Livia has never felt like she fits in. As normal as it sounds, Livia is anything but ordinary. She can feel every emotion of every single person around her, and it’s maddening. In pursuit of some psychic quiet, she moves with her family from New York City to Whidbey Island in the lush and sleepy Pacific Northwest. But when a horseback riding accident in her new home gives her a broken leg that heals in a day, she finds that another unexplainable ability has manifested, and her life isn’t about to get any easier.
Adam has no problem fitting in and making friends. In fact, he’s the top of the school, the boy everyone knows and loves. However, people only see what he allows them to. No one knows what Adam is truly capable of. After witnessing Livia’s accident, Adam sees something intriguing in her quick recovery, something that gives him hope that he’s not alone.
Adam is the only one whose emotions Livia can’t read. Afraid of not knowing what goes on behind his dark eyes, Livia decides to keep him at a distance. Livia was special and she knows it.
She can empathize with people. She could feel their emotions. She could feel their pain, happiness, anger and most of the times, it makes her unhappy knowing what other people are feeling. As time passes by, she began to develop more abilities that she was forced to hide from her adoptive parents. She thinks her biological parents have the answers to her questions. But will finding them really answer her questions or will it lead her to more questions?
Adam was your normal highschool golden boy. At least, that is what everyone around him thinks. But there was more to him than meets the eye. He only allow people to see what he wants them to.
When Livia and her family moved to Whidbey Island, she meets Adam and unfortunately, sparks didn't fly (at least at first). For the first time, Livia couldn't feel an emotion. She couldn't read Adam's emotion at all. It made her curious as to why he was the only one immune to her ability.
The closer they got to each other, the more they learn about the secrets that lurk behind their true identity.
THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS
First of all, I would like to thank Patricia Vanasse for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. It was absolutely amazing and am very honored to read and review it!
Alright so my thoughts on this book is that it was very unique. That is actually what first caught me about this book. There was no cliche-ish pathetic heroine who needs to be saved by a swoonworthy and strong hero. That was not the case here.
I liked Livia. She was very persistent in searching for answers. She was strong and not whimpy. She was not a damsel in distress that needs saving all the time. I guess sometimes she was impulsive like her decision to go back to New York just because she wanted to know about something. A very bold and dangerous decision but she made it.
Adam. Hmmm. I wasn't really extremely blown away by him at first because I thought he was a jerk but as the story goes, boy he made up for it. I guess that's the only thing that I found wrong with Adam but other than that he was a pure sweetheart! Oh and did I mention he was goodlooking? LOL.
I would have to say that it was a slow read for me though, hence why I have not given it a perfect 5 stars. The real bulk of the story for me started when I was I think about half or probaly 60-70% on the book. That was where things started making sense and when the story really got more intense.
Oh and I did like the chemistry between Adam and Livia. They were attracted to each other yes but it wasn't i-want-to-be-with-you-forever-at-first-sight kind of love. I really liked that! That earned this book tons of points for me.
I really really hate cliche in books. It is very rare that a book will not have that type of pattern: girl is pretty but doesn't know it then goodlooking guy makes pretty girl feels she's beautiful, saves her from herself and then they live happily ever after! I just noticed that it has been a very common and overused type of plot in most of the YA books right now and its getting kind of old. Resilient, fortunately, is not one of them.
Oh did I say that I'm also a bit angry and upset?!
Why?
It's because of that freakin' cliffhanger!!
Oh geez you are so cruel!!

My Opinion of This Book: Resilient is one of my new favorites of all time.

Let me just start off by saying I'm in love with this book, so in love that I finished it in one single sitting. ONE SITTING. When was the last time I read a whole entire book in less than one day? It's been awhile. I actually think this is the first book that I've read in one sitting this year. So obviously this book was insanely fantastic (and you know, you should really read it if you haven't ).
●The Plot/Storyline:
Livia has always been able to read everyone's emotions, until she stumbles over a boy named Adam. She can't read him at all. She tries to keep her distance, but fails, he's too alluring.
As they learn more about each other, they realize that maybe they aren't alone.
The plot was really fresh and addicting. I mean, I literally devoured the whole book in about 4 hours. It was just so fast-paced and intense.
●Livia: I'd say Livia is probably one of the best and strongest YA heriones out there. She doesn't give up, she's focused, and is determined to find answers. And most importantly, she's independent. She doesn't need some guy to save/keep her happy. Also, I loved the fact that she actually cares about her family, unlike most teenagers who get annoyed by them.
●Adam: I think I have a thing for characters named Adam (oops?). No, but really, every single Adam that I've come across I've liked (ex; in Shatter Me, in Eve & Adam, etc). And this Adam, well...I think I'm in love (#newbookboyfriend). Really, he's so freaking adorable, cute, caring; he has irresistible charm.
●The Romance: A lot of people would argue that this is instalove, but the romance in this book actually felt real, it didn't seem annoying or unrealistic. It was more like insta-attraction, which is completely realistic. Then their relationship grew deeper. And what can I say? I ship it, I ship it hard.
●The Writing: The writing was flawless. I mean, it is really difficult to write two POVs, especially when it's male and female (trust me, I'd know, I write stories on my free time) but Patricia nailed it. Adam and Livia had their own unique and amazing voices.
●The Ending: My goodness, well, that has to be one of the best cliffhangers ever is all I can say. Insanely good.
OVERALL.
This is my favorite read this year by far! This book was just so intense and fantastic; I was completely hooked throughout the whole thing.

