I am going to be truthful, I selected ‘The Sisters’ purely due to its great jacket and a tagline ‘One Lied One Died’ that I thought was really good in its simplicity and I believed promised thrills and perhaps, I hoped, psychological suspense. It delivered neither.

The major problem I have with The Sisters is that it reads like a creative writing task, and one that was rushed to meet a deadline. To make matters worse, for the first few chapters I was convinced I’d been reading a teenage novel and only a sporadic use of the F word reassured me that it had not been the case (although these days you can’t tell). The juvenile voices of the protagonists and the nature of the intertwined relations of all the housemates of Beatrice’s house turned, what should have been ‘tension’ into a twisted sixth form drama: girl inadvertently causes the death of her twin- girl meets another twin and attempts to rebuild the bond she had lost- girl moves in with the twins- girl obsesses first with the female twin then also the male twin- another flatmate is in love with the female twin- the female twin obsesses with her male twin… you get the drift.

As for the plot, mystery-wise it’s not the worst one I’d ever read in a debut but to call it a thriller would be an exaggeration. Let’s put it this way- It did not keep me on my toes but admittedly I just did not care enough to try and keep up.

Would I recommend the book to anyone? Sure, if you’re after an easy, inoffensive, London/Bath-based, brand name-dropping read- go ahead. Just don’t expect to have your mind blown.

Gosh I read this fast – seriously once started there is no stopping so there’s a slight warning for you. Don’t try and fit “just a couple of chapters” in before you have to go somewhere.

The Sisters is a tense and very gripping psychological thriller, totally twisted in the best way possible – in this case rather than one protagonist you just can’t work out and who will drive you mad, you have two.

Abi has lost her twin and is a bit lost herself. Seeing Lucy everywhere she goes, she suffers a breakdown – we meet her later as she is trying to build a new life away from all the horror of her past – then she meets Bea. Free spirit Bea reminds Abi hauntingly of Lucy and is also a twin, they are drawn together. But everybody is hiding something and when Abi moves in with Bea, her brother, and their artistic set things start to get slightly odd.

This flowed from the page like the fastest running river you can imagine, as we jump between Abi and Bea and their thoughts and perceptions – but who is lying, who is truthful, is one of them mad, perhaps even both or is something else entirely going on? Who knows ( well me now obviously) but on the journey I had no clue – I just knew that I was caught up in the lives of these two girls, sympathetic and trusting first one then the other before bouncing back to “I have no clue” and clutching my head.

The narrative style is perfect for this type of tale – creeping up on you, bright sunshine and seemingly happy people but underneath it all a distinctly menacing feel – Claire Douglas builds the tension absolutely superbly, changing the game with almost every other chapter and keeping you firmly off kilter.

Add to that some extraordinarily fascinating characters, a really clever and intelligent plot, some perfect scene setting and a distinct tendency to sneak things up on you, this was a really terrific read. There are quite a few novels around this year that focus on siblings and family dynamic, this is one of the best I’ve read for sheer depth of perception and I really do highly recommend it.

Happy Reading Folks!

When I saw this was sold as 'for fans of The Girl on the Train' on the cover, I was dubious. Numerous thrillers have lured me in with similarly dressed promotions, only for me to discover that either the statement is completely false, or the book is nothing more than a sub-par imitation. Imagine my surprise, when this book turns out to be deserving of its accolade!

The sisters is a book revolving around Abi, the one remaining twin who survived after a tragic accident. Almost two years later and she still has not got over her survivor's guilt, and blames herself every day for her sister's demise. Unable to continue with her former life, she moves to Devon to be closer to her distraught parents. But the face of her sister continues to haunt her.

A chance meeting with a girl who bears a startling similarity to the lost twin sees Abi's life take an alarming turn in another direction. Is she moving on from her tragic past, or is this an unforeseen nexus, taking her closer to the past catastrophe that haunts her?

In every page of this book lies a hidden message or meaning, and I spent an entire sleepless night marathoning this, in its entirety, so compelled was I to discover the mysteries this book contained. For there isn't just one enigma to explore, but several, and each is linked to the other in an overlapping web of intrigue and lies. The unguessable connections and conclusion makes this worthy of its front-cover connection to one of the most popular psychological thrillers of the modern day.

Creepy.....snicker fiddle feathers!!!!!!!

