The Devil You Know

Rate this book
SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE.

Following a drunken night together, the vampire Michael “Vegas” Tremayne takes off with no explanation, leaving Deziree Davanzati to wonder if they’d made a terrible mistake. Rather than obsess about it, Dez spends most of her time at Onyx, the rock club she owns and operates for the supernatural citizens of New York City. All are welcome-werewolves, witches, and anyone else willing to play nice while under her roof and pay their tab at the end of the night.

After two weeks of radio silence, Vegas returns with alarming news. For the first time in more than four centuries, there is reason to believe a pureblood demon is walking among them. They suspect someone from the Council may be behind the creature’s return, but to what end?

With the Sentinel Stone missing, they’re down to the wire and don’t know who to trust. Will Dez and Vegas stop the demon in time? Or will Hell itself be unleashed upon the world?

I was lucky enough to be able to read TDYK early and often and I fell in love with Vegas. This man is beyond sexy, delicious and edible. First off, if you haven't read Burning, which is the prequel to TDYK, get it on amazon and devour it.

Lucas is a sexy beast as well and he plays into TDYK in some amazing ways. Dez is demon/human hybrid and that is not something you see everyday. Her BFF is the hottie vampire (man, I love sexy vamps!) Vegas. Even though both are tempted for more, they have restrained up until now. Afterwards, Vegas disappears and Dez is hurt and bewildered. When he shows up to tell her the end of the world is coming and coming quick, Dez knows things are about to go all kinds of crazy. She isn't wrong. When they join the coven of witches and the woman that raised Dez, they are informed that demons have found a way out of hell.

I loved following these characters all over the world as they race to save it. I see how Lucas grows from a playboy to a savior. I see the love that develops deeper between Dez and Vegas. When the truth of what is coming is discovered, it is make or break time and I am stunned at the selflessness that steps up to save them all. This book is everything I look for in a book. Romance, paranormal, suspense, tragedy, and salvation are all found in the pages of this book. Does it get any better?

ARC REVIEW

Hellfire #1, Formerly published in 2013 as the Demon Legacy series Jena Gregoire has revised and re-released her series. I loved the characters, I loved the plot and where she went with it but what got me was I needed more world building; a little bit more descriptive information on this paranormal world and a bit more history with the covens. You are just kind of thrown into it and there is little explanation as to why; why the vampires and the witches are in the covens together, and some more character history. We know Dez and Vegas met four hundred years ago and have been friends ever since but I miss the sexual tension to the lead up to a relationship, I love that awkward and in this case drunken fumbling when the switch gets flipped from friend to lover. I did enjoy the fact that once they realized how much they meant to each other, that was it; and how early it was in the book. Everyone else in the book is like It's about time you two realized it, very amusing. I loved Lucas, he's a great comic relief and I sometimes have a hard time liking manwhores, but by this point in the story he's already over it and reformed.

A murdered records keeper is discovered the only thing missing is a list, quickly following her death is the death of several others all over the world. The risk is that the demon doing the killing is looking for a key, the key to open a portal to release all the demons. Dez, Vegas, and his brother Lucas are trying to find out who's behind the it and try to stop them. Dez, half demon half human, has realized her demon half has just been lying dormant her whole life and the exposure this demon has brought out her powers. But even with her new found powers they are still one step behind the demon and time is running out and the window to open the portal is coming.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the characters and the plot well enough to want to read more. But I just wish there was more to it.

I enjoyed this one! Plenty of sexy romance and action with a dash of snarky dialogue. I love a snarky heroine, don't you?

**A big thank you to J.M. Gregoire for providing me with this copy!**
I was in no way compensated for this review. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After reading the prequel, Burning, I had high hopes for this book. I was very impressed with the short prequel. But, unfortunately, The Devil You Know fell short of my expectations. I found the prequel was more captivating and more interesting to me than this story. I absolutely hate, hate, hate to give review copies negative reviews, but unfortunately it seems as though this is going to be one of those dreaded times.

