Three years after narrowly escaping a one way trip to the gas chamber, the fugitive known only as Animal finds himself drawn back to the scene of the crime, Harlem, NY.
Throughout his entire time in exile the only thing that kept Animal going was the thought that he would one day be reunited with his soul mate, Gucci. But one bullet changed everything.
When his enemies tried to murder Gucci they crossed the line, so he vowed to cross them all. While Gucci teeters between life and death Animal sets out on a bloody mission fueled by love and orchestrated by bullets...there would be no more innocents.
Alliances are formed and secrets uncovered while Animal wages his personal war on the streets of Harlem only to discover one great truth....he is but a small piece in a much greater puzzle.
In 2002 K'wan hit the scene with his debut novel Gangsta, under Triple Crown Publications. It was the first novel released by the budding house and would eventually become the building block for what is now a multimillion dollar company. What started as a therapeutic release went on to become a part of urban-lit history and an Essence bestseller, as well as drawing rave reviews overseas. After penning his second novel, Road Dawgz (2003), K'wan drew the attention of St. Martins press. The literary powerhouse quickly signed K'wan to a multi-book deal, the first of which being Street Dreams (2004). In 2008 he received the Black Author of the year award from Black Press Radio for the novella Blow. Since his insertion into the publishing world K'wan has been featured in Vibe, Pages, King, Felon, Big News, The Library Journal, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Press, Clutch and most notably Time Magazine, to name a few. He was also interviewed by MTV News for a feature on Hip-Hop fiction, and a guest on Power 105s morning show as well as NPR (national public radio). In addition to being an accomplished author, K'wan is also a motivational speaker, mentor to at risk children and the C.E.O of Black Dawn, Inc. K'wan currently resides in New Jersey where he is working on his next novel.
Whew child! This isn't for the faint of heart. I decided to read this buddy read this one with Monae for fun and now I'm fully invested in the series. There are quite a few content warnings for this one so I apologize in advance for missing some. CW: abuse, mention of rape several times with descriptions, derogatory language towards women, drug abuse, drug addiction, gore, violence, kidnapping, murder on page, fighting
Animal is probably one of K'wan's most well known works. Even without having read any of his other books, I've heard things about this one for a while. The book itself is hard to describe, but at it's core Animal is a story about love and revenge. When Animal finds out that the love of his life Gucci has been shot and is in critical condition, he decides to make the journey back to Harlem, NY to get revenge. What follows is a complicated story full of anger, pain, and loss.
What Worked: This book was a hell of a ride. I'm not exactly sure how to describe my experience reading this except that it was a rollercoaster ride with unexpected twists and turns. Honestly, I enjoyed this book for entertainment value. There are certain elements that don't necessarily hold up considering that this book was originally published over 10 years ago, but it was engaging and it was a book that I thought about even when I wasn't reading it. Animal is probably one of the most complex characters that I've read in the past few years. There were moments when I really resonated with his pain, but others where I thought every decision he made was out of pure stupidity. I can't imagine the amount of guilt that he must have felt after seeing Gucci in the hospital, but I was very impressed with K'wan's ability to capture the delicate nature of leading with your heart as opposed to leading with your mind. And what happens when someone upsets the balance between the two. Honestly, this book was about to be 3.5 stars, BUT that ending changed everything. It's not anything that I could have possibly seen coming and it immediately made me check out and begin reading book #2.
What Didn't Work: Apparently, Animal is actually introduced in another series by K'wan which I will be checking out relatively soon; however, it is noted by many reviewers that you can read this without having read any other titles. I would agree with that because K'wan attempts to include those readers who don't have any previous knowledge. However, I don't like the way that K'wan does this. He attempts to provide clarity of "who is who" through the introduction of SO MANY different characters and it doesn't always work. At times, it was difficult to keep up with all of the varying perspectives. Granted it gave a three dimensional perspective of the world, but figuring out the connections of all the characters was tough and bothered me at times.
Overall, this was an interesting step into a new series for me and I'm excited to continue on. This isn't one that I would necessarily recommend to everyone because of the violence and gore, but my goodness did I enjoy it.
