In the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains, Ash Grove High School for the Performing Arts draws the brightest and most talented teens. But beneath the peaceful surface, supernatural forces are at work...
When ordinary high-school junior Joy Sumner visits a graveyard at midnight on a dare, she doesn’t expect to end up sharing a kiss with brooding teen model Tanner Lindsey. And she definitely doesn’t expect to make an enemy of Tanner’s seductive, sinister mentor, the ageless supermodel Melisande—who may not be entirely human—or to find that her sleepy little corner of North Carolina is buzzing with supernatural energy.
While Joy fights to free Tanner from Melisande’s grasp—and from his own self-doubt—she finds that she’s pregnant. And when Tanner’s love for her puts his life in danger, will she be able to rescue him and save their future together?
Amanda DeWees received her PhD in English from the University of Georgia and wrote her dissertation on 19th-century vampire literature—the perfect training, although she didn’t know it at the time, for writing Victorian gothic romance novels. Her books include With This Curse, winner of the 2015 Daphne du Maurier Award in historical mystery/suspense, and the Sybil Ingram Victorian Mysteries series.
In a character driven plot like this I am usually weary. I find that authors make 14 year old sounds like 50 year olds and I am over yesterday's hero complexes. I think by page 15 I knew that this was no ordinary YA. Joy is a girl any girl can identify with. She is not a w.itch nor is she a brat, she is normal girl who will do stupid things to be accepted by stupid people.
Here we move onto the main male protagonist. Tanner. Oh boy, I sure could put a face and a body to this one. Here not overly much emphasis was placed on him which was nice and refreshing and we learned what we needed via Joy.
Aah.... our favourite person to hate in the book -- - The ever so perfect Melisande. I consider any author as accomplished the moment they can make me feel something towards their characters such as with Melisande.
The school made an terrific backdrop acting as a character all on it's own muting and amplifying the supernatural facets of the story all at once. I know one thing, I am glad I own the rest of the series already.
Too start with I wasn't entirely sure where this story was going but then I caught on and couldn't put it down. I look forward to whatever is in store for this group
I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. After the first pages, I realized that this isn't an ordinary book. The characters were well developed and the rolls they played were very true to life. You can identify with the characters easily, especially with Joy. Amanda DeWees did an amazing job with this book and from my point of view, her writing it’s classy. The book starts with sixteen year old Joy Summer, who is a student at the academy Ash Grove. Joy’s mother passed when she was just a little girl, and leaving her with her father who is taking a leave of absence from his teaching job to fight cancer. Joy is struggling to find her own way in life, not really wanting to follow her mothers footsteps in piano, but knowing she doesn't have the physical attractiveness to become an actress she is searching for a purpose in life. After accepting a dare from one of the school bullies, she finds Tanner in the cemetery. He is very attractive, but he claims he is dead. All she went in for was a wild rose from the grave of the founder of the school. But now she has a purpose in life, she found it, and she is going to fight for it. Joy and Tanner find the mysterious rose garden and their lives take on a whole new meaning for each of them. The only way for those two to have a future is for him to leave the devil behind, but there is a problem. She has something to hold on him that no one understands or knows about. Joy is going to have to figure out this puzzle and break that hold that is keeping Tanner prisoner. With the old school being built on the belief of mystical powers and protections from evil spirits, she must go before the school council and ask for help. Joy is determined that her love for Tanner and their rose is worth every battle against the demon spirits. Joy is a sweet, optimistic, and feisty girl who takes on her dreams, and challenges with a grace to be admired. I got to like the characters and loved the writing style. I am a huge fan of the mystical world and this took it to a new level. There is no other book like this one, I honestly loved it! If you like reading paranormal romance I recommending picking up The Shadow and the Rose, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to reading the next book in the series Casting Shadows. - See more at: http://thebooktown.blogspot.ro/2013/0...
I received this book from the author to give an honest review.
First let me say I LOVE the cover, it is amazing. Very down to earth. Now on to the story. If you love YA paranormal than this is the book for you it is filled it with young love, some magic, and the paranormal. I found myself staying up way to late to see what was going to happen next.