I thought the story as a whole felt incomplete. It was very short (148 pages) and a lot of things could have been expanded upon. The character development wasn't up to par. I don't feel like I really got to know Dez or Michael as well as I should have. I also thought the world-building wasn't done as well as it should have been. It left me with a bunch of questions. With all the types of fantastical creatures co-existing together, it would have been nice to have more of an explanation about this world. For example, in this story, the demons seem to be bad/evil, while vampires and half-demons seem to be good. But, is that only a rare case of them? Or are all vampires and half-demons good and go after the evil demons? I have no clue. The story definitely could have benefited from more explanation of this aspect.

Both main characters, Dez and Michael are extremely gorgeous and your stereo typical "hot" paranormal main characters. Of course. That's just boring to me. I want my characters to be imperfect and original. But, that's just my opinion. I'm sure that a lot of readers like their main characters to be dreamed up this way.

The writing was immature and weak. But, Gregoire is just getting started, so I'm sure she will improve as time goes on. (Though, it's weird that I didn't notice this being an issue in Burning). The story-telling wasn't able to pull me into the story or captivate me. Honestly, I was quite bored with the story as a whole and even skimmed parts. Even the big fight scene at the end, that the whole story was leading up to, seemed like it was cut short; I found it to be very dull and it left me disappointed. Oh, and there were also several errors that weren't caught and corrected through the proofreading/editing process.

Random thought about a part in the story: I thought it was weird how Dez decides that they need to hold off on sleeping together after their first slip sleeping together, because she felt it was rushing into things and they needed to build on their relationship before going that far again. That's all fine and dandy, BUT they've already been friends for OVER 4 CENTURIES! What more does she want? They already know each other, so it's not like they "need to get to know each other". I don't know; I just found that to be odd reasoning. He quickly agreed to her reasoning, also.

Let me begin by saying, if you haven't read the prequel, Burning, then I encourage you to go out right and do so. Not that The Devil You know can't be read as a stand alone, but, come on, it's a series so it should behoove you to read it in sequence, right!?!

Anyway, I was one of the fortunate few who received an ARC of The Devil You Know from Ms. Gregoire herself. I have been following the progression of her writing career for the past year now and I have to say I am so proud of all that she has accomplished. With that, I admit, I was going to be super bummed if I didn't like the book. However, I wasn't too concerned being that I thoroughly enjoyed Burning.

It was only with the mildest of trepidation that I open up to the first page of The Devil You know and was instantly whisked away. I believe I read the book in 3 hours. In that span of time I took 1 pee break, and made myself a cup of tea. So yeah, I guess you could say HECKS YEAH! I LOVED IT!

The Devil You Know reads like a paranormal, romance, crime novel on speed. Literally bouncing the reader all over the map. It has the style of those old school detective serials that would appear in magazines or perhaps broadcast over the radio in the 50's. It's sort of a style of it's own, and that is the best way I can describe the flow of The Devil You know. It's a hard style to do well as the author must constantly keep the reader on their toes and in a state of suspense, all while providing sub-plots, characters, character development, relationship development, and not to mention the difficult task of giving it cohesion so it all sticks together. With shorter quick paced novels you still have to have your audience care about the characters. You don't have the luxury to drone on and on about how they felt ways about stuff just so you can give them depth. My point being, every word and action the author creates with this type of work is critical. And oh, man, you better believe my girl delivered! Squeee!!!! Happy dance!

When I opened up to the first page I was curious how the new characters Dez, and Vegas, were going to fit into this world Ms. Gregoire created in Burning. I immediately liked their friendship/working relationship, and enjoyed the banter between the two as it was obvious the tension was defiantly there. As the story unfolds we find the link between the two books and new characters, and that's when the party begins as the story is thrown into fifth gear. With a character pool of Vampires, Human-demon hybrids, Demons, and Witches, you better believe it's fun ride. And just when you think you're at the end and there is going to be a nice little wrap up to this adventure - the rug is violently ripped out from under you and you fall smack-dab on your butt. I swear I could hear Ms. Gregoire maniacal laughter as I read the phase,...To be continued.

What!?! No!!!
Sigh,.. I guess I will have to patiently pine away for the next installment of this series.

