Stop the Thyroid Madness II: How Thyroid Experts Are Challenging Ineffective Treatments and Improving the Lives of Patients by Andrew Heyman James Yang

Rate this book
The dawn of the 21st century brought with it one of the most profound and wide-reaching patient activist movements in history: Stop the Thyroid Madness (STTM). Created by the dynamic Janie A. Bowthorpe M.Ed, the patient-to-patient STTM revolution birthed life-changing hypothyroid treatment knowledge and protocols to counter decades of treatment mismanagement due to the use of inferior medications, the wrong lab work, and a poor understanding of symptoms. Now, as Editor, Ms. Bowthorpe brings the reader this acclaimed and brilliant second book, Stop the Thyroid Madness II, authored by over a dozen insightful medical professionals. Each practitioner brings years of excellence and insight into their chapters, not only complimenting what informed thyroid patients have learned, but offering deeper wisdom and knowledge. You'll read about the functional and holistic approach to thyroid disease, how stress affects the thyroid patient, the superior treatment of natural desiccated thyroid, why the TSH lab test is inadequate, what "normal" really doesn't mean when it comes to lab work, the importance of nutrition in regaining health and well-being, all about the autoimmune Hashimoto's version of hypothyroidism, why doctors are the way they are and how to relate to them, gluten and nutritional issues, thyroid toxicity and how to counter those toxins, the Reverse T3 problem, how MTHFR and methylation blockages can affect thyroid patients, and an understanding of why so many thyroid patients end up with low cortisol, aka hypocortisolism.

Interesting collection or articles by clinicians about the complexity of diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. Quality of the writing is variable across the chapters. Some of the chapters are excellent. Each chapter is informative in its own way, and most are well referenced. I found this a great introduction to the subject of hypothyroidism but several of the authors seem to have an ax to grind (against conventional practitioners or the pharmaceutical companies or both) so I am left with a concern of bias weighted in the opposite direction rather than an objective treatment of the subject.

If you think you have low thyroid and doctors say no .. if you can’t seem to lose weight,if you have bouts of anxiety, trouble sleepy, foggy brain, stomach upset- read this book.

I finally understand why my doctor (leans wholistic) had me take the tests he did. Now I know why I shouldn’t have gluten, with dairy a close second. I know why my arthritis is so much better and I am happier.

Easy to read segments by various specialists - all MD’s.

This is okay. It's not really for the layperson. I got completely overwhelmed.

Do not recommend this book or author. She is not a medical Dr nor does she have a medical degree. Her Facebook page is very negative. She claims not to tolerate negativity but she gets snippy when you ask a question and only answers if you agree to pay her money for a phone consult. Her page bans anyone that sells stuff when she in turn is just trying to sell her book. Her posters on the page are also rude if you ask a question. She is not helpful and it's not clear her "advice" is correct. I have been to doctors, nurse practitioners, and functional medical professionals and not one agree with her teachings. It's frustrating when she claims to help people but is rude and unprofessional when you ask her a question. It's obvious she's only wanting book sales.

This book is written each chapter by a different doctor and their treatment protocols for thyroid issues. They discuss the importance of proper testing with the correct testing that most conventional mds don't do. The variety of symptoms are discussed and other problems associated with nutrient deficiencies.

This is a collation of contributions by different medical and functional doctors about thyroid problems and what can be done about them. The lay reader will appreciate the story-based explanation of what can be complex biochemical processes.
