G'day, I'm Bec Botefuhr and I'm a 25 year old Aussie girl. I love writing, I love horses, I love the outback. I am Australian born and bred and proud! I came up with my books from dreams and I love each and every one of them, I know my characters and I live them each day. My belief is that all Authors are great, no matter what they write. "True blue, is it me and you? Is it mum and dad? Is it a cockatoo? Is it standing by your mate, when she's in a fight? Or just Vegemite? True blue."
This review is for the out of print version of the book. I'll definitely read the updated version and write another one! . . . . I'm going with 3 stars and I'll try to make sense of my rating because this book has me confused...
As I was staring at my screen thinking how on earth to explain my feelings I noticed that even the cover confuses me... I mean look at it! Why 3 hands? Obviously none of them belongs to the man, but two belong to the same person and the other is different... Oh man, I don't make any sense!
Sorry!! I'll start again!
So, we have a 19-year old girl, who witnessed a murder and has to be placed into protective custody. She is being protected by two cops, Ryder and Nate. Ryder is 28 years old, divorced, with parents issues and BDSM tastes. Nate is his best friend, gay and in love with Ryder.
Maya and Ryder are drawn to each other but they have to juggle a murderous stalker, her vulnerability, innocence and abandonment issues (she grew up in foster care with her sister), his ex, secrets, moodiness and reluctance to talk about anything personal.
They have incredible chemistry and being together is one of the few things that make sense. Maya is also drawn to Nate for different reasons. They fast become best friends and she sees him as her confidant but when what he and Ryder hide is revealed....
At this point I have to add that I understand that for the sake of the story Maya has to stay in the same house with the cops in order to being protected, but aren't there rules against having a relationship with a person involved with the case? One more thing that didn't add up...
The murder mystery and the serial killer is creepy and you feel the threat but despite that, it has a quick and anti-climactic end. I'd prefer if this story arc was to be continued in the next book, but it'll be about Maya's parents...
To sum it up, I liked the book and I'm intrigued enough to read the next, but there were certain things that baffled me, the heroes didn't stay in character and certain liberties although necessary for the story didn't work out and left me confused. Too many storylines for just one book!
I love this woman's books! Does anyone know what happened to her? Why did she stop writing? Please give me a heads up if ya know. I really miss her stories!
This book is RomSusp with a dose of erotica. Yeah, there's some of that M/F/M going on, plus some M/M.
The suspense part was very good. She's in the Witsec program and the two cops taking care of her, of course, become her lovers. Sooo, there's some great action both in, and out, of the bedroom!
It was bad for so many reasons...really stupid plot. 2 cops in their 20's. Ryder the big dark manwhore /Dom and Nate big gentle gay puppy. They live in a gigantic house. Maya who witnesses a violent crime and is placed into the witness protection program. Ryder instead of playing a cop is playing a Dom with two adorable blonde dolls, spanking them and bitching with Maya (but what he really really wants is to fuck/spank her, and he actually forgot all about being professional and finding the killer),meanwhile Nate is playing a shrink/best friend with Maya, who also has hots for his colleague. most ridiculous story I have read this year.
WITNESS PROTECTION is a super sexy psychological thriller that will leave you on the edge and of your seat panting for more!
When Maya Traydon sets out for her journey home one night, it ends up far from being a normal night as she ends up being witness to a murder being performed by a sadistic serial killer. In fear for her life and the safety of her loved ones, she agrees to go into a modified witness protection program – finding herself in a house where her protectors, Ryder and Nate, are hot, hunky and exuding so much sex appeal that she doesn’t know which will be the source of her downfall, the killer or the stifling pheromones oozing from the pores of her protectors.
While Nate plays good cop offering the comfort and sweetness she craves, Ryder is the bad boy who shocks her with his kinky dominant persona and oh-so-wicked ways awakening the sexual desires she didn’t know she possessed. As the killer gets closer to Maya, the intensity of the story revves up a few notches and everyone’s protective instincts kick in resulting in a satisfying and exciting conclusion.
WITNESS PROTECTION will definitely be going on my “new favorites” list! I can’t wait to see more stories like this by author Bec Botefuhr - I will most certainly be checking out some of her other stories. You may have picked this one up for free in December 2012, I didn’t, but I was fortunate enough to snag it on Amazon for free as a prime member – if these aren’t options for you, then it’s definitely worth the $2.99 digital price! Enjoy!