If you're into Paranormal, urban fantasy, crime romance then check out The Devil You Know. And keep a close eye on J.M. Gregoire. She is defiantly a new author to keep tabs on.

I give The Devil You Know 5 Stars!

In The Devil You Know(TDYK) we meet: Deziree "Dez" Davanzatti a half demon, half human hybrid; who comes across as smart and sassy. Michael "Vegas" Tremayne a vampire; who comes across as being sexy as hell!

The two have been friends forever(at least 400 years). After a drunken night together, Dez wakes up to find Vegas gone. No note, nothing. Dez wonders if they made a mistake by giving into their desires, and if she lost her best friend because of it.

Time passes, 2 weeks to be exact before Vegas shows up again. And he doesn't return with good news either! The news that Vegas has could possibly change or destroy the world as they know it. Things only get worse when Dez and Vegas realise that it may just be someone they know that is behind it.

Lucus Tremayne (Vegas's brother) shows up and reveals that the events that have already happened have had repercussions on him too.

The 3 of them set off on a worldwide quest for a full blood demon. Can they stop him before its too late?

I loved this book. I found myself immersed in the world of Dez and Vegas. On more that one occasion I felt like I was standing alongside them and could visualise the scenes unfolding before me. I would recommend reading the prequel Burning first; its not essential, which was included in the copy I received.

TDYK is like a faced paced mystery/action adventure/supernatural romance all within its covers. its about friendship, love, commitment and betrayal. I think that TDYK is a great start to the series.

J.M. Gregoire has written this book really well, I love the way her characters has been described and developed throughout the book. The descriptions of the places within the story are enough to allow you to be able to picture them in your mind.

There is no doubt that I will be reading more of J.M. Gregoire's books in the future. Go on give it a read!

Okay, I will give a disclaimer before I start: the author is my partner in crime/travel buddy/sounding board/BFF. However, please don't let that fool you into thinking I'd give a GOOD review just for that fact alone. I wouldn't. And, it was precisely that fact that kept me from reading the book for YEARS. Yes, years....it was released THREE years ago. I was SCARED to read "The Devil You Know" because WHAT IF I DIDN'T LIKE IT??? How could I tell my BFF "Hey, I thought your book sucked."??? It's not like "Oh, that outfit isn't working for you, go change real quick". Anyways...

I reluctantly started reading TDYK, as it was staring at me everytime I turned on my kindle. I started off with trepidation, fully aware of the author. Somewhere along the way, I COMPLETELY forgot about WHO wrote it and was anxiously turning the pages!

Vampires, demons, and sex? Yes, please! Dez (which I'm glad she has a nicname, as I think STRIPPER when I hear the name "Deziree" and I wouldn't be able to take Dez seriously as the badass she is while envisioning her twirling around a pole with tassels on her nipples.) is my hero and I basically want to be her. I'm off to go see what happens next, in "Suffering"! And while J.M. Gregoire is still a newbie author, she is off to a fantastic start and I can't wait to see her writing career skyrocket!

The Devil You Know is the first book in the Demon Legacy series by J. M. Gregoire. Deziree Davanzatti, also called Dez, is a thief by trade but keeps herself occupied at a club she owns in New York City called Onyx. Dez in not an ordinary woman she is a demon-human hybrid. She has a good heart tries not to acknowledge the demon half unless she has too. While she has feeling for Michael she seems not want to ruin their friendship by admitting she is in love with him unless she has too.

Michael Tremayne, also called Vegas, is a vampire. He has had feeling for Dez for a while but has not pushed the issue in the four hundred years they have known each other. He seems to be waiting for Dez to make the first move.

The chemistry between Vages and Dez is explosive. It’s apparent that they trust each other in a way they don’t for anyone else. Also I liked that it seemed that everyone around them has been waiting for them to act on their feelings for each other.

I really liked that this was a different take from the usual vampire novel that I have read in the past. I also like that the author did not focus on Michael and him being a vampire and how he feeds, fights, ect. Ms. Gregoire focused on Vegas and Dez as people with extra abilities. Overall, I am hooked on this series. I can’t wait to read the next book.

