I never really loved the drawings in this, or even the twee prose, but it was a mainstay for Jack and Lily’s bedtime stories for SO long. Always left it till last, too. This is the way too….

This is a classic repetitive children’s book, starting as a tired child is making his way to bed. However, as he walks to his house he keeps getting interrupted by the other animals who want to accompany him to stay cozy in bed.

This was the perfect book to use in my Books Before Bedtime program. The children loved all of the noisy animals the boy encounters as he is getting ready for bed. Adorable illustrations!

A cute little short story. This would be a good book for toddlers who are learning animal sounds. They can help "read" along. Helps with memory skills and the writing utilizes phrase repetition.

Remember Harriet's flair for bizarre humor? Now that she can read, she's found that she can pick out books that fit her sense of humor. A recent pick of hers was The Noisy Way to Bed by Ian Whybrow which she delighted in reading to me.

A young boy living on a farm decides it is time for bed and heads back to the farmhouse. Along the way he meets up with a number of farm animals who in their own "noisy way" make it known that they want to go to bed too.

So a long line of animals follow the boy home, a pig, a sheep, a horse and so forth. Each animal makes its own sound, something that is fun for children to mimic. As I was the one being read too, Harriet left the animal noises to me. Moo. Oink. Baa!

The watercolor illustrations are a nice mixture of realism and cartoon sketch, giving enough wiggle room to make the whole barn yard bedtime scene seem plausible. Parents and children can use this book to talk about how and where animals sleep.

Fans of the Woods' The Napping House will enjoy The Noisy Way to Bed.

A little boy has been playing outside all day, and is very tired. All he wants to do is go home and go to bed. On his walk home, he meets some noisy animals who follow him home. They oink, and neigh and quack all the way home. Finally, the boy reaches his bed and falls asleep with all of the noisy animals.
The artwork is mixed media, but predominantly done in watercolor. The soft, hazy colors of the scenery help give the reader the feel of bed time. The bright colors will appeal to children.
This book is perfect to read for a bedtime themed storytime. Each time the boy says that he is on his way to bed, he is interrupted by a noisy animal. Children will love seeing the picture of the noisy animal and making the animal noise along with the reader. This is a great participatory book that can help children identify animals and practice animal noises. Any bedtime craft would be suitable to accompany this book.

It's bedtime, but how can the little boy find his way? With the help of some very friendly farm animals is the answer. The art is very expressive and really brought the story to life for me. The use of an uncompleted rhyme gives a certain tension to the story, and with the animal noises encourages participation. With it's "journey" structure it would work really well for drawing, or otherwise creating, a map of the story, and the animals he meets are all those you would commonly find as toys in a nursery or reception class, so it also could work well for a sensory story.

This book was funny. I really liked it and i thought it would be a great book to read aloud to a class. Maybe as an end of the day story. It is cute and the children could engage in the story telling as well. I found it to be very interesting and cute and I myself was wondering if the little boy would ever make it to bed.

A total mashup of the popular bedtime and farm animal/animal sounds genres. A little boy is making his way to bed, but he keeps getting interrupted by very noisy animals!

Lots of watercolor backgrounds give the illustrations a dreamy, sunset look.

Great for reading before bed, or at a bedtime themed story time for toddlers.

while the writing can be a bit stilted, my toddler giggles out loud every time an animal interrupts the little boy's bedtime walk. this is our last bedtime book of the evening, every night (until the library wants it back!).

This was read at story time today. It was alright. The illustrations were pretty good and it had a predictable pattern, but it was a surprise what animal would be next. It could make a good bed time book.

This one could have been better although I did like it after I kinda made it my own. I used this one for both toddler and preschool storytime.

As a sleepy boy decides it is bedtime and sets out across the farm toward home, he meets several animals who, in their noisy way, express the same idea.

A great book about the different sounds that animals make all while a little boy tries to make it home for bed. Kids can imitate the sounds of the animals which makes this story a blast for kids.
