Rate this book
Lacey Bennett always knew she was different. When she couldn’t control her emotions, things would explode around her. It wasn’t until a time traveller named Taylor befriended her that she learned of her amazing psychic abilities and there were others like her known in the future as "the evolved." Because of these powers, Lacey is the chosen one to prevent the future from nuclear devastation. Her mission is to prevent three events from happening. To complicate matters even more, Lacey and Taylor’s friendship has blossomed into a romance. Even with the interference of the dark spirits, they prevented the first disaster; a train wreck. They head to Las Vegas to celebrate before gearing up for round two. And once again the bad guys seem to be one step ahead of them. They are not safe anywhere! Taylor brings Lacey to a secluded school for gifted children named Serenity for some much needed answers. But things aren’t always what they seem. With the fate of the world in her hands, who can Lacey trust with her life and those she cares about the most?

I am currently a Financial Services Administrator. The Evolved Trilogy is now finished: Altered - Revelations of the Evolved, Broken - Afflictions of the Evolved and Choices - Complications of the Evolved. The trilogy is about psychic abilities and time travel and is geared towards young adults for a quick and fun read. I have a wicked sense of humour and a lot of patience.

** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for and honest review **

“Broken – Afflictions of the Evolved” is the second book in the Evolved Trilogy. Which if you haven’t read “Altered – Revelations of the Evolved” (book one in the trilogy) then you want to start there.

Commencing were “Altered – Revelations of the Evolved” ended Lacey and Taylor start to concentrate on the second event that needs to be changed in order to save the future, even though dark forces are hot on their heels. Their romance is ramped up along with the introduction of new characters.

I found this book to be better then the first and am rating it a solid 3.75. The introduction of new characters gave the series more depth and drama and worked well with some of the plot twists.

Here is what didn’t work for me. I generally love a story that is fast moving but in this case I wanted it to slow down. I wanted to know more about he characters and what they were feeling. I crave more descriptions so that I could visualize the surroundings. There was so much happening that you jump from one situation to next and at points it felt some what rushed. There was some profanity which pops up out of the blue which was also a tad bit disappointing because it was unnecessary.

Now here is why I can over look what I perceive to be its flaws. The whole idea of time travel is always intriguing and Currie has written a thought provoking chronicle. When I try to describe this book I liken it to the “Terminator”. Lacey is John Connor except she has paranormal abilities and a kick butt, you can’t beat me, attitude. She questions what is in front of her and doesn’t just assume that everything is what it seems. She has a temper and bouts of jealousy. She is not a debutant that stomps her feet until the things she wants are handed to her. She regrets her past mistakes and tries to learn from them. And even though life as been hard on her she is nostalgic for those she has left behind.

This particular saga is enjoyable. It has captured my attention and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

I give this book 4.5 stars!!!

This is book #2 of the Evolved Trilogy, in the 1st book "Altered" Lacey discovers she has powerful psychic abilities - visions of the future, mind reading, telekinesis, teleporting and a controller. These abilities single her out as "the chosen one" by changing the result of 3 major events which take place in the present she can prevent the devastating nuclear war in the future. Lacey falls in love with Taylor who is a time traveller from the future with psychic abilities, known as an Evolved Human. He assists her to discover her powers, introduces her to other Evolved humans from the future who assist her on her mission and she meets other evolved humans who are trying to prevent her from succeeding along the way.

* I loved the 1st book "Altered" if you haven't already read this I strongly advise you start there, for once you've read that you wont hesitate to read this book, you will want to find out what happens next just like I did*

With the 1st mission (to stop the train collision) completed successfully Taylor helps Lacey to develop her abilities as their 2nd mission approaches. In this book Lacey learns her 2nd mission is to prevent an explosion at a power plant, she meets up with her evolved human friends Zed and Triona, is introduced to new ones and her journey of self discovery continues.
With the dark spirits hot on their heels who can she trust? at every turn this story is full of action and adventure which is something I wanted more of in the 1st book. I would still have liked a little more information on other characters Lacey is introduced to, to help visualise them better such as the Dr and Varian.
After reading Altered I also wanted to know more about other characters such as Zed who is cocky and arrogant but makes me laugh, in this book my request was answered - I certainly got more!

I found myself lost in this book on several occasions to the point where I didn't want to put the book down.

I love how Shawnda describes the time travel in a way that it's hard to disbelieve, yet again she fails to disappoint as all the questions you ask yourself while reading are answered. I feel this book was better written because the elements of action, adventure and suspense where increased as was the emotions of the characters giving the story more depth, however I don't wish to take anything away from the 1st book either as this is definitely turning out to be a fantastic trilogy.

Yet again Shawnda provides another twist in the plot giving us a shocking ending, she's an amazing writer and I can honestly say I did not see that one coming until it was happening!

This book is certainly not one to be missed, I can't wait for book #3.

Hello readers!
Broken was a great follow up to Altered Revelations of the Evolved by Shawnda Currie! It takes place directly after Altered ends, which I really enjoy in a series because as a reader, I feel like I do not miss anything in between. I always wonder what occurs during that time. Where did the characters go, what did they do. Broken solves that issue!

Now your most likely thinking, if this were so great of sequel to Altered, then why did I rate it only three birdies. Well, between both Altered and Broken, I enjoyed Altered more. Now I am not saying I didn't enjoy Broken, because I most certainly did! But as a reader, so far Altered is my favorite of the series. I just didn't think Broken deserved the same rating.

Lacey tends to be over jealous when it comes to Taylor, and while yes I understand why her character might react that way, and in part she has good reason to, it was a little much to the point where it was semi-annoying. However, the relationship aspect between Taylor and Lacey is adorable and makes up for ANY semi-annoying jealously!! Being a sucker that I am for for love stories, I love their chemistry between the two. I look forward to reading the third book!

If you are looking for a quick read, something that is short and easy to get through, with a little romance give this series a chance. It is very entertaining to read :]

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion and review, I gave Broken 3 stars and here is why:
Broken was a little bit disappointing after reading Alternation and enjoying it so much! The thing that really let me down had to be the plot, there wasn't a clear focus it was just here, there and everywhere. There was an introduction of characters that were not needed and I felt like maybe it could have been better if Shawnda would have focused on the primary ides rather than forcing everything into one book.
My heart broke a little bit when I realised who the real villain was, I mean I’m trying not to add a spoiler here but why! One of the best characters in the book turns out to be the one who was against them all along!
Also Lacey’s and Taylor’s relationship felt flat to me in this addition to the series, Yes there was romance and they stay together but there was definitely something off. I didn't have the same connection to the couple that I had in the first book!
I’m hoping that the next in the series is a little less boring and a lot more like the first book and please bring back the characters and the love story that I cherished!

3.0 - First I have to start off by saying that I received a free copy of this book from the author for the purpose of an honest review.

I just can't place my finger on it, but I struggle with the storytelling in this series. In the review for the first book, I reflected about how the dialogue felt clunky, I echo that sentiment here. I actually hesitate to talk about the dialogue because there is so little of it.

I like the premise of the trilogy and felt like both the first book and this book stopped in places that were good solid ending points for the action in the stories. Badly placed story breaks are a major pet peeve for me, so I really appreciate a well-divided story.

These books won't win any awards for story-telling, but they have an interesting plot that kept me interested.
