What do you do when you learn your family is the one who's holding all the secrets? Secrets that could get you killed...
Ella is looking forward to starting college in the fall with her best friend Josie. She’s looking for a place where she can get away from her overbearing parents and two older annoying brothers. Unfortunately Ella realizes that sometimes the past comes back to haunt you.
Ella soon learns that the man who terrorizes her dreams is in fact real and coming after her.
When one of her classmates is murdered, Ella slowly recognizes this is not some strange coincidence. Ella fears that the boy she’s falling in love with is the one who stalks her dreams and no longer knows who she can trust.
When she finally learns the truth of her family's deepest secret, Ella has to face her demons by taking out one of the people she thought she could trust…before they kill her.
I live in a fantasy world and have an overactive imagination. But the best part is that I never stop creating new characters and stories to share. I love writing and expressing myself in a way everyone else can enjoy.
I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review and let me tell you, I am so glad that I requested to review it. It was one of those books that you can't put down and if you do, it is all you think about and are anxious to know what happens next. When I first started, it gripped me from the very beginning. It was heart wrenching learning that Ella and her boyfriend at the time was in a car accident. I hate stories like that and wanted to end it, because I figured it would be all sappy and woe is me.
The author developed these characters so perfectly. I liked Josie and Tristan. From reading the synopsis on Goodreads, I thought that the bad guy would be Tristan and not the other dude, but that is what makes the story so brilliant. Now, I did have a problem with all of the grammatical errors I was seeing. The story was amazing and everything was perfect, but the grammar. I had a problem with how the author used the word insistence instead of the word assistance. After that, I started to question was this work an original fanfiction at one point, maybe Twilight??? I have nothing against Twilight if the author did and I have nothing against fanfiction. I enjoyed learning that this book was indeed about vampires.
Finding out that this was not a stand-alone and it's the first in a four book series, I was excited. I hate that I finished it because I never wanted it to end, but the thing at the end with the person not....... living and the cliffhanger, I could do without.
Thank you Jessica Miller for the opportunity to review this amazing book. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!!
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Jessica Miller.) 18-year-old Ella is off to college with her best friend Josie, after the death of her boyfriend Kyle in a car accident that they were both involved in.
Now at uni, Ella is having a rough time holding back the admirers, and when a girl is murdered on campus things start to get even weirder. Who should Ella trust though? Should she go with Tristan – the boy who annoyed her at first? Or Jack – the boy who’s just been a friend so far? Who killed the girl that was murdered? And what secrets are Ella’s family hiding from her?
I’m kinda torn over this book, because it had both good points and bad points, and while it drove me mad in places, the story held promise too.
I’m going straight down the middle with this one – 5 out of 10, and I’m going to split this review into what I did like, and what I didn’t like – warning this could be a long review!
What I liked: - Ella was a likeable character. I liked that she hadn’t immediately gotten over her boyfriend’s death, and that she thought it was weird when his brother then tried to kiss her. - I liked that Ella didn’t immediately fall for Tristan. She was pretty anti-Tristan to start with (as was I), although he did seem to grow on her somehow. - I liked that Ella’s mother was worried about her, and didn’t forget about her once she went off to college. - I liked the mystery of not knowing who it was that caused the car accident, what Ella and her family really were, who Jack really was, and what there was that was strange about Tristan. It was this mystery of not knowing what was really happening that kept me reading. - A surprise death right at the end!
What I didn’t like: - While Ella was a perfectly nice girl, I didn’t get why so many people had the hots for her. There was her dead boyfriends brother, her brothers friend Mark, Tristan, Jack, some sleezy bloke in a club, and possibly more – I just can’t remember them all. I think this was maybe just a few boys too many. - Tristan – he creeped me out a bit, and while Ella went from hating him to loving him, I didn’t. Tristan really didn’t do it for me I’m afraid. - The length of this book! While it says on goodreads that this book is 328 pages long, they must be big pages, cause on my kindle fire, on the smallest font size, this book came in at around 650 pages – just way too long. I think the biggest problem with this was how much unnecessary stuff there was in there. I mean Ella going to wake her brother up took several pages, and could have been summed up in just a few lines; eg: I stomped up the stairs, woke my brother up by slapping him round the face with a wet fish, then went back to the kitchen to eat what was left of my breakfast. - This book also had a few changes in tense, which unfortunately is a pet hate of mine. The book is written in the past tense, but for some reason every time there was an ‘almost sex’ scene (they never actually do it), the story changed to present tense. Eg: “I ran my hand up his back and behind his neck, tugging him closer, wanting to feel his body on mine.” (Past tense) “I part my lips inviting him to kiss me deeper.” (Present tense). This could really do with being fixed. - When Ella finds out what she really is (not telling), it’s not just her, but most of her friends and family too. This is probably just me, but it always feels a little unreal when everybody turns out to be supernatural, rather than just a few. This revelation didn’t really work for me I’m afraid, especially when it then turns out that Ella isn’t just a *******, she’s also royalty, and will be taking over from her father in 5 years?! - The cliff-hanger ending. I read through this entire book, and I don’t even know how it ends now! Overall; this book had promise, and while it didn’t do it for me, I’m sure other people would enjoy this, it could benefit from a little editing though. 5 out of 10.
I was thoroughly surprised by how much I liked this book! I found myself unable to put it down, completely invested in the characters, and frequently frustrated with Ella (which is a good sign because it means I cared about her and her actions). This book is truly a hidden gem and I’m glad I read it.
The story began with Ella about to head off to college. She’s excited to get away from her overbearing parents and have a fresh start after a particularly traumatizing incident that has her family watching her closely for signs of mental distress. Ella attended a party with her best friend Josie and found that Tristan, the cocky boy with the beautiful blue eyes, couldn’t seem to stop staring at her. Ella’s new life away from her family had her struggling to balance classes, social life, dealing with fighting off Tristan’s sly advances, trying to turn down a sorority, and figuring out who she was for the first time in her life.