Its not like this book is first rate literature--or educational--nor would I say the prose is exquisite ...however, it 'is' an adrenaline rush! A fast read -one sitting- race to the finish line....with unstable, inscrutable characters.

Dead or alive...( doesn't seem to make any difference)....because in THIS novel,
it's DOUBLE YOU FUN, DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE with TWO sets of TWINS!

Highly recommended for adrenaline addicts, caffeine addicts, chaos addicts, codependency addicts, relationship addicts, ....and general psychological thriller addicts! And those interested in a novel that pulls you in and won't let you go.

Some books are best enjoyed knowing nothing about the story. This is THAT book. When the book ends...your mind doesn't!!!!!

Thank You HarperCollins Publishing, and Claire Douglas ( and my friend Mary who told me this was a page turning novel: she is right)

Sooooo, here is my confession: I judge books by their covers. I picked up The Sisters by Claire Douglas based on the cover and tag line. It was set in Britain so I was eagerly awaiting to read this book in one shot. Two days later...

RATING: 2 STARS
2015 (UK) 2016 (North America); Harper Collins

After the loss of her twin sister, Abi has moved to Bath to be closer to her parents. One day she meets Bea, who looks a lot like her sister Lucy and her. Bea invites her to a art opening at her home and they quickly become friends. At this art opening Abi meets Bea's twin brother, Ben. When one artist moves out of Bea and Ben's family home, Bea invites Abi to move in rent free. Abi soon finds herself falling for Ben which only begins to irk Bea. Soon Abi's letters from Lucy go missing, and she begins to get threatening messages. When Abi goes to Ben he sides with his sister and Abi doesn't know who to turn to and if she can get out alive.

If I see one more book with the review/tagline of "for fans of Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train" I am purposely going to not read it. So there. I had high hopes for this book. The synopsis sounded great and it being a British psychological thriller I couldn't wait till this book came up on my list. Sadly, this book did not live up to the hype. (It was chosen as a winner for Marie Claire fiction contest and Good Housekeeping also recommended it).

1. I didn't like the characters and so I had no one to root for and kind of felt like they deserve anything awful that happens (I know, that is mean - but they did say it was like Gone Girl so that was at least true!)

2. I am not sure why Abi didn't just leave...period. There was no incentive in my opinion to keep her there.

3. Where was the suspense??? And, the psychological thriller part??? The constant is she crazy or not was pretty obvious. It was easy to figure out what happened to Lucy...and the later "twists".

4. At times it felt like there was no editing involved. There were errors and at time rambling descriptions.

I gave this book a star because it is an easy read and I did finish it. I decided to give it another star because I felt bad that this book didn't even grab me at any point. I will not be reading any further books by this author.

“Grippingly claustrophobic....” not my words, but those of someone on the staff of Marie Claire. Hmmm, really.

Where do I begin? With Abi, the main character? She is the surviving twin, her sister Lucy having died some eighteen months previously. Abi, riddled with guilt, relocates to Bath to begin afresh. A chance encounter with Bea, who looks strikingly similar to Lucy, sparks a friendship not only with Bea but – would you believe it – her twin brother Ben. He of the long legs, the lanky but substantial body, hazel eyes, freckles and tousled hair – just your average, every day, ordinary looking guy. Surely Abi, poor lonely, grieving, needy Abi, is not going to fall for Ben – oops, too late, within seconds of meeting him she's already blushing, feeling shockwaves and practically drooling. Well – I didn't see that one coming.

Now Bea is somewhat possessive of her brother and does her very best to disentangle Abi and Ben. There is obviously a dark secret Bea and Ben are keeping – something they've done in the past and have run away from. This is hinted at frequently between them, but Abi is kept in the dark. Have you guessed how old these twins are yet? Sixteen? Eighteen? Nope, not even close – they're thirtytwo! Was it the author's intention to make them behave like juveniles, or is it her writing? I suspect the latter as the whole book smacks of teenage writing, aimed at teenagers. The fact that Abi and Lucy were twins and Bea and Ben are twins is rammed home so often, as are their physical characteristics such as the hazel eyes and ski-sloped noses, which are wrinkled with alarming regularity.

Is the author being paid to advertise certain products? Why else is it necessary to tell us that Bea wears Emma Bridgewater oven gloves when removing food from the Aga? She seems always to dress in tea-dresses, usually made or designed by someone called Alice Temperley – but Abi prefers Gap.

