In 1665, when an epidemic of the plague forced Cambridge University to close, Isaac Newton, then a young, undistinguished scholar, returned to his childhood home in rural England. Away from his colleagues and professors, Newton embarked on one of the greatest intellectual odysseys in the history of science: he began to formulate the law of universal gravitation, developed the calculus, and made revolutionary discoveries about the nature of light. After his return to Cambridge, Newton's genius was quickly recognized and his reputation forever established. This biography also allows us to see the personal side of Newton, whose life away from science was equally fascinating. Quarrelsome, quirky, and not above using his position to silence critics and further his own career, he was an authentic genius with all too human faults.
Gale E. Christianson is retired from Indiana State University, where he served as Distinguished Professor of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History. He is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Huntington Library Fellow, and the recipient of numerous other grants and awards. Christianson lives in Terre Haute, where he continues to research and write.
Christianson writes for "the casual reader who wishes to know something more of Newton beyond his 'discovery' of universal gravitation." At just 130 pages, the book moves briskly along. I was engrossed throughout the book.
I stalled out in science sometime in high school, the subject not coming naturally to me. Christianson's book had just enough science to stretch me at times, but this book never made my head hurt.
As with all good biographies, there were a lot of moments in reading where I wanted to turn to my wife and share a Newton anecdote. What a fascinating man Newton was, "with all too human faults", as Christianson says. Christianson was able to simultaneously admire Newton, while not overlooking his interpersonal failings.
Perhaps I'll read Mitch Stokes' book on Newton next.
For i always adored Science, especially physics, Newton became my first role model, my first love and the first science hero i got to know, this book is a masterpiece, about Newton’s Biography, which i enjoyed every single paper of it! Anytime i feel like i dunno what to read i mostly reread my books, and this book is the one i reread more than 3 times!
I highly recommend this book to readers who love science and scientist biographies!
The biography, “Isaac Newton”, by Gale E. Christianson, is truly a “good read”. The major events in Newton’s life were portrayed using extremely evocative words, making his life story play like a movie in my mind. Newton’s life as a legendary scientist, or “natural philosopher”, intrigued me a lot and showed me a side of Newton I had never anticipated! It saddened me! I didn’t know that Newton, considered a respectable member of the Royal Society of London, indirectly led a young scientist, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, to suicide due to bad and unthoughtful communications around the invention of Calculus by both of them. The sad fact about this is that Newton’s “ugly story” of cheating Leibniz was discovered only years after the death of Newton. The only con about this book is that the language, especially the scientific jargon used to describe Newton’s discoveries, was sometimes difficult to comprehend. This would narrow down the variety of readers. Excluding that, I think this book was exceptionally well-written and portrayed Newton’s life through another eyeglass.
This book is called "Isaac Newton," and it is by Gale E. Christianson. This book is all about Sir Isaac Newton and how he became one of the best scientists of all time. He is known for his influence. One of his famous quotes was "There is no such thing as failure, there is only neutral and exceeding expectations." He is said to be one of the most influential scientists who ever walked on the face of the planet.
Isaac was a English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who not only worked on the science of gravity, but he discovered the three laws of motion which form the basic principles of modern physics. I enjoyed this book because they tell about his childhood and how he didn't like bullies and he beat up a bully for picking on him.
I recommend this book who like reading a lot of information about the scientific revolution and how Isaac Newton made is a whole lot easier on other scientists. he was one of the best motivators ever stated a scientists who Newton worked with. This book is great and I hope you enjoy it and learn something from it.
I would rate this book a 9.5 out of 10. I would give the book this rating because I got know some things about someone I never knew such as that he created the 3 laws of gravity and he went to the Trinity College of England. The words were sometimes difficult to comprehend. Otherwise, the book was fun to read and I really enjoyed it. This is on of the best biographies that I have read so far in my life.
A good concise biography. It seemed that this book did get into details of his relationships especially with the Royal society and the co-founder of Calculus Gottfried Leibnitz, but could have delved deeper into some of his works and thinking. Overall it does not paint a complete picture of the man.
I thought this book was very interesting to read. I thought it was interesting because I got to learn many different things that Issac Newton has done that I have never thought he's done. It talked about his his childhood about him growing up. It showed what he has gone through when he was a kid. I got really interested in Issac Newton because of this book.

This is an excellent digest version of the life of Newton, well suited to the reader who wants to know more about the remarkable scientist but feels no need for extreme detail. I learned quite a bit.
This individual is without question the pinnacle of the human intellect. Working alone during the so called 'annus mirabilis', the clockwork of nature has never been exposed by one man, so reassuringly and in so much detail. I never tire of reading Newton at his full cerebral prowess and can fully understand the people who lived and knew Newton thought he was a living God. Great read as an introduction to this true genius.