After years of unrelenting desire for one another, Michael and Deziree consider taking their relationship to the next level. With news of a full-blooded demon on the loose, however, they have to put their personal plans aside and embark on a dangerous mission. With the help of Michael’s brother, Lucas, and covens from across the globe, they search for answers in the hopes of stopping the horrible creature.
Lucas has a score to settle and though his heart is breaking, it fuels his need for vengeance. As each clue they find brings back haunting memories of a tragic scene, he finds solace in the happiness his brother has found. Supporting Michael and Dez in every way possible, he finds it impossible to get past the loss of his one true love.

This was an excellent novel that satisfied the hunger I had after its prequel, Burning, while still leaving room for more. The characters are creative, unique, and alluring. Michael and Dez make an amazing combination and Lucas is a loveable character. This story was well paced, full of intrigue, the paranormal, and a little bit of romance. The ending resonated with such an unforgettable tone of tragedy, I was stunned. The complexity and individuality of this novel makes it well worth your time!

I think maybe I read too much because some things I just see coming. However, it didn't change how much I liked the book, I really enjoyed it. Some things I think the author could improve on (great characterization doesn't need to be limited to the leads). As to knowing the "who" of it all, I think the biggest clue to it is the title. Given who the main character is and the whole situation, little possibility remains. I do know the author has said she purposefully put the clues there, so to the people who say it's out of nowhere, I'm just as curious how you didn't have an inkling.
I am confused about the end (no, I don't need every bit explained, I rather like having questions), only because I am not sure how that action had the reaction on Dez that it did. But I know we'll find out, and I'm looking forward to it.
I do recommend reading Burning before this (in my kindle copy it's included, which would have been good to know before downloading it separately before, but whatever ;) not a big deal). Burning is the story of Lucas and Natalia, and the events that set up this story. If you want to know more about Lucas, definitely read Burning. Then read this because you should!!

The Devil You Know by J.M. Gregoire is truly an entertaining read. The characters are multidimensional, sarcastic and deeply-flawed. They are, therefore, believable, despite their supernatural origins. The plot was sound, having its palpable devices and despicable villains.

Evil and good are clearly defined and the reader delights in the boundaries which have, for so long, defined fiction. As a reader, I love bread-crumbs, the scrumptious, elaborate details that lead readers down
literary paths. They allow us to guess and guessing is always half the fun--in life, reading and pretending. Bread-crumbs keep me going and this book has them in spades.

The Devil You Know feeds the reader, and at the book's conclusion, will leave him or her wanting more.

After a very very drunken night, vampire Michael 'Vegas' and half-demon half-witch Dez finally got into each others pants... only with Michael taking of in the quiet of the night without a word.
When he does eventually return, the news he brings is dire indeed. There is reason to believe a pureblood demon walks the earth again. Which would not have been possible since the gateway was closed centuries ago, the Sentinel Stone the key to keeping it shut.
When the Guardians of said Sentinel Stone end up dead, it's time to get moving. But how did the demon get here again? It needed to have been summoned, but by whom?
As Vegas, Dez and Lucas go about their search for answers, they might have come across more then they have bargained for.

My take on the book:

Right of the bat I'm going to say I would recommend reading the short prequel Burning before, since it sets the stage, introduces some characters and in my opinion hit the spot.

That said... I loved the book :)

World building was good, it's our world but with all manner of supes in it (vampires, witches, shifters, demons, ...). The author manages to describe the environment, scenes and conversations very well. You felt you were there with the cast.

Character building was good. Each character had their own problems, not limitations per se, but a moral compass if you will. We got some background info on our cast, might have been good for a bit more here and there, but this didn't hold back the story. Look forward to delve more into that in the next book!

Pacing and flow were excellent. It grabbed and held your attention without flinging you from one action scene into the next. We got downtime in between, focussing a lot on Dez which was well done.

The story in itself was well written and I found no (noticeable) errors. And yes, there is sex in this book (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I enjoyed it a lot. The plot is sound, the writing is good and the characters are well fleshed out. Looking forward to the next instalment!

