Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook Completely

Rate this book
When "Hypoglycemia" was originally published by Pinnacle in 1980, it offered a revolutionary new approach to treating hypoglycemia, a blood sugar disorder with symptoms including fatigue, depression, insomnia, and chronic head or body aches. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can lead to an increased risk of ulcers, asthma, allergies -- even cancer and heart attack. Jeraldine Saunders, who developed this program to treat her own hypoglycemia, helped readers find the connection between what they ate and what they felt -- physically and emotionally. In 1996, the book was revised and expanded to include the Vim and Vigor Diet -- which not only regulates blood sugar, but promotes weight loss -- as well as 120 recipes, a guide to essential foods, and inspiring personal stories. Now, for this new Kensington Trade Paperback, "Hypoglycemia" has been completely updated again, incorporating the most recent findings regarding the disorder, information on the current medical treatments, and the latest recommendations concerning diet and supplementation. This revised and updated edition includes information provided by two experts in the field: Mark Drucker, M.D. and William Randall Kellas Ph.D., co-founders of The Center for Advanced Medicine in Encinitas California; and co-hosts of the syndicated southern California radio talk show, "Health Talk -- A Second Opinion."

Clear, concise, and reassuring, "Hypoglycemia" has helped millions of readers. The new edition promises to transform the lives of millions more.

Like many health-related works, the basic premise of this book is to reduce or eliminate sugars (including the kind found naturally in fruits), refined carbohydrates (white flour) and processed foods from the diet. This is especially important if one has the blood sugar disorder hypoglycemia, the symptoms of which can be related to (and even confused with) several chronic and debilitating illnesses, including alcoholism.

I'm most looking forward to trying out the recipes shared in the last section of the book.

While this book does include a lot of information about and relating to Hypoglycemia, I believe the title may be off-putting to those readers without diagnosed hypoglycemia (like myself). It could've easily been titled simply "The Classic Healthcare Handbook" with the content divided into parts addressing: 1) Hypoglycemia/The Disease Doctors Won't Treat and 2) Improving Quality of Life for Everyone.

There's so much information given that it reads much like a textbook, so it was difficult for me to push through to find that information relevant to my circumstances. Perhaps because it's a third edition, updated and revised and added to by multiple authors, much of the material seemed redundant. It's difficult to discern between opinion and research, because there are no footnotes to specific bibliography (although there is a section of recommended reading at the very end).

This book helped me understand nutrition like I never had before. I've been dealing with hypoglycemia induced by adrenal fatigue for a long time now and, after reading this book, I was empowered to take back my life and start regaining my health. I have gone from having hypoglycemia related problems every single day to rarely even remembering that I have blood sugar problems they are so few and far between. Thanks to this book as well as a book on adrenal fatigue I am healthy and will avoid full-blown diabetic problems in the future!

This is a great book for anyone suffering with hypoglycemia. This was a great guide for me after my diagnosis. The dietary guidelines she gives are a little different, like she tells you to only eat fertile eggs (sorry no), but it is packed with helpful information about this little known condition. Obviously this won't be read by a lot of people but for anyone out there who has this condition or thinks they might I highly recommend this book.

I found the info pretty outdated and not super useful (the diet they suggest is not realistic in my opinion). Some tidbits were helpful and it was nice to read a few of the case studies.

Loved this one. This not only details the disease, but the psychology behind the general refusal of acknowledgement that this is an actual medical condition.
