Waltari was born in Helsinki and lost his father, a Lutheran pastor, at the age of five. As a boy, he witnessed the Finnish Civil War in Helsinki. Later he enrolled in the University of Helsinki as a theology student, according to his mother's wishes, but soon abandoned theology in favour of philosophy, aesthetics and literature, graduating in 1929. While studying, he contributed to various magazines and wrote poetry and stories, getting his first book published in 1925. In 1927 he went to Paris where he wrote his first major novel Suuri illusioni ('The Grand Illusion'), a story of bohemian life. In terms of style, the novel is considered to be the Finnish equivalent to the works of the American writers of the Lost Generation. (In Waltari's historical novel The Adventurer, taking place in the 16th century, the hero is a Finn who goes to Paris during his twenties and lives there a rather bohemian life). Waltari also was, for a while, a member of the liberal literary movement Tulenkantajat, though his political and social views later turned conservative. He was married in 1931 and had a daughter, Satu, who also became a writer.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Waltari worked hectically as a journalist and critic, writing for a number of newspapers and magazines and travelling widely in Europe. He directed the magazine Suomen Kuvalehti. At the same time, he kept writing books in many genres, moving easily from one literary field to another. He had a very busy schedule and strict work ethic. It has been claimed that he also suffered from insomnia and depression, sometimes to the extent of needing hospital treatment. He participated, and often succeeded, in literary competitions to prove the quality of his work to critics. One of these competitions gave rise to one of his most popular characters, Inspector Palmu, a gruff detective of the Helsinki police department, who starred in three mystery novels, all of which were filmed (a fourth one was made without Waltari involved). Waltari also scripted the popular cartoon Kieku ja Kaiku and wrote Aiotko kirjailijaksi, a guidebook for aspiring writers that influenced many younger writers such as Kalle Päätalo.
During the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), Waltari worked in the government information center, now also placing his literary skills at the service of political propaganda. 1945 saw the publication of Waltari's first and most successful historical novel, The Egyptian. Its theme of the corruption of humanist values in a materialist world seemed curiously topical in the aftermath of World War II, and the book became an international bestseller, serving as the basis of the 1954 Hollywood movie of the same name. Waltari wrote seven more historical novels, placed in various ancient cultures, among which The Dark Angel, set during the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 is probably the best. In these novels, he gave powerful expression to his fundamental pessimism and also, in two novels set in the Roman Empire, to his Christian conviction. After the war, he also wrote several novellas, showing particular mastery in this genre. He became a member of the Finnish Academy in 1957 and received an honorary doctorate at the University of Turku in 1970.

این کتاب اثری است تحقیقی از میکا والتاری نویسنده فنلاندی و پژوهشگر مسائل تاریخی و چنان که از آن پیداست وقایع تاریخی که در این کتاب به رشته تحریر درآمده، به دوران رسالت عیسی مسیح در سرزمین فلسطین اختصاص دارد و محتوای آن بر مبنای اسلوب داستان نویسی روایی استوار است.
نویسنده کتاب کوشیده است تا با ارائه شواهد معتبر تاریخی که بر پایه اقوال حواریون و متون اناجیل استوار است، تصویر روشنی از زندگی عیسی مسیح و دوران رسالت آن پیامبر راستین، در قالب داستانی دلکش و گیرا و با زبانی ساده و عاری از پیرایه و آراء ادبی ارائه دهد.
روایتگر این داستان جوانی است رومی که به تابعیت از سنت مذهبی رومیان به پرستش خدایان ساختگی اعتقاد داشته، تحت تاثیر مظلومیت و بی گناهی مصلوب و نورانیت و صفای چهره تابناک وی و برخورد شجاعانه در برابر مرگ، پرتویی الهی بر دلش می تابد و شیفته بی قرار حقیقت رسالتی می شود که عیسای مصلوب دعوت آن را از جانب حق بر عهده داشته است. روی این اصل تصمیم می گیرد برای کشف حقیقت و آشنایی با رموز رسالت و اسرار ملکوت عیسی دست به تلاش گسترده ای بزند.

Outstanding read! Waltari was exceptionally accurate with his historical fiction (have also read The Egyptian). This book is already in my top five favorite books of all time. It is period and Biblically accurate. He fleshes out a very dramatic and insightful story with regard to what the apostles and disciples must have been feeling during the time from the resurrection to Pentecost—it really makes you think. I could see every encounter having actually happened. Finally, he truly portrays the process of the soul of an unbeliever acknowledging and responding to the call of God through the many fazes from unbelief to belief—ending with a final test faith as the new believer embarks on his transformed life. In short, this guy gets it!