This is an OK start to a series, but I wanted to like the book more than I really did. I liked the storyline and the suspense with a couple twists in the end were good, and also the book didn’t necessarily end on a cliffhanger, but it did propel the story forward. My biggest issue was the characters and the romance. I never felt attached to any of them, and I never felt the connection between Michael and Dez. This is written almost as a young adult, but because of doing that, part of the romantic connection between Michael and Dez is lost. Also, I would have like to have a better understanding of this world.

There is a good amount of action and some bantering that is fun, but there were also a lot of places I felt like skipping or skimming over. My favorite character is Dez, but since this was a romance that was one that started right in the beginning with nothing leading up to it (the first 300 or so years the reader is not witness to their partnership stopping supernatural crime), then I don’t care if Michael shows up again or not. The storyline is enough that I will probably move on and read the next in the series. 3.5 Stars

The end of the world is near

A full blooded demon is loose on Earth, he is seeking the way to open the portal to hell. If he succeeds, then demons will overrun the world and humanity will be at risk. The portal to hell was sealed centuries ago with the combined magical power of the witches and vampires. How did the demon get out? Who is responsible for summoning him? A half-demon witch and her vampire friends are the only ones who can find the demon and possibly stop him. Will they be in time?

great potential, but falls short

The storyline is interesting, and there are almost no grammar or spelling errors. Unfortunately, there’s also no character development, no depth to any of the characters, and little elaboration on any part of the story. This book would have been good if the same story were told over three or four times as many pages. It’s the book equivalent of a skeleton that should have been fattened up A LOT before publishing. The end was also predictable and the villain’s motive was so thin it was laughable.

Thppppt.

When you start the novel trying to justify how a "muscular" woman can be sexy.. I have to wonder if the person even a fleeting understanding of how estrogen affects muscle development.. and even if a woman was built like Arnold Schwarzenegger, she could still be sexy with no justification needed.

This ended in my DNF pile very quickly.

I liked this despite the romance

Yeah. It's a paranormal ROMANCE. I knew that, but I'd seen some of her stuff before, and it transcended the 'lust after each other's bodies' trope

Interesting story. Good writing. Characters I want to get to know better.

This was sort of ok, but I paused at about 85% and realized I really didn't care about the characters or how the plot turned out. Waste of time. And the whole idea that they were friends for centuries and just didn't find a time where the sex and/or romance felt right? Oh, FFS...

I came across one of her books and it sounded really good so I bought it. As soon as I finished it I had to go buy the other 2 books in the series. Then I seen she had another one and had to buy that one too. Really enjoyable characters. It's nice to find another author to like.

Not a book I would normally read, but this paranormal adventure grabs you early and you aren’t released until the last page. I will read the next, but know since there is a next one, it’s only over for now.

Mike and Dez, vampire and half-demon, are just pursuing a relationship together after a long period of friendship; confronting the fear that everything may irrevocably change between them.

But a far greater fear is stalking the world – a demon has managed to breach the barrier between worlds and seeks the stone that will allow him to open the doors wide and bring his forces across the great divide. Mike and Dez, joined by Mike’s heart broken brother, Lucas and backed by the council of witch and vampire covens race to catch the demon and stop him before it’s too late.

First of all, this book is a short story/novella start to a new series and, I have to say, I don’t think that’s a good idea.

The first book in a series is your hook, your bait. It’s the tasty morsel of joy you hang in front of me that lures me into the series and makes me look for book 2. It has to drag me in, it has to get me invested in the series and want to see the story continue.

Which means it has to develop some decent characters. It has to showcase a brand new world. It has to show off your writing style to the best possible extent. It has to establish a story, both interesting enough to make this book good and with sufficient points left open to make the next book necessary so I have a reason to stay with the series

All of that is a tall order in a full length book. In a novella it’s nearly impossible.

And I don’t think this book really achieved any of these.