This book was a recommendation from a great friend. I had the opportunity to receive a copy from the author and I’m very thankful for the chance to read and enjoy this book.
This book is very easy to read, the language is simple and the book is very easygoing, not wasting too much time in unnecessary details but at the same time taking the time to give us explanation enough to understand what is going on. There were some parts that were a little rush but the book is so enjoyable that it didn’t bother me , it’s the kind of book that when you reach the end you think “oh , it’s done already? Noooo” , it’s a fast read and good enough so you don’t really bother if something is missing here or there.
Possible spoilers alert : I liked that Livia didn’t jump already into Adam arms like every girl is used to do and the mystery between what is happening around them helped to keep me cheering up and wishing for them to be together. I like that the author introduced the mean girl from school enough to show us that every school has a mean girl but she didn’t waste too many time on her , like I said before, showing us a little bit of everything but not wasting time with unnecessary details. I liked to see that Kyle is a loyal friend and not one more of these friends like most of books that didn’t care about anything but stay with the girl he likes. He chose stay away from Livia in respect for Adam. I loved the interaction between Brianna and Livia. Brianna is very easy to talk, funny and friendly. I like that Livia values her family although she doesn’t stop looking for answers she never put in doubt her love for her family. She is strong and not the kind of girl who waits for people do things for her.
I was enjoying seeing Adam acting like a jerk on the beginning when in reality he is nothing more than a sweetheart. His caring for Livia is very clear and it’s very easy to wish this couple to be together forever, but at the same time it’s good to remember that they don’t live in a bubble only thinking about themselves, they care and still spend time with their family and friends.
The book develops in a good pace, keeping the mystery and leaving you wondering what is going to happen next but at the same time giving you explanations enough to make sense. The characters are introduced on the right time so you have time to get used to know them. The plot is interesting and entertaining and well distributed along the book. You have chance to see the doubts, the fun, the love, the worries, the run, the mystery, sacrifices, suspicious, a little bit of everything along the book.
The end. I was expecting that but at the same time I was hopeful I could be wrong. I think it’s a good end, the cliffhanger was necessary to give room for a good story for the next book. For me the end was very emotional, I could get inside of the characters and feel their emotions and confusion. Thanks to my friend now I have the opportunity to share with all of you my opinion about this great book. Can’t wait to read the next one. ;)

Damn! What did you do with my sweetheart. Oh agony!

Ever since I did cover reveal for this book I was really curious about it. It sounded like something new and it's been a while since I've seen something new in paranormal world. Luckily I didn't have to wait long and soon enough I started reading this book.
While everything starts with Livia, a girl who has to move from the New York and leave everything behind and settle in a smaller town - it isn't easy for her. She knows she is capable of doing many things and also afraid that she might not be able to control them. Her biggest fear is that she has no idea what's happening to her nor what new thing can happen tomorrow. Still she promises herself that she will try. Luckily for her she meets Adam, a boy who has supposed to help her with horses but at the same time the boy she shares more than she could imagine.
It all might have started typical with a girl who has is different and then meeting a boy and trying to hide her real power soon enough it started to be different. First with their powers, it was unique for me and I was really curious about the whole story. Also the relationship between the two of them was so sweet that I couldn't help but cheer for them. When everything started to be more intense and when things started to get more complicated I was afraid for them.
Even though this book ends with cliffhanger it only makes me want the next book even more. I can't wait to see more and discover more about the powers and their lives. But above all I need to see what happens with my sweetheart!

It was fine. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I felt as if I was being told what was happening instead of being shown. The writing just seemed a bit stilted. The concept was intriguing. I've heard it before, but still, I'm always one for government conspiracies and experiments on the loose. I just wasn't too fond of the delivery.
There was a massive case of insta-love. I can understand liking someone right off the bat, but they honestly started dating within a few days of having met each other. And the "L" word came in to play shortly there after. The book is presented through two POVs: Livia's and Adam's. Livia was....weak, to me. Literally, when there was a fight seen and Adam told her to run, she ran. Afterwards he found her hiding behind the building. And then Adam. I didn't swoon. And when I don't swoon, stuff doesn't happen. I didn't feel the magic. Adam was just really flat. He and Livia would say things that you just don't hear people say. Ever. As a result there were some pretty cheesy moments.
I just felt like not enough happened. Nothing really made my heart pound in anticipation. It was an okay book.

Three and a half stars: A suspenseful and exciting story about two teens with extraordinary talents.
Livia tries to soothe her jangled nerves by picturing water. She is about to leave the only home she has ever known. Livia and her family are moving to the Pacific Northwest where Livia can escape the constant turmoil she experiences every day on the streets of New York City. Livia at seventeen, has unique, inexplicable abilities. Her empathetic ability is the one that causes her anxiety. She can feel the emotions of everyone she encounters. Hopefully, in the quiet confines of Washington, she will escape. What she doesn't expect is to find someone who is a bit like her, but as they come together, danger strikes. Can Livia escape her terrifying past?
What I Liked:
*This book grabs you and draws you in from the first pages. I enjoyed following Livia and learning more about her exceptional talents. Along with Livia, there is Adam, who also has unique traits. I liked the mystery and suspense surrounding the pair and their extraordinary abilities.
*The story is told via dual narratives. You get to see everything through Livia and Adam's eyes. I am always excited when I can immerse into each character's head, especially since I can see how they feel about one another. In fact, books told with two view points are becoming my favorites these days.
*The romance starts out on the rocky side as Adam and Livia meet and immediately bash heads. Yet there is a hint of attraction that continues to grow. I liked that the pair developed feelings before they knew the whole truth about each other. There isn't a love triangle, even though there are possibilities for additional love interests, nothing solidifies. It is a straightforward and enjoyable romance.
*There is an air mystery and danger from the get go. It is apparent that someone is hiding the truth about both Adam and Livia. Soon they are being hunted. I liked the suspenseful buildup, and the startling revelations, and the constant guessing as to the why and how they possessed their abilities.
*Once the reason for Adam and Livia's talents is exposed, I was riveted. There are some chilling revelations regarding their births and their pasts. It is a frightening concept that is frightening because it could happen.
And The Not So Much:
*I found the first half of the story to be very engaging. After the half way point, the book lags a bit, and I felt it became a bit repetitious. It gets hung up a bit as Adam and Livia quarrel, and it takes awhile before the plot moves forward. This isn't a bad thing as I could see that the author was taking her time to flesh out her characters and establish her foundation. Thankfully, after that it ratchets up again and moves into the dangerous and exciting parts of the book. In fact, the final portion launches the story into new territory and it sets it up for an exciting sequel.
*I hated the inclusion of the skanky mean girl Lindsey. I could have done without her in the story. I don't think she added anything to the overall plot. She was nasty and needy and just plain awful.
*While the parents of both Adam and Livia are somewhat involved, there was a scene that made me scratch my head. Livia, while her parents are away for a couple of days tending to her ailing grandmother, manages to fly to New York and back and her parents are none the wiser. I felt this was a bit far fetched.
*Uncle Henry appears to be hiding something from the very beginning. Even after his confessions, I still felt like I was missing something. I hope that his character appears in the next book because I want to know more about him and his past.
*Just when the story was getting good and even more interesting, it ends on a cliffhanger with a whole string of unanswered questions. Leaving me wanting more of the story.
Resilient is an exciting and entertaining story that follows two seventeen year olds who have unique abilities. Follow them as they search for the secrets that will unlock their past. The clock is ticking and danger is lurking behind every corner. This book lays out a solid foundation for what promises to be an action packed sequel. I am very much looking forward to seeing how the story will progress.