This is just so badly written, so contrived, so predictable. To sum up it's suitable for rainy afternoon or deckchair reading for those who don't want to tax their brains too much – or at all. This novel apparently won the Marie Claire Debut Novel Award; one wonders – well, I do anyway – what the others were like.

I had seen The Sisters around a lot and knew it was a book I wanted to get to though it took me a fair while. My reading mountain is alarmingly huge!!

Abi, our main character, is now living in Bath, after the death of her twin sister, Lucy. Dying in a car accident where Abi had been the driver, Abi is now racked with grief and guilt as she tries to come to terms with the tragedy. She meets Beatrice, a vivacious, charismatic young woman who looks uncannily like Lucy. Abi is immediately entranced with enigmatic Bea and can't believe her luck as the two become firm friends, moving into Bea's home and meeting Bea's twin brother, Ben.

Initially, all is well as the beautiful people live carefree and happy in one big house, hanging out and enjoying each others' company. Then things start to happen that starts Abi on a journey of unsettling behaviour and mistrust of others.

The book starts off well as we meet all the characters and fall into the world of all things 'beautiful'. After a while this does become tiresome as everyone in their world seems to be near on perfect. Yawn. The story wanes terribly throughout the middle as the same thing is repeated time and time again. The use of unnecessary descriptive language at times became slightly irritating. The book does pick up a lot in the last quarter which redeems it somewhat. But it was fairly easy to work out where the storyline was going and wrapped up fairly quickly; abruptly even. I would have liked more fleshing out of what happened to the characters at the end but on the whole it was enjoyable enough to hold my interest.

To sum up. It wasn't as good as I was expecting but not a bad read by any means. Would read more by Ms Douglas for sure.

I enjoyed this psychological thriller. The Sisters had an interesting mix of characters with various secrets and dark sides to them. This story kept me guessing throughout and eager to find out how it was going to end.

There were a couple of things that frustrated me, and felt a little unrealistic, but you never really know how you’re going to react in a situation until you’re living it yourself. I just kept getting frustrated that a character allowed themselves to stay within the house much longer than I believe I would. Also, when strange things began happening, making them feel crazy as things kept appearing and disappearing, would definitely be a time I’d start taking photos or screenshots as proof, even if only for my own sanity.

However, other than for that personal niggle this was an enjoyable read that kept my attention and I would recommend it to fans of psychological thrillers.

This book also made me discover that I’ve been mishearing the lyrics of a song for the best part of thirty years. Turns out it’s “Groove is in the heart”, not “Groove is in the hive”. Clearly, I was a honey bee in a previous life!

Could these characters be MORE unlikeable and shallow? Obviously not. This book tested my nerves and patience all day! And Abi dear, did you really need 300 pages to get the idea of leaving the house (where, btw, you live rent free) when suspecting that someone there is trying to harm you and drive you mad?!

Don't you just love a book that you read cover to cover in one sitting? This is exactly what I did with The Sisters, it swallowed up a whole Friday evening and I loved it! This is a really interesting psychological drama thriller that has some fascinating and surprising twists at the end. You might see it coming, you might now.

Abi is still grieving and feeling terrible about the death of her twin sister Lucy. Bea and Ben are twins and Bea bears a striking resemblance to Abi/Lucy and they are pulled together in a powerful intimate journey. With attraction all-around and some fascinating interpersonal interactions, this book really plays on the power of complex and damaged characters. Once Abi has met with the two Twins her life will never be the same again and that's putting it lightly.

This is a good "mess with your head" novel that has you wondering what is coming up next chapter by chapter, you can't just dip into this book, you need to devour it. I wanted to just keep turning pages to see what was coming up in the plot and was riveted by the unfolding bizarre drama that the book brings to the reader. This is highly entertaining and just what I needed to thrill this reader. I had this on my bookshelf for a while and was glad I picked it up at last.

This will appeal to any fans of psychological dramas and thrillers, especially those with damaged characters and a plot that has you trying to work out the twists you know are coming. A great read and 4 huge stars from me!

