For the general reader, the book contains some very interesting chapters on specific aspects of Japanese animation, such as gender or foreigner culture. It does also address differences between different art media as week as west and east visual culture. The section on historic develop of Japanese societies of animation and role of academics vs practitioners might be more relevant for targeted audience. In general I really enjoyed the reading.

Review to come. Excellent overview of the history of Japanese animation. Everything from the first produced animation to influences and influential figures are covered in this, and I learned many things that I didn't know before in this collection of academic essays. When I have the chance, I'll write a full review expanding my thoughts.

This book is really for Japanese animation experts, it starts from various mix between the Japanese post-war history and evolution of manga, to get up to the various characters and their connotations more or less Gothic. Particularly interesting was the excursus on the mixed couples (he japanese /she non-Japanese) in anime and manga and characters with no Asian connotations.

Questo manuale sull'animazione giapponese é veramente per esperti, a partire dai vari incroci tra la storia giapponese del dopo guerra e l'evoluzione dei manga, per arrivare fino ai vari personaggi e alle loro connotazioni piú o meno gotiche. Particolarmente interessante l'excursus sulle coppie giapponese lui/non giapponese lei o sui personaggi di anime e manga privi di connotazioni asiatiche.
