I first read this book in second grade as my first "real book." For that reason, it holds a lot of nostalgia for me, which I'm sure makes my reading biased. Regardless, I absolutely loved the book when I read it. Having such a positive experience with my first attempt at real reading took me from someone not at all interested to reading the Prydain Chronicles by the end of the next year and Robert Louis Stevenson the year after that. This book showed me the potential for suspense, excitement, mystery, and magic in reading. The supernatural focus of the book also left an impression that has followed me for the rest of my reading. Going back and reading it again as an adult has shown me that it really is just a mediocre YA novel with predictable plot and simplistic writing. But for a second grader? Perfect!
This was the first “real book” I read as my own decision in grade school and it remains my gateway into the world of horror. I haven’t read it since then but it gets a solid 5 stars for the seed it planted.
