Very interesting book on the history of migration from Norway to America which began in the 19th century and the effects of this migration on both countries.
A good concise history of why Norwegians emmigrated. Read the Foreward.(13)Current Norwegian culture, and the driving historical norms that are still present today in 3rd-4th generation American-Norwegians.
If you have ancestors from Norway and wonder why they came to the States, this book will give you some insights. Were their efforts and ideals being squashed by their political system, or were they intrigued by the American adventure? While they may not be solid answers, it does give possibilities to the mass immigration of the 1800’s and beyond. Statistics from both countries’ governments, letters to family (which could be exaggerated), news articles, etc. have been considered. It may be a little textbook-ish for some, but I found it to be an easy and interesting read.
Very disappointed in this book. Had hoped and expected more information on actual ship names and ports from which they left, types of Norwegian census data contained in Norway census reports, values, traditions, more about life in cities to which the emigrated, etc.
A concise, informative account of the Norwegian migration to America in the 19th century. Read in connection with my recent trip to Norway to visit Eidfjord, the village of my ancestors. I liked this book.
Great overview of the effect on both sides of the Atlantic during the "migration years" in Norway--- approximately 1825-1914. Very insightful, well-documented, full foot notes and bibliography.