Joy is a feisty, sweet and mature for her age sixteen year old. Who has lost her mother and her father is away from the school that he is an English teacher at. Ash Grove is a special school for those that have a talent whether it be a dancer, actor, or a musician this school is the place for you. Joy knows she is not beautiful as those that attend the school but she does not let that bother her much, she has a couple of friends that she loves hanging with and is okay with not being in the popular crowd.
One day Melisande comes into town and she is a big celebrity and she has a special guy in her life named Tristan. Joy and Tristan meet by accident in a graveyard and that is when their feelings for each other start. But will Melisande let Tristan or Tanner as he was used to be called go away or will she keep him for herself. Joy will fight for Tanner even when others think there is nothing that can be done. Because not only does she love him but she has something that will keep them joined no matter what. On the other hand Melisande has a hidden agenda with Ash Grove and Joy is going to uncover it.
The characters were very well written and I loved reading the dialogue between them all. The only thing I had trouble with is the Melisande for the life of me I just could not pronounce the name so I kept calling her Melissa. There is young love, heartache, magic all rolled up into one.
The Shadow and the Rose by Amanda DeWees tells the story of sixteen year old Joy Summer, a pupil and also the daughter of a teacher at a prestigious performing arts school. When her father is taken into hospital suffering from cancer, Joy is left as a boarder and struggles to fit in amongst the super-glamorous and talented but rather bitchy pupils. Dared to visit the graveyard at midnight, Joy meets Tanner Lindsay, a former pupil of the school turned supermodel. Despite still being a minor, Tanner lives with his mentor (and lover) the ageless and beautiful model, Melisandre. And then the story breaks away from the High School drama and drops us into a strange world full of timeslips, supernatural beings and mysterious rituals – a really exciting, fast-paced paranormal romance.
I really liked Joy. She’s very normal and level-headed (most of the time) and loyal in her love for Tanner. The pupils at the school were well-drawn and Ms DeWees managed to get away from the usual stereo-typical teenage characters. Melisandre was suitably menacing and controlling and the plot was well thought out and explained.
Tanner I didn’t love so much. Without giving away spoilers, he’s got a lot of problems in his past and, OK, he stands up for Joy against Melisandre at the end, but I couldn’t help thinking sometimes Joy deserved better. I understand that there are more books to follow, so hopefully Tanner can redeem himself as the series unfolds.
The book is YA but may be unsuitable for younger readers of the genre as there are sexual implications leading to a teenage pregnancy and some references to smoking.
I received this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Um wow. Apparently I let myself get carried away with all the positive reviews on this book. While this book was not the worst book I have ever read, it was up there on the list. At first it was interesting; Joy seemed like a fun, reckless, energetic character. But then a boy comes along. We are held in mystery of the "paranormal" part of what’s going on for more than 1/2 of the book. The addition of Tristan/Tanner to the mix was awful. What a horrible person he is. He changes who Joy is within a matter of days. All of a sudden, just weeks into "dating" she is in LOVE with him and tells him so. And, OH YEAH! Let’s just have sex with someone we hardly know, but love uncontrollably, that we have just met. Good idea 16 year old girl! So smart.
BUT WAIT! It gets even better. Tristan/Tanner disappears overnight to go off with his cougar mentor and leaves poor heartbroken Joy alone….OR IS SHE!?!!?!?
NOPE!!!! She is pregnant. And not only that but she is experiencing sudden paranormal anomalies that have never shown up before now. Great huh? Wow. Amazing!!!
In all honesty I hate giving books bad reviews. I know the authors work hard to write them. But after Joy learned she was pregnant I wanted to quit right there. But I held on hoping it would get better. Now the one thing that was good was the reveal of Melisande. That was kind of neat. But Tanner is a total waste of space and Joy is dumb.
People talk about how bad Twilight was with the “OH MY GOSH I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT HIM!” This book takes that aspect and multiplies it by 1,000. Plus add underage pregnancy and you got yourself a drama! I understand this is a "modern retelling" of Tam Lin but I have no desire to read about a love sick pregnant 16 year old with no real depth. It could have been written better.
This book was provided from the author for honest literary review.
