So many Christians wonder if they are living up to the high calling of Christ in our lost and dying world. How can we lay down our lives to best serve the Lord during our brief time on earth? What should be the focus of every Christian's life? Are we living and breathing for the sake of the gospel? Through a friendly and conversational style, and with many stories and Scripture verses, you will see the importance of equipping yourself with sound biblical truth to warn the lost and live in ways that adorn the gospel of Christ. We should want to encourage, bless, and speak truth boldly into the lives of everyone we meet to rescue them from God's coming wrath. These are the words and deeds that the Lord treasures because they show how real He and His love are to the world. And they are watching. The Watchmen will passionately move your heart to become a watchman for the Most High God, who blows the trumpet long and loud in the lives of the unsaved around us. The world is sleeping but must be awakened to the reality of Judgment Day that is fast approaching. We must finish strong for the Lord and take as many souls with us to heaven as possible. Everyone must be ready. Join with the watchmen of God, who lift up their trumpets to call the perishing to choose life in Christ!
Wonderful book. This book comes at you with a powerful establishment of what we are all called, as Christians, to do. It deals with the basis of Ezekiel 33:2-6. Cahill puts a NT spin on this scripture and looks at it through a witnessing lens. Are you being a watchman, or will the blood be on your hand? Hope everyone enjoys this book at least half as good as I did.
Considering that I loved OTYCDIH, this book was pretty disappointing. The writing was terrible, there was no organization to it at all, so many different tangents...I couldn't keep track with anything that was happening. A few stories have been added that are interesting, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Mark should have just added more stories to OTYCDIH to refine it, as that was an amazing book.
I'll admit that I only got halfway through the book so far, but that's because I knew someone who needed to read it more than I did! I had already read One Thing You Can't Do In Heaven before this, and I think that it goes along really well with it. I will warn you that the negative reviews on this book seem to be only because someone read it and didn't start witnessing, and became very upset with this. I can tell you from personal experience that witnessing is very hard. VERY HARD! This book (so far!) really encouraged me to become a 'watchmen', which to me this isn't a club, but a metaphor for becoming a fearless Christian. I really like when he talks about You + The Holy Spirit are the majority where ever you go! If you want to be more than just a lukewarm Christian, this will be the challenge you needed to be bold. I would personally recommend One Thing You Can't Do In Heaven first, then reading this. Not because one is better than the other, but because OTYCDIH will make you feel more comfortable about witnessing, while The Watchmen will be the challenge that completes it. By the way, you can order books right of his website as a request-donation kind of deal, I would recommend this to support his ministry! I would also recommend buying a few extra copies of OTYCDIH to give away to your Christian friends who will no doubt want this boldness which you are not going to give up on! In the end, you will wish you witnessed more, NEVER less!
If you have never read any of Mark Cahill's books, I suggest you do! His first book, One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven, challenged me to no end many years ago. Subsequent books (including One Heart Beat Away), have also done that.
This book is no exception. It is a clarion call to Christians who are called to be "watchmen" and to warn people of eternity without Jesus Christ. The author takes the title of the book from Ezekiel 33 where God sets a watchman over the house of Israel to watch I love the author's 1) humility, 2) real life stories, and 3) grounding in God's Word!
If your motivation to be a witness to others has waned as of late, read this book! It will encourage you to be a Biblical "watchman" and warn people before they take their last breath.
This book is inspiring, encouraging and very convicting all rolled up into one. With real life examples, Mark Cahill goes into how to be a "Watchman" for Christ.....basically, how to warn and win souls from hell and make them think about what happens when we die. Only Jesus can save us from hell, but how to share that is well covered in this book. From personal experiences, many Bible scripture quotes, and reactions of people....this really gives me courage to be more open to sharing my faith with others and to up my game in what I perceive to be, our last few years left on earth. I highly recommend this to anyone feeling the urge to share their faith, as well as to those believers who have yet begun to do so.
