Addison Carter was hired by Magnolia Oil to work as their company doctor in Healdton, Oklahoma. In 1917, oil companies didn't hire women to work for them, so that alone was quite a miracle. At least it was until she arrived from eastern Arkansas with an ego the size of Texas and dreams twice as large, only to have them all shredded to pieces in ten minutes when the directors of the oil company informed her they thought she was a male with a name like Addison.

She was sitting on the bench outside the drugstore waiting for her ride to take her back to Ardmore to catch the train back to Arkansas when Tilly Anderson sat down beside her. In less than an hour, Addison found herself at the Evening Star ranch setting Tilly's cantankerous cousin Tucker Anderson's broken leg and suturing the gash in his hand. Just as suddenly, she was offered the job of caring for him until he healed. Anything beat going back to Arkansas with her deflated ego and shattered dreams so she took on the job.

Tucker had his ideas about women. They should live to serve and obey the male species and, rather than endure a lifetime with one like either of his cousins, Tilly and Clara, he'd be a bachelor until he reached the pearly gates of Heaven. Then he broke his leg and the two cousins hired a female doctor to take care of him. He figured he'd died and gone straight to hell.

Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!

Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.

I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.

I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.

Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!

I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.

Happy reading!

Evening Star is a Drifters and Dreamers romance by Carolyn Brown. It is an unusual story and is set in the early 1900’s near Healdton, Oklahoma.
Addison Carter is angry. Here she finally got a job as a doctor and within minutes looses it simply because she is a woman. The executives at Magnolia Oil fired her immediately for being a woman. Now she is waiting for someone to take her to Ardmore where she can catch a train back home. Her brothers and Father will gloat since they didn’t want her to be a doctor anyway. She is a good doctor, second in her class. Won’t anyone give her a chance?
As she is headed to the café for some hot chocolate, Tilly Sloan runs into her and they begin to talk. Tilly is astounded that she is a doctor but not surprised that Magnolia Oil executives fired her. As they walk to the café together to get hot chocolate, Tilly’s cousin Clara drives up and insists Tilly come with her to Ardmore to get a doctor. Their cousin Tucker fell off the barn and broke his leg at least. Tilly insists that Addison come with them to the ranch and treat Tucker. She is much closer and he needs help now.
Tucker might need help; but he definitely doesn’t want it, especially from a woman. He doesn’t think women should be doctors and doesn’t hesitate to tell Addison that. However, when Clara and Tilly offer her a six week job to stay at Evening Star and tend to Tucker and the chores too. Addison jumps at the chance since it means not going home. Is she tough enough to last the six weeks with Tucker? What will happen when the six weeks is over?

This is the WORST researched book I have ever read.
It purports to take place in during WWI in 1917. BUT:
1) The doctor pulls out a tetanus shot for the injured character. Which did not exist. A quick wikipedia search: "The first inactive tetanus toxoid was discovered and produced in 1924. A more effective adsorbed version of the vaccine, created in 1938, was proven to be successful when it was used to prevent tetanus in the military during World War II."
2) The doctor runs out to the "pickup truck". This term was coined in 1925 by Henry Ford.
3) The doctor "grabs the car keys" before running to the pickup truck. Cars in 1917 were crank started. They might have had a single key, to connect the circuit, but no car would have more than one key.
The dialogue sounds very 1980s, not 1910's.
This is in the first few chapters. As well as a bewildering introduction to many characters, all flat, is the reason I will not be finishing this book.
Would give zero stars if I could. Will not read another by this author.

I enjoyed this quick read very much. I do wish that it would have been a bit longer as I feel like Tucker and Addison needed a bit more to their love story.I love Carolyn Brown's books so much! This was a story with great humor and plenty of bantering. Addison is a female doctor trying to find a place to open her own hospital in a time that not ready to accept women working outside the home. Tucker is a man who feels a woman's place should be in the home taking care of her family and being ever so obedient. Tucker is not at all happy when his family hires Addison to be his personal doctor after he falls off the roof and injures himself to the point that he requires round the clock care.

Tried up with a ribbon

If you've read the first two books of this trilogy, you know Healdon, Oklahoma, where the women are all gorgeous, the men are all rugged, and the (apparently) only child in town is perfectly behaved but sassy and inquisitive. You also know that, despite (or maybe because of) his modern cousins, Tucker Anderson hates redheads and professional women. So it will be no surprise that red-haired Addison Carter, M.D. shows up in the first sentence. Carolyn Brown works the prescription with her usual charm and sense of humor.