I wanted to like this book soooo much. I mean the cover is YUM and 3 hands. bonus...it was free! Oh yeah...this is going to be good. Nope. Could not get past the stilted writing and the gaps in the story. It was suspenseful? not very. It was BDSM? No, not really.
Maya witness a murder and is placed in witness protection with 2 super sexy guys. Ryder is a Dom into BDSM and Nate is gay. Both really hot. I never really got the "master in control" vibe from Ryder. There were several story elements that really bothered me.
1. She is in witness protection from a series killer stalker who has been sending her deliveries while she in witness protection but they GO OUT TO LUNCH. Really? They never do that on Hawaii 5-0. She is supposed to HIDING. They find a body hanging by the apartment then GO SWIMMING??? Hard to feel fear for the character.
2. When they go to Nate's parents' house, Ryder and Maya have loud sex on the washing machine in the laundry room with the rest of the family in the kitchen on the other side of the door. WAHHHH? I mean his parent are, but that is just an ICK factor of about 11.
3. They never speak in contractions. No one says "I am" "We have" " I will" Come on let the conversation flow. Way to stilted.
4. We got NO internal dialogue from anyone. What was Ryder thinking when he went from pissed as hell to lovey dovey in 2 seconds flat?
It was a good story, but too many distractions and story elements that did not line up for me.
I hate giving bad reviews but seriously I'm only 11% in and I'm sorry to say this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever tried to read. So silly and unbelievable. I mean she's under police protection/witness program and Ryder has subs in the living room....really, not even in fiction.
There were a lot of good things about the book. The plot was interesting, sex was hot, and I actually cared about the characters.
However, there were a ton of "are you kidding me that would never really happen" moments that were really distracting. Also, for a 28 year old Ryder sure did act like a toddler a lot of the time.
Overall engaging, but with too many issues to be a great read for me.
I hate giving bad reviews, but Witness Protection is a train wreck. There are tons of inconsistencies and it's just cheesy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if someone is in the witness protection program THEY LEAVE THEIR WHOLE LIFE BEHIND. They don't get to keep their cell phone and call and visit their family. Oh, and if their location is discovered, THEY GET MOVED. They DO NOT stay in a place where the killer can get to them. Aside from all that, the whole relationship, I use that term loosely, between Maya and Ryder is just ridiculous. The only thing I liked about this book is Nate.
I'm giving this 4 stars, I loved this book but I didn't find it amazing,(which is 5 stars) somewhere along the line it just missed that wow factor, it didn't blow my mind where after reading it I was like OMFG that was the bomb, that didn't happen, but I didn't dislike it, as I said I loved it but it was just lacking something, maybe the length could've brought the whole story together better, it felt hurried towards the end, but I'm still going to read book 2!!
A female gets raped with a knife by the crazy serial killer and she's flirting with a man at the hospital after being rescued?!?!? This says everything you could say about this book. Rediculous!
I tried. This is my opinion only. I had a hard time finishing this one. The plot had potential, but that is as far as it goes. Needs a good editor...I will leave it at that.
It was a quick read but had some strangeness to the dialogue- I.e. Absolutely NO contractions! no one says a thing that is not completely spelled out. I am not joking. I have not read anything with so much stiff dialogue.
Location? In some aspects we are to believe the story is based somewhere in the US. Then the ranch morphs into the outback... Aussie slang such as pissed off, bugger, mate etc not really the way a cop in the states would speak.
When he was thinking of law school it was Harvard but when this was mentioned we were in the outback.
So pick a location and stick with it cause it can be distracting.
The story and plot well, you actually have to let a lot go with relation to believability cause the whole idea of cops looking after someone in witness protection bringing in women/friends to party, going to lunch, swimming in the complex pool, having sex all the time - that's what we refer to as fantasy so for that the book is a little fun read 🙃
"A dominant, a true dominant knows what a woman wants, knows how she wants it and where. If she can't take spankings, he doesn't give them because it's his job to know her and her reaction. Not all subs get whipped or spanked, some just like to be tied or cuffed."
Oh my goodness, Bec just took my Dom Alpha loving male love to a whole new level!! She gave me everything kinky sex, suspense and the emotional, kill me now, roller coaster ride. I never wanted this book to end. I actually found myself thinking of ways to make the series last FOREVER!!!
