secrets, and nothing is ever as it seems, including our FMC Elizabeth.
When we left her in the previous book, her world had fallen apart in many ways, and she was questioning every person and their motives. She was also intrigued and disgusted by the new stranger that her call had started for. Most fmcs would have laid down and called it quits, but Elizabeth’s growth and fortitude is what made me love her story. Also, the chemistry between her and Rill is off the charts hottttt.
The end of this book left my mouth hanging open. I’m not sure I’ll ever get enough of these alphas and omegas. I hope Emily keeps giving us stories because I know there’s plenty we still have to learn about this wild mysterious place.
I was so excited to read the next book after I read The Golden Alpha. The series is an omegaverse, but with no shifters. Just Alphas, omegas, and betas. There are magical elements. I didn't expect to like Elizabeth as much as I did in this story. In the first book she wasn't my favorite, but I came to like her and I loved when her and Rill came together. There is spice and its comes in quicker than the first book. And the tension is there throughout. An omega can't fight the feeling for her Alpha right?
I liked the Golden Alpha but I loved The Alpha King! This book is much faster paced and just keeps moving. Elizabeth was a great character in this book. I found her annoying in the first book but in this one I was rooting for her the whole way through watching her journey both independently and with Rill, who was her perfect opposite and mate. It left off in a great place and I can't wait to read the next story.
This book was even better than the first! I loved the stark differences in the FMC and the MMC and their journey trying to navigate their attraction vs their lifestyles. I really enjoyed how much more plot line we got in this book too. And even though I love a good MMC I think Liz really stood out here. I love her journey of self discovery and I can't wait to see her blossom with the rest of the story.
Again, full disclosure, I don't have a frame of reference for Omegaverse stories. But what Emily does is bring her characters to life in such a way that make you feel connected and invested.
Orion. I cannot. No spoilers but OMG I need this story. Anxiously awaiting new installments.
Emily did not disappoint with Elizabeth and Rill’s story. From the very beginning it was wild and kept you on your toes and the more you read the crazier it got. Elizabeth and Rill couldn’t have been more different, even their worlds were two completely different worlds, but as their love grew stronger and the compromised for each other more, the more their worlds became one. I loved everything about this book and I cannot wait for the next one!
First you want to read The Golden Alpha to help with some of the back story. It’s a great start to the series.
Now, when I say this book has it all! Enemies to lovers, fated mates, strong MFC and more!
I loved Liz and Rill’s story. I was pretty excited to read this one. The way the story played out was simply amazing and kept me wanting more. I was happy to see the return of Wyatt and Camilla and totally shocked by how things went down.
Rill and Elizabeth have a wild ride of a story filled with unexpected twists. These two were opposites one rugged another was pampered. For me it was very easy to become engrossed in their story. It has some amazing developments in plot and character. It was interesting to see how Riff and Elizabeth were around eachother and interacted. I enjoyed the tension and spice between them. This was a strong addition to the Goldenrod series and had made me excited for future books.
I loved this book, it is one of my favorite reads this year. I loved Elizabeth’s and Rills love story , I was rooting for them from the beginning! I loved the tension and the love story. Definitely opposites attract giving it beauty and the beast vibes. Fated mates and enemies to lovers are my top favorite tropes so it was no surprise that this book had me wrapped around its finger! This book is beautifully written I couldn’t place this book down.
Emily North's "The Alpha King" steals the supernatural romance spotlight! After savoring "The Golden Alpha," Liz and Rill's story is a literary feast—enemies turned lovers, fated mates, and a fierce main character. The plot twists are like rollercoaster loops, and I loved to see Wyatt and Camilla appearance. The world-building was amazing and captivated me, leaving me thirsty for more. This series is a must-read gem for fantasy enthusiasts—a gripping and enchanting adventure!
I absolutely loved this book and finished it so quickly. To start Rill had me in love with him since book one when he was introduced. So reading his and Elizabeth's story was just amazing. I just ate every single part of this book up, even the parts where It was upsetting or heartbreaking. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat!