I loved the characters. Josie was fun, mischievous, and quirky while Ella was more reserved, stubborn, and quick to anger. Tristan was definitely my favorite character because I kept trying to figure him out. He was the life of the party, the popular guy who always gets what he wants, with an arrogance that would make any sane girl cringe. But he was also extremely deep, intelligent, and even a little sensitive when he wasn’t aware of it. The conflict and dynamic between Ella and Tristan was enough to keep me on my toes the entire novel.
I knew something strange was going on from the beginning of the book, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. The mystery was slowly unraveled and I liked how subtle it was because it was unpredictable. Is this a werewolf book? A vampire book? Are there angels/demons/witches? Other paranormal creatures/things/mixtures? I truly had no idea until the big reveal, despite the vague and subtle hints dropped throughout the text. So I’m not telling. =) While the paranormal conflict was slow, I cannot say the book was slow at all. I was entertained simply by the conflict between the characters, namely Ella and Tristan, and the paranormal conflict was just a lovely addition.
While I enjoyed The Wanderers a lot and thought it was a great story, it had some issues, mostly with editing. There were errors throughout the text: misspelled words, misused phrases, typos, and occasional switches from past tense to present, though these weren’t terribly numerous or incredibly distracting to me. I felt that many areas of the book could have been condensed and others elaborated more elegantly. It took a long while for the plot to get moving and only certain scenes ended up having a relevance to the plot. Overall, it’s not a polished novel. With that being said, I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. The romance and tension was amazing and I felt like I really knew the characters well. I debated with myself about dropping the stars from 4 to 3 because of the issues, but I feel like I enjoyed the plot far too much to give it just a 3.
I would recommend this series to others, as long as they are open to reading books that need some polishing. I will continue the series because I’m anxious to find out what happens to the characters next!
I was truly surprised with The Wanderers. The author really keeps all of the secrets off of the blurb on the back of the book. You pick up this book thinking it's about one thing and BOOM! It's not. Now don't take that the wrong way. It's nice to be honestly surprised sometimes when reading. All too often, the blurb will give away too many surprises ... which is why I only read the summary of a book only once - just to see if it's interesting and then I'll put the book down until I forget what it's about. I know, weird. Anyway ... in the beginning, I was really entertained with The Wanderers. The author seems to have channeled what it is like to be a teenager and in that awkward phase of your life, with all of the pressures and influences that you're surrounded with. The plot is really mysterious and you just can't put a finger on what exactly is going on. Good stuff.
I found the main character, Ella, to be endearing and sweet but then she would have the bursts of petulant immaturity which were a bit annoying but I'm assuming that it was put in to make her seem like a teenager? I don't know. It felt like it was almost on the verge of being a full blown temper tantrum and if that had happened, I would have just put the book down. I'm not really interested in reading about spoiled kids who throw tantrums. It didn't come to that, thank goodness. A bit into the book, Ella became self-righteous and she started scolding people ... I don't know. Is it that big of a deal? No. But it bothered me enough during the story to make me write a note about it so I figured it was worth mentioning. For the most part, the characters were really well written. I enjoyed the interactions between them and actually looked forward to the next scenes just to see what they would say to each other.
While the mystery surrounding the plot was intriguing during the beginning, about halfway through, I found it really tiresome. I just wanted to throw my own tantrum because I wanted it to get to the point. Dragging out the mystery is great ... until it's too long. Hell, I'm not an author. I can't imagine all of the hard work that goes into writing a novel but I am a reader and I know what I like. I like mystery but not too much because it becomes boring and I'll put the novel down. Which is what happened this time. I needed a breather to see if maybe I was just impatient and not wanting to fully invest ... which I didn't think was the case because I really like the story. I like the meat of The Wanderers and even after the few issues that I had, I still enjoyed it and I'll probably pick up the next installment.
Probably. But I'm a little torn. There were just some grammar issues that made me want to scream and I hope that the your/you're and then/than issues are resolved in the next novel. Basically, pick it up. It's a good paranormal novel and it will keep you entertained and wishing for more when you get to the end. I'm pretty curious as to how this plays out next ...
This is an amazing book! It's very well written and the plot and climax is surprising! It definitely was a good read!
This book starts out with Ella going off to college. She's happy to get away from her overprotective parents and be free, especially after the accident. Josie, Ella's best friend, invites Ella to a party and that's where everything starts. She meets a boy, Tristan, and he...has magnificently gorgeous blue eyes. He's logical and confident, a little over the top, and she's scared whether or not he'll rip her heart to pieces.
Alright, the characters. They're beautifully written. They weren't just part of the background. They were needed in the story. What I mean is that they didn't just paint the background, they had been in the front lines with Ella and Tristan. Without them, I don't think I would've liked this book as much. Each character had their own personality. They weren't robotic or the same in any way. And Jack... You'd think you knew everything about him while you were reading the book, but you don't. He's such a mystery. I can't believe I was actually debating on which team I'd be on... Team Jack or Team Tristan?
Oh my sweet love. Let's talk about Tristan. He's smart. He's reasonable. He's like other high school boys and he knows how to enjoy one. He's logical too. Omg. He's just the perfect guy. Every single detail that Jessica has written about him is amazing.
This book was very unpredictable. I couldn't figure out what it was that made it so irregular, aside from the fact that Jessica is a very good writer. It is a paranormal book, but while you're reading, you wouldn't know if this novel is about vampires, witches, werewolves etc... until halfway through the book. I loved how Jessica slowly revealed everything. It kept me reading through the whole book and when it was revealed, I jumped with excitement.
