I'm not sure what happened from book 1 to book 2 but this sadly was such a let down. I hated all the characters I enjoyed in the first book.

The Veiled Prince was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 and when the ARC finally dropped in my inbox (thank you SO MUCH Ivy!!), I was giddy with anticipation and joy. While the previous book in the series, The Veil, didn't really end on too much of a cliff hanger, I had become so attached to the characters and needed more resolution that I couldn't wait to dive back in and get reacquainted with my favorites.
Synopsis (no spoilers)
Lina Calder might have her brother back, but he is still spellbound. Driven by love, both for her brother, Lina is determined to break whatever spell holds him entranced, even if that means facing the very stuff of her nightmares and threatening the fragile healing of her shattered heart. Thrown back into the realm of the Fae, Lina leans on the support of her found family to guide her as she explores her own strength and magic, but not even the strongest of spells can mend a broken heart and while Lina herself continues to grow in strength, her heart is still torn between the love she lost and the love she left.
Like The Veil, The Veiled Prince is an immediate hit. I could not put it down. From cackling at the dialogue (omg Syrena and Xavier!) to literally clutching my heart as it ached (Soren! Lina! Hale!) and gasping at the violence and adventure, I sped through this beast and when it was over, I felt satisfied, but could always go back for more. These characters are so engaging and fun, I can't get enough of them! I was so impressed by the way the author puts them into scenarios where I cannot for the life of me figure out how they're going to get out of it, BUT THEN SHE DOES. It's just mind boggling. I love her solutions to the problems and the way she writes. She occasionally switches the POV and I could not be more here for it.
And the spice. Did I mention the spice? If The Veil was sriracha, The Veiled Prince is a ghost pepper on steroids. Exquisitely written and beautifully done, the spice is not gratuitous (well, maybe not till the end....) and thoroughly satisfying.
I am so in love with this series. It's everything I really wanted These Hollow Vows and These Twisted Bonds to be. From the strong female characters, the witty banter, the heartbreak, the adventure, the love triangle, the found family, it's just bursting with everything I look for in fantasy/adventure and I am a huge fan.
Enormous thank you to Ivy Brannon for the ARC. Do yourself a favor and read The Veil before The Veiled Prince comes out on August 31st! It's a serious don't miss.

FULL SPOILERS - The infuriating ending has entered this book into my top ten worst-read list. I chose to give this 2 stars and not 1, only because I had enjoyed the first three quarters, despite Lina being portrayed as slutty (hint: you can like sex without being a slut).

Hale was great, Soren was annoying and prioritised his feelings over Lina's but she still chose both. It's magically fine that Soren cursed Hale to never touch Lina, because Hale likes to watch(?).

Disappointed does not even begin to cover my emotions.

I loved the first book, it was super fast pace and grabbed onto you at a break neck speed and very rarely let up. This book had a lot more world building because we got to actually be present and not fleeing for our lives with Lina... for a bit ;). So there was time to settle in as she was also settling in. There are new characters I absolutely adored, like Veshti!!! Omg Veshti has my heard and I hope she comes back for the third book. As for the spicy *deep meaningful breath* let's just say, I actually GASPED at parts and the twist at the end... I never saw that coming and honestly, I'm here for it. Not my normal go to but I love how the author set everything up and the reasoning for why it went that way. I'm for sure gonna read the third book when that's out, I'm curious what other new enjoyments I'll find. And as always, I love that every character is flawed in some way and that way as the reader I get a reward as they grow but also get to choose who's morally gray flags are actually green or red flags for me... and I was surprised with myself with who I went for in this read. Also also!!! When you get to the upside down forest, I actually cried it was so beautifully described and such an amazing moment, I don't want to spoil it but I reread that a couple times I loved it so much.

I am literally sat here speechless typing this, no idea how I will get a full review out of myself! First of all, I want to say The Veiled Prince was so incredible, Ivy Brannon’s writing has grown even since The Veil. The characters are all so well defined and unique and I love them all and want to give them hugs and protect them, I feel so honoured that I got to experience them again before this book goes out into the world.

Lina’s character has grown so much, she has complexities in this book that give her a tangibility and realness that we hadn’t yet seen. Lina’s grief for the people lost in book 1 and how it affects her relationships with Soren, her brother and friends creates depth and texture within her, and was explored so well and with sensitivity.

There is so much I wish I could sit and gush about but I won’t because spoilers, so for now I will leave you with this. If you haven’t read The Veil, read it now because you need this book in your life.