Livia at seventeen, has unique, inexplicable abilities. Her empathetic ability is the one that causes her anxiety. She can feel the emotions of everyone she encounters. Hopefully, in the quiet confines of Washington, she will escape. What she doesn't expect is to find someone who is a bit like her, but as they come together, danger strikes. Can Livia escape her terrifying past?
What I Liked:
*This book grabs you and draws you in from the first pages. I enjoyed following Livia and learning more about her exceptional talents. Along with Livia, there is Adam, who also has unique traits. I liked the mystery and suspense surrounding the pair and their extraordinary abilities.
*The story is told via dual narratives. You get to see everything through Livia and Adam's eyes. I am always excited when I can immerse into each character's head, especially since I can see how they feel about one another. In fact, books told with two view points are becoming my favorites these days.
*The romance starts out on the rocky side as Adam and Livia meet and immediately bash heads. Yet there is a hint of attraction that continues to grow. I liked that the pair developed feelings before they knew the whole truth about each other. There isn't a love triangle, even though there are possibilities for additional love interests, nothing solidifies. It is a straightforward and enjoyable romance.
*There is an air mystery and danger from the get go. It is apparent that someone is hiding the truth about both Adam and Livia. Soon they are being hunted. I liked the suspenseful buildup, and the startling revelations, and the constant guessing as to the why and how they possessed their abilities.
*Once the reason for Adam and Livia's talents is exposed, I was riveted. There are some chilling revelations regarding their births and their pasts. It is a frightening concept that is frightening because it could happen.
And The Not So Much:
*I found the first half of the story to be very engaging. After the half way point, the book lags a bit, and I felt it became a bit repetitious. It gets hung up a bit as Adam and Livia quarrel, and it takes awhile before the plot moves forward. This isn't a bad thing as I could see that the author was taking her time to flesh out her characters and establish her foundation. Thankfully, after that it ratchets up again and moves into the dangerous and exciting parts of the book. In fact, the final portion launches the story into new territory and it sets it up for an exciting sequel.
*I hated the inclusion of the skanky mean girl Lindsey. I could have done without her in the story. I don't think she added anything to the overall plot. She was nasty and needy and just plain awful.
*While the parents of both Adam and Livia are somewhat involved, there was a scene that made me scratch my head. Livia, while her parents are away for a couple of days tending to her ailing grandmother, manages to fly to New York and back and her parents are none the wiser. I felt this was a bit far fetched.
*Uncle Henry appears to be hiding something from the very beginning. Even after his confessions, I still felt like I was missing something. I hope that his character appears in the next book because I want to know more about him and his past.
*Just when the story was getting good and even more interesting, it ends on a cliffhanger with a whole string of unanswered questions. Leaving me wanting more of the story.
Resilient is an exciting and entertaining story that follows two seventeen year olds who have unique abilities. Follow them as they search for the secrets that will unlock their past. The clock is ticking and danger is lurking behind every corner. This book lays out a solid foundation for what promises to be an action packed sequel. I am very much looking forward to seeing how the story will progress.

Love love love love love! This was such a good book, and I can't wait to read the second!
Resilient is a story about superhumans. In particular, the story focuses on Livia, a transplant to the Pacific Northwest from NYC, and Adam, the bad boy/Mr. Popular at the school she transfers to. Now, everyone has secrets about themselves, but these two have secrets that, should they get out, will bring the vultures circling to make use of or study them. Livia can sense people's emotions, while Adam has an ability to control at least one - anger. For some reason, their powers do not work on each other - an immediate clue that something is different about the other. As their relationship forms and develops, the secrets start dividing them. But, when evidence comes out that proves to both of them that they're similar, they share their skills with each other. They may have found someone that can accept their secrets and maintain the confidence, but would everyone? What consequences will come if someone else realizes what they can do?
The story itself, I adored. The concept isn't that original, but it's the implementation that I love so much. The chapters alternate between being in Livia's or Adam's POV, so you're able to get in each of their heads. There's the trade off of not having anything be much of a surprise in doing so for that in depth, "put yourself in my shoes" kind of story. I think it's completely worth it though, there are still plenty of mysteries, things I don't want to even brush on in fear of spoiling big reveals for anyone. There are things I wonder about even after the story - with how crazy developed the supporting characters are, I want to see some drama! Adam's got a psycho ex that could prove very interesting in the future :)
I also really liked the level of detail. It was almost always perfect. I don't want to feel like I'm reading a Grapes of Wrath fan's writing, I want succinct. In explaining how the characters look or feel, or the PNW setting, there's just enough information so you can imagine what the scene looks like. I'm not a big fan of the books that go very quickly from hate to love. It's a little quick, but not too bad. Given the book's length and pacing, writing out more of the mundane details or coming up with additional drama isn't really needed.
If you're into YA/romance/fantasy type stories, you'll enjoy reading this. It doesn't go for the standard vampire/shifter stuff that's so popular right now. Even if the story is not super original, it's different enough from the current releases that it's quite refreshing. If you want a story where you empathize with the characters, a story with a scary amount of reality to it, pick this up. You'll enjoy the ride!