Sunt prezentate evenimentele Noului Testament, de la răstignirea până la înălțarea Domnului. Autorul se concentrează pe expunerea societății și mentalităților acelor timpuri, în perioada de început a creștinismului și, deși acțiunea cărții este simplă, descrierea personajelor, profunzimea gândirii lor, concepțiile epocii și limitele lor fac sarea și piperul acestui roman.

Роман у листах про римлянина Марка, який випадково стає свідком розп’яття Ісуса Христа й занурюється в пошуки істини — релігійної, філософської, політичної.
Це історія не про апостолів, не про Месію. Це — історія людини, яка намагається зрозуміти, що сталося, чому стратили того, за ким плакало небо, і як тепер із цим жити. Марк — освічена людина, яка раціонально осмислює світ, але саме чудо змушує його шукати Шлях.
Це не динамічна історія. Це радше мозаїка спостережень, діалогів і подій. Тут є Лазар, який хоче назад у могилу, Магдалина, яка ловить голубів, учні, які обрані Ісусом для поширення знань, але ті знання не для "всіх"(яка іронія). Усе це створює хитку атмосферу першого століття нової ери, коли християнство ще не набуло форми, а було розгубленим і тривожним.
Валтарі дуже близько тримається євангельського канону, описує чудеса як абсолютну правду — без сумніву, без переосмислення, без зусиль дати цьому філософську чи психологічну глибину. І мені цього бракувало. Марк приймає християнство надто легко. Він не проходить глибокого внутрішнього перелому. Хотілося інтелектуального виклику, а натомість це було радше спостереження збоку.
Також мені було складно емоційно повірити в його трансформацію. Він раціоналіст — то чому саме чудеса стали тригером, а не моральне послання? Чому він шукав істину, а прийняв усе так легко?
Зараз, коли пройшло вже два місяці після прочитання, я все ще ловлю себе на думках, що повертаюся до окремих образів і питань. Питання релігії для мене "заряджене" і поки я читала цю книжку - багато, що про себе дізналася. І, можливо, саме в цьому сила цієї книги — не в читанні в моменті, а в післясмаку і в питаннях, які ти собі ставиш після.
Не вважаючи цей роман зразковим, я бачу потенціал в цьому письменнику, точно хочу дати шанс іншим його романам. Кажуть(на гудрідз), «Єгиптянин», «Темний ангел» і «Етруск» — набагато глибші й цікавіші.

📌 Якщо хочете порефлексувати, поламати голову над вірою, чудесами і зміною світогляду — так.

Після 16 років у Дамаску Марк повертається до Риму разом із сином. Цього разу розповідає вже Мінут — підліток, який вперше бачить Рим напередодні 800-річчя міста. У центрі — дорослішання, віра і пошук себе.

Very interesting novel set in the aftermath of Christ's Crucifixion, with a wealthy Roman citizen stumbling on the event by chance and becoming fascinated as to why this "king" was executed. What makes it interesting is that unlike say BEN-HUR or THE ROBE, many of the familiar characters (i.e. the Apostles, Mary Magdalene, Simon of Cyrene) are not piously presented, but instead are complicated characters, running hot and cold emotionally, and obviously trying to make sense of what their Master now wants of them. The approach Waltari uses reminded me more of Lagerkvist's BARRABAS novel, and there's no doubt to me that Waltari was influenced by that Swedish book, see especially in his characterization of Lazarus, who like in Lagerkvist's book has come back to life not quite right: a bit odd and weird. The book anticipates the conflict that Paul's future mission would bring to light: are Gentiles also worthy of this new Kingdom or is for the Israelites alone? So while interesting, the book is also very talky and doesn't reach a real conclusion (I'll undoubtedly have to scour the used book racks for its sequel THE ROMAN to see if that answers some questions).

December 28, 2008من كتابخواني را به صورت جدي با ترجمههاي مرحوم (ذبيحالله منصوري) آغاز كردم. پيرامون ترجمههاي معروف آن مرحوم نقل و حديثهاي فراواني وجود دارد كه كاري به هيچ كدام از آنها ندارم. واقعيت امر اين است كه آن مرحوم حق بزرگي بر گردن بازار نشر ايران در دههي شصت و اوائل دههي هفتاد دارد. آنهايي كه يادشان ميآيد حتماً به خاطر دارند كه كتابهاي ايشان هيچ وقت در قفسهي كتابفروشيها نميماند، چه برسد به اين كه خاك بخورد. به نوعي ميشود گفت بازار نشر ايران تا حد زيادي، از كارگر چاپخانه بگيريد تا حروفچين و ناشر و توزيع كننده و كتابفروش به ايشان مديوناند

Setting is ancient Alexandria and Jerusalem during the time of Christ's Crucifixion.
Well-written detailed account of displaced Roman citizen researching prophesies in Alexandria,
then arriving in Jerusalem at the moment of the Crucifixion and the 40 days following.
Believable human drama of expectation, confusion, and false leads as characters try to make
sense of what the "kingdom" really is.
Enjoyed reading this book during Advent.