Let me start by saying this book is 400 pages and I completed it in one day. Once I started I did not stop until it was completed. I have read all of the Hood Rat series and most of K'wan's other work, but this by far is now the best! Even if you haven't followed the series, I still recommend this book. This book follows Animal as he takes off on a journey of revenge all for the love of his life Gucci. While Gucci is in a coma and fighting for her life, Animal is out making the people responsible pay with their lives. Then there is Ashanti, who was a part of Animal's old crew, and is currently involved in a war with the Clarks because he works for King James. Everyone thinks Animal is dead, so the Clark's have an unknown enemy. We also get to catch up with other's from the Hood Rat series, so if you haven't read the series, K'wan does a wonderful job of giving backstory on the characters so you can keep up. Outside of Animal and Ashanti, Alonzo aka Zo-Pound is one of my favorite characters. He is always at a constant struggle with trying to keep his old self Zo-Pound from reappearing for good. This is a must read! I am seriously considering reading this book again and that happens rarely! It was full of surprises, twists, and turns. You would never guess the outcomes for any of the characters! Bravo K'wan! I am a fan for life!
With K'wan releasing Animal II: The Omen last week, I knew I had to pay Animal a visit and refresh my memory. I promise I read Animal at least twice a year ago, but reading it again over the weekend was like reading it for the first damn time. I was holding my breath, biting my nails...like I had never read the book. Ugh! All I could say is this damn K'wan is a freaking brilliant Author...with his tasteless ass! LOL!
There are so many things I loved about this book...I don't even know where to begin. Well let me say this I always tell folks to read the 'HoodRat Series' before diving head first into Animal, because a lot of the characters had their first appearance in one of the Hoodrat books.
Anywho...Animal had just escaped prison and was living life as a fugitive...until his girl Gucci was shot. Now he is making his way back to Harlem to get revenge..."I respect your faith in the higher power, but I'm gonna put my faith in firepower." Please believe the streets were not ready for Animal to be resurrected from the dead. But while Animal was away, Ashanti already had the streets rocking from his havoc. "Niggaz know how I give it up; give me mine or pose for that white line." Now with them both on a death mission - no one in Harlem is safe!!! Oh wait...did I fail to mention Alonzo AKA Zo-Pound is back from playing square and he is handling business in the streets.
I have to tell you Zo-Pound is one of my favorite men...he can be trusted, he can be GQ and street at the same time, and he is calm in sticky situations. One of my favorite scenes was when Zo was on a date with Veronica and he ran into Porsha...and the next thing you know he was defending her (Porsha's) honor against that bastard Don B. 'Don B. had no idea he had even been hit until he staggered backward and bumped his pack against the corner of the booth where Frankie and her girls were sitting. The second slap was even more vicious that the first, lifting Don B. off his feet and sending him sprawling onto the table between Porsha and Dena. where Dena's drink accidentally spilled on his head.' But that was not the best part...I just wanted to share that Zo knocked the hell out of Don B. Now on to the good part...so Tone (Don B. right hand man) thinks he is going to back his dude up...NOT! "Tone, I'll bet you all the money in your pocket that I can knock this li'l nigga out his shoes and still peel yo cap before you clear that gun. If you draw, nigga, you better be Picasso," Alonzo warned. Tone wisely dropped his hands to his sides. Whhhoooooooooooooo Bayyybbbbbbeeeee I can read this part a hundred times and still be laughing! LOL!
This book has it ALL - street wars, lines being crossed and drawn, new loves and lovers being reunited. I could talk about Animal forever, but I don't want to ruin it for those of you who haven't read it yet. I don't know what you're waiting on...read the damn book already! But I will sum it for you...oh wait I can't their are so many players that make this book what it is...Dena, Frankie, Cutty, Swann, Shai, Nickels, Holiday...the list goes on and on. But bayybbeeee when you meet the Priest - Church will be O-U-T - OUT!
Kudos to K'wan for being so talented with a pen. He definitely has a gift and we thank him for sharing it with us. #Tasteless
K'wan did it again. Soon as I opened this book I was hooked! There is plenty of action and surprises in this book. Animal was not playing no games and he was definitely back for revenge. I felt bad for Tionna, but I will not say anything else because I don't want to give away any spoilers. If you haven't read Animal, then you need to get on it!