It's always so great to be surprised by a book you've agreed to read for review, especially for a tour. That was the case for this novel. I always trust Candace's judgement, but this novel was really great! It had a great romance, unusual supernatural abilities with a plausible reason for the characters to have then, lots of secrets and villains, but, and I hate these, a huge cliffie. God do I hate those. Still, I did really enjoy this novel. And I am eager to read the next in the series.
Livia has always hidden away from people because she's empathic and it's almost excruciating for her to live in NYC and be around all those people feeling all those feelings. She does have two best friends which are mentioned several times as she's leaving them when the novel opens to go completely across country to an island off the coast of Washington, Whidbey Island. It's a welcome change for Livia. She's a strong runner, fast due to her enhanced abilities and she enjoys running, swimming, horseback riding. She is no shrinking violet. She doesn't actively seek danger, but she's active and strong. She is aware that she was adopted and is seeking her biological parents only to answer the questions about her unique abilities most of which she keeps hidden from her parents. She has an overwhelming sense of guilt about their guilt they feel because she can feel everything they feel and they can't shield it from her. Did I lose you? It's not complicated, really. Livia is an everyday, all American girl except for her unnatural ability to feel what everyone else feels, her superspeed and some new things that are developing.
Then she meets Adam. And she can't read his feelings at all. And Adam, who keeps his abilities from everyone but his best friend, can't seem to use his abilities on her. They are different but the same. They get off to a rocky start. Adam acts like a kindergartner with a new box of crayons and he won't share the lake which is half on his property and half on her property. Livia, being new, isn't sure of herself so she lets him have it. But they overcome their rocky start and become friends, then closer. Livia makes close friends almost instantly, being empathetic would probably make her very likable. Everyone wants to be understood.
Then when the two, Adam and Livia push for answers, they come from an unexpected place and have unwanted consequences. "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it," one of them quotes, too little, too late. And then, there's the cliffie. BAM! I knew it would happen, there was foreshadowing. But I hate them. That's my only fault with the novel. My copy wasn't the shiny polished copy that's on sale. I read an ARC so the mistakes I saw were expected. I loved that the chapters switched off one from Livia's point of view and the next from Adam's. I love to see what the characters think of each other. Adam has it BAD for Livia. So I need the next book soon. The sneak peek at the first couple of chapters were not enough!

I have a feeling that Ms. Vanasse is going to be one author we are all going to love and want to watch as her name and her work grows. I truly am blown away but her writing and can't even believe this is her debut novel. The whole book was so well done, so well thought out and executed that I am sad it is over. I want more and I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Livia and Adam.
This story was completely engaging and had me enthralled from the very first page. It has been awhile since I have been this excited about something in the YA genre. It is rare that you come across something that isn't just a poor initiation or copy cat of those books or series we have all come to love and know. For whatever reason it really is hard finding something unique in the YA fantasy department and Vanasse has managed to create something that I think will appeal not only to those that love YA but to those that love fantasy and the paranormal as well. I am not a huge fantasy fan but this was right up my alley and appealed to me on so many levels. I loved Livia and Adam, their strong personalities, their abilities, their relationship, their families, I really enjoyed it all.
This may be a new series from a new, unheard of author, but it won't stay that way. I have a feeling people will be talking about this book, this series and the author a lot over the next few months as word gets around about her and more and more people give this one a try. I can see so many people falling in love with the writing and the characters and whole concept behind who Adam and Livia are. I know I am a fan and I can't wait to read more so much so that I am not even going to tell you any more about what this book holds, I am simple going to tell you to pick it up and experience it for yourself, I don't think you will be disappointed and I can only see this series getting better and better as it goes. "Resilient" is a really good story if you're a fan of paranormal, suspense and romance. It is more of a YA kind of book since the main characters are eighteen. The writing was good with the two different point of views, the storyline was well developed and kept me hooked until the end. I liked the characters but Livia was a little naive sometimes, and that was expected but I wish she wasn't. I love reading a book with a strong heroine, so I hope she'll be that in the second book.
When Livia's family moved in next door to Adam's family, they both didn't really know how to react with each other. Livia because Adam is the first person she can't empathized with and that put her off. After that, they'll slowly develop feelings for each other and found themselves with secrets on their own that they're afraid of sharing. They have abilities normal humans don't possess, they'll learn what they are and why. But people are chasing them since they were born. But now, they've found them.
Their abilities will be more than necessary if they want to fight the Agency. They need to act, and fast because the Agency isn't going to give up. It's dangerous, but what other choice do they have?
I'm looking forward to read the next instalment "Awakened". That scene with Adam just broke my heart and I hope Daniel and Livia will become close friends.

Resilient is filled with mystery, suspence, and a little bit of romance as well. I really enjoyed reading this book. The book begins with a young doctor meeting a lady in the parking lot and she warns him that "they" have taken one of her kids and that his is next. She then urges him to get his kid to safety to protect her.

Then we meet Livia, an extraordinary young girl who can feel every emotion around her. This "gift" causes her so much pain and strife. She is continually trying to control her ability. Livia and her family live in New York but her father has decided to move them to another town to start over.
Livia starts her new school and immediately meets Adam. She is drawn to him but not sure why. Adam has a secret that no one knows and he lives daily trying to protect it. Livia has an accident and Adam is the one who finds her. He then discovers her secret and tries to get her to talk about it.

