Officer Chance Carter is pretty sure he'd still enjoy being on either end of a good ass reaming--just not the one from his supervisor that lands him on an involuntary extended vacation. Another holiday season with nothing to do except visit an old friend.

Former hospital corpsman Bryan Mitchell doesn't feel less than honorable, but that's what his discharge paperwork states. Now he is down and out in Kingman, Arizona until the charity of a stranger lands him a temporary job for the holidays.

When two federal employees go missing during a highly controversial wild horse roundup, the two Willow Springs Ranch newcomers are drafted to help in the search, but if rumors of a local anti-government militia are true, Chance and Bryan may be in serious trouble--and from something far more dangerous than their mutual attraction.

Alternate name for Laura Harner.

Raised in California, Laura likes it hot, which explains why she ended up in Arizona via such diverse places as Japan, Maine, and Florida, and many more places in between. After retiring from the US Navy, she found a niche working for land management agencies, including the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Though she has held many jobs around the world, her favorite was working and living in Grand Canyon National Park. Working (and eating) in New Orleans was a close second. You will find many of her books are set against the rich backdrops provided by coastal Louisiana and northern Arizona.

When asked how she started writing, Laura tells of waking on Boxing Day a few years ago, with a woman named Elena MacFarland yammering in her dreams, demanding her story be told. Despite never attempting to write fiction before that morning, Laura ignored all of the holiday visitors and the Highland Destiny series was born. She doesn’t believe it was a coincidence that the great grandmother who died when Laura was just a baby was named Elena MacFarland. Destiny does play a hand.

Laura became a full-time writer in 2012, and now she spends her time writing, watching her Arizona Diamondbacks, and working on her very own version of the Willow Springs Ranch in northwestern Arizona.

Didn't realize I had not done a review yet. This time we have an LEO Chance Carter and Bryan Mitchell a Navy medic that received a less than honorable discharge when he was caught with the Admiral's son. Bryan is down on his luck when he is steered to Willow Springs. Chance is there as an enforced vacation after screwing up with his boss. Ty's invite to Bryan to stay and work at the ranch, turns into a nightmare when he and Chance are thrown together in only vacant casita. Sparks fly, but not in a good way. Eventually, those sparks become a fire and the two are made for each other. Two kidnapped Federal agents, set the backdrop for the story of Chance and Bryan coming together.

Once again WSR becomes the place I like to be. Lots of love in the air and everywhere. Not a couple in these pairings that I don't love with a passion.

I give it a corral worth of stars.

Insta everything. Insta-lust, insta-love, insta-healing, insta-danger, insta-rescue, insta-Big-Misunderstanding, insta-Reconciliation....you get the picture. No time for any developments, no time for nuthin. Wham, bam, throw it all in there and get it over with.

Nonetheless, it's a smooth enough read. Plenty of plot holes and hanging threads, but if you check your brain at the door and squint a little, it's a pleasant enough read. And, despite some vague D/s overtones, the couple is versatile -- which always earns points from me.

Plus, all the books in this series have beautiful covers. The covers are worth the price of the books all by themselves. I know that's what drew me to them, anyway. Yes, I'm a sucker for sexy covers. So shoot me.

I'm rating this at 2.7 stars, rounding up to credit the cover photos.

Chance may just give Ty a run for his money as my favorite stud in this series! He's a caring, loving, and somewhat kinky man and if you hurt what's his? He'll kill you.

The third installation of the Willow Springs series continues to fire on all cylinders as Ms. Harner introduces Bryan, kicked out of the military on a less-than-honorable discharge. Broke and living from his car, he takes a job at Willow Springs where he's roomed with Chance. Their initial meeting is anything but smooth, but they're forced to work together anyway.

The book is great, the characters are fascinating. You get to see some characters from books one and two, so if you haven't read them you may want to do that so you can be aware of the part each of them plays.

I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series. In this one, the characters behave as in a bad movie.

Two feds go missing, everyone on Willow Springs Ranch is cautioned to stay with someone else for safety, and to radio the others when a stranger approaches. All well and good.

Our 2 main characters head off in search of the bad guys. The first thing Chance does is leave Bryan at the campsite while he goes off in search of a better cell phone signal. Hello? What about staying together for safety? Bryan admires Chance silhouetted against the sky while attaining cell phone signal. Hello? Can you say, "I'm a target"?

While this series is growing on me, I do wish that the stories had been expanded a bit. There is a pretty good story arc going on that is connecting these novella's, but the romance aspect really is a bit too compressed. I could certainly believe it for a HFN story, it's a little too compressed for an HEA. Still enjoyable. I liked Chance and Bryan. Both are wanting and needing a new start and Willow Springs Ranch seems to inspire people to do just that.

