The Power of Pentecost

Rate this book
"The Power of Pentecost" by Dr. John R. Rice may be the most exhaustive and complete Bible study on the question of the fullness of the Spirit written in modern times. It is a new and vigorous scriptural analysis of the meaning of Pentecost. Here is a scholarly yet simple and lucid discussion of the terms "filled with the Spirit," "baptized with the Spirit," "the gift of the Spirit," and kindred terms. Basing every conclusion on the Scriptures and harmonizing perfectly all of the Scriptures that bear on this matter, this is a kindly and thoroughly satisfying analysis of the tongues matters, as well. Topics The Lost Secret of God's Power, Misunderstood Pentecost, Spirit-Filling Empowers Witnessing, Speaking With Tongues, How to Be Filled With the Spirit, The Biblical Dynamics of a New Testament Church, The Keys to Successful Ministry. It is the sincere desire of the publishers that the dear Lord in Heaven may use this book to prepare Christians everywhere for revival and soul winning.

I do not agree with the basic idea presented in this book, which comes close to the "second work of grace" concept of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. And Rice had a tendency to play "bible corrector" at times. So, why only deduct 1 star?

Because the GOOD of this book outweighs any doctrinal failings. And as I have shared this with several people over the years, none have actually fallen into the "second work" error., And, like me, most of those who I know that have read this work have simply been encouraged to live even more self-less and Spirit-filled with a major emphasis on preaching the Gospel to the lost.

So, while not holding to a definite second work or anything of the kind, I do believe that most Christians need to come to a moment as a Christian believer where we KNOW that we are submitting to God's Spirit and living, as Paul urges us in Ephesians 5:18 to "be filled with the Spirit".

John R. Rice introduced multitude to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and motivated many thousands to be a "soul winner". He preached a Gospel message calling men to "REPENT and believe the Gospel". That is why his influence on his generation was so dramatic and reached decades beyond his own years.

Although it has been nearly two decades since I read this book through, I can still remember some of the pertinent points and illustrations the author utilized.
