When Marietta Becker goes undercover at a singles dance to investigate the homicide of five men, she thinks she's discovered one of the saddest places she's ever encountered. When her husband suddenly appears and is immediately recognized by the dance regulars, Marietta realizes there are a lot of reasons to want to kill someone. A short story.
Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Nancy Springer moved with her family to Gettysburg, of Civil War fame, when she was thirteen. She spent the next forty-six years in Pennsylvania, raising two children (Jonathan, now 38, and Nora, 34), writing, horseback riding, fishing, and birdwatching. In 2007 she surprised her friends and herself by moving with her second husband to an isolated area of the Florida panhandle, where the birdwatching is spectacular and where, when fishing, she occasionally catches an alligator.

I normally don't read too many short stories, but this short story was very witty and entertaining.
Marietta Becker was working undercover at a singles dance, to investigate the homicide of five men. Of all assignments to get...she would never go to a singles dance because she was married. But somewhere in this room was the murderer-all victims of a serial killer, "The Crusher". The entrance card for the single dances, had been found in the wallets of two of the five crusher victims, two other victims were on the list and the fifth victim was married.
Her husband,George, and her had work schedules that were never compatible. They were like ships in the wind.
And then feeling like a piece of meat at the meat market, at this singles dance, with all the men staring at your assets or lack of...it happened...the unthinkable...her husband walked in. She was then told that George was a regular. This explained why he always worked late on singles night.
She had to get out of there fast, so not to blow her cover. She made a dash for it. The Crusher would take care of him.
Oh, I so admire a short story like this one, with a clear purpose, clarity of tone, and closure! Protagonist Maggie is on an undercover assignment involving singles dance events, to find a killer of five males. Law enforcement has been stumped, and is looking for some very hefty and powerful killer. Maggie, however, operates on women’s intuition and just good common sense, and she listens-very important. She figures out what’s going on, and more importantly, she discovers an essential secret about her own life-and then leaves it to “poetic justice” to solve. Excellent!

Marietta Becker is working undercover at a singles dance trying to discover who is responsible for the deaths of five very different men, but who most of them had some connection to the singles dance. She’s just getting an idea of who The Crusher might be when in walks her husband, someone the other women say is a regular. After being faithful all their years of marriage, of her holding up her end of the relationship and all those times he was telling her he was working late, well…let’s just say she decides to make sure he’s the next target.
This short story is very well-written, the characters are well-fleshed and I didn’t figure out who the killer was. The singles dance was kinda depressing. And Marietta’s husband…hmmm, he’s a jerk, but does he deserve to die? Because Marietta sets him up to do just that. And her being a cop and all. Sort of goes against everything she believes in and I wonder if she’ll regret it later. After it’s too late. A quick read that will test your skills as a detective.
This is the second story I’ve read by this author and just like the previous one, it was a fun read. It’s amusing and packs a lot into its eleven pages. Also like the previous story, this one is filled with quirky characters that shell out snappy dialogue. There’s a twist in the tale and the only thing I didn’t like was that the ending felt abrupt. This story could have gone on longer to round out the plot and give us more insight into these great characters the author has created.
If you’re in the mood for a mystery but short on time, this is definitely a good pick for you.
