Potentate

Rate this book
From http://www.tiberiusfox.com/

Can heaven touch the earth? And what happens when it does? An angel's touch is one thing, but the touch of a potentate is another. And sometimes heaven's embrace can be deathly cold and so very deep dark...

Canon Peter Talbot is no ordinary clergyman. Apart from being clever, he is also profoundly psychic. It comes as no surprise that he is ‘Chief Exorcist’ of the diocese of Salisbury in England.

The village of Lychwell in Somerset has been plagued by death, madness and uncanny events ever since Roman times. In this mysterious setting on the St Michael ley line near the ancient town of Glastonbury and the antique city of Wells, Talbot must exorcize a devil from the past that feeds upon the living..

I received this book through Goodreads Giveaways, and this in no way affects my review (although it was very kind of the author.)

How to set up this book: find the most over the top 'Most Haunted' episode, and tailor it to be a murder mystery for British television audiences at five o'clock on a weekday afternoon.

This book is marketed as a 'Peter Talbot Enigma', which sounds interesting enough with a word like enigma, but really is quite a slog. The eponymous Talbot is absolutely hideous as a protagonist, with an air of smugness about everything he does, and a know-it-all attitude that I struggled to care about as a reader. His companions are one dimensional, which is a shame in a book that manages to quite intelligently discuss the possibilities of other dimensions.

I will say that the prologue was a better read to me than the rest of the book put together. All the energy seemed to vanish after that. It was a shame really. Sadly, I don't think I'll be revisiting any more enigmas with Peter Talbot.

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads.

I'm really disappointed in myself for not being able to finish this book. I got it for free so I feel it's my duty to read the whole thing. After all, the author must have spent many hours of his life writing it and crafting the story in his head. However, I've spent two months of my life struggling through this and I'm still only on page 138, so I think it's time for me to take a break from reading it. I may or may bot come back to it someday, it depends how I feel.

The plot, so far, hasn't been too bad. Some parts were even intriguing and the story does seem quite interesting. It's the writing and characters that I have problems with.

Both Talbot and Flynn are horribly boring characters who I just can't stand. Flynn is the typical sexy female character written by adult males for adult males. She is, of course, absolutely stunning and very intelligent. She wears skin tight clothes and apparently is completely in love with Peter Talbot, though neither of them know each other's feeling for sure. I can't understand why in adult books that men are interested in there always has to be a good-looking, clever young woman who is attracted to a middle aged man who is completely dull.

And completely dull is exactly what Talbot is. He's one of the most boring characters I've ever read. He has absolutely nothing interesting to say and I honestly can't stand him. I hate the way he thinks and I hate the way he communicates with other people. One minute he's thinking or talking all professionally and the next he'll be using slang and acting like he's just a common person. Then, all of a sudden, he's all superior again, everyone else is so stupid and he's the only intelligent person on the planet. He's literally one of the worst characters ever.

The writing is almost as annoying as the characters, unfortunately. The writer is constantly on about the most ridiculous things that are completely unrelated to the story. The story is going on like normal and suddenly the author starts writing about something entirely separate for two or three pages before returning to what the story. It's like he's trying to show off his knowledge of random historical and scientific things, but it is all really boring and doesn't add anything to the book.

I could go on, but I think I've expressed my feeling towards this book enough. I really don't like it but as I mentioned above the plot is actually quite interesting, which is the only reason it's getting two stars instead of one.

Like other people are saying, I found it hard to get absorbed into the story. I get the same feeling with other books, but after a while certain things start happening that do eventually get you hooked. This book did not really do that for me.
The story was good, the writing quality was good, but it just did not captivate me like other books I have read in this genre.
The book was given to me by Goodreads Firstreads.

I have won this book through Goodreads.

At first, I found the beginning to be not so captivating, but more I read, more interested I became. I loved the ending and the character development of Peter Talbot, the protagonist.

I'll be honest and say that I couldn't really get into this book and was unable to finish it.