Some things that bothered me about this book was it's spelling, grammar and misused words. It didn't bother me so much that I had to stop reading overall(which I wouldn't have done anyway), it was just something that needed to be improved. I also wished there was more contact with people back at her home after she moved onto college. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The romance with Tristan and Ella was amazing written and the storyline was so awesome. The ending though...makes me want to read more, except, at the same time, I don't because Tristan was someone that kept me reading.
I was given this book from the author and from Lovers of Paranormal (LOP) in exchange for an honest review.
Where to start? This is a pretty damn good book! There is a huge layer of different forms of emotions just swirling everywhere, from different people, the events that take place, everything. Jessica Miller has a certain way with words that make you get into these characters as if you are watching it happening right there. You get to feel what they are feeling. Experience it all. Its quite an amazing feet to make me be able to do that by just reading words on pages.
As I got this book from an amazing paranormal group (LOP) you obviously know that this book is a paranormal style book. Only it isn't. You get the feel that something out there is paranormal but its 3/4 of the way into the book that you finally find out why and you know what? I Love that about this! I love that there is a back story to these characters BEFORE we find out what they are. So they have a personality, they have a past they have ATTITUDE. You get to meet the person, before everything goes down. It was very refreshing. I'm already a quarter of the way through the second book and page after page is going and I'm loving every second of it!
I was given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.A truly fantastic Y/A paranormal romance. Ella is about to leave for college to get away from her parents and get a fresh start after the traumatizing incident that has her family watching her closely for any signs of mental distress. Ella and Josie her best friend attend a party and Tristan the cocky boy with the beautiful blue eyes can't stop staring at Ella. Ella's new life away from her home has her struggling to balance classes, a social life and dealing with Tristan's sly advances, trying to turn down a sorority and figure out who she is. I loved the characters Josie is fun and mishievous . Ella was more reserved , stubborn and quick to anger. Tristan was hard to figure out, he was the popular guy he always gets what he wants. But he was also deep and intelligent, I loved how the book slowly unraveled it was subtle and unpredictable. Is this a vampire book?, werewolf?, are there angels/ witches/ demons. I highly recommend you read this series to find out the answers.!
I received this book from the Lovers of Paranormal Group as a R2R
Stars: 5++
Pros: The romance between Tristan and Ella is electric. From the first time they meet your kind of rooting for him to stop the bad boy ways and do the right thing by Ella. Also the mystery behind the story incredible and at times you feel like your right there in the story with them.
Cons: THE DAMN ENDING!!! WTF!! Way to leave a woman hanging . . . But i do understand the ending, even if i don't agree with it. lol
Overall: This book blew me away! The author has a wonderful way of just giving you enough information to keep you hooked and wanting MORE! The book felt like one piece of the puzzle and i really can't wait to read the second book to put more of the puzzle together.
Characters: Tristan and Ella
Page Turner: You won't put it down!!
Series Cont: There better be!!
Recommend: If you love Beautiful Disaster and are a paranormal fan than i HIGHLY recommend this book!
I was given a copy through read it and review it for a honest review. Firstly can I say, WHY THE HECK HAVE I NOT KNOWN ABOUT THIS BOOK SERIES. Jessica I think you are one of my new favorite authors now. I think i gobbled this one up in one and purchased the rest of the series.
This is a story about Ella, your average young adult who desperately wants her freedom and to move to college. Ella has typical family dynamics which include her two brothers, parents and best friend Josie. Once at college, Ella's life changes dramatically. People are not who they portray to be and Ella realizes that she is anything BUT normal. You feel a turmoil of emotions in this book with a few laughs and a few tears. Definitely a must read, Jessica has great writing skills. Normally i skip through pages in some books but Miller kept me interested through out the book.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com
I loved loved loved this story. The dynamic between Ella and Tristan kept things very interesting and sometimes extremely frustrating. The characters were compelling and the story was woven together in a way that you do not really find out what is going on until you are full on into the book....that was not a bad thing. I forgot I was even reading a paranormal book. The ending of the book had my emotions at an all time high....I can't tell you which way my emotions were heading without giving away too many spoilers but just let me say I am starting the second book, Reborn, the minute I finish this review. I hope you enjoy the story as much as I did.
“Tristan.” I pulled his hand away and held it in front of me gently. “Last night was...” “Amazing,” he commented. “Was a onetime only thing,” I finished.
Thanks a lot! Spero di poter leggere anche il sequel.
Ok, ok I realize that I have a YA fiction addiction and should probably find a 12 step program to help me... but there's just so much good stuff out there!!
I have to be honest; I struggled with the rating for this book. For starters I didn't realize there was more than one book. When we pick our books from submissions, sometimes the information is truncated; so it's possible that it said somewhere there was more than one...I just missed it. Hey, I am one of those people who can walk into a room 15 times and completely forget why I walked into that room (until I walk out of it, of course)... but let any song from the 80's come on and I know every single word! My point is that I don't always look up the books I pick out of submissions on Amazon or Goodreads. Most of the time I just download the book and start reading.... because, let's be honest, in five minutes I am going to forget what the synopsis was anyway. So going into this book I truthfully had no idea there was more than one, once I found that out giving it a solid rating was so much easier because all of the things I was upset about would most likely be addressed in subsequent books.
I think the month of April is "Month of Secrets" for me. Every book I have read so far revolves around families keeping secrets from one another. The justifications might be different, but the end result seems to be the same.....trouble! Ella's family has been keeping a secret from her, they reason that it's to save her; but as with most secrets, not knowing could get her killed.