OMG!!! This one did it for me completely! So many great twists and turns...I couldn't put the book down. I started with Welfare Wifeys and Eviction Notice and this one didn't disappoint....I am hoping that there is another part after this one. Thanks Kwan for the good read.
I absolutely loved this story! It was so entertaining, and there was never a boring moment. I can totally see myself diving into K'wan's collection because I enjoy listening to his books way more than watching TV. Honestly, there’s nothing on TV right now that can compete with his incredible stories!
My 3.5 rating is strictly for the last 30 minutes of the book. Animal didn't hold my attention. I was not interested in any of the characters. The names were similar as well as the personalities. It was hard to differentiate. I knew what was coming so, nothing was a surprise. This was a typical book with an overused plot. The twist at the end wasn't a big shock or stretch either.
The audio was decent. I enjoyed the actual sounds throughout. I will continue on to book two, at a fast speed, to see if this series can redeem itself.
This was a amazing story like no other book I have read, Animal wants revenge even if it puts his own life in danger. All I can say is this Author really pulls you into the world of Animal and Gucci. I rate this as Highly recommended to read
This is not for the weary. K'wan has been a favorite of mines for a long time. He has a knack for being a great storyteller of fast pace novels with lots killing. This is not for the faint at heart. He has a gift of being able to incorporate numerous characters all of who play an essential part. You will have to be able to keep up. It helps to have read the previous novels as his characters that haven't been killed off don't die they multiply. You will never know when you will see a character from a previous book pop up.
Welcome to a gangster love story. This is not for the faint at heart. Gucci has been shot and nothing will stop Animal from getting to the love of his life. Not the fact that everyone thinks he is dead. Not the fact that he is a fugitive and not the fact that he has enemies in NYC. None of that matters as his heart is breaking and those responsible will feel the wrath of Animal.
The book started out slow to me as I was waiting for the climax. About halfway through is when the novel starts to jump start into gear for me and then I was off to the races to see how it was going to end. Shai Clark is back and he is still the man, King James and his crew want the top spot but we know Shai is not going down that easy. Zo- pound is back in the street hard body. Don B is still up to his tricks but can he still shock us? Yes he can and he does. I was flipping pages to get to the end and when I reached the end I was like "oh sh*t." See,this is why I waited so long to read as I know there would be a part two, that I can't wait to dive into. So now I'm just counting down to the release of "Animal 2." K'wan has done it again he brought the fire back.
Animal was absolutely amazing!! I can easily say that this is my favorite book written by K'wan. The author takes you on an emotional rollercoaster while listening to this book. You become further invested in the characters that you've grown to love/hate over the years as well as incur some losses along the way. I literally found myself sitting on the edge of my seat at work when listening. Kudos to Cary Hite also for doing such a great job with the narration. To me, he definitely showed he has skills in acting and I couldn't imagine any other person giving a voice to these characters. It was like watching a movie in my mind! I'm already going through withdrawals for the next book! Great job K'wan!!!
I've been reading urban fiction since 6th grade. Sometime in high school I was given Gangsta by K'wan and I remember being so enthralled by it. I kept recommending it to everyone and eventually I loaned it out and never received it back. Years later, I was reintroduced to the authors work one day in Barnes and Noble via the Hood Rat series. I was waiting for someone to get off of work and I sat on the floor and read the entire book. Since then, I have faithfully been following his releases. `Animal' was nothing short of awesome. K'wan is very good at tying all of the books in the series together without losing the characters', or the reader's interest. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for part II's release in November.
All that I can say is I am glad that I didn't give up on K'Wan. He redeemed himself with this book. Yes, he had subplots that at first glance took away from the story, but he in some way connected them. When I read Hoodlum, I was cheering for Shai, now I absolutely hate him! I hope in the next book, yes there will be a continuation to this series, he gets his due. (Hopefully, so does Don B).
Ashanti and Alonzo grew up right before my eyes in this book. I love the direction that he took with both of those characters. Please K'Wan, let Animal and his crew come out on top of this war, because that is what it has truly turned into.