Joy is an average teen in a school filled with extraordinary teens. As a student of Ash Grove, you have to be the best at what you do. It is survival of the fittest for those who seek glory in the performing arts. Joy meets handsome Tanner and the romance begins quickly. Never been one to attract much attention, Joy is amazed that he even wants anything to do with her. Little does she know, this romance could end up costing her either her life or his. Tanner's life is not his own to live. What an awesome story. The characters are simply amazing. My heart ached for Tanner and his nightmare of a childhood. Knowing that je never heard I love you from his parents just ripped my heart put. Then Joy, who can't simply adore her fighting and often fearless spirit. The mark of an exceptional author is one where the reader feels as if they know each of the characters. This is one of those novels. The plot does not disappoint as well. It is fast paced, with just the right mix of romance, adversity, and action. It isn't a predictable novel. In fact, everything I thought would be the conclusion was totally wrong, bit on a good way!!! Even the scenery seemed magical. It was paranormal but realistically so. I can't say enough about how much I really loved this one. I think this is one both the romance fans and the paranormal fans will equally enjoy. I know I loved it. It is a definite must read for anyone who enjoys those genres. I would place this one appropriate for ages 16+ due to some content. THIS IS ONE AWESOME BOOK!!!
My first book from this author and have to admit I don't read an awful lot of YA fiction as sometimes it can be a little too juvenile for my tastes. Not really keen on bratty teenagers if honest and yes I have one of my own! So was very pleasantly surprised when I started to read this as the standard of writing is superb. This may be aimed at a young audience with very little sex or violence but is in no way childish! Written in a manner that draws the reader in to a world that does not seem contrived but almost real. Briefly we read the tale of Joy who is a student at a prestigious school and whilst there she meets a very attractive guy named Tanner. Their attraction is immediate but the author does not rush the young couple into a headlong Love affair. Tanner is heavily involved with a very influential older woman and does not seem in any hurry to break their relationship. Joys puzzled by the seemingly unholy relationship between the two and fights to understand it and perhaps win her man. Great supporting characters add to the mix and a story that leaves this reader wanting more. Maybe you have guessed that I enjoyed this tale! I would happily recommend it although the paranormal story is touched on lightly and i felt the ending a little rushed. I am sure the author has more planned for these characters and hope that we learn more about the supernatural side of the story in any books that follow. I would rate this as a 4 I received a copy of this free in exchange for an honest review
The Shadow and the Rose is a young adult paranormal story. It takes place at a school called Ash Grove for preforming arts in North Carolina. We meet out main character Joy here. She is a student at the school who doesn't quite fit in with the popular crowd as she isn't beautiful, or skinny, or have an amazing skill at the preforming arts. She is also strugging in school and her dad is away for cancer treatement. In a struggle to try and fit in she takes a dare from Sheila, one of the popular girls and takes a trip to the mysterious graveyard to take a wild white rose from the grave of long dead Josiah Cavanaugh's grave. Unbeknownst to her this is also the place that she would meet the troubled man of her dreams Tanner Lindsey. Tanner is currently under the control of his guardian Melisande (whom is also his mentor in modeling) who is very possessive. Will Melisande let this love be? Or will she keep them apart at all cost?
I really enjoyed this book from begining to finish. I love how good it flowed from the pages and made me feel like I was right there the whole time. I loved how the heroine Joy wasn't your average prissy cheerleader that I am so used to seeing in young adult fiction. It made me happy to know that some people can see that beauty isn't just skin deep. I would however say to err on the side of caution for teen readers under 14 or so because of subject matter. I can't wait for the next installment! by Amanda F of www.FaeBooks.co.uk
(2.5 Stars) Despite all of incredible reviews, "The Shadow and the Rose" was a mediocre read for me at best. You see, it is difficult to care about the outcome for characters who are rarely included into chapters. That was the case for me with the relationship between Tan aka Tanner and Joy. He is absent for most of book so not only did I not care about his out some I had a hard time believing he and Joy were truly in love.
Joy is a student as a prestigious academy whose primary focus is on the Performing Arts. Her mother died in a car accident and her father is off getting cancer treatments. As she struggles with all that is own her plate, the students at the academy hear t g at the famous supermodel, Melisande is coming to town. When she arrives she brings her entourage that includes Tan or Tanner, a boy who use to attend her school.
When Tan and Joy begin hanging out together, the students take notice; yet, not everyone is happy about this especially Melisande. Joy and Tan continue to see each other but in secret. Their budding relationship will have everlasting consequences. The question is will Joy or Tan survive?