For most of this book we just get to know the characters. Ella and her family, Josie and her family, Tristan, Jack and on a few other minor players. It's not until you are about 60% through the book that the paranormal aspect comes into play, it is eluded to earlier, but it's not "real" until much later. There's a fine line that an author has to walk in the first book of a series. So much backstory has to be given that it's kind of hard to get right into the heart of it all from the first page; should an author do that, the reader will spend a lot of time in flashbacks getting the backstory. I think Ms. Miller does a superb job walking this line. The story stays intriguing and keeps the reader guessing, while throwing out subtle hints here and there about what's going to happen.
The characters are all well developed and most of them are likeable. Josie's mother is a bit of an odd person, she takes the term cougar to a whole different level; but she's not seen in the story too much. Ella's parents and brothers are just doing what they think is best for her, but in the end their secrets could mean her death. Josie reminds me of a lot of girls I knew in college; more interested in partying than studying and always on the lookout for the hottest guy to walk into a party. Ella is a no nonsense type girl and I like that about her; but she has a tendency to let things go instead of asking questions. That part didn't seem to fit in with her personality. Then there is Tristan... oh Tristan. He's a man-whore no doubt about it. One thing that always bugs me though is when the man-whore finds the girl he's waited his whole life for and doesn't get her right away he continues on his man-whorish ways. Don't tell me that you love me and only me and have a different girl in your bed every single night...I don't care how many needs you think you have! But that is what Tristan does; the entire time he's trying to woo Ella he's keeping a different girl in his bed every night. That behavior does stop, but still. Jack is nerdy... one of those guys that you usually root for to get the girl... but there's something weird about him. It seems he has secrets of his own.
What secret is Ella's family keeping from her? (We do find this out in this book and Tristan is the one to enlighten her) Who is committing these gruesome murders on campus? And why on earth would anyone be after Ella?
At the end of this book I had all those questions and more and literally screamed at my Kindle! I actually had to wait a day before I even contemplated writing a review because I was at a loss. While I liked the story, you just can't keep a reader hanging like that! So I did some investigating and found there are indeed two other books out there....WHEW! If you, like me, enjoy the guilty pleasure of reading YA fiction then you will like this book. There are elements of paranormal and supernatural as well.
The Wanderers is a great story for fans of young adult paranormal romance. It features a young girl reeling from the tragedy of losing her boyfriend in a car accident. She’s about to finally leave her family to head off to college across the country. She’s ready for the new start, and she knows her best friend, Josie, will be there to make it even better. When she gets there, it seems even better than she imagined at first. She ends up closer to Josie than she thought, and during their first week, she’s already been to a rocking party, met a cute boy (or several), and been invited to join a sorority. But things aren’t all peachy. That hot boy from the party isn’t the kind of guy you’d bring home to your parents, and he’s hounding her like there’s no tomorrow. And the dreams she started having after she lost Kyle in the accident? They’re back. And they’re changing. And the boy she just met is taking a leading role. Soon after that, a girl a campus is brutally murdered, and she doesn’t know who to trust.
Once I got into the story, I found I didn’t want to stop reading. There’s enough mystery to keep you wondering, and you find yourself interested in Ella and what’s going on with her. I really like Tristan as a love interest because Ella knows he’s bad for her and keeps fighting him off. The difference between his boozing and man-whoring default persona and the tender glimpses Ella gets are interesting, and enough to make you wonder if he isn’t so bad after all. And for the times when Tristan is a grade-A jerk, there’s Jack, another interesting guy. Between them and Ella and Josie and the secondary characters, and everything that is happening around them, it’s a real page-turner. It made me smile, it made me mad, it made my heart hurt, it made me laugh, it made me scared for Ella, it made me wonder what in the world was going on, and it even made me tear up. I enjoyed all the emotions The Wanderers elicited from me, and overall I thought it was a great book! The paranormal twist is an interesting one, and is done differently enough that it keeps you intrigued. I think readers will like it, as I did.
On a few critical notes… As the novel is a somewhat long one, I believe it could be tightened up a lot by removing some of the more extraneous scenes. There are several places in The Wanderers where the more mundane details of Ella’s life are chronicled. While I understand that some such scenes are good for developing characters and setting, many could be done without to give the novel a more concise, action-filled, polished feel. As for the technical aspects, I must say that The Wanderers would greatly benefit from a quick glance from an editor of any sort to catch grammar and word errors, particularly typos, missing commas and incorrect word choices. Many small errors exist that generally don’t necessarily impact the readability, but clearly make the work seem less polished. As an avid reader of fanfiction, I was not as turned off by this as some readers might be. Some may find it to be a real issue.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Wanderers and recommend it to fans of paranormal romance, particularly readers who are interested in the story of a girl going off to college and discovering that not everything she knew is as it seems. I think you’ll be entertained, as I was.
This book was obtained freely from the author, Jessica Miller, in exchange for an honest review.