What Cutty did for Fatima truly shows the love a parent has for their children. Dena played herself, I wish there was a better ending for her and Tionna.
Good book! If you have read the other books in this series, you really need to read Animal. You will not be disappointed.
Animals enemies went above and beyond when they tried to kill the love of his life, Gucci. Animal vowed to kill everyone involved even if it was the last thing he would do. Life gets the better of him when secrets are revealed in his hunt for revenge.
I have been anticipating the release of Animal for quite sometime now. Kwan is a rare author who always stays relevant amongst his fans. He keeps you gripped from the first word until the last. The way he laces the pages with murderous thoughts and a brilliant plot are breathtaking to say the least.
When you have an author that can take you on numerous, mind blowing twists and turns and never saturates the story with an un-necessary drama one thing is evident. I am convinced that Author Kwan Foye is the undisputed King of Literature. He is in a class by himself and can not be touched, imitated or duplicated.
Everybody's favorite character from The Hood Rat series is back with his own self-titled book, Animal. Animal is back from the "dead" to seek revenge on anybody that played a part in his love, Gucci, in the hospital. Animal is back with a vengence and nobody seems him coming. Will him and Gucci make it out alive or will the war that Animal created consume them?
This book only proved to me why I am such a fan of this author. With this book, K'wan told an awesome story and gave the reader many twists, turns, and unexpected events. At the end of this book I began to crave more and needed more. This is a book I would definitely recommend to others, especially if you are a fan of K'wan. #teamanimal
What can I say about this author and this book in particular that wouldn't give it all away? I love K'wan for coming out with Animal because, like so many of us fans, we couldn't just let that be the end. We had to see justice for Gucci, and we just had to know how Zo, Ashanti and the ladies ended up. Now, the ending of Animal has left me slack jawed and so anxious to see if there will be another part to this series. It just keeps going!!! One surprise after the next, but always keeping us wanting more.
K'wan takes you back through the neighborhoods with the men and women that seem destined to go no further than their stoop or to a hustler's party where soneone is bound to die. Too many subplots which caused me to forget their original plights and the hype surrrounding this read was lost somewhere in the mix of recycling new/younger characters between the past and present. Resurrection of characters from previous works tend to become annoying as you try to trigger your memory and find their true purpose. An ongoing soap opera.
I have read all K'wans books so far. If I missed one please someone let me know! I am a huge fan of his books and I can't get enough! I believe K'wan is a Literary Genious! His characters come to life as you read. I know I seen "Animal" in real life some where... Lol! I couldn't put Animal down. My eyes was burning so much but I was determined to read it all at once! Seemed like I waited so long for this book! I was not disappointed! I really enjoyed myself! All I have left to say is.... More please K'wan!!! ;-)
I just so happened to read Animal 2 first, because I thought that I had read the first one already. Isn't there another book about Animal when he becomes a rap artist, and what is the name of it? In this book, he comes back from the dead, and in the second one he finds out who his father is. And this is the first book, the 2nd book is Animal 2, what is the name of the other one? I KNOW I've read it before. Anyway...... they are both good, you just need to get that other book first!
What can I say about this book? There are so many good things to say its hard to pick this book was so full of action and suspense it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! It was 407 pages but that didn't matter! Animal has always been one of my favorite characters because he has so much depth he would be the person you love to hate but you can't because he is so genuine! Can't wait until the next installment hopefully it doesn't take long
The one thing that kept Animal going was that he would be reunited with his love Gucci. But when he finds out that the opposition crossed the line and shot Gucci, Animal goes to work. The deals that were cut, the surprised visits he made from the "grave", and the revenge he sought were all a tangled web. The twists and turns in this book are a good look at the street life. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.
This book is not for everybody. I guess I am one of those people. It wasn't too bad, it just had a lot going on, and OMG talking about a lot of characters. I'm thinking that I won't be finishing the series. The desire is just not there. Just wasn't my kind of book. In my opinion, K'Wan could have told the story in fewer words with fewer characters. I just took too long to get to the point.
The sixth installment of the Hood Rat Series is a definite page turner. In true K'wan form! there are many twists and turns in this book. I believe that all books written by this author should come with a warning label. The reader should not blink or move while reading, for fear of missing something!
