Luke Murphy
's debut fiction kept me off-balance most of the way through the book. I was surprised with the beginning and equally surprised by the ending. This high-powered, fast-paced murder mystery is placed in the city that doesn't sleep, Las Vegas. Plenty of suspense and few clues which tend to lead nowhere. Which suspect can be trusted, is there a rogue politician or cop in the mix that might be suspected of complicity? This is the theme that will keep the police hog-tied as corruption rears its oversized head. It quickly becomes a series of murders that will keep the reader(s) on their toes. Cut to the bare bones, the mystery of the crime seems to be easy to solve, but is it?
From the title it is obvious that the story revolves around gambling and casinos. Too many casinos, it would appear. One lone cop in charge of this case, Detective Dale Dayton, believes in the innocence of the most probable suspect, Calvin Watters. At the same time, his sergeant continues to draw a few lines he can't cross. Dayton does not appear to have a winning hand, not even a full deck. About this time the reader will question who is actually on the right track, because the murderer hasn't stopped at one death and time is running out.
There are several twists and turns in the story. Just when you think you've got it right, you're thrown another curve. The characters are so well-drawn that the reader will easily be double-guessing who did what, when and where. How many have been set up to take the fall? Who is pulling the strings that tie the hands of the homicide division? Are these really "perfect" murders? An exceptional first novel, gritty storyline to sink your teeth in, wonderful characters to root for or against. Excellent first book in what hints at the possibility of future adventures with these unlikely characters. I certainly hope so, this could be a fascinating series! Kudos to Luke Murphy, great job!

I enjoyed Dead Man's Hand very much. The characters were well developed and I found myself wanting them to succeed. I liked the story. It was fast paced and entertaining. The story was believable. I hope that another work with these characters is in author's future plans.

Casino control, murder, greed, and an off the wall hit man come together in author Luke Murphy's first Calvin Watters series book, "Dead Man's Hand". Watters is a former high profile college football phenom forced to change careers and lifestyles working as a collector for a second rate gangster named Donald Pitt. Calvin is the most feared collector in Vegas as his massive size and strength easily overpower most debtors. Ace Sanders a casino owner with dubious intentions wants to buy out Doug Grant who is the owner of the "Greek". A multi-millionaire, Grant has no desires to sell out to Sanders. Grant's plan is to work a couple more years and retire with the business sliding into son Shawn's hands. Doug's second wife Linda (Golddigger) is sleeping with Ace as they conspire to take casino away from Grant. Unfortunately for Calvin he wanders into the middle of Ace's plot to steal the Greek. Things will go from bad to worse when unsuspecting Calvin is tasked by Pitt to collect a debt from Doug. The wrinkle is that Calvin must collect the debt while in disguise when he goes to casino. Calvin complies since his deal with Pitt will enrich himself enough to leave town with girlfriend Rachel comfortably forever. However Calvin finds no Doug at casino and the police are now after him for the murder of Grant. It seems the more Ace and Linda conspire the bodies begin to fall. Calvin meanwhile must hide out and hole up with Rachel under tremendous pressure to be arrested by police. Calvin must call in some old favors to keep police at bay as he digs into murders set up by Ace. Added to the mix is the hit man hired by Ace to finish this transaction permanently. Dexter Baxter is a former military operative who bats 1.000 leaving various police agencies baffled by his hits. The mercurial Baxter is a real strange one who leaves bodies in his wake as well. LVPD detective Dale Dayton along with partner Jimmy Mason are on Calvin's tail although they realize Watters is not the suspect they need to be chasing. Dayton and Mason will then have some intense pressure by the brass and the mayor to arrest number one suspect Calvin Watters. Along with strict orders to stay away from Ace and his casinos the pair of detectives must work entirely under the radar within their investigation. In a somewhat quick paced plot, "Dead Man's Hand", does seem to build momentum from it's opening through it's body. I thought the ending was too forced and a bit too over the top. At just over 230 pages this tale was pretty much another bang-bang keep dropping bodies thriller. Overall yes I liked it. The characters were pretty well defined for the most part. Not sure how long this thriller has been out there because throughout I kept thinking I'd read it before. This is why the really odd twist at the conclusion seemed expected. As series go I admit I'm not sure how many books comprise series nor what book two is titled. As I see it three stars out of a possible five stars for author Luke Murphy's, "Dead Man's Hand". Yes some character in book will get Wild Bill Hickok's dead man's hand, (Aces & 8's !). Check it out.

