For those unfamiliar with the Bhagavad Gita, as I was, I suggest starting with the interpretation in the second half of the book. Edgerton furnishes readers with a detailed background and analysis of the poem, which is invaluable. However, the translation itself is clunky and unmusical. Still, Edgerton says one of the translation's purposes is to help students of Sanskrit. For them, a more literal translation will likely be useful. For a casual reader, however, comprehensibility and lyricism both take a hit.