The world has vampire, witches and demons. The witches and vampires are organised into covens and the demons want to do bad things because, well, they’re demons, it’s what they do. And that’s kind of it. I don’t know the why of anything, how these things interacts, how the magic works – I know there was a war deep back in history but that’s about it. I don’t even know how old the principle characters are beyond “very”. The world is hollow, the world is generic, the organisations that make up the world – the covens, the record keeper, the guardians – they’re all just words. This becomes especially glaring when the guardians seem to be utterly incapable of actually guarding anything.

The characters – well the most developed characters two me were introduced in the prologue, their personality, their relationship, their feelings are more real than anyone else’s – and they become pretty irrelevant once the prologue is done.

The main characters, Deziree and Michael feel much more shallow. Michael has one element – attraction to Dez. In fact, their whole romance is an unnecessary distraction, in this short book, from the actual end-of-the-world plot that is supposed to be their main attention. Michael feels almost… distracted by the end of the world. Especially since that’s pretty much all we have on Michael – he’s a mercenary (totally unexplained what that means and who for) who was called in for REASONS and he loves Dez, that’s it

Now move to Dez and we do know a lot more about her – she’s a thief and a bar owner and we know her position on a range of topics – because Dez doesn’t have issues, she has entire compilation volumes. Dez has mother issues over her dead, raped mother. She has daddy issues that come to the fore. She has issues over falling in love and immortality (or at least longevity). She has issues with her adoptive mother. She has issues with loving Michael. She has issues with her own demon blood and what that means for her.

And NONE of them are developed. How could they be? The book is far too short to deal with what could easily be 3 or 4 books worth of inspiration. The romance just smoothes out – except the ending where Dez does something that I don’t even remotely understand. She is deeply betrayed, but so little is made of the connection – or Dez’s emotional investment – that it’s a complete non-issue. She fears becoming evil and then the issue goes away. She has issues and they disappear – they never get actually developed or resolved satisfactorily.

The Devil You know
By Jenna Gregorie

I have to say this book was extremely hard to put down
from the start of the very first chapter.
I have not read any of Jenna Gregoire’s book’s before, but I admit once I have finished this review, book#2 is going to be bought, and definitely started, just so I know what direction this series is going
Jenna Gregoire has created a world where shifters and those of the supernatural realm have become known within the human world, and have found ways to co-exist together including giving us a slightly different understanding to the way each different species lives and survives, actually it’s a great variation to the characteristics usually found in some of the different types of paranormal species.
It was a superb take on the varieties found with vampires, you could almost accept them as human in many ways. There is a far less animalistic or predatory reaction from these characters, and Vegas who you cannot help but fall for is definitely beyond perfect, these characteristics balance each other out beautifully, its so easy getting caught up with what they experience.
Vegas and Cassandra have been around for over four hundred years, and even though they have only allowed friendship to evolve between the two of them, they have always had a deeply passionate love developing between them. Up until now neither would allow the next step in this relationship to develop, not wanting their friendship to get lost, but finally the depth of their emotions and desires, finally decided to take them in a direction they had been fighting, and they finally realise what they had been missing from each other.
Cassandra is a half breed, who has never really had a connection to her demon side. Half witch and half demon, she's unaware of her capabilities, due to never being in touch with the side of her personality she found socially unacceptable, she finds herself avoiding getting in touch with a large part of herself, but through numerous events that occur this is something she has to consider urgently.
Through a number of events and the death's of certain witch's from different covers, we are suddenly engulfed into the evil and magic that the supernatural realm has access to and there is always someone who wants to have a final say in what they want to do with the power they hold in their hands.
Unknowingly the characters we find are so easy to relate to, who take us on this fast paced journey of dramatic adventure while trying to get to the bottom of the major problems that has been suddenly brought into our world, Cassandra finds certain parts of her personality become important as they develop, trying to stop those determined to change the balance of power within our world.
I don't want to give to much away, but due to this authors easy style, with description and developing a web that’s pulled together BRILLIANTLY as the storyline develop’s, its hard not to feel the emotional effects this dramatic situation has on everyone involved. Superbly written with a great balance to the dark and light within this plot, you find wanting to know the end result of what’s going on prevents you from putting the book down until the final chapter. A terrific series that will keep you wanting more of the action Jenna Gregoire has created for us. Cannot wait to grab book 2.