Thank you to Ivy Brannon for allowing me to read an ARC of this before release, all opinions are my own.

Lina, King Slayer, is back again to save her brother. Only this time, he’s not in the clutches of the Nethers. He’s spellbound and the only way to free him is to eliminate the source. This brings Lina on a new epic journey with her friends beyond the veil, fighting for freedom for not only her brother.

This was the sequel I truly needed! We get quite a bit of story of what’s happened since The Veil, what has occurred with the character relationships, and picks up some pieces from the the first book. This has all the elements for a book that’s hard to put down: epic adventure, great characters, spicy love scenes, and delicious pieces of drama and humor. The only thing I’m left wanting by the end is the next book!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I feel like I knew it was coming, but that ending still had my jaw on the floor! I think when it comes to eliciting emotional reactions and shock value, Brannon has that mastered.

I did really like the Veil. But unfortunately this book was so much harder for me to get into :( The first 50% of the book felt really slow, it was kind of just building up the atmosphere and tension in Astoria, and for some reason I like really dislike Soren's character so it kind of dragged. There was a lot of things that I really liked but there were some structural and impractical things that drew me out of the story and left me frustrated for a portion of the book.

I think the author has so so much potential and creative talent, and I follow her so I'm really curious about her contemporary dark romance coming out!

This was a RIDE. At the end of book 1, I still wasn’t sure who to trust and not trust. But quickly I realize in the beginning of book 2 who is trustworthy.

The emotions drudged up with Lina’s grief was tangible and I found myself getting emotional with her. Again, her grief process, thoughts, anxieties, all so relatable. She’s my favorite imperfect fmc written to date.

All of the characters in this book grew a permanent place in my heart. The found family “flock” was everythinggggg in this one, and written so well.

And those action scenes?! They were top notch, did NOT expect how beautifully detailed they would be written. I could not put this down without straining myself to do so because I was to engulfed in every scene.

The ending THREW me, LIKE WHAT?! I wasn’t expecting it at all, but I’m here for it. A fun twist I couldn’t have predicted.

Again, idk how this series isn’t talked about more. I can’t wait to go scream at my friends to read it. 😂

I cannot WAIT for book 3.

Continuing the story of Lina Calder in The Veil, this follows her struggle against remaining obedient, and forging her own path in the world. If I had three words to describe this book they would be: powerful, emotional, and mesmerizing. Bannon’s use of lyrical prose and phenomenal storytelling will completely encompass you from page one. Lovers of romantasy with strong women who refuse to be tamed will devour this!

Also, this one is spicy! Be prepared!😉

excellent

Let me just say this book, and book one in the series are excellent. This author is truly a storytelling master and I hope she continues the series. I will say the pacing of her books is sometimes a bit rushed, but it truly doesn’t detract from the story so 5 stars all around.

Book 2 was really good, and I liked it even better than book 1. Action, spice, love, friendship - this book had it all.

The ending was a bit unexpected, and solidly moved the story from a love triangle to a why choose narrative…but I can get on bored if they both treat her like a Queen.

Lots of side characters to pay attention to. I love Xavier and want nothing but good things for him.

Ohhhh what a fantastic sequel to The Veil. Lina is discovering the consequences of her actions, and in a kingdom where the internal politics can be deadly, is the love between her and Soren enough?
I can't say too much without spoilers but I do love the gang that gets together to save the world, getting to see old friends and meet some new ones. And that ending was perfect!

I really enjoyed the journey of this book. The side chargers are just very fun. I'm not too sure about the triangle of feelings or the ending. I feel like there is a huge plot point that wasn't addressed, which was a big part of both books. 🤔
Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I'll hope for another one to wrap up all the loose threads.

An unexpected wonderful read!

I didn't expect to be sucked into this story but it quickly had its grip on me and I couldn't put it down. I gasped. I cried. I fell for both of the brooding lead male characters. So engrossing with character development that makes you want more. Beautifully written Ivy Brannon. Chefs kiss!! Please give us the next soon.

Honestly a great pick up from The Veil. There were enough areas where details were provided again so I didn't feel lost!
Lemme tell you though, I was NOT READY for the end, and I literally whooped and hollered I was so happy with how it turned out. Can't wait to read more!

Literally one of my favorite romantasy reads of all time. I can't spoil anything but this book is just...chef's kiss. Check trigger warnings but either way an amazing read!