I am going to review this book before I finish it. Quite frankly, I did not care for the character "Chance". He turned me off completely and Bryan kept coming off as the helpless maiden. It looks like there is more of a plot, but I am sure it will be solved instantly.

Taking Chance by Laura Harner
Book #3: Willow Springs Ranch Series
Source: Purchase
My Rating: 4/5 stars
My Review:

Chance Carter has to face the facts, his dearly held beliefs and actions just don’t mesh with the straight-laced, by the book Border Patrol office he is currently assigned to. In an effort to do the right thing, Chance has found himself in a bit of hot water which means a short suspension from duty. Between the suspension and the leave time, Chance opts for some time out of town and an extended visit with his good friend, Holden Titus and the Willow Springs Ranch.

Thinking he has the small yet comfortable casita all to himself, Chance walks in after a long and tiring drive to find he has a roommate. Bryan Mitchell is about as down on his luck as a man can be. After literally being caught with his pants down, he listened to the advice of his crappy lawyer and took a deal with the Navy that saw him kicked out, without a home, and without a job. Clearly, Brian did not in any way benefit from this deal and it is just pure luck he was found by Ty from the Willow Springs Ranch. With the promise of honest, hard work, a steady income, a place to sleep, and plenty of food, Bryan eagerly agrees to life at the WSR. While he didn’t exactly count on having a hot roommate, beggars can’t be choosers . . . .

Both Bryan and Chance are thrown into a situation neither is really prepared for. Bryan is trying to get back on his feet and Chance is looking for a little down time. Neither is looking for a relationship or drama. Unfortunately, circumstances around the WSR lead them into drama, danger, and a forced acknowledgment of their attraction to one another. Trouble is brewing around the WSR and Cass calls on Bryan (he has medical training!) and Chance to check out the area and see if they can help with the situation. What none of the men know is that the situation is far more devious and dangerous than they previously suspected and all their lives are going to be threatened. Additionally, amid all the drama and danger, Bryan’s ex comes a calling which not only infuriates Bryan but threatens his budding relationship with Chance.

The Bottom Line: Harner really ups the ante with Taking Chance! In the two previous reads, sure there has been some drama but it hasn’t been anything as dramatic and dangerous as what’s served up in this read. There is real danger in this read which works well with both the long-term plot line for the WSR series and for the particular characters in this read. With their skills and background, Bryan and Chance are both qualified to spearhead the mission assigned to them by Cass. The heightened emotions caused by the inherent danger cause Bryan and Chance to gravitate more quickly toward one another which inevitably leads to some fantastic naughty bits and a truly lovely HEA. In all, I am enjoying this series and its emphasis on real human emotion mixed with realistic issues and events. The naughty bits are a happy bonus and the continued presence of characters from the previous reads keeps me coming back for more.

This story is part of a series and I recommend reading them in order. Bryan left the corps under a shadow and hasn’t got anything to his name, deciding on a fresh start in Las Vegas he’s on his way when he has to stop in Kingman because of car trouble, now he has to accept the charity of strangers until he has his feet under him again. Chance has to take time off to evaluate what he really wants in a job, he decides to visit Holden at Willow Springs Ranch and is surprised to discover he has a roommate. Chance and Bryan are asked to help in the search for two missing Federal agents and find more trouble than expected as they explore the attraction between them.

This is quite a good cowboy/law enforcement story. Chance and Bryan meet when they are both staying at the ranch, Bryan for work and Chance as part of a working holiday. Bryan is trying to get back on his feet after being tossed out of the corps and also from a bruised heart, Chance is trying to figure out just where he belongs in law enforcement after being disciplined for passing on sensitive information to a friend. Together they have to help in a search for missing federal agents but can what they have together survive when disaster strikes and an old flame returns?

I did enjoy this story although it felt very abrupt at times when the characters were talking, I sometimes felt like something had been cut out. The relationship between Chance and Bryan started out great and continued to gain ground really well, the storyline was good and has left a big opening for a new story, and it will be interesting to see where it goes. I was left feeling a little disappointed that no clues were left for the boys but I was overall happy with how the book was written. The sex between the MC’s was really hot with hints as to some kinky sex in the future, but I really liked how both characters opened up to each other and seemed to care for each other. I was a bit disturbed by the ex-boyfriend’s actions and had hoped that Bryan would take action in some form, but I could understand his reluctance after everything that happened before.

I will recommend this to those who love cowboys, law enforcement, a great background story, hot sex, great characters and a happy ending.