This story begins when Maya accidentally sees a serial killer in the middle of murdering his next victim, which then moves Maya to the top of next up list. She is immediately put in a “modified” witness protection program and left in the hands of Nate and Ryder.
"So you are going to dump me with two fat, old men who are meant to babysit me?" The officer chuckles. "Fat and Old." "What's so funny?" "You will see."
Ryder and Nate, two men that are beautiful and smoking hot!! I found myself uncomfortable several times thinking I might need a cold shower or two. Ryder is incredibly handsome, a dominate Alpha Male but he is also sweet and romantic. Once he sees Maya, he sees something he wants, something he wants to own. But of course Maya is not open to it and thats what got me hooked!!
"Excuse me GI Joe but I just walked in on you spanking Barbie, while she was tied to your bed. How is that not wrong?" I will have you baby, mark my words. I want you as much as you want me, you just won't admit it.
Then there's Nate, I loved Nate. He is gay, blonde, tanned, and a cowboy (Does it get any better) I didn't think so!! He is in love with Ryder, and somewhere along the way he develops feelings for Maya. Nate is their shoulder to cry on, the voice of reason and the absolute icing on the cake that made this book. I adored him, I wanted him for myself and I absolutely think he still is holding my heart.
"You love me Nate?" "To the stars." "And I love you to the moon;"
Oh Miss Maya and her beautiful boys!! Maya is sweet, funny, stubborn, strong and irresistible. I was relived she wasn't a virgin but still had my really one sexual partner and your a freak in the sheets (I think I was jealous)!! Because I loved her despite that!! I loved her connection with Nate and I adored her connection with Ryder. I loved how strong she was even though she knew this killer was after her, she made me say thats right kick him in the balls!!
"Want to know how I see you?" "Not really." I huff "You have a beautiful face; it is this little oval shape, and you remind me of a doll. You have gorgeous brown eyes and thick luscious hair. Big full lips that are far nicer than most I have kissed. You have a gorgeous body, flat and curvy at the same time. Not an ounce of fat. You are tiny, and I love it because I am not. I want to wrap my arms around you and protect you. I think you are stunning because you are different, and that is something."
This is a love triangle but it is a love triangle that involves friendship and a love story that stole my heart. The three of them together is perfection and it just works. Infact I want my own Nate/Ryder triangle where and how do I sign up for that? As for the serial killer, he gives the story angst, fear especially when Bec gives you his POV. I adored this book and I adored book 2 even more but thats for the next review!!!
"Well, shit, if that wasn't the best damned birthday present in the world, strike me down now."
And yeah this book was definitely like a favorite birthday present!!! Its absolutely one I won't forget!!!!
So... this really had the bones of a good story. There were just things here and there that really bugged me. One of the biggies is she really needs an editor. I know, I know... self-published author and it's so expensive. I get that. But there has to be someone within her circle of friends... a friend of a friend... someone who can give her some good guidance on things that don't make sense or copy editing issues, word usage (she really needs to review when to use "then" vs "than", among other things), etc. This could have been so much better.
One thing that drove me nuts was when someone got mad, it was like white-hot, instantaneous mad. There was no in between or ramp up to a big shouting match. Sure, I think maybe everyone gets that way now and then, but with Maya and Ryder, it was like that all the time. And then they'd each say things that were unforgivable, and then forgive each other. And then it starts again.
Near the end, when she was raving about him lying to her? He didn't lie. He didn't tell her everything, but he didn't lie. In my mind, it's a big difference. If she'd asked him point-blank about some things and he just didn't divulge the info, that's one thing. But it's not even a subject that would have come up. That little anger session was a bit overboard for me.
I'm also going to go out on a limb and say this was set in Australia (as far as I remember, it wasn't clear), and I'm not going to research it, but maybe Australia doesn't have a drinking age? Or it's lower than the US? Because here's this 19-year-old girl getting wasted with police officers. Not that 19-year-old girls in the US don't get sloshed, but it would be frowned upon for police officers to encourage it. And then, when her 17-year-old sister came over, she went and got bottles of wine? I'm pretty sure that means the sister was drinking or else Maya was a lush.
I definitely give points for creative use of a wildlife preserve.