Testimony of the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
A novel by writer Mika Waltari. The first part, before the Senator of Rome, where he explores the Jerusalem region to accompany the followers of Christ and do his own investigation of the events related to the messiah. The book tries to witness the transformation of the protagonist, who being Roman and educated in philosophy, compares the philosophical, Christian and Jewish precepts. The intellectual exercises that he poses around the miracles and the resurrection are very interesting, raising mysteries and political-religious conspiracies, as well as the experience of the ascension of Christ. I also like some of the ironies that arise, such as discrimination, the healed who prefer not to be healed, or the useless miracles because at the beginning the apostles with the gift of languages did not make themselves understood, among others. I emphasize here that Waltari, despite being an eloquent narrator, works on the same themes in several of his works, such as religion, orphanhood, the temptations of women, among others. You will also find some criticism against some Hollywood images, or the testimonies of transformation that he did not achieve. However, as a whole it is an entertaining work that is worth reading. I left you to judge for yourselves. Greetings

Me gustan también algunas ironías que se plantean, como la discriminación, los sanados que prefieren no ser sanados, o los milagros inútiles porque al inicio los apóstoles con el don de lenguas no se hicieron entender, entre otros. Destaco acá que Waltari, a pesar de ser un narrador elocuente, trabaja los mismos temas en varias de sus obras, como lo religioso, la orfandad, las tentaciones de las mujeres entre otros. También encontrarán algunas críticas frente a algunas imágenes hollywoodenses, o los testimonios de transformación que no logró. Sin embargo, en su conjunto resulta una obra entretenida que vale la pena leer. Dejo que lo juzguen ustedes mismos. Saludos

Antaisin muuten paljon paremman arvosanan, kun oli todella hyvin kirjoitettu kirja ja samaistuin kovasti päähenkilöön, mutta naiskuvaukset tekivät lukemisesta usein raskasta. зацікавлений у нових філософських віяннях, римлянин Марк прибуває в Єрусалим, щоб розпитати про дивне, новомодне вчення юдеїв про Сина Божого, який ходить по воді і обіцяє вічне життя. Чисто для того, щоб було що розповісти подружці Туллії, якій увесь час пише листи в дорозі.
Хоч Юдея і є римською провінцією, але самі римляни помітно нервують поміж надто суворих євреїв, які ними гидують, і оберігають свої таємниці, плюс їх Бог, який любить пранки і може наказати вбити сина, в потім предумати.
Марк приїжджає у Єрусалим перед Пасхою, якраз коли треба було скоренько стратити всіх злочинців, щоб на релігійне свято вже не брати в руки батіг. Тож Марк потрапляє на публічну розвагу: страту на хрестах. Йому це абсолютно норм і чудовий шанс зробити стоїчну фізкультуру духа: «я підійшов ближче, щоб вигляд їх агонії між загартувати моє серце і дозволі надалі незворушно споглядати чужі страждання». І все було б окей, але придивившись ближче до однієї з таблиць на хрестах, Марк прочитав абревіатуру «ІНЦІ».
ну і далі починається Бунюель разом з Босхом: у суспільстві смута, перші християни дезорієнтовані, замість якогось екшену месія просто помер, як людина, з мінімальними специфектами. Марк вражений побаченим перестає голитись і ставить собі за ціль дізнатись Шлях до Божого царства і тому тягає за рукава апостолів і доймає всіх запитаннями про Шлях, ніхто не бажає говорити з ним поки у нього присутня крайня плоть. всюди бродять біблійні персонажі не знаходячи собі місця. Марія Магдалена ловить голубів і закочує очі, учні Ісуса залягли на дно (в ахуї), прокажені під шумок витягують у них кошельки, свіжовоскреслий зомбі-Лазар садить город і хоче назад в могилу. час від часу на периферії зору то там то сям зʼявляється воскреслий Ісус в образі садівника і каже загадкову притчу. всі суєтяться, Пилат заламує руки, бо просто хоче щоб пройшла мігрень……
іноді книга схожа на біблійний фанфікшн, АЛЕ, як на мене, добре передана сюрреалізм раннього християнства, коли ще дуже далеко до хрестоносців. Всі бояться і сумніваються + історичний контекст. А автор - фінський лютеранець, тому добре шарить цю тєму.