As I stated, I just didn't really enjoyed this book. The plot was slow moving with very little action and the relationships were cursory at best. I felt Tan was a jerk by the way he treated Joy and I really didn't care what happens to him. It's difficult to say much more without giving away spoilers. Once again, read it for yourself and decide.
While I do not usually read YA Paranormal books, I gave this one a shot because I really enjoyed DeWees' novel "Sea of Secrets" and I'm glad I did.
The humor is wonderful and I really enjoyed the pop culture references throughout this tale of mystery and enchantment. The setting for the story is the mountains of the Southern US and it makes a lovely backdrop for Ash Grove and the locale is certainly not something you see often in the contemporary paranormal genre. It was a pleasant surprise to see an author make use of such a beautiful part of the country in this type of book.
Joy is a perky and down-to-earth lead character with strong disposition, creating a nice variance among the other characters. You identify with Joy immediately and with every twist and turn of the story, you're left guessing if she will overcome the evil that dwells nearby. It's a difficult thing to find in YA books: a character you really, truly care about. DeWees creates a realistic environment and realistic people so it's very easy to become absorbed in the many mysteries surrounding Ash Grove.
I highly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys the YA Paranormal and even those who just enjoy Paranormal Romance or Gothic Romance, this story isn't just for tweeny-boppers who have an Edward Cullen fascination. Can't wait to start the next book. Good show, Amanda!
Awesome read. Joy is a determined young girl and a special school. The school is for talented teens, talented in the arts of dance, music and theater. She has had to move into the dorms because her father has gone to Oklahoma for cancer treatments. One night on a dare she visits the graveyard and meets Tanner. Later, she realizes he is Tristan a super model. He also used to be a student at Ash Grove. Tanner visits Joy occasionally while he is in town with his agent/guardian Melisande. He has an attraction to Joy, but is subconsciously pulled to Melisande-something he can't understand. Joy and Tanner enjoy their stolen time together, but Melisande up and takes off with Tanner/Tristan. Joy experiences some supernatural things around the school. The "council" tells her of the supernatural beings/things surrounding the school. And they discussed that Melisande may not be human. Joy does some investigating of her own, and tries to warn Tanner. But he just can't stop the pull to Melisande and get away. In the end though, Joy and Tanner together break the "spell" Melisande has over him. Amanda DeWees, wrote a great YA book with this one! The characters are good, you even have the overprotective best friend. There is not alot of paranormal in this book, but its there. Mostly from the 60% spot to the end.
ugh. this book. seriously the worst.. I'll be frank, Joy falls in love with a boy who has been seduced by some tiype of "psychic vampire" who sucks the life force from men. but this woman seduced the boy at 16, and he can't leave. but he somehow finds Joy and they sleep together and she finds out she's prgnant but won't tell anyone because she wants to tell the boy first. but the boy is not around. he's with his vampire lover. this book.is so messsed up. not only is the story just stupid, but the deeper implications that a girl will just throw away her innocence to a troubled boy who is sleeping with someone else and then continues to make excuses for him...well this is a girl who has severe mental and, self esteem problems. she has no fsther or mother to guide her, horny girlfriends who dont know anymoreabout life than she does and no direction in her life. so what does she do? get knocked up by the first boy whocomes along. this is not a love story. this is not overcome adversity story. this is not a teen paranormal romance novel. this is sick and twisted and is.everything that is wrong with our society today. I'm digusted that this a book for teens. I refuse to finish it. only had 50 more pages, but I just couldn't. ibut I did have to write a scathing review. don't read this story. you will regret it.
The Shadow and the Rose (Ash Grove Chronicles) (Paperback) This is my first YA Romance read, and I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. I was quickly drawn in the story and to be honest stayed up late last night because I just had to know what would happen. Joy is a sixteen year old girl, with a lot of stuff to deal with like many teen girls go thru. She accepts a dare to visit a graveyard from Sheila, who I guess for a better word her worst enemy at school. She then meets Tanner/Tristan there and they share a brief kiss. She is not sure if she will see him again. Luck/fate would have it she does, but things are not exactly as they seem with Tanner or her school. There a secrets to be learned both about the school and Tanner, and well I don't want to give them away. But I will say this Joy is a sweet, optimistic, and feisty girl. Who takes on her dreams, and challenges with a grace to be admired. I will most assuredly be adding the other books in this series to my to be read list. As well as recommend them to friends and my own fourteen year old daughter who loves YA paranormal romance.