This is one of those books that when you finish reading it, you’re like “where have you been all my life?” I was so overwhelmed by it I didn’t want to put it down and say goodbye to the characters and face real life. I mean, I didn’t actually said goodbye to the characters ’cause there’ll be more.
Resilient is told by both Livia and Adam, two teenagers who are anything but ordinary. Livia was adopted when she was only a baby whilst Adam lived his life believing it was his to live. However, these two teenagers have something uncommon and something that might jeopardise their life and their families if they are not careful. Which they aren’t.
Livia has the ability to empathize with people and she’s slowly discovering other abilities she didn’t know about. Adam can feel people’s anger and smooth it down and, he too, is discovering that he has more powers than that. Together they find out the truth about their identity and together they have to face it.
The beginning of the book was slow paced with nothing that exciting happening apart from chapter one where you can immediately tell that something is off. However, as soon as Livia moves with her family and meets Adam, everything begins to unravel before us. And that’s when the fun and the excitement begins.
Livia can’t empathize with Adam and that surely triggers something within her and makes her, and consequently us, curious. Though Adam can feel Livia’s temper shift, he can’t smooth it as he normally can with everybody else. They are soon drawn to each other not only because of these peculiarities which they want to figure out, but also because of a deep magnet that makes them almost dependable of each other. They quickly fall in love and quickly know that the secrets they are keeping, will be their undoing.
Each perspective was amazing to read and experience. Livia’s feelings are more deep and trustworthy when it comes to her family than Adam’s and she’s determined to find her biological parents knowing that by doing such, she’s hurting her adopted ones. But she believes that in finding them, she’ll find the answers to her “freakiness”.
Adam’s are more rebel and radical. He doesn’t know he’s adopted but never really felt like he fit in despite all the attention and popularity he has. When he meets Livia, it’s like he becomes whole and finds the place where he truly belongs and someone with whom he can be him. What both of them don’t know is that the more they know about their abilities and about each other, the more in danger they’ll be.
What began as a simple romance with a slice of supernatural mystery to it, soon modified into an action-paced science-fiction chase to the truth. Adam and Livia are face with decisions that will hurt them and those they love but they have to make them nevertheless. Nothing is fair and nothing is safe and not even their powers will help them out.
Resilient is a book that makes your toenails crawl and your heart beat unsteady as a drum. You want to badly dig out the truth but you have to stick with Livia and Adam and discover it at the same time as they do. You create theories inside your brain but when the truth is told, it’s not what you were expecting.
Patricia Vanasse managed to make me edgy till the very end of the book and she also made me gasp in shock and surprise and made me want to beg, on my knees, for something not to happen. It happened nevertheless but still… You can’t take anything for granted in this book, trust me.
Taken as a whole, this was a freaking awesome book that has all the ingredients to be the beginning of a new YA phenomenon. Action, romance, science-fiction mixed up with teenager angst and growing pains, this book will be a total killer. Mark my words!

It would be difficult to be around people if you were an empath. Imagine feeling everyone’s anxiety, fear, and anger. It would be overwhelming. I could see where this would be especially difficult for a teenager. It’s hard enough dealing with all the angst of becoming an adult. Add to that constantly fighting to keep up a barrier and anticipating and dreading a birthday.
Every few years, around her birthday, Livia develops a new ability.

Their first meeting doesn’t go so well, but they grow on each other.
Livia wonders if not being able to read Adam is the only reason he gets on her nerves or is it that he seems to have the upper hand that puts a burr under her saddle.
As they get to know each other, their feelings change. They begin to like each other, a lot.
They both have secrets and fears. They have more in common than they know.
Will these two be able to trust each other? Be able to set aside their fears and reveal their secrets?
And are they prepared for the danger that’s approaching fast?
I enjoyed when Livia and Adam swapped quotes to each other.
“A mistake is just another way of doing things.”
“A compliment is something like a kiss through a veil.”
I looked forward to these.
The transition from one point of view to the other was smooth and easy to read. I never felt like I didn’t know who was speaking. It worked well for this book.
Livia and Adam are very strong characters and won a place in my heart.
I’m still not too sure about their parents though. I’ll have to see how they are in the next book.

There are many more characters that add to this story. Some I thought were villains were actually good guys and sometimes I had my doubts about others. Kept me on my toes and curious.

Resilient was an interesting story, I was quite taken by the storyline and mostly by Livia and Adam both abilities, history/past and their relationship. The secret surrounding their past and powers was gripping, a real treat!
I liked the fact that Livia was adopted and that she knows about this situation, plus, she and her family were trying to undercover the source and reason of her "powers" which is mostly unusual. Parents tend to hide the truth from their children, but Livia's parents didn't.
Adam was my favorite character, he was the perfect representation of the typical, cute, sexy, popular teenage boy from the small country town, but he was also caring, courageous and concern about Livia's wellbeing.
I also liked the weirdness about Livia and Adam true nature. When we finally had some clue, it's almost the end of the book and everything seems to fall into place and into action from this point. I liked the fact that it was fast-paced at this moment, but it takes a lot of time before we (the readers) got some real answers (not them all).
I didn't like the way this story ended because the author, Patricia Vanasse, manage to bring me at the edge to the cliff with that one and now, I'll have to wait and read the second book to know what will happen to Adam and Livia (clever...)
I recommend this book to every reader who is looking for something YA and Paranormal with an interesting plot, characters, mystery and ending.

Resilient is Vanasse’s debut novel, and the first in the series. It is about a young girl that has always had a hard time fitting, she knows just how different she is from the those around her. She is an empath, and reading emotions from everyone she comes in contact with doesn’t make it any easier. And with the years passing, she gains more abilities, and she wonders if she will ever be just a normal teenager. There are so many questions, like why she is the way she is, and are there others like her? She really isn’t prepared for the answers.
The two main characters were Livie and Adam. Livie is a great character, she is has always known the abilities she possess will never allow her to be like the kids she so desperately wants to fit in with. When her parents moved their family to Seatle, and she gets to start trying to fit in all over again. Adam is an interesting guy, he seems to be good at sports, he trains horses and enjoys riding and seems to not have any issues fitting in. He has a mysterious side to him as well. These two are so different but a like in many ways, and don’t realize just how much they have in common.
The story was more character driven than anything else and is told from alternating POV’s from Livie and Adam. For most of the book, it is about getting to know more about them and their families. Livie has wonderful parents that love her, and an uncle that is trying to help her find some answers about herself. But digging in the past bring danger, not only to Livie but to Adam as well. There were so many mysterious people, and Vanasse did a good job keeping me guessing who was really helping them, protecting them and who was out to hurt and exploit them both. Toward the end, some of the questions that arose throughout the story were answered but there is so much to the story I am hoping they will be answered in the next book, and the ending was a cliffhanger but not in a bad way. I certainly want to know what is going to happen with the truths that were discovered.
Resilient has a great concept, the characters were strong and believable with intriguing abilities and enough mystery that keeps you wanting to uncover more about them. Fans of YA paranormal and fantasy will enjoy this one.