Loved this book, another fantastic gripping psychological thriller. From the first page I was hooked and I did not want to put it down, I became totally enthralled in Abi's world. The story is fast paced and you are not sure who is telling the truth and who is telling lies which keeps the suspense level high. I would highly recommend this book

Another Claire Douglas book that I've read, i did enjoy this book and I feel Claire is a good Author
I gave this 3 stars not the fact I didn't like it,it was because I've read a few of these thrillers before so 3 stars was satisfactory score

She meets a girl who looks like her sister, she is also a twin has a brother. She moves in with them
Then things start to happen with one twin blaming the other, she then falls in love with the brother and start a relationship, his twin sister is not happy with that, she wants her twin brother for herself, there is a strange relationship between the twins.

I gemelli nascondono qualcosa.

No, okay, I'm done.

Abi has moved to Bath to try & make a fresh start in life after the devastating death of her identical twin sister Lucy. She meets the very colourful Beatrice (who reminds her so much of Lucy) & her twin brother Ben and this is where things start to get really interesting.
This is a really good psychological thriller with lots of twists & turns that keep you wondering until the end – Who’s lying, Who’s telling the truth, Who exactly is manipulating who & can you trust any of them?? 4.5★

An effortlessly read thriller cum mystery cum drama from newly established author - and winner of a glossy magazines search to find the next big literary star - this is an enjoyable and darkly fascinating story of Abi who is recovering from the sudden death of her twin sister Lucy.

When Abi meets the beautiful, vivacious and outspoken Beatrice and soon after her twin brother Ben, she begins to think that they are what is missing from her life since Lucy's death. But shortly after moving into their huge London home, Beatrice begins to act strangely and Abi ponders if she has made a huge mistake. While fighting her own internal battles, Abi is soon thrust into Beatrice's and Ben's oddly fascinating world.

This book touches on mental health issues, which may serve as a trigger warning for some readers. But I felt the author did well to describe how Abi dealt with her sisters death, from the paranoia to the survivors guilt complex.

The writing leaves the reader to guess much of how the story unfolds; I felt this mystery element was suitable for the tone of the story. I certainly didn't see several aspects of the book coming. The ending is rather abrupt, as per some reviewers noting, but I felt this was perhaps a suggestion that there was more to come from Abi. I would certainly read a sequel.

For a new author, this was a worthwhile read. I anticipate her latest novel to be just as thrilling - I have already reserved my copy.

The first thing that struck me about The Sisters was how adeptly I was pulled into the story from the opening pages. You meet Abi who is reeling from the death of her beloved twin sister. As well as grief she is experiencing terrible guilt and she is needy and fragile.
Abi meets and becomes involved with another set of twins - the glamorous and privileged Beatrice and Ben who seem golden siblings with their five storey house in Bath complete with artworks and a brace of artist lodgers. Claire Douglas has concocted a heady cocktail with this trio of characters.
Abi is invited to move into the house by Beatrice and she finds the whole set up irresistible. This seems to be a house without any locks on the doors, where boundaries can be crossed too easily and friendship can turn to distrust and suspicion. The house is beautiful on the exterior but beneath the façade there boils a disturbing world of jealousy, obsessions, secret desires and betrayals.
For much of the book you see events from Abi's point of view but some chapters are in Beatrice's voice. This moving between points of view plants a lot of doubts in your mind about who is telling the truth and who is manipulating whom. At various twists and turns in the plot I found myself distrusting all the characters.
Claire Douglas is masterly at keeping you guessing until the end. Highly recommended.

Abi has moved to Bath to try and come to terms with the death of her twin sister Lucy. She is alone in a new city and grieving despite her attempts to try and make a fresh start. Very quickly, through what appears coincidence, she becomes friends with Bea, a vivacious character who bears a strong resemblance to her dead sister Lucy. Bea shares a luxurious 5 storey house with her twin brother Ben and Abi, flattered to be noticed by someone so glamorous as Bea, moves in with them, becoming part of their artistic, albeit offhand and transient, group of lodgers and friends.

But as her feelings for Ben deepen into something more than friendship, Bea appears to be jealous of Abi. And then odd things start to happen. All too late Abi realises that the friendships in the house can actually quickly become full of distrust, jealousy and suspicion. Suddenly Abi feels threatened, her precious things go missing and she is left cruel messages. Is it Bea? Or is it Abi? Both girls want to protect Ben from the other, but why? Who is telling the truth? Who can you trust?

This book is engaging, that is true. I kept listening, waiting for the promising twists, turns and then the end.. All strange characters, undeveloped shallow creatures. I can't say I agree with any of the favourable reviews... it's reminded me of a Bouquet of Barbed Wire. A complete let down.