Amanda gave me this book for an honest review. At first i though more supernatural vampires and werewolves but i was totally wrong.
Joy summer is a student at grove school for the elite and talented but not all is at it seems at the school, let alone the visitors that come and move in down the road.
Tristian was a pupil at the school now he's all popular but still has an connection to Joy. Joy can see something in him worth saving. This love story is so moving and pulls the strings on heart. Tristain boss is not willing to let him go and uses her power to keep him close can Joy save him, figure out whats happening at Ash Grove and stop Melisande. read the book and find out the answers you won't be disappointed i promise.
Amanda's writing style brings a fresh and overwhelming take on the supernatural world but not to overbearing and the characters are so amazing. My favourite is Joy herself, after everything she been through she so strong and independent and willing to help others.
Absoluetly love this story and i can't wait for the sequel :)
I kinda liked this book in the beginning, eventhough it was a very innocent and naive YA. Then the more I read the worse it got. The plot is just ridiculous, based in a performing arts school, with a killer supermodel agent and a worthless love interest. The pregnancy storyline was treated terribly (is it not a big deal?) and Tanner was so not worth all the drama. The "I love You's" came way too quickly and I was just annoyed by the end. Good try by the author, but it feels like it was her first book ever, that or it was written for 12 year olds.
It was like reading a version of Teen Wolf the TV show. Ash Grove was basically Beacon Hills and SPOILERS! Statutory rape and teen pregnancy?! What!?! I have no good feels from that...
The Shadow of the Rose, by Amanda DeWees, is an enchanting young adult romance about what it means to love someone, even with all the supernatural obstacles in the way.
Joy Sumner knows she isn’t talented like all the other students, even though she goes to Ash Grove High School, a school for those gifted in performing arts. Even the principle, who has always supported her, sometimes doubts her ability. However, when she goes to the grave of the school’s founder to pluck a rose, based on a rather reckless dare, she meets a young man. It’s seemingly love at first sight, but when she realizes that he is trapped under the thumb of a mysterious yet powerful monster, Joy must find a way to free him of his imprisonment before it’s too late. It’s a classic fairytale in the guise of a modern romance, as DeWees spins of story filled with love and magic.
I can resonate with Joy, even if it was only for a little while. She had self-esteem issues, and although she was kind to others, she was also a target for bullying and the like. After all, a lot of people have asked themselves why she was even at Ash Grove, despite the fact that she tries her hardest. Even so, she still manages to pull through. And when Tanner comes into her life, it’s almost like a dream come true for her. Then there’s her friend, Maddie, who offers a more cynical world view of everything. To be honest, I’d be like her in a sense towards others, especially when I don’t know the situation. While I wouldn’t go as far as misandry, I still can’t help but view her jaded view as more realistic. After all, her best friend just got knocked up by a boy who hasn’t even contacted her the past year, so it’s understandable she might think that. Still, I was happy that Tanner and Joy got together. It was a relief, actually.
The use of beauty in the story was well executed. The rose garden that Joy and Tanner stumbled upon can represent true beauty, mesmerizing, and loving in all its glory. Despite that, the rose is also shrouded in secrecy, and in a way, represents the simple fact that true beauty is something you can’t see. On the other hand, there’s Melisande, who’s outward beauty is shown. However, she’s a rather cruel woman who would throw anyone away, if only it meant that she could live youthfully forever. The same could be said of Shelia and Joy. Although Joy states that she’s plain looking, Tanner, as well as others, could see the beauty inside her, while Shelia is rather shallow, and thus, everyone avoids her. The theme that true beauty is hidden is repeated again even with the school, how positive energies are used to help further the talents of the students. It’s an interesting parallel that goes together with age-old fairytale concepts, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The book was a wonderful read. DeWees reminds readers that there is beauty in the world, even if it doesn’t seem like it at first. What’s more, though there is the prospect of a happy ending, it still takes on a realistic viewpoint, one that reaches out to different readers. As such, I would give this book a rating of a 4.7 out of 5.0 stars, and would recommend it to those who enjoy stories by Gail Levine Carson and Sally Gardner.
