Fantastic book detailing literally every concert the Beach Boys did; while that may not sound too interesting the wealth of details, anecdotes reviews and other make this vital reading for any fan -- seriouly the best Beach Boys book I have ever read and matched only by such works as Mark Lewisohn's Abbey Road sessions book and so on. It's that great.
Now, if only Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbens could write another book on the Beach Boys' sessions, I would be in heaven.
The Beach Boys In Concert: The Ultimate History of America's Band On Tour and Onstage by Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins (Backbeat Books 2013) (780.92). The Beach Boys burst onto the musical scene in California in 1961; they soon perfected the “California Sound” of surf music and the burgeoning car culture. Led by the genius composer Brian Wilson and his brothers Dennis and Carl, they were soon one of America's top pop acts. This volume lists in chronological order all of the Beach Boys concerts between 1961 and 2012. I saw the new Brian Wilson biopic in the theaters last week; he was a mentally ill mess for much of his time in the spotlight apparently arising from mental, emotional, and physical abuse at the hands of his father Murray. My rating: 7/10, finished 6/16/15.
This book is both fascinating and maddeningly incomplete and confusing. It needed much more editing and more detail (including more setlists). The new, previously unpublished information (including confirmation of the date of a New Jersey concert my mother and uncle attended in 1972 absent from Keith Badman's day-by-day diary of the group) just about makes up for the glaring, repeated inconsistencies, typographical errors, amphiboles, etc.
