The Steam Runner

Rate this book
Nikol Tesla Bradwyn, or to her friends and family—Tes, lives in a present world very much unlike our own. Knowledge, science, and physics are the peak of human acceptance; chess reigns as the supreme sport where football is something only a laborer would watch. Free running is even less accepted, but Tes doesn't care about that. Night after night it's that love of running that brings her back to race across buildings and through pipelines illegally. It's the only thing she understands when words just want to run across a page in school, or numbers want to jumble like a mess in her head. It's not her world, not really. Little does she realize how true that is until a crew of time travelers will change her life forever...

I used to like watching James Bond movies … I'm not talking about Daniel Craig post-reboot, not that I have any issue with those. BUT … with Sean Connery or Roger Moore, they'd begin with some action scene which would (usually) tie in to the plot, although it might not be immediately obvious how that happens. Then, you'd meet the villain in some innocent setting, there'd be a few skirmishes while the true depths of the plan were revealed little by little. Finally, James would lead a small squad – occasionally a large force – against the villain and HIS army just before their master plan came to fruition.

Kit Roe SWEARS she wasn't thinking about this when she plotted her first full-length novel, “The Steam Runner”. I wasn't thinking about it when I read it, either. BUT afterwards, while trying to think about why I liked the book so much, I realized it played out just like one of Cubby Broccoli's Bond movies! IF Bond was a high-school girl in a Victorian-esque steampunk setting. And IF the organization he – uh, she – was recruited for was a time-traveling band of adventurers instead of the British government. And IF it turned out that the arch-villain was ACTUALLY [censored to prevent spoilers].

It was obvious to me that author Roe was attentive to detail. She made sure that her plot had plenty of action, BUT also left some quieter moments for the reader to catch his or her proverbial breath and absorb what they'd just read. It was obvious that they avoided a common pitfall of indie writers, and made sure that they AND a trusted editor(s) reviewed for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting. (Yes, they may have missed a couple – but virtually any book you can find at your local or on-line bookstore, no matter how famed the author or large the publishing house, will have a couple of slip-ups that escaped the highly paid team of editors.) And, most important, it was obvious that she truly cared about the characters she described – after all, how can anyone, no matter how talented, hope to make US love that which they do not??

Kit, if I can make a request? Stop wasting your time with things like “sleeping”, or “eating”, or “having a life”. We WANT and NEED the next book in this series, and you NEED to get it ready as soon as humanly possible. And since you'll thankfully be applying the same level of care to that follow-up, you need to be working on it NOW!!

4 ½ stars, rounded down to 4 since half stars are not permitted.

DISCLOSURE: I won an electronic copy of this book via an on-line contest. It has since been replaced with a traditional trade paperback version, signed and personalized, no less!
