A fascinating ramble through the landscape of modern mathematics with some indications of how it came to acquire the form it has / had c. 1960. The 0verlap of topics with Richard Courant's What Is Mathematics? is considerable, which gives me some comfort that Courant was not as idiosyncratic in his choice of topics as he is in his general style and delivery. This seems to be a sort of roadmap and travelogue for mathematics students (of all ages... like myself...) to help them decide where to go with their subsequent studies, rather than either a rigorous text about any specific branch of mathematics or a popularization a la Courant or my personal favorite, Journey through Genius.