But she doesn't empathize with him...
I couldn't pass up signing on for this blog tour since I really enjoy reading about people with supernatural powers. It must stem from my love of all things X-Men.
The Good
I enjoyed the supernatural powers the kids had and diving into them all as they developed. The story is told in dual POVs with Livia and Adam narrating. Each of these characters have powers that they don't understand and that no one else in their families do so it bonded them together (without them even knowing it at first.)
There is the catalyst of some people being after them so an air of mystery and danger follows them through the pages. There were quite a few times that I didn't know who to trust and I love that.
There were also a few things in this book that I haven't read about often before including horses and adopted kids. The change of pace to me was nice as was learning tidbits about things I haven't read up on a lot previously.
The story-line is really great. I am looking forward to the following installment so I can see where all this leads.
The Bad
The characters have a bit of immaturity that annoyed me at times. I'm hoping that this aspect turns into character growth throughout the story-line.
Resilient was mainly learning about the characters, their powers, who to trust, and what the story really is. The ending is a major cliff-hanger and I was disappointed that more didn't happen in this story. All that went on in this book set up the next installment very well, but I feel like with the way it was written and the ending that the second one will actually be better because of it. I was lucky to get to read an epilogue and the first chapter of the next book so I really appreciated that.
The Romance
Adam and Livia make a cute couple. They fit together rather well and since I got to read each of their thoughts, I know they both truly care about each other a lot. They have a very YA love, but it's a nice little romance to read.
Conclusion
Overall the powers and story-line are very interesting and I want to know more about Adam and Livia and where their story goes from here. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book since there is so much going on at the end of this one. Recommended for readers of YA Paranormal that don't mind the cons that I've listed.

I have a confession to make. I didn't really like the first half of this book. But why am I rating it so highly, you may ask? The answer: because the second half more than makes up for it!
Resilient is a novel told in first person from two different points of view. The first being Livia's and the second Adam's. Oddly enough this was not confusing at all, they each have alternating chapters and both of them have very distinct voices (which is great!) but for the first half of the book it seemed as though every sentence started with 'I'.
Now, I know first person can be difficult to write (I would imagine it's even harder to do it with two very different characters too), but it's a bit hard to get a reading flow going when almost every sentence starts with the same word. And they are short sentences, so it was a bit jarring.
However, this seems to stop past the half way mark, so the second part was much easier to read and flowed much better. I felt like I was being rewarded for sticking it out, but the truth was I had to keep reading. Because of the plot.
The plot. You guys. THE PLOT. I loved it. It felt unique and was fascinating – they know about their powers, people are keeping secrets, there's definitely something bigger going on. And oh boy, it's pretty big! (No, I'm not going to say what it is...) I was forever second guessing characters, are they bad? Are they good? Are they just odd?
And then it ended. I was like '...but why is it finished? I NEED THIS TO CONTINUE!'
Livia and Adam are both relatable characters, every chapter I changed my mind about who I liked most (that means I shouldn't play favourites, right?) but I think it's Adam. They're both similar with their fears and neither of them realise what trouble they are in until it's too late. They're like typical teens, except for these strange powers that they have – and I liked that. I even liked the romance angle (although could have done without his ex-girlfriend, she was just nasty).
So while the writing style was a little off putting at first, it is worth pushing through that to the end. I think the second book is going to be so good, and I can't wait to read it!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for my stop on the blog tour at Donnie Darko Girl.
I really loved Resilient! Patricia Vanasse made Livie's abilities seem so fresh and original. Livie is am empath and can feel everyone's emotions just by being relatively near them, which would be utterly exhausting. There were times Livie wasn't sure if the emotions she felt were hers or someone else's, which happens when she's around many people at once. Not only is she empathic, but every few years near her birthday, she develops new abilities. After the horseback riding incident, she discovers she has five abilities.
Livie is very down to earth and relatable. I connected with her character right away, and Patricia Vanasee did an excellent job conveying how exhausted having Livie's main ability makes her. I felt exhausted for her! It's understandable that Livie would feel like a freak and just want to be normal, but I didn't want her to feel that way. She's such a good person - there isn't anything she wouldn't do for those she loves.
I guessed correctly that Adam would grate on Livie's nerves from the beginning. He came across as snarky and arrogant, but as the story progresses, he shows different sides of his personality causing me to really like him. He's my book boyfriend now! I thought their interactions were entertaining and comical. He has surprising secrets but won't reveal them to anyone except his best friend, Kyle. I wanted Adam and Livie to confide in each other so they could not feel so alone and freakish. Every time they were about to tell each other, something caused them to continue keeping their secrets for good reason.
Resilient has everything - action, romance, danger, excitement, and suspense - and will keep you engrossed until the very end. I was on the edge of my seat and had to find out what the secrets were that Livie's family were keeping from her and if the people after Livie and Adam would eventually catch up to them. I was riveted and chose finishing this book over sleep, and I'd gladly do it again!