I got a copy of this book through a R2R because the storyline sounded very interesting. Once the story finally got into it, there were a lot of great twists and turns that left the reader questioning what was going to happen next. I liked the suspense in this, and how it started right away with us seeing the crash through Ella's dream (which was a great way to start and show us without having us actually there) and then with Jake missing in the woods. I thought both scenes were great ways of drawing the reader in without being over the top. Seeing the accident through her dream helped drive home the fact that she wasn't over what had happened. Which is why I was a little annoyed that that part of the story sort of fell by the way side further in. I would have liked there to be more focus on Ella and her dead boyfriend. Ella herself was also really annoying, and not just her. A lot of the characters in the beginning seemed too over the top. Dean felt forced into the mold of a cliche party boy, equipped with the bad attitude (Jasa). For a rich family who really didn't want to be seen as just spoiled rich snobs, he sure managed to pull it off well. That also felt like forced information at the beginning when we hear from Ella's inner monologue that she's got money but hates being judged for it. She also goes on to saying her mom told her not to let other people's opinions both her, yet she clearly is if it annoys her when she's thought of as spoiled right off. Her father was another one that seemed forced, like he was there just to further the plot but not fully fleshed out first. The scene between him and Dean in the cabin for instance was rushed and he started yelling way to soon for it to come off as anything other than over dramatic. Another thing that bugged me was a part where she's kissing Mark and she excuses him becoming too handsy by saying he couldn't control himself. Because we're seeing all of this from first person, this isn't the type of thing she should know for a fact. That sort of behavior isn't excusable, and she just brushes it aside while telling us that he lost control. Not all of the characters where forced, there were a few that I really liked such as Josie, and of course, Tristan. Once we got further into the story where we could really see Ella's new experiences with both of these two things got better. I love the dynamics between Ella and Tristan, though she treats him pretty poorly in the beginning which again was annoying. I felt that because Josie had a bigger part, her character wasn't forced into a little box. She was given more thought and because of that ended up a well rounded character. I think that this proves that this author needs to polish this work more, but can without a doubt do it. A lot of the sentences are repetitive, and whole scenes should be either lengthened or taken out entirely. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in a good mystery however, because it definitely does keep you wondering the whole way through. I don't want to give any of the actual plot away and spoil it for anyone so I'll just leave it at that. Oh, but just as one last note, the term is actually "wives tales" not "wise tales". :) Common mistake that's easily fixed.
Ella is an 18 year old from California, getting over the death of her high school sweetheart in a tragic car accident. She's off to college in Vermont to get a fresh start with her best friend Josie as her room mate. They settle in well, even joining a sorority and making new friends and drawing the attention of 2 guys; the reserved and nerdy Jack, and the naughty frat boy Tristan who won't take no for an answer. Ella starts to fall for Tristan but it's a love/hate relationship. Ella is also plagued by nightmares that have haunted her since the accident. Then there is a murder on campus and all hell breaks loose. Ella discovers she is a half-vampire, a Wanderer, and ends up losing more loved ones as her nightmares become reality.
As soon as I finished reading this first book in the series, I emailed the author requesting the next 2 books in the series to review if she was willing because I HAD to know what was going to happen next. I went to bed, woke up in the morning and the "little beauty" had sent them to me and I've already finished the second book! (Staying up until 2am reading a few nights in a row isn't ideal, I might add!) I'm hanging to get into the third!
This is not just another teen vampire book (which I didn't actually realise it was until I reached that part of the book!). It has all the same elements as all the others but something a little more that I can't quite put my finger on. Suffice to say I found it addictive! In all honesty, it started a little slow but once it got "there", it got there! I found the main character Ella a little frustrating at times- her attitude, her temper and irrational behaviour p-ed me off a bit but admittedly, she had totally drawn the short straw with her life and she was dealing with it the way she knew best. So I cut her some slack. Tristen... *lè sigh* What a hottie! This guy has some pretty special charisma working for him. His pursuit of Ella was the most enjoyable part of the story for me. I was giggling like a school girl from his naughtiness, I LOVED it!! I'm a sucker for College life! I love the atmosphere having only experienced it in American movies. It fascinates me and sounds like so much fun! I also liked the peak into the lives of extremely privileged people.
I have to admit, there were moments in this book that reminded me of other YA paranormal books that I've read, but this one had it's own signature and has a more adult feel to it. The Wanderers has a fantastic plot with plenty of drama, comedy, romance, intrigue and action.
This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. I'm extremely appreciative!
Here's how I work a lot of the time. An author, publicist or someone asks me to review a book. I read the summary, decide I want to review it and then a few weeks later read the book. I purposely don't re-read the summary because sometimes they tell me too much about the book and I form opinions up front. So when I started The Wanderers, I had no idea what it was about (I can't seem to remember yesterday, but if When Doves Cry by Prince comes on the radio I can sing every word). And I liked not knowing. I went into the book with a clean slate and excited.
The Wanderers did not disappoint. I was hooked from the first page. Ella enticed me. She's a nice girl, she's been through a rough time and she just wants to start over at college. But there is a family secret and that leads to the start of the buildup of tension in the story. Then there is college, Ella's best friend Josie who is interesting and Jack and Tristan. I liked Jack okay, I had a friend like him in college. But I loved Tristan. Loved the love-hate relationship Ella had with him. Even with his faults I knew he had a good heart.
There is a lot of back and forth and Ella could seem wishy-washy at times, but I really didn't feel that she was. She really was trying to work out her feelings for Tristan, a known playboy which she didn't like yet she was attracted to him. And Ella is the girl that can make a bad boy into a great man for one woman. So the love/attraction part of the story is quite intriguing. But that's not all there is to this book. I'm not giving any spoilers, but let's say the book did not lack action. I found it exciting the whole way through. The tension built well and though everything happens fast at the end, I never felt like it was rushed. The pacing of the book was great, it hooked me and kept me enthralled until the very end.
The paranormal element is great and well-done. I'm still not sure whether to classify this as New Adult or not, it's not YA because they are in college, but while there is some grittiness to the book, it's not as gritty as what I consider New Adult, but then again I think the true definition of the genre (kids in their late teens, early twenties trying to find themselves and their way in the world) then this does qualify. Ella, Josie, Jack are all somewhat typical kids in their late teens feeling their way through the college scene, dating and just making up their minds (or not) about life. So it does work.
Overall this book is stellar and I was so glad the author allowed me to read this and had Reborn (The Wanderers #2) also ready for me to review so I could jump right into reading it. So I'm reading it now, look for it's review next week. But if it's anything like The Wanderers, I'm in for another fun ride that will keep me up late at night to see what will happen next!
