A autobiography of the author as young boy living in the small village of Ter Maaleh who worries about getting circumcised along with all of the other pressures of growing up in a totalitarian country. Presented in graphic novel format.
This part of the Sattouf's is explained in "the arab of the future" in a more interesting way although less thoroughly - which is ok since it is interesting when it is part of a bigger story, but maybe not in and of itself.

Early Sattouf autobio story that becomes refined in its retelling in ARAB OF THE FUTURE. Amusing use of exclamation language for humour and comic timing, though Sattouf would later show improvements in his graphic storytelling abilities.
Nice book to have for the Sattouf completists though ultimately it gets superseded by his later magnum opus.
A rant in the form of a book. The circumcision is bluntly compared to a death sentence. Yep, he dared! In fact I'm surprised that the anti-vaccination mouvement didn't think of that analogy, it would have made a great argument.
The drawings and dialogue weren't enough to express the protagonist's feelings so every other page needed endless addendum, side notes, foot notes and capital letters. Add to that a cliché and biased lesson in history and geopolitics. And since the story is about circumcision we get a good excuse to flog the word "Dick" everywhere.
Now why is this book displayed in the adult section of libraries instead of the juvenile one?
Simple drawings give way to deeper political, psychological, religious, socio-economical issues which lay at the heart of Syria. Surprisingly not much has changed since young Riad's horrifying circumcision story. Fun to read while it makes you ponder on some controversial issues going on in the Middle East without going into boring political controversy.
Loved the theme, funny, witty, Riad Sattouf has just released a movie here in France named 'Les beaux gosses' -not easy to translate I would say 'The good-looking kids' which I intend to see in the next coming days.
