Robbie is an artistic teenage boy who lives with his mother and misses the father he never met. Quite by accident, he discovers a special glitter crayon that draws invisible objects into existence. While escaping some terrifying thugs, Robbie draws a door to hide behind and enters a portal to a new world. Robbie is intrigued by magical, fairy tale characters and makes wonderful friends as he explores the Land of Legends. Trying to find his way back home leads to a treasure hunt adventure limited only by the imagination where Robbie discovers streets can be made of gold, money grows on trees, and fairy tales never die. This new land is not without perils as Robbie narrowly escapes a wolf, nearly drowns in a river, survives a terrifying night of lurking werewolves, and comes face to face with a dragon. Through his travels, Robbie learns about true friendship, sacrifice, and love as he discovers a treasure greater than he ever dreamed.
This is the perfect book to read with middle grade students. Some of the characters are new and unique, but others have already been introduced throughout the stories and nursery rhymes kids learned when they were just infants. There's enough action to keep any child engaged. This would be a clear pick for any parent to read with a child, one chapter each night, before going to bed.
While I've never been a fan of fantasy (check my other reviews-- there aren't many, if any), this book was the the actualization of my childhood fantasy world- a world where the characters of my favorite books come to life! Through the journey of a Wizard of Oz-like quest, Rosensteel takes us on a journey through our literary imagination. I will be sure to buy copies for both my nieces and one for the bookshelf at school, too. I can't wait for the next adventure...