Enjoyed reading.
Liked the Calvin Watters character, he got injured to save his team and lots his chance to become NFL player. Got framed for murders. Detective Dayton is on the right track. Twist at the ending was shocking, didn't expect that. Can't wait to read more books written by this author.

Make sure you have time!
Make sure you have time to read this book in one sitting. You will not be able to put it down. Exciting, twist turning, and thoroughly engrossing with characters that jump off the page. Can't wait to start the next Calvin Watter's mystery.

Quick crime read. I enjoyed the story line and the main characters, but the writing didn't draw me in. It was quite straight forward, without nuance or humor.

Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that will amaze for its clarity, directness and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, Dead Man's Hand (A Calvin Watters Mystery Book 1), is such a book.
Author Luke Murphy weaves an intense tale of mystery and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader's attention from the beginning. The author paints an 'ultra-high-stakes story of deceit, treachery and vengeance in a very vivid and convincing way.

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a compelling and gripping journey.
It’s one of those books that comes along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the mystery, thriller and suspense genre will love having a nibble on this one!
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Luke Murphy in the future. I would recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. Five stars from me.

I really enjoyed the second book, so much so that I had to listen to the first book as well. Glad I did I really enjoyed this book and it explained so much about the second book that I might have to re listen to it to appreciate more. Even though I knew what the out come was and who the mastermind was it was still very enjoyable, mainly because so much was going on. Despite the main charter being a leg breaker there is no graphic descriptions of violence, just a few deaths. The story is told by a number of the characters, to give there perspective of the situation, which works well for the story and helps you follow along nicely, especially as there is a lot of characters. The cast of characters was interesting and the author didn't spend hours describing there home life or history but just enough to make them human and interesting. I hope there is a book three in the works because I will be keeping an eye out for it.
When a big casino boss is murdered it looks like an open and shut case, Calvin Watters a leg break for a loan shark is the obvious suspect but for two Las Vegas detectives it is to obvious. As the pair goes against orders and investigate the prime suspect go on the run leaving them with more questions than answers. Is Calvin being set up? Is there a hitman in town and who has the money or neve to hire one? and who had the real motive to kill the boss? As bodies start dropping before they can get the answers it is a race against time to bring it all to a happy conclusion.
I liked the narrator and thought he did a good job with the voices. I like it when an author sticks with the same narrator as it lend a sense of continuity to a story.

I was immediately drawn to lead character, Calvin Watters. We discover that he was injured trying to save his team and lost his chance to become an NFL football player. In the course of his life, he was framed for murders. We are introduced to Detective Dayton. Detective Dayton is a man on a mission, he's looking for the truth and it shows that he's on the right track. I LOVED the twist at the ending, I have to admit I definitely wasn't expecting that. I enjoyed reading this book. Calvin Watters is a very likable character- after you get to know him. He scared me, which was part of his job as a collector. (Remind me never to owe anyone gambling bets) Murphy spares no character pain, whether it's physical or emotional, and there were a few times I was really caught off guard. I like police procedural, mystery, romance, action, etc. I don't get caught up on minute details as some other reviewers have, because I think the story flowed well, and some details wouldn't have made a difference to me anyway.
There was one aspect (and I don't like spoilers) but there's a connection between Watters and the detective that I thought may have been a little 'easy'; at first I thought 'that would never happen',but who am I to judge? It very well COULD work that way in real life in Vegas, and it worked very well for this story. I certainly liked this book enough to read the second one (and hope there are more to follow that one too).
I found myself making excuses to 'go read' so I could find out what Calvin Watters was getting himself into next, who the next target was, and if justice would prevail.
Bottom line: Luke Murphy crafts a well written story that was exciting to read.

This is a murder mystery full of intrigue and twists, the characters as important to the story as the plot itself. And they are not straight black and white, but definitely flawed. Well written, almost plausible, this is a great read from page one. And the narration by Connor Goff is also well performed, making the reading experience even more satisfying.

I met Luke Murphy twice now and have signed copies of all of his books (renfrew public library, thanks!). I enjoyed this book. The plot reminded me of a detective show. Fast-paced, thrilling. A few of the side characters could have been fleshed out more (ie Rachel, I felt i didn't really know who she was). Also, at one point he spells Dale's sons name Sammy but then in the letter from his wife, and a few other spots around the same point of the book, it is written as Sammie, so I was confused by that, but that's just a minor detail. Even though I knew who the killer was early on, this book had enough intrigue and i did NOT expect the reveal at the end of who else was involved, so that was well-done. Looking forward to reading book two!