[I was given a digital edition for free from the author, in exchange for an honest review]
The book focuses on the life of eighteen year old Ella and how she discovers the true origins of her family. First chapter offers a small glimpse at the mystery that will be slowly unraveled through the pages of the novel. Ella lost her boyfriend in a car accident and since then she’s been having nightmares about the strange yellow eyed man who tried to kill her that night and the anonymous person who saved her. After this incident, her parents become overprotective and thus she feels suffocated by all their care and attention. She is looking forward to going to college with her best friend Josie to get away from them and her two older brothers.
While there are some aspects that I did not enjoy and I will elaborate below, the book was a great read, with amusing expressions and moments. The author’s writing feels natural and I found myself enjoying the witty dialogues between the characters. Despite the slow progress of the plot, I got caught up in the pages and did not want to put it down till the last word!
One of the things that I did not enjoy is the difficult way in which the story unfolds. We are overloaded with irrelevant actions or dialogues and because of it the book is longer than needed. Also, there are moments when one may think: “Ok, now she finds out” but nothing happens. It becomes frustrating by the end.
From characters point of view, Ella is close to the typical teenager who wants her independence. What I did like about her was the fact that she was neither too good nor was she too rebellious. She had a little bit of everything. What I did not like was the fact that she never asked questions or she never waited for an explanation. For example, she overhears one of her brothers arguing with their father about the decision of not telling her the truth, but she does not try to find out what was that all about.
Ella’s friend Josie is the party type girl, always wanting to have fun. Her actions have an important role in shaping Ella’s love life. As for Tristan and Jack, the two boys fighting for Ella, I can say they were very nicely presented in the book. Even though Tristan was asking for forgiveness too much, his personality brought so much light and charm to the story.
I believe that the book needs a little bit of editing as well, as there were some grammar mistakes and repeated words. But then again, I probably had a draft version.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and since the ending left me wanting for more, I will for sure read the next books in this series. This was a fun read, with a story that keeps you hanging till the end, I would like to thank Jessica Miller for the opportunity and congratulate her for this great book!

**** 4.5 Stars ****
The Wanderers an addicting Ya Paranormal read. When I started reading this book, I didn’t realize that it was a start of a whole series. So now I will have to clear my schedule and get to reading the rest of the series like now.
This book started with a heartbreaking tragedy, with main character Ella loses her lovable boyfriend from a car crash. An accident that left her broken for a while, until she met handsome smart Alec Tristan. He was everything she never wanted, but everything she needed. Tristan was outgoing, smart, obnoxious, jokester and the biggest manwhore flirt she had ever known. She tried the stay clear of him, but every time he was around, she felt a pull to him that she couldn’t understand or ignore. The more she tried to run from Tristan the more he was persistent and he worked hard at breaking down every wall she had put up. Tristan knew it was just a matter of time, before he gets Ella all to himself. Is he right? Read and find out.
This story is about love, but more about Ella finding herself. On her way to finding the girl she lost, she finds more than she bargained for. With the help of Tristan, her best friend Josie and family, she faces her new life she never knew existed. But with dangers lurking around and glowing yellow eyes getting closer to her, will she lose herself? or find a way to save herself and her love ones?
This book was a fun, exciting and full of adventure with a touch of love. Tristan was a fun character, that you will have a love and hate relationship with. He is full of himself, but has a heart and eyes only for Ella. This book will touch your heart, make you laugh out love, will make you angry and excited before the book ends. Be warned that this book ends on a cliffhanger, that will make you want book 2 as soon as you possibly can. A great read and a real surprise hit to me. Love it.
Ella starts college as a normal girl, hoping to have a good time with her best friend Josie. Being normal doesn’t last long when she learns her family has been keeping deadly secrets from her. She’s in danger and doesn’t even realise it as she’s been kept in the dark. Ella needs to learn who she can trust and who’s the bad guy before she gets herself killed.
The Wanderers was so unexpected. After reading the synopsis I always play the guessing game, most of the time I get some bits right but not with this one, it took me completely by surprise, and what a nice surprise it was.
The storyline was great, full of friendship, partying, lying, anger, love, fighting, murder and surprises. It had a bit of everything and I really enjoyed it. It kept me in it’s claws the whole way and I was sad to see it end. Jessica’s writing is great, she kept me on the edge of my seat, iPad glued to hand unable to put it down until I’d finished it.
I feel sorry for Ella, it seems everyone knows who and what she is besides her. And then to learn the truth and how deep the lies were, it must have been devastating. But she took it well, she stayed strong and made the best of it. Not all of her decisions were great though and it just added more excitement.
Tristan annoyed me pretty much the whole way through, but I liked him at the same time. One second I wanted to strangle him and the next he was making me giggle like a school girl. In the end though I loved him, the length he showed he’d go to for Ella made me all teary eyed. He’s another one though that made some really crappy decisions, and the outcome was heartbreaking.
I’m not even going to get into the bad guys because knowing me I’ll say something and give it away without meaning to. All I would like to say to them is you stupid, lying farts! :/ grrrr…. I was so angry when I got to the end, just how can it finish there? I wanted to scream and probably would have if I didn’t already have Reborn, book 2 in the series.
Oh. My. God. I am speechless. Literally speechless. I was completely shocked at how much I LOVED this book. The Wanderers was NOTHING what I expected it to be, in an awesome way. I can't say why without ruining the best part of the book, but there were a number of twists that I NEVER saw coming. I was invested in the story within a few pages and it just kept getting better and better as I kept reading.
Ella was a typical teenage girl, eager to get out from under her overprotective parents and start the next phase in her life. She was headed off to college and her best friend Josie (Who I LOVE) was coming with her...how perfect! She immediately began making new friends, and even joined a sorority (after incessant begging from Josie). And of course she met a few boys!