This is book three of the Willow Creek ranch book. These do stand-alone fine, though you will want to go back and meet all the other characters.

I love this series. Taking Chance is the story of Chance Carter. We met him briefly in book 2. He is a friend of Holden’s. He finds himself in a bit of trouble on his job after giving Holden a bit of information. He is forced on leave so he decides to go visit Holden at willow Creek Ranch to wind down and try to decide what he wants to do with his future, since he isn’t happy with his job or life.

Bryan is new to the book and series. He was a hospital corpsman in the navy but got caught with the admirals son. He was dismissed from service, took an OTH discharge to avoid court-martial and spare his lover. He finds himself with little money, no job and a broken down car, stranded in Arizona on his way to Vegas.

He stops in the VA office where he is introduced to Ty from Willow Springs Creek Ranch. Ty also being form the navy offers him a job, a place to stay and meals included in the pay. When he gets there he finds his cabin is shared with Chance.

I really liked this book. I was hoping for Chances story and wasn’t disappointed. I really like Bryan too. This is a story of two men facing difficult changes in their lives and also a new unexpected relationship that also throws monkey wrenches in each other’s plans. I love the storylines in these books and how they do connect. I was happy to get a bit more Ty. There is a bit of mystery and suspense that introduces an new threat that I hope to see more of in the next few books. I do have to say the story didn’t go like I thought it was and I was surprised.
I can’t wait to see Chads story.

If you like a great series, hot cowboys, secret agents, SEALS, mystery, intrigue, romance and some pretty hot man-sex this is for you.

Warning: you will look at s’mores in a new light. YUUUUMMM!

This third book in the series was as powerful as the second book just in a different way. I love how each couple have their issues, but they are not the same issues. This one brings in an additional danger element.

Bryan is former Navy like Ty, but he was a medic and got discharged early for getting caught under DADT. He's down and out and bitter about everything. Chance has been working Border Patrol, but all the regulations aren't sitting well with him so he isn't surprised when he gets put on leave and asked to consider another career.

Chance dreams of someday having a man to love and a home together like his friends though he doesn't have much hope of finding this. Bryan just wants to get his life back together. Somehow fate brings them together and after a few bristly snarly moments they give in to their attraction.

Two federal workers handling the wild horse round up go missing and Cass asks Chance and Bryan to go on a scouting expedition to see if they can find them. At some point, the hunted become the hunters and things get pretty exciting after that.

This new danger element caused by the militia types got pretty exciting and was an interesting addition to the mix. There was a vagueness about their involvement and lots of loose ends when the story ended. Since this is a series, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and treat it like this was done intentionally so as to carry over into the next book.

The romance was as rich in its depth as the last one. The attraction is almost right away, but I liked how the feelings and affection grow at their own pace for these two. Neither were the insta-love types particularly as damaged by a relationship gone wrong as Bryan was. I liked how well the two men met each other's needs emotionally.

Another good installment in the series and I hope there will be more.

Cass and Ty ask Chance and Bryan to help locate two missing men. The two set off to the search coordinates. As evening comes around they begin to talk. Bryan finally relates his shame to Chance about what happened to him. Chance comforts Bryan, wanting more than anything to help the man. The problem comes in the next day when Bryan is kidnapped and a note is left saying “Death to faggots and feds. Don’t call the cops or the queer dies.”

Will Chance be able to save Bryan? Will Bryan live or die? Book three is exciting and fast paced. You definitely want in on this ride. Take a Chance, why don’t you?

Heart thumping!

On extended holiday from his job Chance is invited by an old friend to stay at Willow Spring Ranch for a while. Most of the men there are either gay or bi and the rest are just really great people who don't judge. What he wasn't expecting was to fall for Bryan the sweet medic who is trying to restart his life after being slapped with a less than honorable discharge. Throw in some unsavory characters and things get messy.

This series just keeps getting better and better! There are some stellar sex scenes to get you all hot an bothered, there is lots of playful banter to make you smile, and plenty of action and suspense. It was very easy to get pulled into the story. I finished it in one sitting!

Part of the Willow Springs Ranch Box Set: Volume 1, this is Chance and Bryan's story.
Once again Cass is the collector of all who are damaged. Bryan is a veteran, released from the Navy with an OTH discharge, unfairly we find out.
Chance is a federal agent friend of Holden's who we met in book 2. He has to take some vacation time and ends up at the ranche. Bryan is there working.
With all these books is pretty much a case of insta-lust. Although there's always one who is a little more reticent.
Chance is a dominant hotty, probably my favorite next to Ty.