I was gifted a signed copy of "Dead Man's Hand" this past Christmas and it just so happened to fill the "local author" category on my 2018 reading challenge. At first I found the book a bit confusing, as the reader is introduced to a bunch of different characters right off the bat and I had a hard time keeping track, but I got used to the switch back and forth between perspectives. The narrative is believable, and it kept me guessing throughout. While there are some definite flaws to this work, it is the author's first work and those can be forgiven given how easy it was to get into and want to find out more. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

This is a great debut novel introducing some very compelling characters and a promising new series. The story is seriously suspenseful and complete. No cliffhanger, although it's set up for another book in the series.
Conner Goff is an excellent choice to narrate this audiobook, and hopefully the series. I caught a couple of "retakes" that should have been edited out, but both the production and performance are quite satisfactory.

First in a series by Quebec author and former professional hockey player Luke Murphy. It is a Las Vegas police detective on the tail of a murderer story, with many of the characters you'd expect: the main (white) detective with the falling apart marriage and the black partner, the older casino owner married to his second wife who is a sleazy gold digger, the equally sleazy rival and owner of other casinos and the intimidating security guard and "collector." This reads something like a Harry Bosch novel although not as complicated.

Just finished this authors very first book published. Really really liked it about halfway through I couldn't put it down until I was done and then immediately picked up his next novel! I can't wait to see what more this author puts out. Truly loved the Calvin Watters character and hope to see more of him in the future. Just when you think you have it all figured out the author sends out that twist you never saw coming. Fast easy read! Highly recommend.

I've read other books by Luke Murphy and loved them. This book too was great. Captured my interest from the start in a sadistic sort of way. Greed leads to multiple murders and an innocent man with a not so wonderful past must convince the lead detective of his innocence, keep his girlfriend safe, and figure put who actually did the killing all while being pursued by a professional hitman trying to keep him quiet. I couldn't put this book down.

enough to read the next one. But what happened was I really enjoyed the second book in this series. I am now invested in the characters AND WANT MORE.
So I moved to his other books And I got hooked by Charlene in Kiss and Tell and Rock a bye baby even faster. I am a big fan of Lawrence Sanders, Robert B Parker, and Lawrence Block. I belive Luke Murphy could be on his way to join these great writers for this generation of readers. I am 64 years young.

Not sure what all the great reviews are about because they're very misleading with regard to the story I read. I found the writing sophomoric, the characters lacking emotion, situations not believable, and no adherence to accepted police procedures. It was a struggle to finish. Thank goodness it wasn't any longer.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It was exciting, thrilling, heart stopping, intriguing and just plain fun to read. I loved the charterers, both good and bad. I loved that I never saw the twists coming. It was just a great read all around. And then to find out this was Mr. Murphy's 1st novel blew me away!

The first book I have read from this Author and it doesn't disappoint.. It has a good story with believable characters, that leaves you wanting more.. It gives you a glimpse into the seedy side of Las Vegas.. I would definitely recommend if you like a good page turning crime/thriller to read.. A very talented Author..

Suspenseful and intriguing. Main character grabs you from first chapter and something about him makes you want to like him. Story had me hooked and the ending gave me a wow. First book I've read by this author but will definitely be looking for more.

Great twist at the end
Dale Dayton and Calvin Watters both wanted one thing in life, to start over with the women they love. Funny thing is, the same thing stood in their way. Their jobs. For Dayton, he's a cop. For Watters he's a collector for someone you would be better off not knowing.
Calvin wants out out the business. His boss agreed after one more job. Famous last words. That's when Calvin's life sound out of control into murder after murder. Starting with the murder of Doug Sanders owner of The Greek. The man who was his last job to collect from. After that bodies start to fall with Calvin looking good for all of them.
But is he? That is what Dayton and his partner Jimmie have to find out before anyone else dies. With pressure to solve the case strong but being blocked by higher ups not to approach some suspects the case is unusually difficult to solve. That has a good twist at the end.
Luke Murphy has written a fun, exciting mystery that will leave you wanting to read his next book.

But is he? That is what Dayton and his partner Jimmie have to find out before anyone else dies. With pressure to solve the case strong but being blocked by higher ups not to approach some suspects the case is unusually difficult to solve. That has a good twist at the end.

Really enjoyed this one. I’ve been on a thriller/mystery kick and am usually pretty good at guessing the ending. Was surprised at the end of this one though, which was nice. The pace was good and the characters were well fleshed out. Excited to read the next book in the series

I liked the book. Thought the characters were well developed and the storyline interesting, but I guessed the mastermind rather early. Would like to see Watters be successful in a future book.

The start was a bit protracted but once the plot really started, I couldn't stop reading. A well-written debut!