Very compelling read. The author clearly cares for lost souls! I learned a lot about witnessing techniques from him. Mostly, though, the only requirement needed for Believers to witness is a caring heart. The Lord equips those whom He calls. I hope to be more bold in testifying.
+ Great teachings on true evangelism. He employs many personal stories and anecdotes in order to motivate us to go out of the door and have an entirely different mindset than most Christians have today, who would rather go on a mission trip than speaking to our neighbors.
"After famous comedian George Carlin died, I got on YouTube to watch a few clips of his acts. I could not get through one ten-minute clip without him blaspheming the name of G-d and the name of Jesus. If George Carlin could come back for five seconds to planet earth, it wouldn't be to go on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno or The Late Show with David Letterman. He wouldn't come back and collect a paycheck for doing a stand-up routine at some arena. He would come back for five simple seconds, repent of his sins, become born again, take his last breath and go be with Jesus for eternity. But it is too late for him. But my real question is, who warned him of the judgment to come? What Christian picked up the trumpet and blew it and warned him that he was going to stand in front of the G-d that he was mocking?"
+ Great defense of the Genesis account (Creationism opposing Evolutionism).
+ Rich in Scripture quotations.
+ Almost no questionable endorsements.
NEUTRAL
O Astute discernment on Calvinism and great summary of Dave Hunt's book 'What Love is This'. This is especially remarkable given the fact that he endorsed 12 years earlier Calvinism in his book 'One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven'. But it is strictly incoherent that he still prominently promotes this highly problematic book on his website instead of giving preference to this book.
o The references to Freemasonry in his book 'One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven' have disappeared from this book.
CONS
- Analogous to his book 'One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven' (which does repeat some of the stories found in this book), he also praises himself and his generousity.
- While he correctly opposes Calvinism in the book, he repeatedly endorses Hudson Taylor, a Presbyterian who was (one of) the key figure(s) in introducing Calvinism to China. 8 out of 11 direct family members died and he was made a cripple for many months, things which are rather indicators that something was fundamentally wrong with Taylor no matter all the great things we read about him.
- He teaches the Old Covenant tithing, while explicitly referring to the passage speaking to the priests in Malachi. There are other more suitable passages for the concept of giving / free will offering, which is a fundamentally different concept than giving under compulsion.
- Endorsement of William Booth (founder Salvation Army; strong feminism of his wife; concept of 'Aggressive Christianity' which inspired Deborah Green to commit horrendous crimes)
QUOTES
"In all four G‑spels and in the book of Acts, more than 80% of the witnessing encounters occurred between total strangers!"
"As one guy said to me, "If you are not fishing, you are not following!"
"Did you notice what Jesus doesn't say? He doesn't say: 'Come follow me, and I will make you a great athlete / student / millionaire / your kids healthy. He says nothing of the sort. [...] We fish for men. We fish for souls. That is what a Christian does."
"Sharing your faith is not a presentation, but a conversation."
Tried of a life of complacency, the same ole, same ole? Nothing has changed inside of you after you confessed and trusted in Jesus as your Lord? Examine your heart truthfully in front of the one true God! Read His Word, read this book, it will help you to pick up your cross and follow Jesus Christ into the deep. There's more to life than what you have settled for.

This book is unreadable! Take about 200 anecdotes, pepper them with Bible verses ripped from their context, and boom! A scrabbling attempt to both guilt and scare you into doing things the way the author does! He comes across as snarky and superior! But, he fails to answer the basic question - what in the text makes us think that God's message to Ezekiel was given as a command to anyone who believes ?! Oh, and there are lots and lots of exclamation points!
He would have done well to get a real editor. He would have done even better to just promote better books on evangelism (Packer, Dever, Little, Stiles, and Comfort all have great ones) instead of trying to market himself. I appreciate Cahill's heart for evangelism, but this book doesn't help the cause. Skip it.
