PLEASE SASSAFRAS contains spoilers for the HAYLE COVEN NOVELS. Please do not read before #7, FLESH AND BLOOD.
Banished
Power engulfed me, a strong hand stroking my fur as Ahbi's mind met mine. I wish you well, Sassafras, she sent. Do come to visit someday.
No time to respond, not while her magic lifted me, sent me forward, toward the gap in the veil, through it—
My new body fell, landed hard on cold, wet gravel, the light from the veil shining one more moment. It snapped shut behind me, leaving me alone in the cold dark.
When the demon boy Sassafras breaks Demonicon’s oldest law and strips the power of another, he is sentenced to death. Only his father’s pleading commutes Sass’s sentence to banishment. Forced into the body of a silver Persian, his power taken from him, he is dumped in the dark streets of Victorian London and left to die. Rescued by a young witch and integrated into her family, Sassafras finds purpose at last, guiding and loving the Hayle family, sharing his heart with the remarkable coven he claims as his own.
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
Five Fantabulous Amazing Stars, only because I can't give more than five stars. I ate Sassafras up, not that I haven't zipped right through all of the Hayle Coven novels but it seemed like time stood still just for me. I've always liked Sassy. But I will tell you right now, for the first few chapters of Sassafras I wanted to smack him around a little bit for being such a arrogant jerk, all the way down to the last moment before being thrown into the veil and he had to begin his new life, as a cat! Honestly, I am glad he was forced to lose his demon form and take that of a cat because I don't think I could stand to read any more of him like that. (No offense Patti!) I felt like I was feeling Sassy's emotions through the whole book. Maybe because I LOVE this series so much and after so many books, the characters feel like friends and family. I also look forward to the other character novels this year! How exciting!!! Patti Larsen NEVER ceases to amaze me and never lets her readers down. If you haven't started reading any of the Hayle Coven novels, grab a copy of Family Magic (book one), sit back, and enjoy the ride! Well done Patti, well done!
As Sassafras is one of my favorite characters in the Hayle universe, I was absolutely thrilled to receive his story for review. Banished from Demonicon, Sassafras lands in a cold, wet Victorian London as a silver Persian cat. Almost entirely stripped of magic and in order to survive he must learn about humans, dogs and all the other mishaps that can befall a cat. This is until Thaddea Hayle finds him and he needs to shift his focus from his own survival to that of the Hayle Coven.
This story touched me deeply and quite often moved me to tears. Sassafras, the demon boy from a highly dysfunctional family, had never known love and believed that, as a demon, he was incapable of the emotion. Only a short while living with the Hayle family teaches him the opposite. As generations of Hayles pass, Sassafras becomes more and more responsible for the wellbeing of the coven as well as individual members, specifically the women who are destined to take up leadership of the coven at some time in their life.
Throughout the years with the coven Sassafras has to play nurse maid to impossibly naughty, wilful witches, see premature babies die, watch his beloved witch friends grow old and pass away, and witness the insanity of several. Every time a well-loved witch friend dies, it means great loss and deep mourning for the demon cat who never grows old. When one particular witch almost completely destroys the coven, Sassafras is the one who brings her to justice. Although a witch with only a latent magical talent is a huge problem to many witches, this dear, loyal cat loves them as much as he does the rest of the family.
To say I enjoyed reading Sassafras is an understatement. I loved every moment of it! If I could give this book a seven star rating, I would do so in a heartbeat. With a liberal Kleenex warning, I declare this book a must-read! (Ellen Fritz)
This book was quite different from the rest of the series as it featured Sassafras the demon cat and gave us valuable insight into his past. I really enjoy reading about Syd so the departure from the main character left me a little disappointed though the history behind the Hayle Witches was an interesting tale. Instead of viewing Sass just as a snarky arrogant little know it all (which he is) it also showed his loyalty and depth of feeling for the witches that had offered him a place in their home and their hearts. This story ties in all the loose threads of why Ethpeal transferred her power to Sydlynn in the beginning and how the Hayle Coven came to be one of the strongest despite their enemies trying to destroy them. Strangely enough these stories remind me of my youth when I read lots of books about witches and warlocks, dragons and the like. There is no sex or bad language and the romance is pure and innocent so I would recommend these to a much younger audience. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and luckily for me the author writes so quickly that I don't have to wait a year till the next book is released.
I lost count of how many times this book brought me to tears after about the 5th time. I loved Sass before, but now I just adore him - arrogance and all, you can't help but love him after reading this. (Even if it does stroke his ego, I can't help but be honest).
I also loved all the insight into the Hayle lineage, all their ups and downs, joys and sorrows, successes and challenges. It really just gives the whole series that much more depth and draws you in so much more (as if I weren't already addicted enough! LOL) Really looking forward to see how the other character books help shape this families' story as well.
I believe you will enjoy the book regardless but, if you haven't already, you will love it that much more if you read the rest of the HCN (Hayle Coven Novels) series (at least 1-7) before you begin his story :)
I loved the Hayle coven series, masterfully written, easy to lose yourself in the series. This was a great insight to Sassafras's character. Spin-off stories (in my experience) have such a big chance of failure but this story ties in to the Hayle Coven series but can easily stand alone. Really recommend this book. It meant more to me reading AFTER the Hayle stories.
Sassafrass has always been my favorite character outside the heroine in the Hayle Coven novels. We've had small clues to his life off and on, but finally here's the whole story from his point of view.