This book made me think about my relationship with faith and the Christian religion.
It happens during the forty days after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. It is told, through letters to his lover, by a Roman citizen that happens to be in Jerusalem at the time and gets deeply involved with the birth of Christianity.
As an historical effort is very interesting. It offers a candid view of the chaos and confusion of those first days. It is also a portrait of those first Christians: simple people divided between tradition and novelty, between the established order and a revolutionary new order of the spirit. People, in awe of the miracles of the charismatic Jesus but unable to understand his message. People who were asked to leave all behind in the name of the faith in an intangible kingdom.
It is also very ironic when you think that 400 years later, this revolutionary message became the establishment of Christian religion and started an epic career of monstrosities and bloodshed in the name of God.
But for me, the most important thing this book brings is this: I still don’t get it. True, being baptized and raised in Catholicism I have some collateral damages: for example, sometimes I think in terms of sins and virtues and when I am truly desperate I look up and ask help of God.
But when I read what he said, some things are beautiful, others I find bullshit and some I just don’t understand. I don’t feel doomed because of that, I don’t feel less, I don’t feel left behind, I think I just don’t fit in there.
I am closer to humanity than I am to religion I guess.

Oli tämä taas vaan niin valtavan ihana luettava! Siitä on aikaa kun viimeksi luin ja onneksi huomasin meidän kirjaston blogista lukuvinkin jossa tätä suositeltiin pääsiäislukemiseksi, kaivoin tän omasta hyllystäni ja luin uudelleen. On toi Waltari aika welho! Niin sen tuntuista tekstiä että itse oli paikalla kun Jeesus ristiinnaulattiin, kuoli ja haudattiin ja nousi kolmantena päivä kuolleista. Päähenkilö Markus todella hyvin toi ilmi miten hankalaa oli kokea tuollaista uskomatonta tuohon aikaan ja muutenkin ajankuvaus tuntui todelliselta vaikken voikaan tietää oliko se noin vai miten. Suosittelen ihan kaikille - miksei esim. myös yläkoululaisille - antaisi vähän perspektiiviä uskonnonopetukseen :)

I first became aware of Mika Waltari after picking up The Egyptian because of it being the ugliest cover I had ever seen. lol....but after looking up Waltari I realized that he had wrote alot of books with material I love. Soon after picking up The Egyptian I purchased The Roman and this book The Secret of the Kingdom....Great book of historical fiction at the time of Jesus crucification of a Roman citizen.....now I cant wait to read The Roman which is the sequel and yes will read any book this man wrote!!!!!

I have actually read this book years ago, but remembered very little of it. Revisiting it today, when I am older and better understand certain things, I still see it as extremely powerful. While I was a bit tired from time to time by long speeches and slight repetition (of the Roman hero being constantly turned down and out because of his not being a Jew), this is one of the books which do my soul as much good as the Bible itself. It is a wonderful reminder of who God is and that we all are invited into His kingdom.

I loved this book, Mika is a master of description and recital. I felt I was there, I could even feel the dust and the hot air while crucifiction of Jesus Christ.

Ay, qué libro tan bonito 🥹
Acompañar a Marco en su viaje de "auto descubrimiento" fue increíble, y tener una visión diferente de esos pasajes bíblicos tan importantes es una experiencia interesante
Aunque sentí la frustración de Marco, ya que al ser romano, en su búsqueda de respuestas dentro del cristianismo, fue cruelmente rechazado por algunos personajes 🥺
Pero creo que el final fue acertado... Cómo siempre, algunas frases de Waltari son icónicas, y si sique así, se va a convertir en unos de mis autores de ficción histórica favoritos

Myslím že som predtým ešte nečítal žiadnu historickú fikciu, no veľmi sa mi táto páčila.
Samozrejme že som veľmi ovplyvnený samotnou kresťanskou témou, sledujeme totiž príbeh rimana ktorý bol náhodou svedkom Kristovho ukrižovania a snaží sa zistiť kto to ten Ježiš vlastne bol. Tento román mi vedel priblížiť okolie/kultúru regiónu a náladu/zmätok 40-tich dní po ukrižovaní lepšie ako keď som to čítal v biblii (a možno nie a toto sú len pocity hneď po dočítaní :D).