All that said, it was an entertaining story aside from the stuff that bugged me. I had heard going into this one that the editing wouldn't be there, but I wanted to give it a shot because I'd heard good things about the story. So, I have another freebie from this author that I hear is also good, and I'll give it a shot.
Great story. Maya, Ryder, and Nate have a very strong bond. It's challenged many times but remains unbreakable in the end.
Maya--I liked her to a point. I could not stand her at the very beginning. She was rude and just ungrateful in my opinion. I did warm up to her though. She surprised my by how quickly she went from cold to hot on the BDSM stuff...completely against it to completely into it. In the end I found her perfect for Ryder.
Ryder--yummy! He's a bad boy with tattoos who's into BDSM and a smile that can make your panties drop. What's not to love! He has issues and an ex wife I'd like to punch in the face but it's ok. I did think he was going overboard about not telling her what was going on outside the house. He wanted her to trust him but yet wouldn't come out with his secrets.
Nate--Beautiful gay guy who loves to snuggle...every woman's dream:) I loved him. Everything about him, and I love his family too. I love how he was there to hold her every time something happened. All around good boy from the country.
My favorite part of the book...
Favorite quotes
"You are going to have to pass over cuddle duty one day Nate, she is mine."--Ryder
"I had roses, wine, chocolate...I was going to make love to you, without the dominance, just me and you. I was going to tell you I love you, tell you that you have become my world, my soul, my life."--Ryder
Over all this was a great book. I am gonna give it 4 stars. I am taking away one star because of the grammar. It's a deal breaker for me. I can't stand it when an author will not use contractions. Especially words like "it is" when you can just say "it's". It throws me off and takes away from the book. But other than that I can honestly say I loved it and i'm excited to read more of her series!
19-year-old Maya witnessed a girl being murdered by a sick serial killer. In order to keep her safe, Maya was put in a witness protection program. She had to live with two hot cops - Ryder and Nathan.
What I liked about the book was that it was not only about sex. I loved the suspense, even there was not much. It was a quick read, so I had to say I liked the pace and how the story was told.
What I didn't like about the book was that some scenes just made no sense to me at all. Or a bit exaggerated.
Maya lost her virginity on the dance floor during her school dance with Chance, the boy she had been attracted to. And everyone saw it and took pictures. I assumed that it was at the school since it was a school dance or even it was at someplace else, shouldn't there have been chaperones? teachers to keep an eye on them?
Besides, why was Maya still be able to contact her sister? She was in a witness protection program, so she should have been allowed to contact ANYONE she had known before. The point is to hide the witness. If she could talk/meet/call her sister, what was the point of changing her name??
Another point that bugged me was that the characters behaved a bit weird. Sometimes, they got angry at nothing. Ryder acted so immature when Maya told him she thought Jasmine was not his daughter. And Maya got angry that Ryan "lied" to her when what he had done was not tell her everything. Shouldn't she have used the word "HIDE" instead of "LIE"?
There were several misspellings which were distracting and annoying at times, but I tried to overlook those flaws.
My original thought was to rate this book 2 stars, but the part near the end when Maya, her sister and another victim were being captured by the serial killer changed my mind. Just so you know, I loved that part and it was probably the only part that was very intriguing.

I've only just started the book and I already dislike it. The dialogue is so stilted and forced, and the "cops" Nate and Ryder don't make any sense at all as policemen or whatever's. And what is up with the Witness Protection crap, they keep her in the same city and she can still visit her family and talk to her friends. In what universe does that class as protecting the witness? And I know they try to explain it by saying they hope she will draw the BTK(that was just annoying) out, but then why put her in witness protection?! And don't get me started on the cover image. Why are there three hands, when it is in no way a Menage story. Everything about this novel annoys and confuses me. And I couldn't connect to the characters at all. Ariana/Maya is so annoying, especially hated when she discovers that Nate and Ryder used to get it on with Ryder's ex wife and she goes crazy and acts all devastated. Yeah kinda sucks learning it from the ex but come-on you guys weren't even together, and its not something you just come out and admit. And when she finds out that Ryder had a daughter who he only just discovered and she acts all betrayed? Why is it any of your dang buisness, you guys have only just started a "relationship" it isn't really any of your concern until he decides to tell you at his own pace. Nate and Ryder were just so ... tried. They were like the stereotypical Alpha Male and his gay bestfriend who is in love with him. I don't know, it just annoyed me the dynamic between the three characters. And finally the BTK (which is so original -_-)but everything about it was so odd and confusing. I just found it hard to really imagine this big bad killer.