Oh Chance, you might, just might, run neck and neck in my affections with Ty. Chance is the ultimate bad boy with that hidden piece of honorable goodness that will just make you melt. Bryan is struggling to figure out who he is and what he wants from life. The two of them together are funny, sexy, sarcastic and flammable.

Book three in the wildly popular Willow Springs Ranch series by Laura Harner, Taking Chances, is a wild ride through some more crap falling onto the ranch. Luckily for Chance and Bryan there is help in the form of Ty, Cass, Holden, Drew and more ranch hands.

This is a great series and I can't wait for more!

I love the cover on this book!
I did enjoy the story, it was probably a good 3.5 for me. I enjoyed Chance and Bryan's story and the kidnapping sub plot.
I would have liked more if the sub plot could have been expanded more and there were some unfinished plot hooks left hanging - but perhaps they are cleared up in further books.
Chance and Bryan got a bit too mushy too much of the time for me to fully embrace them as characters, and I would have enjoyed more of Bryan's story.
I like that the characters from the previous books have large roles in this book.

What a terrific installment to the Willow Springs Ranch Series. The story of Bryan and Chance is just a few more wonderful true men to add to the ranch. I'm sure their expertise will be used in future stories. I love how the author brings forward who she needs to fully develop the story that is currently in progress. This story brought the cast together tracking a killer. It was also WSR's first holiday season, which brought some surprising proposals. Check it out to see who is getting married! The next book is already out, Hanging Chad looks like another outstanding book!!

3.5 stars--Book 3 in this series is basically a clone of the first two. It is a decent story with likeable MCs and lots of steam. Oh, and less than perfect editing is still an issue.

Although these books are best read in order, they can stand alone. There are no cliffhangers. Because they are so similar, I think they might be enjoyed more if they were not read back-to-back. Being anal, however, I feel the need to close out one series before starting something new. So, alas, I am not taking my own good advice.

Oh my, oh my. This was a steamy and incredible story of Chance and Bryan. While these 2 men faced some difficult decisions in their life, they fell together so beautifully and just seemed to fit one another. I enjoyed the secondary characters included in this story but thought it did seem kind of rushed. There wasn't a lot of plot to the story, other than some incredibly steamy sex scenes, which lets be honest, I LOVED! Wish it had been longer and we got to continue on with Chance and Bryan as they tried many other new experiences in the bedroom together.

Really a good read but not as stellar as the first two in the series. The sex has some heat but not as descriptive or as often as others in the series. I didn't find the two characters as developed as I'd hoped and, while unfair, I didn't think Bryan's situation had the emotional depth that we've seen in the earlier stories and some of Harner's other works. The suspense portion of the plot felt weak to me and was not entirely resolved. I can only assume that it will come up later in the series. I am still loving this series and am glad that Chad is getting his story next.

I can't put my finger on it, but I just couldn't get into this one. I don't remember much about the first book Ty Hard in the series, but do remember not liking it very much. I do know that the two MCs did nothing for me.

Bummer... This series looks great on paper!

Can't recommend.

Third in the WSR series, but this book was so quick and simple and quick it could have been the second part of another book... the passion was there but the depth of the building romance between Chance and Bryan is so lacking... nothing was really told as to why they had a connection for each other except for Bryan falling for Chance cause he saved his life.... but the story was cute simple and not boring.

Sadly, I feel I have no other choice than to reduce my ratings for all Laura Harner books. The evidence of plagiarism for some of her books appears incontrovertible and she has even apologized for it. This, for me, taints her entire body of work. I can no longer trust the integrity of any of her writing.

This in no way reflects upon the integrity or quality of any author with whom she collaborated.

Great read if...you enjoyed the other books in the series, a quick read, strong male characters, romance, drama, male on male romance, drama, scorn lover stories, cop characters, cowboys, finding love, and a HEA! (Side note: I actually liked this book more than book 2, because both main characters found a way into my heart. Writing is easy to enjoy as ever)

Another great story from Willow Springs Ranch. My only complaint with the book is that I wanted more detail on the side story of the terrorist group. I'm hoping that we get back to it at some point in time, i would love to see the general come face to face with Ty, Chase, Holden and everyone else. I really am completely bought into the world surrounding Willow Springs Ranch.

Sometimes life seems unfair but life is just getting you in position to give you what you need. These two guys are so needy. Brian needs due to a rough few months and Chance has a need to be helpful to him. And it doesn't help that lust at first sight strikes hard. It is a hot sweet story with a little angst and danger. Enjoy I did.

I like this series a lot. They are quick reads, and move at a good, but not rushed pace. I liked the first book, Ty Hard, the best - it's probably because it's about Ty. I love all of Ty's appearances in subsequent books.