I am going to start with a few cosmetic things I liked about this book. I love the cover, although it’s a bit deceiving. I didn’t think I was reading the right book because the description and cover didn’t match. It’s great though. I absolutely loved the chapter headings. That may seem like something silly, but I thought they were beautiful.
I have to say that this book captured me from the very beginning. I honestly couldn’t put this book down. I really like Livia, and Adam. They are both such great characters. I feel for Livia from the very beginning. She has to go to a new school, a new town and has to basically start all over. I really like how the author gave her such a good friend right off the bat. I like that she made the transition from moving to a new town less painful for Livia. I think her judgments are too quick sometimes, but I am sure that comes with the abilities she has been given.
Adam at the beginning is one of those characters that you love to hate, but it doesn’t take long for him to redeem himself. Adams best friend Kyle is also another favorite character of mine. I really like how the author gives the MC’s such a great group of friends. Too many times in book the friends end up stabbing each other in the back, and this book made me happy with the friendships and bonds that were made.
This is an exciting book. It’s intense. It’s emotional. There is a point in the book that Livia is talking to her parents, and I couldn’t help but get teary. I might be a little emotional, but the way it was written made me cry.
The end of this book gets so intense, that I found myself clenching my teeth a lot. The author does a great job with the bad guys in this book as well. There are a few things that happen that I expected or could see coming, but there were also a few that surprised me. I love it when a book does that.
I am definitely looking forward to the next installment to this series. I really like how this book is written, and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

I really like how the author gives the MC’s such a great group of friends. Too many times in book the friends end up stabbing each other in the back, and this book made me happy with the friendships and bonds that were made.
This is an exciting book. It’s intense. It’s emotional. There is a point in the book that Livia is talking to her parents, and I couldn’t help but get teary. I might be a little emotional, but the way it was written made me cry.
The end of this book gets so intense, that I found myself clenching my teeth a lot. The author does a great job with the bad guys in this book as well. There are a few things that happen that I expected or could see coming, but there were also a few that surprised me. I love it when a book does that.
I am definitely looking forward to the next installment to this series. I really like how this book is written, and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

I didn't read the synopsis of this book and I am very glad that I didn't. I just dove right in and found myself enjoying every bit of this book. I think I should do this more ofter.
The book is told in back and forth point of views between Livia and Adam.
I love Livia. She is such a strong character. The things so has to go through at such a young age are things that not many other people could deal with. She knows she is adopted. She knows she has these strange powers. Some good, some bad. Then on top of all of that she has to pack up her life and move across the country.
Adam is a very strong character as well. He has his own unique personality that he doesn't change for anyone. Most guys his age could not have said no to Lindsey.
The whole time I was reading this book I was contemplating aliens. But, hey, genetically enhanced humans are okay too.
I really enjoy how the author keeps your guessing. This is one of those books that you really can't predict and I loved that so much. So many newer books are very predictable and are written around subjects that are excruciatingly over used.
Another big thing about this book is the fact that there are other prominent characters. The book isn't strictly centralized around the two main characters. Henry has a huge part in the book and shows up just as much as the main characters. Livia's family is also very prominent. Adams, not so much. Adams family seems withdrawn.
The ending made me want to curl up and cry. The dreams Livia is having make me really worried considering her one dream came true. So right now I'm on edge and cannot wait for the next book.

URGH! This book is driving me crazy. I think I'm still trapped in Livia's world, watching her learning to improve her skills and feeling sorry for Adam. I read this book only for four days, I could read it for a day but I had to go somewhere else, for real. First of all, I want to talk about the book cover. It's not sweet, it's not girly, but it's inviting. I do judge book from its cover. I feel relieved because the story is extremely great! I didn't buy the meaning of the cover at first, until I finished the book and now I know what it means.
The story is almost similar to I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore, just almost. I don't need to compare it because there are lot of different things. The story is written from two point of views, Livia's and Adam's. Livia has a lot of 'strange' abilities that you can not explain in science. She develops a new ability each year. The most annoying ability is she feels what others' feeling, except Adam's. So at this point, you can see the connection of Livia-Adam is built like Bella-Edward on Twilight saga. But do not worry! I found Livia and Adam's relationship is not irritating. Their love is strong somehow. Adam is probably the cutest guy in high school. He always has eyes starring at him wherever he goes.
'Life is getting harder everyday' and so is Livia and Adam's. Livia's uncle is keeping a big secret for a very long time. A fake sister suddenly shows up and haunts her. Livia puts Adam in danger. A man warns them to separate. Daniel, the lost son, makes the story more alive. He is they key. If you only willing to read a book with a happy ending, I don't recommend this book for you. But if you like fantasy, and adventure, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS! The ending is hanging. I'm curious and obviously can't wait for the next book :)

I received this in exchange for an honest review
I was very intrigued with this one. Its full of action, suspense, and romance. It starts off with Livia's point of view. You learn that she's different. She has these abilities and she doesn't know where they come from. She can empathize with people and later learn about some of her other traits. Livia seems like a very sweet and intelligent girl but she can't get close to anyone for fear of them figuring out she's different and her not being able to shut out there emotions.
We then meet Adam. You think he's the typical jock, who gets whatever girl he wants. Also come to find out he's the only person that Livia cant read emotions from. He came of as kind of jerky at first but then you realize that there's more to him than you know. He's different too. He can control peoples anger. He finds out that he also cant control Livia's anger.
They have this undeniable connection with each other but still have that fear of getting close to other people for fear of their secrets coming out. They have to learn to trust each other. Also with a threat looming with these mysterious people coming around and asking questions. It was frustrating with the back and forth of them not trusting each other and saying I'll tell you my secrets if you tell me yours. I wanted them to just start working together. Then it was the typical it will be safer for you if we stay away from each other.
All in all I really enjoyed the two of them together and the story. They we're both great characters and you got insight into both of with the alternating POV's in the chapters. I had fun trying to figure out what they were. The only downside was it did end on a cliffhanger that has me anxiously wanting the next story.

