CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

It was so good to finish this re-read of Angelic Layer via these omnibus editions from Dark Horse! From start to finish, this remains a highly underrated and very fun title, set in the same 'verse as Chobits, with a lovable cast of characters, a science-realism twist, and the thing many anime-and-manga fans adore: an on-going tournament arc. (Heck, that's pretty much entirely what Angelic Layer is, just one tournament arc captured in 5 single volumes from Tokyopop or in these two omnibus collector editions from Dark Horse.)

I think the one issue I have with these omnibus editions remains the fact that it is a very different reading experience from the one I had when I was younger. Reading the individual volumes from Tokyopop as they were released allowed me to get the story in multiple parts, at a certain pace, and it really drew out the excitement and the tension in the story. Reading the omnibus editions has left me feeling like this has all ended so very quickly, but eh, I suppose I should have expected as much.

Regardless, that's really the only negative thing I have to say. I still love and adore this series and I wish more people read it, it's absolutely worth it. It's so easy to fall in love with the characters, the world, and especially the story and the messages and themes within.

If you get a chance, please check out Angelic Layer. It's worth it, I promise you.

If you already watched the anime adaptation before reading the original manga, as I did, you may be disappointed by the conclusion contained in this volume. The manga is sweet and cute and definitely worth reading from beginning to end, but many elements of the story were changed to be more powerful, meaningful, emotional, and cohesive in the anime. This makes those elements seem weak or even trite (if they're present at all) in the manga. That being said, I still enjoyed this volume. The artwork is typical, gorgeous CLAMP fare and Dark Horse included many full-color illustrations of characters at the beginning and end of the book. While reading I laughed out loud, got emotional, and encountered areas where I couldn't read fast enough to keep up with my excitement; I recommend it.

I think my favourite part of this series is the art style and character design but I expect no less from Clamp. Many of the characters personalities, on the other hand, are quite annoying and are dragged out too much. For example, Tamayo’s teasing of Kotaru feels unnecessary and out of place. The occasional line about Misaki’s underwear is unquestionably uncomfortable and adds nothing to the story. Misaki’s mysterious mother is introduced in this volume and she is also very frustrating and unrealistic; what kind of mother abandons her only child because she is too nervous being around her? Icchan can also be quite annoying and creepy, but other than that, this book is still surprisingly entertaining and I’ve grown quite attached to Misaki. The fight scenes are competent and the story flows nicely. I enjoy reading this book since its simple and digestible; it lacks any ultimate goal or deep character development, but its wrong of me to expect that from a Clamp shonen manga from the early 2000s. Its surprisingly underrated, I only discovered this book from scanning my schools almost empty manga selection 2 years ago and rediscovering the omnibus edition at my public library; I was drawn to the art style and the unique hairstyle of the main character.

Would I recommend this book? If you are looking for easy, cute and absorbing female-lead manga similar to that of Card Captor Sakura, Pokemon, or other light, industry dominating anime of the 2000s, then I encourage you to read!

If the mom was still "the mom who left" i wouldnt have bat an eye, but her involvement in the last part ruined this whole series. What an awful woman, and everyone in the story praises her for being gods gift. Painfully bad twist

Dark Horse Manga doesn't seem to rate their manga but given a shot I would say this manga is rated All Ages and primarily deals with combat between small figurines called Angels as I am sure you must know if you have read the first volume of this series.

New Deus Misaki and her angel Hikaru continue their struggle against every opponent and seemingly impossible odds as Misaki continues to strive to show everyone that even a small figure can be a champion with the support of her best friends and her increasingly large fan base. We also get to meet Misaki's mother at last in a heartfelt moment when Misaki calls out to her. Of course if what I read is true Misaki's mother is also responsible for the Chobits so I should read that series again after reading them years ago. :)

With this book being an omnibus I thought I would choose a favorite from the beginning and the end of the book. For the 1st half I would have to say after Misaki is fighting Jounouchi and her angel Shirahime and although the match is decidedly one sided most of the way through she never gives up which I enjoyed as she fought against her own growing doubts. My favorite part in the 2nd half of the book would have been when Misaki met her mother but once I got to the end of the book I saw a familiar scene from the 1st volume as Misaki looks onat a little girl watching one of her matches on TV and declaring her own love for Angelic Layer which actually gave me the feels as Misaki does an internal monologue about how cool the scene is and how she herself also loves Angelic Layer.

So if you are looking for a quick feel good story about a young lady growing through combat and friendship then why not pickup up volumes one and two of this omnibus set.

What a cute manga! There's nothing deep here, nothing groundbreaking, nothing that makes you re-evaluate your life. In a lot of ways its a girls shonen manga (yeah, I know that technically makes no sense). there's relationshippy thing, but that takes a back seat to the fights, to growing and learning as a person, and to becoming as strong as she can be. the characters are wacky as only CLAMP characters in lighter works can be and the ending is cute, if entirely foreshadowed and obvious. SO glad I finally got this in my 'read' pile.

An adorable short series from CLAMP that sets up as a sort of precursor to Chobits. I don't know what to classify this. It's cute, but there's a lot of fighting. Maybe labels are beyond it, but the fun is still there.
