The Three Disgraces #2

The Redwyck Charm

Rate this book
THE REDWYCK CHARM was originally published as a Signet Regency and won the Phoenix Desert Rose Golden Quill and the Colorado Romance Writers’ Award of Excellence. Sensuality: kisses, several sex scenes.

Marcus Redwyck comes from a long line of rogues who called upon their legendary charm when necessary to save the family fortunes. Upon his uncle’s sudden death, Marcus becomes the seventh Earl of Amberley and inherits a pile of debts. Reluctantly, he agrees to court Juliana Hutton, an heiress reputed to be as difficult to please as she is beautiful. But unlike his ancestors, Marcus is not a rake. A country gentleman, he fears he knows more about sheep breeding than how to please a lady.

When his first meeting with the heiress is postponed due to her supposed illness, he decides to go with friends to the opera, where he meets the intriguing opera-dancer Mademoiselle Juliette Lamant, who’s suddenly become the rage with all of London’s young bucks. Marcus knows he ought not to dally with an opera-dancer, although he begins to suspect his intended bride has run away from the arranged marriage. But for once in his life he cannot resist temptation.
Passion leads Marcus and the mysterious Juliette to the edge of scandal. Even when it is revealed that she is Juliana Hutton in disguise, it will take all of Marcus’s resolution and the fabled Redwyck charm to win the spirited heiress’s heart.

I quite liked the first half of this book, but after the unmasking, the heroine became kind of annoying. Possibly it was just that she became more accurate to her age, but oh well. I still went ahead and read the other two books in the series, but the first half of this book was definitely the highlight of the series to me.

Pull quotes/notes
"'Why do you persist in thinking that men are all such tyrants? My own papa always confided in my mother, and asked her advice on every matter of impor-tance. They were totally devoted to one another.'
'Such men are rare. Besides, I find the mere thought of being kissed or . . . or touched by a man thoroughly disgusting.'" (19) well this took a turn

"Where had those words come from? he wondered. He would not have dared to utter such a compliment in his native English, but in French the words had come tripping right off his tongue. Perhaps it was all the Burgundy he'd drunk at dinner." (44) esp if he learned French while drunk

"Although she enjoyed talking to the villagers' children and hearing their quaint views on life, she had so little experience of children." (188) so quaint

"Juliana clutched Elinor to her chest. The sensation was strangely comforting, now that she had become used to it.
'Philip forgave me,' said Cat quietly. 'You've done nothing so terrible as what I did last summer. I think you should go, Jule.'
She was out of the chair and halfway out the door when Cat's voice checked her.
'Please, can I have my baby back?'" (210) this narrowly predates the thirty rock gag; must've been in the zeitgeist

I find Juliana's paranoia and suspicions a bit tedious and annoying but other than that it was still a good as well as entertaining read.

Marcus Redwyck is a gentleman farmer and not a rake despite his family's history as such. When he inherits the Earldom from his uncle it is mortgaged to the hilt and on the brink of foreclosure. Despite his personal wishes he is advised to marry an heiress. His advisor arranges for a meeting with a Cit who wants an Earl for his daughter. Juliana is not interested. When a day is set for Marcus and Juliana to meet Juliana runs off and gets a job as an opera dancer through her old dancing instructor. While Marcus is put off day after day due to Juliana's “illness” he goes to the opera with an old friend and sees “Juliette”. Marcus' honor forbids him to trifle with a dancer while he is courting. Although they are drawn to each other honor overrides until one eventful evening when everything falls apart. How now can these two learn to really know each other. Another great book in the series. Looking forward to the last one.

I just finished reading this book and at first it was a little slow in the beginning. As I kept reading and got involved with the main characters I couldn't stop. It is a a very sweet love story with all the highs and lows. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the other 2 in the series.