For a YA book, this one held my interest all the way through. The addition of some Gothic mystery to the usual teenage angst made it much more interesting than I had expected. However, I doubt that I will buy any more in this series. Sixteen-year-old Joy, a rather plain girl with only a few friends, is studying piano in a private arts boarding school; she is bullied by the more attractive dance students. Her father, normally a teacher at the school, is away for cancer treatments; her mother, who was a successful pianist, died when Joy was much younger. A famous beautiful model, Melisande, has a mansion near the school and invites the students to an open house - they are all agog, hoping she can help them make 'contacts.' One night in a graveyard, Joy meets handsome teenage model Tanner/Tristan, once a student at the school, who is now Melisande's latest protege and lover. They hit it off, Joy finds herself falling in love with him, and surprisingly he seems to reciprocate the feeling. Melisande has an eerie influence on anyone who meets her, and between what Tanner tells Joy and what she finds from research, Joy begins to suspect Melisande is not what she seems. When Samhain approaches, the school board takes additional effort to protect the school grounds from occult tampering, but Joy decides to rescue Tanner herself.
#cookiereads The Shadow and the Rose by Amanda DeWees 🌹 Joy Sumner is a student at Ash Grove High School (a performing arts school). Her father is an English teacher and of course she has to go there. She has zero performing arts skills! And that makes her feel left out. 🌹 One day she is dared to pick a rose from a cemetery. There she meets gorgeous mysterious supermodel Tanner Lindsey and go figure they hit it off. Joy can’t get him out of her head. 😍 Tanner Lindsey is part of Melisandre’s (celebrity) entourage. Melisandre has decided to put her roots in North Carolina (where Ash Grove is located). Tanner is clearly unhappy in this entourage. He wants out but feels a weird pull towards Melisandre. Soon Joy begins to suspect Melisandre is not quite human. Can she rescue Tanner from Melisandre grasp before it is too late? ❤️ This book covers a lot for 250 pages. To me it was too much under story and no where to really do with it. Joy travels back through time but it really doesn’t cover it. But since this is a trilogy I guess there are two books to figure this out. It was cool to learn about succubus. 🌹 Two paws out of four paws. #amandadewees #shadowandrose #corgireads #booksofinstagram #corgiofinstagram #bluemerlecorgi
Not another teen supernatural book! I've had it with vampires (sparkly or not), werewolves, and the ilk. The series that got the trend going were for the most part written fairly well. The late- comers to the party seem derivative at best and are far less well edited, written and proof-read. I am so happy that this book wasn't one of those. It comes at the supernatural from a different angle and with a new bad guy (girl) to be afraid of. I like the characters. Joy and her friends seem like nice kids. They make bad decisions and could definitely use a bit more adult supervision but such is the world of fiction. The adults need to stay out of the way for the kids to live out their stories. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
Beautiful prose and flow but tragic characters. Our 16 year old protagonist gets pregnant and has to face an immortal woman who wants her to die. I don’t like that she had no proper guidance, jumps in bed…bushes with the first guy who she falls in love with and justifies the things she’s going through because of him. Joy was too mature and also very immature. I’m not sure I like the convenience of how easy it was to get rid of the villian or how no proper adult seems concerned that a 16 year old is pregnant or how the supernatural elements seem to be common knowledge to every adult but they don’t bother to protect the kid? Wth.
Story Seemed To Be Heading Somewhere BUT Then The Main Characters Just Didn't Sell Me On The Series. . . .
Note this review will most likely be filled with **SPOILERS** so be forewarned. Normally I hate to spoil anything, but there are some big issues I want to address before a reader spends their time on the book. First this book is posted as Young Adult and to be fair it is in a way, since the characters are all still in high school and are under the age of 18. However, some of the situations they find themselves in are a bit mature for a younger YA audience, so I'd say this is an upper YA book due to content.
The story is told from the main character, Joy Sumner's perspective. Joy is trying to find her artistic niche in the hidden oasis of the Blue Ridge Mountains own Ash Grove High School for the Performing Arts. She feels like the plain Jane in the school where all her friends and peers prepare for stardom. It's upon a dare from the BBBs (Ballet Bitch Brigades) that Joyce finds herself at midnight in the graveyard to retrieve a white rose from the school's founder's grave. What should have been a quick in and out task turns into more when she meets a beautiful stranger in the dark night named Tanner. Later on Joy finds that the hot stranger isn't actually a stranger at all but is an old classmate named Tanner Lindsey, who is now a rising supermodel and the current favorite protege of the superpower actress and model Melisande. Tanner and Joy begin a friendship that turns into a secret relationship, as Tanner reveals his mentor and sometimes lover Melisande is overly possessive and too dangerous to upset in any way. Through the stories Tanner has told of Melisande and the things researched on her own, Joy finds out Melisande may not be entirely human. And on top of all that Joy finds that her special school is actually a hot spot of supernatural energy that could explain a few mysteries.
