1. Awards: None 2. Grade level(s): Pre-K – 3rd 3. Original summary: You are invited by the narrator to join in as a beloved nursery rhyme is expanded and turned into an elongated tale of very strange and random images. The original story of “Hey Diddle Diddle,” is told and then the narrator presents refrigerators flying kites, cheetahs teaching zebras math, and a tiny giraffe who is painted blue. The conclusion of the book invites readers to create their own stories. 4. Original review: This book is sure to puzzle adults and please children who find its nonsensical phrases striking and hilarious. Although the animals and objects depicted are drawn realistically, the colors are an incongruous eyesore. The story is bizarre and silly, but maintains constant rhyme and rhythm, making this book a smooth and enjoyable read. 5. In-class uses: • Higher grade levels can create their own books with original story and rhymes (loosely following ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’s’ rhythm). • Give each student a sheet with one stanza from the book (vary the distribution so each student gets a different one). Have them read the stanza and draw a corresponding picture to go with it.
This is a very cute little book that would be a great read for children of all ages. This book really encourages students and shows them how reading and writing can be so much fun! This book is a beloved classic written in a different way then what I have heard. This book is an excellent way to teach students the art of writing poems that rhyme and having a staple line that is repeated throughout a writer's writing. This is also a good book for teaching rhyming words and nonsense words. This book is very funny and engaging and I am sure all children would love it. " Hey diddle, sunny, did you find it funny, this nonsensical book of rhyme? I hope when you're done you ask for more, I will read it to you anytime."-Melissa Everett
