Gabby Herrera cannot compete with her responsible, obedient, perfect student sister and her parents do not understand or accept the C-average, basketball-loving Gabby.
This is a really good book. I think some day it would be one of the best books ever. I choose to read this book because I think it shows how u shouldn't do drugs or doing anything that your not supposed to do. This whole story is manly about how gabby has a uncle that is gay and she's the only one that knows that he is. Then once gabby encourages her uncle mike to come out to the rest of the family he does. But then her uncle ends up killing his self by hanging his self in his moms garage.
I finish read this book is about the girl name Gabby she had hard time control herself for being in bad situations with her family, but in the end everything was ok she still thinking about all the good time they spend together and Mike was her favorite uncle he died by killing himself.
Gabby Herrera feels like an outsider in her own family -- her perfect sister especially. She feels that they don't understand that trying hard sometimes just isn't enough. Through a series of mistakes and poor choices, drinking and partying too much, fits of temper and outbursts, as well as her favorite uncle's suicide and her own attempted suicide, Gabby learns that she is a victim of depression, the hard way. Part of the Gravel Road series of books from Saddleback, this little book will hit home with anyone who knows someone who suffers from depression, or is themselves depressed. With the limited vocabulary found in many high interest/low level books, the author still manages to bring to life the emotional turmoil of Gabby's life. This book brings to the fore a subject that is still stigmatized in our society, making the topic of depression come sadly to life for the reader.
First of all, let me just say, the main character is a, (excuse my language) BITCH. She has everything. Caring parents, friends, coach, siblings, teachers, a talent for basketball...yet, she feels her life sucks. She expects her parents to be ok with her c average report card, and her dad tells her to quit basketball till she gets her grade up. Her mom even gets her a job. What does she do? Yup, you guessed it, party with older kids, slaps her dad, calls him a bastard, repeatedly disses her parents, and yup, does drugs.
Don't get me wrong, i love the author. Possibly the book too, its just the main character that annoys me. I guess there wouldn't be a plot if she didn't have an annoying attitude toward life, right? At least i have strict parents. Thank god.
This was a quick easy read for me. I recommend this to so many teens/young adults who have stress in their lives. It shows that mental illness can be overcome. I couldn't put this book down. I am definitely going to have my 20 year old son read this. I wish I would have known about this book when he went through a difficult break up!
A quick read with events that escalate so quickly it's hard to be believed. However, the whip-fast pace and accessible writing make this a surefire bet for reluctant or struggling readers. There's some resolution at the end, but Higgins leaves some of it open for readers to think about.
Another book picked because it will be especially appealing for my reluctant readers. There is a lot that happens in this short book with issues involving drugs, alcohol, sex, sexuality, religion, friendship, and depression. For me though it is like most reluctant reader books, no depth and no character to love.
Gabby make mistake all the time in her life. She try two time to kill herself because she think if doing that solve all the problem in her life. In the end of the book she try to be responsible girl.
