Il a passé son enfance en Égypte, puis au Liban et enfin en Île-de-France. Il exerce d'abord la médecine puis décide de se consacrer au dessin et à l'écriture, et plus particulièrement aux livres pour enfants. Il crée ses premiers albums en 1985 lorsque son fils réclame des images aux histoires qu'il raconte. Depuis cette date, il a publié plus de 150 livres pour la jeunesse, principalement à l'école des loisirs, traduits dans de nombreux pays d'Europe et d'Asie. Plusieurs de ses histoires ont été illustrées par sa sœur Nadja ou par sa mère, Olga Lecaye, poursuivant ainsi une complicité artistique initiée dans l'enfance. En 2003, il adapte en moyen métrage d'animation son album, Loulou, en étroite collaboration avec le scénariste Jean-Luc Fromental, sous le titre Loulou et autres loups, composé de plusieurs courts métrages et réalisé par Serge Elissalde. En 2006, il écrit son premier long métrage d'animation intitulé U, co-réalisé avec Serge Elissalde. Le film sera adapté en album à l'école des loisirs. En 2013, sort sur les écrans Loulou, l'incroyable secret, son second long métrage, co-écrit avec Jean-Luc Fromental et co-réalisé avec Eric Omond. Le film a reçu le César 2014 du meilleur film d'animation et a fait l'objet d'une adaptation en bande dessinée chez Rue de Sèvres. Parallèlement à son activité d'auteur-illustrateur pour la jeunesse, il pratique assidûment la photographie. Couleurs chez loulou et compagnie réunit quelques unes de ses photos. Il réalise également, dans un travail personnel en perpétuel développement, des modelages en terre ou en résine. Une rétrospective de son travail a lieu au Japon, au Musée de l'art moderne de Gunma, en 2012. Explorant avec la même passion tous les arts visuels, il a écrit une pièce-concert, mise en musique par Sanseverino, Isabelle et la bête. Elle a été mise en scène par Véronique Bellegarde et créée en décembre 2012 à la MC2 de Grenoble. Il en a dessiné également les décors. Quand il ne prépare pas une exposition de ses dessins, photographies ou sculptures (par exemple à l'Abbaye de Fontevraud en 2014 et à Angers), il dirige à l'école des loisirs la collection pour les tout-petits, loulou et Compagnie, qu'il a créée en 1994. and a young wolf who had never seen a rabbit." And so the tale begins.
The two meet under the most dire circumstances because Wolfy's uncle has a fatal accident. Being all alone and scared he seeks out Tom, the rabbit, who readily agrees to help Wolfy out in his time of need.
A friendship blossoms and despite their differences they become fast friends. Tom teaches Wolfy to play marbles, read, count and fish for his food. Wolfy teaches Tom to run really, really fast enabling him to run much faster than the other rabbits. Wolfy teaches his friend about being afraid. They take turns playing Who's-afraid-of-the-big-bad-wolf? and then Who's-afraid-of-the-rabbit?
One day Wolfy frightens Tom so badly while playing the game that the scared little rabbit rushes to his burrow and vows to never come out again. Oh my! Tom tries so hard to apologize and to coax his best friend to come play with him once more, but alas, poor Tom just lays on his bed crying and crying his heart out. Wolfy is totally devastated. What in the world has he done to his very best friend?
What will it take to get the two best friends back together once again. Is it even possible to do so or is their special friendship over? A miracle does happen but you will have to get a copy of this fabulous book and find out how things get resolved.
I love the vibrantly coloured and expressive illustrations and best of all the feelings of love, compassion and empathy that flow throughout the story. I highly, highly recommend this book and understand completely why so many people want it included in their family (and school) collection.

In this picture book, originally published in France, readers encounter a most unlikely friendship between a rabbit and a wolf. The wolf's uncle dies before teaching him how to hunt. Since Wolfy has never even seen a rabbit, he doesn't realize that the two species are natural enemies. A friendship forms between the two with Tom teaching his friend some basic skills and how to fish for food. But one day when they are trying to scare each other, Tom realizes that he actually is afraid of his big furry friend. The friendship is severed, and Tom refuses his friend's apologies and reassurances. Only his trip to a mountain where wolves have eaten up all the rabbits and mistaken him for one helps him see what it means to live in fear. Chastened and empathetic, he returns to Tom's burrow, determined to never scare his friend again, even in play. There's a great message about friendship and fears in this story, complemented with brightly-colored illustrations that rely mostly on primary colors. Although friendships between different species or individuals might seem unlikely, they can be nurtured with the right amount of care and awareness.

L'ho letto e riletto, per godermi le enormi illustrazioni e per fare mia fino in fondo la storia.
Storia che è imperniata sul tema dell'immedesimazione con l'altro, dell'amicizia e della diversità, temi sempre di attualità nonostante l'edizione originale del libro sia di fine anni '80.
Un bel libro, non retorico, da leggere tanto ai bambini che, come mi ha giustamente suggerito una collega, agli adolescenti.
La riedizione di Rizzoli del 2010 rende pienamente giustizia ai splendidi disegni!

Prenez un jeune loup et un lapin. Faites-en deux super copains qui jouent à se faire peur et vous obtiendrez une superbe histoire sur l'amitié et la différence sous le pinceau expert de Solotareff.
L'auteur est reconnaissable à la fois par son style graphique et ses couleurs tranchées, vives.
Loulou est un superbe album émouvant, intelligent qui aborde de façon sensible et tendre des thèmes pas toujours faciles. Une belle rencontre à lire et partager que l'on soit petit ou grand.

A heartwarming story about an unlikely friendship, with themes of trust, love and loyalty. The illustrations didn't grab me, but the production standards of this English edition by Gecko Press are top shelf.

Ce livre m’a été offert par le Père Noël de l’école, quand j’étais en grande section de maternelle. Nous l’avons lu tous ensemble, mais il était triste, et il nous a tous profondément attristés. Plusieurs enfants ont même pleuré. J’ai essayé de le relire plusieurs fois en grandissant, et il restait toujours aussi bouleversant. Même encore aujourd’hui.😅