Just a Ginny side note: One of these days, when Jena isn't paying attention, I'm going to do a release day review that says "RELEASED TODAY, MOTHER FUCKER"

But she's probably stressed out enough without my shenanigans... so I'll save that for another time.

And Facebook later...

Onto the review!!

So I always feel weird A) reviewing a book I beta read and B) reviewing a book for a friend. I mean, it's not like I'm worried I'm going to have to say something mean about the book painstakingly created by someone I care about, because I'm not friends with shitty authors as a rule, but because why would you believe me?

Well, my friends and faithful followers (shut up, I totally have some. One. Who's my husband. It still counts.) if you don't believe me when I say that "The Devil You Know" is good old fashion urban fantasy fun, than you're only fucking yourself over.

TDYK is a fast paced mystery slash action adventure set in an Urban Fantasy world with romantic elements. It's so easy for something with that much going on to go wrong, but Jena... well she makes it go so, so right. The characters are highly engaging, the bad guy is a total douche, and I spent half the novel going "no seriously, Jena... this is the secret villain. Right? Right? Yeah, I'm totally right." For like, eight e-mails because Jena was out or at work or trapped in a burning bus or something because why else would she have been ignoring my e-mails?

Unless it was because she was laughing at me because I was wrong.

...

Excuse me for a minute while I confirm Jena wasn't laughing at me.

Okay, I'm back... and since she wasn't cackling at me and calling me an idiot behind my back, I don't have to delete this entire thing and start over. Not that I'm petty or anything...

*shifty*

So one of the things that can go so wrong with mysteries is the whodunit. Either they tip their hat too early, or they are so out of left field that you make that "really, bitch, really?" face before carefully placing the book or your e-reader down and chucking something else across the room. TDYK does neither. Witness exhibit "Yeah, I'm totally right..." And because I've stated that, if you try to tell me that you totally say it coming like 25% into the book, I'll call you a filthy fucking liar. To your face. On the flip side though, the big bad nasty isn't... actually, I'm still reeling a bit from that one a month or so later and can't think of a damn thing to say that doesn't give away any more hints than I've already given you.

And that reeling kick in the pants is only one of the sucker punches in store for you at the end of TDYK. Oh yeah, that's right. There are two more. TWO MORE. WHAM! Right to your most sensitive bits.

In fact, I still don't think I've forgiven Jena for one of them.

Let me just poke at that wound quick...

Yeup, still fresh.

Don't let the sucker punches dissuade you though. TDYK is well worth any and all emotional turmoil.

Someone is killing Guardians and hunting the secret stone that will allow a portal to be opened and demons to be unleashed into the world. The Half-Demon Deziree along with her vampire boyfriend, Vegas, and his brother Lucas try to head off the killer before he can get the portal opened. The trio soon discovers that someone has been helping the killer and now they are not sure who can be trusted. Their race around several continents will finally come to an end when they find the killer and attempt to stop the portal from opening.

There were several things I liked about the book and several that I didn’t like. I loved the cover, great work on that. I loved the romance building between Dez and Vegas. I loved the extra abilities that Dez picked up while hunting for the killer.

I didn’t like the romance between Dez and Vegas. I know that seems like a contradiction from what I just said, but the romance was a love/hate thing. I love you but lets not get physically involved (again) until we build a solid relationship? Really? 400 Years isn’t long enough to know?

Another thing I thought was a bit hookey was when Dez discovered one of her killer powers. Instead of telling Vegas about it, she decides to test it out on him. Really? I think I have control, but I’m not sure so lets just see if I can start and then stop something that has the potential to kill you. Now that’s love, right?

Finally, the ending. This was sort of a mystery with who could be helping the killer. Instead of giving hints or clues along the way, suddenly Dez just knows who it is. Not only that but it is completely out of character for the guilty party. So, no, I didn’t guess before the big reveal, but that was like pulling a chocolate bar out of the hat.

JMHO

This story is introduced with a short prequel, titled Burning, that sets the events in motion. It doesn't go heavily into the background of each character and how they interact. It pretty much sets the ball rolling and these events unfold into our story.

