About the author

Ethel Lilian Voynich, née Boole was a novelist and musician, and a supporter of several revolutionary causes. Her father was the famous mathematician George Boole. Her mother was feminist philosopher Mary Everest, niece of George Everest and an author for the early-20th-century periodical Crank.In 1893 she married Wilfrid Michael Voynich, revolutionary, antiquarian and bibliophile, the eponym of the Voynich manuscript.

A friend of mine praised this book so much, that I couldn't wait to read it. But when I did it, I got that this book is overloved and overrated. The process of reading was not pleasant enough and the atmosphere in the chapters was unbelievably sad and stalemate and hopeless. It was not actually my book.

За два дня практически проглотила 450 страниц.
Для меня эта книга оказалась неожиданно актуальной из-за смерти Навального.
Разумеется, речь в ней идёт совсем не об этом. Но там описываются побудительные мотивы и психология человека, знающего что он обречён на смерть, но продолжающего свою деятельность несмотря на это.
Там почти нет подробностей и ужасов лагерей, это не Солженицын и не Шаламов, это английский взгляд со стороны на русских революционеров, но хорошее воображение сделало свое дело и мне этого вполне хватило. Не говоря о том, что всё это судя по всему не сильно изменилось со времён Сталина, включая издевательства чиновников над просителями и родственниками.
Кроме того, там есть интересные наблюдения за русскими людьми и иначе чем вырождающейся нацией их назвать сложно.
Роман слабее остальных, конечно, и типажи похожи на персонажей других книг, и оптимистичная концовка мало реальна. Тем не менее, с психологической точки зрения очень интересно.
Вообще, интересно читать писательницу ретроспективой, когда много знаешь о ее биографии.

Книжка дивна, як і головна героїня.

Її можна назвати "жорстокий роман" тому що кохання практично немає. Вона миготить спалахом спочатку і віддає відблиски ближче до кінця. Зате є місце депресії, душевним стражданням, хворобам та політичним чварам. Політичні ідеї розпирають книгу, вилазячи назовні мерзенними думками.

Знайомство з автором не назву дуже вдалим. Цю роботу не хочеться перечитувати і знову поринати у світ страху та жорсткого пофігізму Олівії. Історія не торкнулася жодної струни душі, залишаючись порожньою і виснаженою від витраченого часу. Хоча, була крапля жалю до батьків дівчини. Але цього не вистачило...

It made me plunge into the story, see and depict clear view. İ found it more about dedication, trust, believe and political fight. İt reflects life in Russia and parts of the revolutioners life whom the author knew personally.

Way too sentimental and mushy.
Her father loved her the most. Her friend put his life to risk because he loved her.
She went to her real lover (who eternally loved her, of cause) and got his best friend stalwart and a stout man in love with her.
Off course, hearts are broken, the lover does die and to her his death is love-everything-in-the-world.
How realistic! Yawn!
The only enjoyable part of the book for me was the descriptions of pre-revolution Russia.