To sum it all up. I did not like this novel. I appreciate the idea of it, but the reality in my opinion was some what lacking.

Wow, is all I have to say!!!!! I was wrapped up in the story from the very beginning. It touches on so many different levels, its an overall great read. Love, loss, sadness, happiness, forgiveness, and not let us forget about suspense. All my favorites.
I know that some people don't understand certain connections one might have with the opposite sex but there are times where a connection forms that others can begin to understand.
Maya is being hunted by serial killer. She witnessed a murder and now she is need of protection and that's how she meets Ryder and Nate. Ryder makes his attentions clear from the beginning, he wants Maya. But Maya struggles with the idea of giving in or not giving in. She knows Ryder is dangerous. Maya's only sexual encounter was bad. She fears it could happen again.
Ryder and Nate.....
Ryder is a Dominant and Nate is gay!!!! Nate has feelings beyond friendship for Ryder and Ryder has feelings for Nate that are not beyond friendship. In walks Maya and everything changes for Ryder. Nate warns Maya of Ryder. Does he do this for this own selfish reasons? Maya presents a challenge for Ryder and Ryder has problem accepting that challenge.
With Ryder's good looks and charming ways, he finds himself accomplishing his challenge to seduce Maya. A love between them forms without them even knowing and Ryder finds himself having a difficult time accepting that Maya might what he has been wanting and needing all a long. Ryder comes with a past. It is hurt for a past relationship and fears that he could be hurt again if he lets Maya in.
This was good. Unfortunately I got the old version. But I could see the potential. There were a few things that bothered me. Such as seducing and having sex with the person you are suppose to be protecting. Not only that but in the beginning Ryder brought over two of his subs and they went to at it all night. Now Im just saying wouldn't you loose your focus. And Maya is in the next room having to listen to it. Then the chief Ryder's boss is all cool with them messing around, just make sure you are protecting her first. Um ok sure. Then there is Ryder and his temper tantrums. I mean come on! Gezz... Yeah under it all he has a big heart but he has a temper and yelled at so darn much. How many times did he yell at her and call her a little shit!? Nate on the other hand was such a sweet heart. He counter balanced Ryders roughness. Maya just got on my nerves. She was young and very immature. Always crying and complaining. Ok and she walked six miles caring someone on her back with three broken ribs and a gun shot wound in the thigh??? Umm?? I'm just saying I think that was a little much.
What I did like was the banter. The arguing which lead to sexual tension. Loved Nate always being the voice of reason. Loved Nate being a shoulder to cry on. Loved Nate. Maybe I will reread it later with the updated version.
I couldn't finishing it. I got to chapter two. I tried, but I just couldn't get into the characters or story.
It was full of punctuation errors (no apostrophes on possessives, no commas or periods when needed, etc).
There were grammar mistakes. Example: "So, is what is your real name?" Ryder asks. And other little things (out instead of our, etc) that just added up.
Also, did not like Ryder. He's supposed to be a cop (which he reminded the guy who handed Ari off to them when they tried to tell them what to do). I expect some professionalism out of him. Not bringing 2 subs to the house when he's supposed to be protecting Ari and is on duty (even though they're in his home -- it's still a protection detail!). Also, he was a dick when she discovered his role in BDSM. Why not, I don't know, sit her down and calmly explain things? No, he has to yell and flip out and say: "A sub is not a sandwich you insolent shit, it is a submissive..." And then he was all, come at me bro and pulled her hair in the kitchen. WTF? I could over look the use of "baby" and "sweetheart" by Nate and him, but this was just...unprofessional and there wasn't a proper build-up. I just didn't like Ryder's attitude to Ari and the whole BDSM thing. Seemed less like a Dom and more like an ass to me.
I couldn't really get into things, with all the errors and such, I just gave up.