Tristan was the typical player frat boy who is unimaginably gorgeous. He is also cocky and knows EXACTLY just how beautiful he is. Ella wants to hate him in the worst way possible, but she just can’t deny the chemistry between them. She can instantly sense when he is around before she even sees him, because every time he shows up her stomach flips upside down and her whole body tingles. She has never felt this way and it gets the best of her. I don't blame her though, even my feelings towards Tristan kept flopping around. I loved him one second and despised him the next, but by the end of the book I was completely sure of my feelings for him.
Then there is Jack. The cute nerdy boy who lives in her hall. He is super sweet and a great friend. He has made it known he has feelings for Ella. She knows he is the smarter, safer choice, and he would treat her like gold. Ella is very conflicted, her head and her heart just can’t agree. She tries to follow her head and starts dating Jack...but the devil on her shoulder just won’t let her forget about Tristan...
When things start to go wrong and her past catches up to her, who will be the one to save Ella in the end? Will it be party boy Tristan, or dependable sweet Jack??
I received this book direct from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The Wanderers! WOW!
This is certainly a gripping book that has you on the edge of your seat just dyeing to know what is going to happen next. I could not put this book down. However to begin with I was like ok... where is the wow factor??? Chapter one - two - three > I was like okay this is all right But! Then suddenly it wooed me! and i loved it...
This is not your normal vampire series. It's nice to have a different take on vampires. So no there is not really any love triangle, there is no girl meets boy, boy meets girl, girl is just normal, boy is vampire ruled by her potent blood and just has to know her! NO NO NO! This is something entirely different! A Must read!
I certainly don't want to give to much away so i'm going to keep it to a minimum.
Ella is an amazing character, she is so grown up for her age. But she still has a little naivety which I liked. She tries so hard to do the right thing. She for me is a loveable character.
Tristen Well......... I Love Him!!! I'm married but boy would I love to play cowboys and indians with him!!! He is a hot sexy witty half-breed with enough sexy hotness to make us quiver! He is a fab character with so much charisma and oomph, he makes you smile laugh and feel all hot and bothered.
Jack boy did I not see that coming! I was like WHAT!!! That was a pleasant / unpleasant surprise! He is a great character although the story would not be the same without him.
Josie I loved her outgoing bubbly attitude, she makes you exasperated at her sudden silly antics, but smile at her witty attitude. She is fun and loveable.
O.M.G The ending you are going to need some tissues! What a cliff hanger. But i'm literally bouncing up and down in my seat to get me book mitts on the next book in the series.
100% recommend this book fantastic witty story with a lovely romance! Written very well!
I first want to say a HUGE thank you to Jessica Miller for allowing me to read and review her book. I have to say I love Paranormal books but I also love books that have a message and in this book the message is that no matter what happens in life as long as you have true friends you can make it.
Ella is excited to be starting college. She has had a rough year. The death of her boyfriend Kyle in a car accident. Then her dreams she has been having. So Ella is excited that her and her best friend Josie are starting college. Once she arrives at college and starts to settle in she goes to parties and has a new life. She is enjoying herself at one of these parties when she meets a guy and they start talking. Josie is excited for Ella that she has found someone she likes after what happened to Kyle. Tristan means something to Ella but she keeps getting this weird feeling like something is off about him. Plus she keeps having her dreams and now instead of Kyle she is dreaming about Tristan. Then things get weird at the college campus when one her classmates is murdered. Her dreams mean something and she better figure them out fast in order to help her classmates and figure out what is going on. Then Ella finds out that her family has been hiding things from her and keeping secrets that can destroy their family. When Ella finds out what she must do she is devastated but she knows she has to make a choice and a decision. If matters were not bad enough she has a semi love triangle at hand. What is a girl to do with all these secrets and lies and love triangle?
This is a must read and I need book two like ASAP!
This is a New Adult novel about family secrets, who to trust, betrayal, and love. I started reading and could not put it down. I enjoyed it so much. The characters in the story I was able to connect with when I'm able to put myself in the book with the characters that is a plus. The only thing that I would have to say about this book is for me it dragged the whole time until towards the end. It wasn't a bad thing but I felt that some of the things that was going on could have been reveled not to early but earlier than it did.
Ella is a strong character. She has experience a broken heart with the death of her boyfriend. She had to go through a lot of therapy and medication to get better. What she doesn't tell her parents is that she has been having the recurring dreams that haunt her. Afraid that if she tells them she will have to go through the whole process of therapy and medication again. To get over and try to start on a fresh new start she goes to a different state for college with her best friend. There she meets Tristan.
Tristan is the playboy of the school and every girl wants him. When he set his sights on Ella there was nothing that was going to stop him from getting her even if it took more that a few of his famous pick up lines. Underneath all that charade he deeply loves Ella and would die to protect her.
I don't want to give to much away because I don't want to spoil it for you. Overall this is a really good book and I enjoyed reading it.
The book follows a troubled girl names Ella who is just looking to move past the tragedy in her life. She wants to go to college and start new, but the past will always come back.
She's faced with the harsh reality that the person in her nightmares is true and soon she'll have to deal with him.
I truly liked Ella's character. In the beginning of course I felt her broken and weak, but you could easily see her growing as the book went along. There was no defining moment, but you just got that sense of Ella growing up. What made Ella's character for me was her interaction with her best friend Josie. It never fails that opposites attract and these two are the perfect example.
Of course once at college Ella meets a boy names Tristian and it seems the rest of the book really is about Ella trying to figure out Tristian and Tristian trying to prove himself to Ella.
