About the author

After escaping retail hell, I trained as a journalist and worked in newspapers and magazines before becoming a drone in the book publishing hive. I worked for Harlequin, The Canadian Book Information Centre, Lester & Orpen Dennys and Cannon Books in various capacities in editorial, publicity and sales. I learned a lot about what not to do. (All of the above companies are dead and gone except, of course, for Harlequin. I didn't kill them. It was suicide.)

I went over the wall again and worked a few miracles in the field of alternative medicine. Then "they sentenced me to 20 years of boredom, for trying to change the system from within." (Identify that quote and we are inextricably, irrevocably friends.)

Writing full-time now, I tell everyone I'm "in Suspense." I hope you read, review and enjoy my books.

I'm not a big fan of "how to" non-fiction, but as an Indie Author myself, I couldn't resist the temptation to get a copy just to see if Chute's information is any different than all the other books out there on the subject. The title alone was enough to entice me to pick it up and start reading. Chute doesn't offer instruction but rather inspiration and support to other Indies who desire to break new ground in the ever changing landscape of the publishing industry.

Right up front the author suggests his readers do two things right away. First, he builds a case for why independent authors should pay it forward and support one another with what they have discovered while producing and selling their novels. Second, he challenges first time authors to match the reading of this cleverly presented guide to match him chapter for chapter (i.e. read one and write one).

Though I've stumbled upon several of the suggestions Chute shares, I wished I'd have read this single source before self publishing my first novel. It would surely have saved lots of heart ache and anxiety, but most importantly, I would have had a lot more fun experiencing the adventure of writing and publishing for the first time.

First timers and veteran authors should take the time out to read this short and inspirational reference for writing and publishing fiction independently.

Great resource

This holds a wealth of information within. Why 4 stars? I did skip quite a bit. But, after the ink is dried, this does contain some bits of advice and Somme humorous tales.

Whacky but good

I have never come across a non-fiction book that is written more like a story. I found it refreshing, and the writing style does not take away from the valuable information presented.

I read on a Kindle, and make notes as I go along so that I can reread sections or specific advice later. With this book, there are 29. "Write to delight yourself and hope that you find someone who agrees with your take", and "Write each chapter as if it's a short story" are but two of these.

There are also numerous tips that I did not mark, but implemented immediately.

The book does not only cover writing, but also includes publishing and marketing your book. I will read it again, as I'm sure I'll pick up a number of golden nuggets that I missed the first time round.

I've been reading Robert Chazz Chute's blog for some time, and these chapters are reminiscent of his style--witty, informative, and well written.

Even as a writer who's been at this for a while, I found Mr. Chute's words to inspire. He also has the ability to get his points across quickly and succinctly.

No matter where you are in your writing journey, you will learn something from this book.

Are you an Indie writer? This is Robert Chazz Chute's book of encouragement on staying the course as an Indie writer. Overall, I liked his style and his advice on writing and branding and to just keep going. This book is a series of his blog posts so keep that in mind as you read it.