"Isaac Newton: And the Scientific Revolution", Gale E. Christianson is about the life of Isaac Newton. Christianson shows Newton's thoughts methods and accomplishments in the course of a 147 page book. Some of the accomplishments that Christianson highlights is Newton's laws of gravity, his theories on light, his creation of the first telescope and much more. Newton's very interesting life is shown through out this book as well, starting with his birth to his lonely, tragic childhood, to the days of his innovations surfaced, and finally to his painful death. Christianson was short and to the point with this biography, even though he made the words flow excellently on the paper, he did not elaborate on themes that interested me, like Newton's position of master of the Royal London Mint. I did learn a lot of unknown things that Newton had accomplished like his reshaping of the Royal Society (A group of scientist that was created by King Charles I), and how he was an alchemist trying to pull science and religion together. If you want straight forward answers to the life of Isaac Newton and go in a little depth with some of his minor but still great achievements than this would be a great book for you. If you would like to go further into some of Newton's ideas and concepts, you might want to try another book. I have rated this book a three out of five because it has insightful facts on Isaac Newton, but the author does not go in as much depth as I would have liked him to. I believe with more facts and focus on other actions that Newton did would give a better understanding to his life and goals that placed his as the highest scientist to ever walk the earth.
Perhaps one of the best Christmas presents ever given to the world would have to be the birth of little Isaac Newton on Christmas morning of 1642. Newton, it seems, was always somewhat odd. A loner. However, he never knew his father and his mother left him when he was just three years old, so you usually get out what you put in. With Isaac the world got mathematical calculus, frustrated forays into alchemy, the force of gravity as well as a new insight into the structure of light. Not bad for a reclusive Cambridge student of only 24 years of age. When a mass of one kilogram has an acceleration of one metre per second squared it exhibits a force of one Newton. I can still recall the F = m times a from my distant lecturer's days in Electronics. Thank you Sir Isaac. There's also the matter of the Newtonian telescope. Aa an amateur astronomer myself, well, thank you again Sir Isaac. Sure, he wasn't a man to get on the wrong side of. He didn't take too well to having his theories criticised, as the long feud with Robert Hooke bares witness,(from the little I know of Hooke, he was something of a wierdo), as well as his war with Liebniz. Someone said, 'it will take another Newton to understand Newton'. William Wordsworth summed him up thus, 'a mind for ever voyaging thro strange seas of thought, alone.'
Issac newton is considered by many to be the greatest genius of all time, he revealed the nature of light allowing us to explore the universe. He enabled us to calculate motion and predict change and distilled the force that unites the whole universe into a precise mathematical formula. Issac newton was also a complex, difficult and secretive man. Newton denied that god was trinity, he had studied the bible more thoroughly than any scientific question and he concluded that false texts had been inserted into the bible in the 4th century to assert Christ's divinity. Anti-trinitarian-ism was illegal you could be put to death for it, this was a dreadful secret that newton was at desperate pains to conceal all his life.
Talk about passion.... Isaac is a personality that I will never forget. He illustrated the extreme passionate life. Are his accomplishments worth the very life he had to devote. He could not find a release from his research.. it was all or nothing. We all need to understand the passion and dedication that very special people have to invest for accomplishment. The other view is, did Isaac have to basically give up any sort of life to make his scientific achievements; the discoveries may have come to him if he had gotten some mental help to temper his drive.
In the words of Statler & Waldorf, "It was... short! I loved it!" Newton was smart as shit, a control freak, and an asshole. I am happy I learned the other side to the man behind the myth. It's unbelievable how great the lengths he would go to in order to be given credit, beyond just finding the truth behind the science. Now, if only I could go back to my physics days and understand it all, and how he derived the theory with 17th century tools. This was an easy read, concise enough for a half-day reading.
Isaac Newton and the scientific revolution by Gale E. Christianson is definitely a great book for people who are doing reports. This book is a great time line of events that describe Newton's life from his early childhood, being filled with inventing little trinket to help around the house to his later life and discoveries. Like I mentioned before this book is great for reports as it is filled with accurate information that is in such detail you can almost feel his life in you own. I would recommend this to science enthusiasts such as myself and for people who want to feel smarter.
This book managed to introduce me in Newton's life. Since I didn't know much about him before, it helped, but many of the details and info's were based on suppositions. It had just enough Newton theories to convince me he was a genius without losing me in the forest of physics. It's mostly for the non-initiated, the things you find out from a Discovery documentary.
كتاب جميل يسرد سيرة اسحاق نيوتن ولكن لم يتطرق لانظمامه لمجلس الكنيسة الذي ذكره كتاب { دفنشي كود }
