Its got me beat to be honest. Doug Dorst's novel has so much to it that I don't know how to explain. It's depressing, mellow and somehow so realistic. Sure, zombies are there but that's not really the main focus at all. The story is about the main character Mercer and how he deals with the shitty situations happening to him. And believe me, there are quite ALOT of horrible things happening.
It's a character driven story written in present tense that might make a few traditional readers apprehensive but it gets better through time. I've long passed the point of being uncomfortable with present tense stories.
The supernatural elements are somewhat underwhelming and I feel like I never really got to see the "zombies" or "living dead." At one point, I was wondering if I got the right story because the synopsis is not accurate in the slightest. Does that detract from the story? Nooo way. Boy Fourteen, Toronto, Fiora, Jude? They all make this story much more than it should be. In fact, I strongly believe that taking out the supernatural elements of the story would make it the same story. It just seemed like such a minor thing. Damn. I sound like I'm complaining but I genuinely enjoyed the story. WARNING HOWEVER. If you're expecting a story with happiness and general good vibes, this is not the story for you to read. It's real and decisions in the story lead to real consequences happening. I don't want to spoil the ending so I'll just say an "ending is an ending." Cryptic afffff