Dez is a part human, part demon being just trying to make a living and enjoy life while she can. Since she's had a lot of time to watch relationships develop, fizzle, and end during her four hundred years, she's not really the commitment type. So working with her best friend, Vegas, she kind of gets blind-sided when they end up together. But that's only a side story. The real story involves secrets, destruction and saving the day in the end. And did I mention the supernatural beings involved: witches, vampires, demons?

This book is different in a way that you're kind of thrown towards characters that already have a history together. There isn't a whole lot of emotion building from acquaintances to friends to lovers. We more see the lovers struggling to accept that they're more than friends. It's just different. But the actual paranormal story (that I just won't dive into because I want you to be surprised) is good. It's fun to follow Dez and Vegas as they unravel the mystery of what's going on and try to stop it. Although I will mention that Vegas, a nickname for Michael, is used interchangeably with his real name which left me confused or thinking of two different people until I got the hang of things.

It's a fun story to follow. And while the ending made me think a little less of Dez, I'm looking forward to more world-building and demons.

I had such great expectations when I read the description for "The Devil You Know;" unfortunately, this was just a mediocre read.

Deziree or Dez is half demon and half human. She owns a trendy bar in New York. For 400 years she has been best friends with a sexy vampire she calls "Vegas" until one night they decide to take their relationship a step further. When Dez wakes up, Vegas is gone and she wonders if she has made a mistake and risked the end of their friendship.

When Vegas finally contacts Dez, he explains he was called away on serious business. Apparently, the supernatural community is concerned that a full-blooded demon might have entered their world. This is confirmed when Vegas' brother, Lucas shows up and details how the only woman he has ever loved was murdered by a demon.

Dez, Vegas, and Lucas set out on a mission to take down the demon before he can open a portal which will allow other demons to cross. There will be discoveries and betrayals before the mission is complete but the question is who will be left standing.

This book had so much potential but suffered from an identity crisis. What is it? Is it a paranormal mystery, romance or urban fantasy? Additionally, the story suffered from a lack of action and excitement. The romance was not sizzling hot. It was just lukewarm at best. Despite the surprise ending I found myself relieved when the book ended. Needless to say I will not be moving on with the series.

3.5 from this blogger.
OK this is a SHORT book, it was shorter than I was expecting. I thought the premise was a good one. The lead in is good enough to grab my attention. We have Dez who runs a nightclub, and Michael who is a drunk playboy. I was a little taken back when things progressed so far (not a fan of "drunken mistakes") then they were wanting to slow things back down. Im confused how after 400 years there could be more to learn about each other. I definitely think Ms. Gregoire is going to write bigger and better things. I felt like this was maybe a quick write from a deadline maybe. Not sure. I think there are many ways to expand and since this is book 1, I assume there is more to come. I look forward to seeing if my prediction about the authors ability comes true in future books.

First of all I want to thank the author for giving me this book for an honest review..So here it is: I gotta say that I love this cover! Very appealing and fitting. (: I was totally immersed into this book, once I started I couldn't & didn't want to stop. It's a great start to a new series. This book is packed with action, hot vamps, steamy romance scenes, betrayal, and has a kick ass heroine! Vegas is my favorite! He is hot, sweet, funny, and a bad ass vampire. There were a couple of surprises I didn't see coming, like who the full blooded demon is and I really enjoyed that. You read so many books and a lot of them become predictable, but not this one. I def. recommend this book to all paranormal romance readers and will be looking forward to more books in this series.

After a night of drunken sex with his best friend Dez, Vegas hops on a plane for a job but never tells Dez what’s up. So she has the great experience of waking up to an empty bed. Personally, I’d kick him in the balls the next time I saw him but Dez is nicer than I am and forgives him. Then again he is a walking, talking, blood sucking sexy vampire so I won’t hold it against her. He had a reason after all and shit is about to get real. Demons have found a way out of hell and into their realm. This is obviously a big issue because they already have one dead witch (from Burning, the prequel, which is in the beginning of this book so you don’t have a reason not to read it) and the body count will only grow.