I read the description of the book and was so excited for the book. While reading the book though I kept on thinking, okay get to the point already. I felt like it was dragged out and kept pulling me along. Then when they finally got to the good parts, the book ended and most likely will continue in book two. I guess that's just more of me not realizing this was book one. I thought the general flow of the book was well written, and I really could relate to Ella. My favorite part in the book was when Ella first met Tristian and she walked into a street post. I kid you not I feel like this is something I could easily relate to and do in real life, my only difference is I would be completely sober!
The Wanderers is a gripping paranormal that leaves you yearning for more.
After the tragic death of her boyfriend, Ella longs to get far away from her family and the constant reminders that engulf her. She also hopes to escape the haunting dreams and the nervous feeling she has that someone is always watching her. Selecting a college in Vermont, thousands of miles from her home in California, Ella is eager for a fresh start. Finally, the nightmares have subsided and besides the obnoxious self absorbed guy, that despite her best efforts, she seems to be falling for her life is falling into place. But, all that is about to change. After one of her fellow students is murdered, Ella begins to realize things aren't quite what they seem. Will Ella discover the truth before it's too late?
The Wanderers is an intense supernatural ride with mysterious secrets and eerie characters that lurk in the shadows. One of the first things Ella notices when meeting new people are their eyes. The author uses this to cleverly create fear in readers by describing them as glowing, deep, and penetrating and always watching. The story is fast paced and riddled with one surprise after another. I recommend picking up a copy.
Starting off the summer watching her boyfriend burn to death in a car accident was not something Ella would have wished on anyone. Trying to continue with her life she and her best friend prepair for college on the east coast. What she wasn't expecting was the magnetic connection she felt for Tristan, a bigger playboy than even her brother. She wants to hate him but when he opens up there's just something about him she can't ignore.
But with dreams that are more like nightmares and brutal murders happening on campus things are crazy enough for Ella. Until she finds out the family secret.
Ella is a bit too juvinile for my liking but she did grow throughout the story. It's the first time she's ever had the chance to spread her wings and she's trying to figure out just who she is.
Tristian had his moments. They were few a far between but those were the times I liked him best. The constant man whoring detracted allot from him espically when you could see how much he wanted Ella.
It was past the 60% mark when you finally got to see the more paranormal side of things and once there everything seemed to go fast. The was an interesting new world and now that Ella knows about it I'm excited to see and know more from her perspective. Good starting point to a new series.
The Wanderers is a Major MUST READ!!!!!! The YA novel is amazing. It was filled with romance and suspense and some humor. What made me fall in love with this book was the way the characters specifically lead characters Ella and Tristan acted. Normally the lead female character gets mad at the lead male she gets over it quickly and lets everything go because the male is so dreamy. This was not Ella, she stuck to her convictions and held out. Tristan for the most part had to really work for her forgiveness, not always but at the critical points she definitely made him work for it. At times I actually felt bad for Tristan, which is shocking seeing as with most books I am yelling at the book saying what is wrong with you don't forgive him so quickly and easily just cause he smiles at you. I also loved Tristan while at times I had to just shake my head at his behavior I knew he was still a good guy who cared for Ella. I also loved his personality and how he annoyed Ella and made her laugh. Jessica Miller created two characters that I actually fell in love with both of them. I cannot wait to read the second book to find out what happened. I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I received a digital copy of this book for a honest review. Thank you so much l to author Jessica Miller.
At first I wasn't so sure about this book, but the author and character Ella quickly won me over. Although I will say that Ella did aggravate me quite a few times during the book. She was very very dramatic. One minute she was hot, then the next minute she was cold. At the beginning of the book she seemed very adult...more so than Josie, but as the story went on she seemed to regress. Her attitude toward Tristan bugged me. She hated him even before she knew him. Then she lusted after him, but was angry with him because she was starting to have feelings for him. And she wouldn't give him an inch. Lol that was funny though. She really didn't cut him any slack, was a bitch about, but yet he still loved her. One thing I didn't really understand...when she caught Tristan in bed with the two other girls, she didn't react. But then like 20 or so pages later, she blew up on him. Why the delayed reaction? It just didn't make sense to me. The twists and turns of the book were great. I honestly never knew what was coming. It kept me guessing and constantly reading. I'm so very anxious for the next installment to figure out where the story will take Ella.
This book was a solid ‘like’ or 3 stars for me. Ella is the main character who unbeknownst to her is ½ vampire. I won’t give away all the things that happen to her but the book kept me interested and wanting to keep reading to see what happened next. Even though the book focuses on the events that happen to Ella, I got a great sense of her family and really enjoyed the multiple characters in the books. You know how a minor character that really should BE more in a book, but are flat – I felt that a lot of the supportive characters could hold their own in a possible spin off.
Some things I could of used less of where the longer than necessary back and forth between her and Tristan. I liked the tension, and get that both Tristan and Ella are strong personalities . . .but if just felt longer than necessary. Also, I am generally not a fan of cliff hangers and this one definitely had that. The saving grace is the next two books are out already. Overall, I’d recommend this book to a friend who likes YA paranormal already, but not to a first time reader of the genre.
Disclaimer: I was given this book in exchange for an honest review from Lovers of Paranormal (LOP).
The concept of a topic often written about, is different from the ones I have read to date. I don't like to give away spoilers and let people discover the secrets of this book on their own.
Jessica does a thorough job developing her lead character Ella, Tristan and Josie. Most of the book is really focused on developing the characters, not as much scenery and some plot. Josie and Tristan are both rather straight forward, however Ella I struggle with a little bit. She makes one bad decision after the other and I just don't get that. I just want to shake her to make her come to her senses, but to no avail.
The plot is a little slow. Since most of the focus is on developing the characters, the plot itself drags on for quite some time in my eyes. Finally towards the end of this one, the book becomes more interesting. This one ends on a rather sad note, again no spoilers.
I like the concept of this book and will continue reading this series.
I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal).
