As most things do, this book came to me just when I needed it. I read it rather slowly, because it resonated on a deep level and I needed to digest it as I went and think about how it applied in my life and how I could incorporate these teachings into my life.
Call of the Soul presents a perspective on the ego I had not heard before - helping me to understand more about how and why the ego operates and how to work with the ego rather than fight it. That alone was worth reading the book! But there is so much more. My soul led me to Aila Accad and this book, and they inspire me to move forward trusting that when I heed the Call of the Soul, everything will fall into place.
Disclaimer: Aila Accad is my dear friend and author. I met her a writer's conference, she pitched me several ideas before she hit on this one and I had to have it. She wrote the proposal over the summer of 2012. Michael Pye of New Page Books made me an offer as soon as I sent it out to the editors. It all fell into place perfectly, this book was meant to be. Every step of the way was open and easy. Aila is an amazing woman on a magical journey.
Aila teaches that the quest for identity is first deeply pondered in adolescence. The "soul" of a teen or young adult bursting with creative desire attempts to break free from parental and societal "ego" structures that feel confining. If the answers to the questions are not clear or the soul's determination not strong enough, the young person resigns to conforming to established social norms and conditioned cultural and family expectations or rebels against them. The ego takes charge - "Go to college, get a good job, get married, have kids," and so on or "No way am I doing that". When this happens, the soul's quest to be free goes underground, often to reemerge in midlife. At midlife, the conflict between the long entrenched ego and the freedom starved soul often manifests as a "midlife crisis".
If you are seeking to further your journey of adventure, read this book. Aila will knock your socks off!