***WARNING SPOILER VENTING AHEAD*** Soo one of my biggest disappointment was the fact that Joy just went out and did the dirty with Tanner in the dirt. I mean really? Joy was shaping up to be his savior from Melisande by discovering things like why she remained ageless. But then Joy goes and professes her love for Tanner when he's still obviously stuck on, and to, Melisande, he never even said I Love You back, but he sure did say it about Melisande, big hint right there. Then there's the fact that the author didn't even note the couple using protection at the time they made love in the secret garden, which made me instantly think "well, she's gonna get pregnant." And shocker Joy does. That's probably my biggest issue, Joy's pregnancy. She seriously tries to hide it as being fat and gets by mostly on her own, while still hoping to free Tanner so they can live HEA. The HEA part I don't mind as I wanted Joy to have one, but there in the end Joy seems to write everything off as if life is going to be all easy breezy from there on out now that they are together. Oh heck nooo! There isn't a teen mom alive that will say life is heaven once you have a kid at 17, no matter how precious the child is, being a parent is work. Let alone the fact both, Joy and Tanner will need to work on their relationship as a couple, because Tanner will obviously have emotional issues form his time with Melisande. Who btw was a gross cougar/molester (like any old mythological fictional creature) and I'm not even going to touch that issue, since it was covered in the story but big Ewww! ******************************************************************************
Overall, book was okay for a time filler. I found the author's writing style to be fluid at points, but then rushed at others making me double back to read parts twice to ensure I read the section right. The author did an okay job of mixing modern high school drama with magical mayhem. I had hoped for a more realistic ending to the main characters relationship, but I suppose the book needed the extra drama to continue the series. The school drama was great, and on it's own would be an interesting Y.A. book. The magical side of the story was intriguing, but fell flat when it blew up to be more than just about the school the secrets it held and became more about Melisande, and subsequently about freeing Tanner from her evil clutches. However, Tanner as a lead male character was extremely weak and never made me feel enough to pull for Joy to really want him back time and time again . . . again. Yes, I wanted Joy happy because her life needed some great happiness after all the bad cards she'd been dealt, but really I wanted her best friend William to start liking her, or heck even her gay guy friends would make for a better companion. By the end of the book I was okay with the story being over and I feel fine with not going further in the series. The school's magic mystery was too under exposed for me to be fully intrigued to read further in the series, as it seems they are all safe. So if you want to read about high school drama that includes relationships, dating problems, popularity, sexual curiosity, and a sense of family all while trying to hopefully out preform everyone on stage, but there's possibly something evil wanting to take your life and soul, then this book might be okay for you to try but I'm happy I got it for free.
I'm going to read every adaptation of Tam Lin on goodreads, just watch me.
This one was pretty good - always appreciate it when a Tam Lin adaptation tells me straight up in the blurb that it's going to go whole-hog with the pregnancy side of the story, helps calibrate my expectations.
The "surprise! magic is real!" side of the story was pretty weak, but hey, it's Tam Lin, we're just here for the Feisty Girl Saves Beautiful Man In Distress plot.
dnf for me ....... the reason for that is simple ...... the protagonist doesnt have to be perfect but in the first idk 40 percent, the author tells us uncountable times how not perfect she is that i thought she must look somewhat like an orc from herr der ringe >_> and that just didnt do it for me sorry ;D
Joy is one determined young lady. I really liked the fact that she doesn't come across as a whiny, woe is me teen. Tanner his character could use some work, lucky for him, Joy believed in him.
This was definitely a fun one! It’s definitely an interesting story. With a fantasy twist, DeWees explores what real, modern society doesn’t acknowledge most of the time: men are victims of abuse and manipulation too.
The Shadow and the Rise deserves a give star rating for its fast paced plot. The characters were believeable. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
