This children's story is one of a series of books about the Moomins that blend magic, humour and adventure in the setting of the small, but ever-changing Moominvalley.
Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.
Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.
Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.
This was my first Moomin book, and now I think I need to read it every winter to myself, and then out loud to everyone I know. It's subtly deep, softly profound. Full of wonder, discovery, and truth. I wish I could be more like Little My, but I am so much more like Moomintroll. I cannot believe I never knew about these gems before!
Playing Library Bingo, I needed to re-read a book from my early childhood memories, so I of course chose a Moomin book. Moominland Midwinter is classic and wonderful, a perfect little read just before Christmas. It's warm and sweet and at times melancholy and thoughtful, it's an absolute gem of a children's book.
I don’t even know what to say. What a great book. It starts a bit melancholy but it’s about Moomintroll learning to be alone, learning to turn his fears into excitement and how to enjoy an unfamiliar time of year. It’s so good and had so many good quotes I had to stop and take pics of.