Giving this 2 stars is being generous. I really tried to like this, came at it with an open mind but I just couldn't like it much. There was so much inconsistency that it was hard to keep up with. I think one of the glaring issues that kept recurring was the use of colloquialisms. Unless I'm mistaken the setting was supposed to be LA and all of the characters were American. There were too many times that instead of using terminology or phrasing that is American there were what I believe to be Australian terms used. This made it almost impossible to connect with the characters because it happened so consistently. I'm not saying that it would have been a better read had it been set in Australia but it would at least have had more consistency. Even with that being said, it was very hard to believe any of the characters. Take Nate for example, he was supposed to be a cop but if that's the case how could he be hanging out all the time. Plus, she was supposed to be there for her protection but how could they protect her when they spent so much time drinking. Ryder was supposed to be a Dom, but instead of being Dominant he just seemed angry all the time and the women that were "submitting" to him were completely unbelievable. Overall there were just too many things going wrong with this book to even consider liking it.
Need a new mystery novel to read ? Driving home one night , Maya hears a scream and pulls her car over only to find a serial killer killing a girl. Soon she finds herself stuck in the witness protection programme and her name is changed from Maya to Ariana. Thinking that she is going to be stuck with two old and fat cops, she protests. Then James Clancy drops Maya off to the house and she meets the two cops - Ryder and Nate. They are anything but fat and old. In fact, though one of them ends up being gay - they are both going on my fictional boyfriend list. As more killings start happening , it seems that the killer wants to draw out Maya as she is the only person who can identify him. The other side of this story is the romance and the flirting between Ryder who is a Dom and Nate who is gay. Can they get this killer behind bars before Maya finds herself killed ? Will Ryder and Nate work out their issues as past secrets that can wreck their friendship come bubbling to the surface ? Find out in this awesome book and now I cannot wait to read Book #2 and get more of these characters.
WOWZA!!! This book was one FANTASTIC read!!! Smokin' Hot RYDER & his Smokin' Hot friend, NATE!!! Maya becomes acquainted with Ryder & Nate after she witnesses a Murder by a serial killer who then is on the hunt for her to kill her! She moves in with them under the Witness Protection Program until the serial killer is caught! Nate is a cop & Ryder is head of her security! These three characters have an AMAZING chemistry! Nate & Maya develop early on a special bond & become immediate friends! With Ryder & Maya, it takes longer for their friendship to develop because they both CRAVE CONTROL...Stubborn! Stubborn! But BOY once these two cave & give in to their feelings for one another...their PASSION is WOAH ;)
I can't really say enough about this book!! Put this book right now on your TBR list!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! && the 2nd book "Forsaken" is due to be released Jan. 2013 ;)
So I only gave this book 3 stars. It was just OK. First off, the book was listed as a menage, it only refers to menage, menage never actually happens between the main characters, it occurred in the past. The sex scenes... just OK. Ryder is suppose to be dominant. Nate is a homosexual. Ryder just plays at being dominant, it's almost a joke. They never really get into Nate, relationship wise. It would have made a great menage story. The concept of the story is Maya witnesses a gruesome murder and gets stalked by a sicko. Ryder and Nate are suppose to protect her by Maya living in their secure home. Some of the torture the is happening with said sicko is pretty graphic and made me cringe. The ending, all in all, made me roll my eyes. Like I said, it was an OK read. Pretty quick. If I didn't already have the series, I probably would not continue it. But I do... so let's see how book 2 goes.
I have read this book a handful of times. I did write a review but it seems to have disappeared. As I have just re read this book, here is a short review. I really like this story. I like everything from the writing style to the story. I really like Maya. I liked that even though it put her in danger, she did the right thing and went to the police about what she saw. I liked the friendship Maya had with Ryder and Nate. I liked the chemistry between Ryder and Maya and liked them as a couple. Maya’s strength was clear to see throughout the story. I loved this entire story but I loved the safari scene. I was on the edge of my seat and liked what Maya did for Sandy and Amy. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and a gripping read.
Great story and free! At first the bickering between Ryder and Maya was annoying. Good grief no one really says that to someone, but then it became a game of cat and mouse. You just couldn't determine which one was the cat and which one was the mouse. Very interesting since Ryder is the total Dom.
Good action/thriller scenes. The sex was hot. I didn't like the extra girls hanging around in the beginning. I thought was a slap in the face to Maya, but it worked out for them.
Kind of disappointed that it wasn't a M/M/F book. :( But nevertheless, it was really good. Can't wait for the next one to come out!