Resilient is an amazing debut from Patricia Vanasse. When I first saw the book cover I knew I was going to read this book but it is the opening line "I’ve been awake for the past hour, laying here on my bed and thinking my way through this last morning in New York City. I am glad we are moving, but, deep inside, I feel an enormous guilt. My parents say that the decision to move has nothing to do with me." With this I started reading and could not put this book down.
Resilient is a story about a girl Livia who does not feel like she fits in anywhere because she has a special ability that affects her everyday life. See she can feel every ones emotions around her and it gets tiring for her. She tries to block out all those emotions coming at her but she can't. All she wants is a normal life. So her family decides to move to a small island away from New York. The island is in the Northwest so she is thinking maybe just maybe she will be able to have some semblance of normal.
As she is enjoying her new place on the island Livia goes horse back riding when she suddenly falls and breaks her leg. But to her surprise her leg heals fast and she has no idea why or how it did that. As dawning comes to her Livia realizes she has a new ability and she is not sure what to do with it.
Then Livia meets Adam and things change for the both of them. For starters Livia can't read Adams emotions and that scares her because she can feel everyone else. Adam has abilities to that he keeps secret and he is intrigued by Livia and her abilities. Soon Adam wants to get to know Livia better but she pushes him away. Resilient was, admittedly, kind of a slow burn for me. When I first read the premise I knew that this would be something I'd want to read. Liv and Adam's story sounded intriguing. Two people with unexplainable powers meeting for the first time? Yes please! It may have taken awhile for me to really feel invested but, once I was, I couldn't put this down.
Livia doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere. I was a little wary about how sorry she felt for herself, but I soon realized that Livia is actually a very strong character. Despite not understanding her powers, or where they come from, she works hard to have a handle on them. I felt for her, and wanted her to gain that semblance of normal she was seeking. Unfortunately Adam comes into the picture and all that falls away.
Oh, Adam. Here's a character that I just wasn't really sure about. The thing about Adam is that he uses his wit and sarcasm to push people away. It's true that he doesit to keep his powers a secret. However it was tough to instantly fall in love with him. The banter between Adam and Livia at the beginning felt a little stitled honestly. Still, once they started to uncover their similarties, I felt more confident in their relationship.
In terms of plot, Patricia Vanasse does a great job of slowly letting the reader uncover what really makes Livia and Adam so special. When things started to fall into place, I couldn't stop reading. The ending is a cliffhanger, so maybe we can expect more? All I know is that Resilient ended up being a book I really did enjoy. If there is more, I'll be eager to get my hands on the rest of Livia and Adam's story.

Livia is a teenager in new york. Let's face it, that should be hard enough to deal with on its own. However Livia can also sense the feelings of every single person she encounters in her daily life. Overwhelmed by the number of people in New York, her family relocates to the pacific northwest.
Adam is also a teenager, but has grown up to become the typical popular, attractive, jock at his high school on Whidbey Island in the pacific northwest. What his schoolmates don't know is that he can easily adjust the strong feelings had by those around him.
When I was given this book to read for a review, I was worried that the teenagers would realize their gifts and then immediately "change the world." Instead, I found it really realistically told from both Livia and Adams viewpoints. They were both overwhelmed by their gifts, and amazed to meet someone else who might understand what each is going thru. I was very impressed with this book since I recently learned that it was Ms. Vanasse’s debut novel. I thought that it was very entertaining and had an interesting storyline about two teenagers that learn they have some not so normal abilities. I liked Livia because she was a very sweet girl that was able to feel every emotion of the people around her which prevented her from having any close relationships. This all changed when she met Adam, who was the very first person whose emotions she couldn’t feel. The more time that they spend together, the closer they become and they both learn that they have special abilities that neither of them can explain.
I didn’t like Adam in the beginning of the book because he seemed like a jerk but I liked how he was with Livia and he definitely started to grow on me by the end. The mystery in regards to their backgrounds was very intriguing and had me spellbound until the very end. Patricia Vanasse has created a great fantasy world with Resilient that I couldn’t help but enjoy. I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Vanasse because I’m sure it will be just as entertaining as Resilient.

I found Resilient a really interesting book. It was incredibly well written and thought-out. The characters draw you in and it gives readers a real YA book that doesn’t simply revolve around a doomed love triangle. It’s told from both the girl’s and boy’s point of views so gives the author more opportunity for depth of both characters and intrigue for the readers.
From a writer’s perspective I was impressed that present tense is used well and consistently throughout. Most books tend to be past tense, but writing in present really gives it an air of tension that past wouldn’t give. The plot was a little slow in places, but very believable – even though it deals with some sci-fi style themes.
The front cover is ok, but I feel it really doesn’t do the book justice. It really should have had both main characters on the front – as they are equally represented in the text. If I had been marketing the book, I’d have also stuck one of the horses in their too (horse led YA seems to be a genre all on its own so would have widened it’s instant appeal to potential readers)
Overall I’d give the book 4 out of 5 stars. Beautifully written and well plotted out. Looking forward to book 2.

Did I enjoy this book: Resilient is a cross between Twilight and X-men, but with fewer mutants and less angst. Well, maybe just a little less angst. There were a few things that irked me (I’m not sure an aversion to the elements really jives with genetic engineering, for example), but mostly I enjoyed it. Livia and Adam are easy to like, and though I found myself wishing for a bit more polish in the text, I nonetheless spent most of the weekend reading this book. I want to know what happens next!
Would I recommend it: Sure. It’s a quick read, and it’s fun. I might get tired of reading about teenagers with special powers falling in love someday, but today is not that day.
Will I read it again: I’d love to read the next book in the series!

This was a very captivating tale of suspense, love, and believing in yourself. I found it really hard to put down, especially at about the half-way mark and then on. Once I had reached that point, I stayed up until the middle of the night reading it, finally had to force myself to go to sleep, and finished it the next day. I loved this story and I am so glad to know there is at least one more on the way. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves suspense or paranormal romance. I absolutely loved how it was told through alternating viewpoints of the main characters, Livia and Adam. Patricia Vanasse is a wonderful author and I look forward to further books in this series, as well as any others that she writes.

Engaging and fun! Patricia Vanasse deftly weaves in elements of Livia and Adam's supernatural abilities, mixed with an air of mystery and hint of danger that make this book hard to put down.
The old adage don't judge a book by it's cover certainly holds true for this one. The cover, while beautiful, seems an odd choice for this book. The picture brings to mind Sleeping Beauty (fantasy), but the story is more like X-men (paranormal).
With a cliff-hanger ending, Resilient is basically a set up for a second book, but for readers who don't mind that, it is sure to be a delight.