Olden Times

As I was reading this book I decided that I'm glad I wasn't growing up during that era. Being a woman during those years was very different then what we have today. Holding a job usually done by a man was basically unheard of as well as working after being married. However, the young lady who had become a doctor fought hard for her rights and won plus fell in love with a gentleman who at first believed in what was happening in those times. A very nice story. Good book.

Winner!

I've read so many Carolyn Brown books I've begun talking like one of her characters. This morning I told my good friend that if I had any gumption if some work done instead of reading Evening Star. I love her sassy ladies that argue with the best of them. They are intelligent, loving and not afraid to stand up for themselves . Best of all they choose men as strong as they are. All in all a great read.

And the 3rd couple is:

A female doctor and a cranky rancher who says women can’t be doctors just like the oil company that fired her on site are thrown together when he falls off his barn roof and breaks his leg and slices up his hand. Despite his protests, the ladies in his family hire the lady doctor to fix him up and care for him. It’s quite a story and a great continuation of the series. Look out for the serial killer near the end too!

A fun series, worth the read

This series needs to be read in sequence. Its a delightful trio of historical fiction, filled with fun tension as three cousins find their way to happily ever after. The characters have unique strengths and weaknesses that keep the reader involved. It almost made me want to go back in time and live that sort of hardy life. Read Morning Glory first, then Sweet Tilly, then Evening Star.

The Doctor and the Farmer

Enjoyable story! With the fighting between them going on you have to know the loving will be just as strong, or stronger. Dr. Addison (Addie) Carter, by circumstances, was hired as a personal doctor to the grouchiest farmer in the area, Tucker Anderson. He had fallen off the roof and broke a leg and cut his hand. There is one thing about this book that I didn’t like at all. The swearing. It would have been twice as fun reading without it.

Good story but way too many errors!

I enjoyed the book, enjoyed the whole series even though it was pretty repetitive. But at one point in this book the same whole paragraph repeated itself at the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. Way too many typo’s (example: mouth instead of month). This book needs some drastic editing!

Another great book by this author!

I normally only read three or four books by an author because by that time I'm used to the author's style of writing and want a change of pace.

Not so with this author. I think this is my seventh book and they have all been different. This may be the best one yet. This one had a sharp twist which I enjoyed immensely.

Sizzling and Sassy

I enjoy all of Carolyn Browns books and down to earth characters - especially the sassy females, but this story with the female doctor and the discrimination she faced, but was able to overcome and the appearance of the a Black Widow, took this story to greater depths.

A new doctor in Healdton

Addison had come to town to work as a doctor for the oil co.Apparently they did not want a lady doctor. As she plans to leave an accident at the Evening Star ranch leaves Tucker Anderson with a broken leg and an injured hand, Addison fixes him up and Clara and Tilly hire her to care for him while he recuperates.

A perfect romance

I love Carolyn Brown novels. I always know I'm in for a treat when I find a new one. This one was great! Strong self sufficient heroine in a time when women weren't always allowed to make their own way. Love how this book made me be able to imagine what it was like before women could vote.

Evening Star By Carolyn Brown

Five stars, cute storyline, Addison was a doctor in the early 1900's. Her profession as a female causes problems. Tucker was a conservative traditionalist woman were taught stay at home. But he got hurt and Addy had to stay and help, the bitter arguing didn't help. But it only fuel an attraction, which they eventually realized was love. Good w.

The Anderson girls found true love. Tucker didn't think love was in the cards for him. Doc met him after he fell off a roof and things happened and love conquered all.

Loved it. Couldn't stop reading till it was finished. Great story teller Carolyn Brown. I enjoyed the time frame and the people.

This was a very good book. The time period was so realistic I had to keep reading to find the end a little too soon.

Evening Star

I love the title. The book is very enjoyable; Carolyn is an amazing story teller. Her characters are fabulous. The banter will have you laughing out loud. Most of her books seem to have an elderly woman that is speaks her mind and warms your heart.

pleasant read

A pleasant and straightforward story about Addy and Tucker and their disagreements. Loved her attitude towards life, especially after she was not given the job she came out to do for the oil company.

Very good

A really good book without pages of bad sex. Tucker is a very bad patient and a grouch. Addison is his doctor who puts up with a lot of bitching from him. Of course everything turns out okay.

women’s fright for rights

Very good story of how women have had to work and fight for their right to work a job they want and live a life with a husband and share that life and not just wait on her family all day and night. Didn’t want to put this book down.