Waltari is a master of historical fiction. Everything I've read by him was worth the time spent. With this epistolary novel, he tackles the greatest story ever told--Jesus's crucifixion, resurrection, and the next 40 days--through the eyes of a Roman citizen. It's a thoughtful, intelligent, and insightful book.
I only have two somewhat negative comments. First, the book was published in 1959. It's pace and language reflect that. Second, the narrator's storyline loses momentum in the last quarter of the novel.

Kirja on helppolukuinen ja mukaansatempaava sekä pääsääntöisesti mielenkiintoinen ja viihdyttävä, toisinaan jopa ajatuksia herättävä. Päähenkilönä toimii roomalainen Markus Mezentius Manilianus, jonka seikkailuja Uuden testamentin ajan Jerusalemissa ja Galileassa pääsemme seuraamaan. Tarinan alussa Markus sattuu paikalle roomalaisten ristiinnaulitessa Jeesusta, josta alkaa seikkailut, joita voisi parhaiten kuvata Raamatun poistettuina kohtauksina.

Básicamente es La Biblia 2. A lo mejor para una persona practicante de otra religión a la católica este libro pueda ofrecerle una interesante perspectiva de qué ocurrió con Jesús y los eventos posteriores a su muerte.
El libro está muy bien escrito, pero se me hace repetitivo y, bajo mi punto de vista ateo, peca de demasiado pío.

Kaunis kuvaus totuuden etsinnästä ja tapahtumista, jotka lopulta johtivat kristinuskon syntyyn. Kertomuksen perusrunko lienee suurimmalle osalle tuttu, mutta näkökulmana on roomalainen oppinut, joka pohtii Jumalan Valtakunnan salaisuutta: kuka ja minkälainen kuningas on tuo juutalainen opettaja, jonka ristin juurelle Markus Manilianus sattumalta joutuu lähdettyään Jerusalemiin muinaisten israelilaisten messiasennustusten perässä?

Este prima carte căreia vreau să îi scriu un review fără să o fi citit și nici măcar nu am 100 de pagini. Dacă se va întâmpla să nu-mi placă finalul, voi reedita această mică recenzie. Faza este că personajul-narator Marcus, cetățean roman, ajunge la Ierusalim chiar în ziua în care fusese răstignit Iisus Hristos. Astfel că ne așteaptă o carte emoționantă care ne relatează într-un mod foarte accesibil ceea ce s-a întâmplat atunci. Suntem martorii evenimentelor care au schimbat de atunci întreaga existență a omenirii. Îl vedem pe Iisus din Nazaret de aproape, vedem cum reacționează Pilat din Pont la aflarea adevărului. Deocamdată e genul de carte pe care o întâlnesc destul de rar, comparabilă cu ,,Shogun", ,,Преступление и наказание" sau ,,Il nome de la rosa".
Într-adevăr, după terminarea lecturii, am constatat că este o carte cu final deschis.

Even though I like many books, this book had engraved in my mind. I appreciate Waltari's art of character choosing and describing. Reader meets a lot of characters in the book. Some are trying to "wash their hands" by putting the blame on others, some are turning from very goodful to people full of disdain... Pretty much accurate to human society.
But mainly it is about will and craving for finding something despite obstacles. About deep believe. This is what warms my heart every time this book comes to my mind.

Krasne prerozpravany pribeh o ukrizovani Krista a prvych krocikoch Jezisovych ucenikov. Hlavna postava je Riman, ktory vchadza do Jeruzalema presne v moment, kedy krizuju Jezisa. Kniha vo mne dokazala vizualizovat, asi ako to mohlo vyzerat v prve dni po ukrizovani, asi ako mohli rozpravat, vyzerat a fungovat ucenici, ake postavenie tam mali zeny, Marie a celkovo Jezisovi suputnici. Za mna super kniha, pomohlo mi to vnimat evanjelia a postavy v nich, v trochu inom svetle a o kusok viac realnejsie.

A Roman travels to Jerusalem and arrives just as Jesus is dying on the cross. Waltari does a great job illustrating what must have been a confusing time as even the apostles don't know what's going on or what to do. Seeing this from a Roman's point of view is especially interesting since he is of the ruling empire and can't imagine this non-physical kingdom or of loving a god (fearing, yes, but love?).

Ajatuksia herättävän kaunis satu jo aiemmin olemassaolevasta Jeesus-sadusta. Waltarin maailmaan uppoaa jotenkin kokonaisvaltaisesti, ja onkin varsin uskomatonta miten tällaisiin teoksiin voikin saada niin paljon aitoudentunnetta, vaikka tarina sijoittuu 2000 vuoden taakse. Kaunis kirja täynnä viehättäviä ajatuksia, teki hyvää lukea tämä.
