Shepherd Mead was one of those men dogged by success. After graduating from Washington University he went to New York to practice being an intellectual and ended up as a junior executive and then a vice-president of Benton & Bowles. His biting attacks against society only gained him greater fame and success, and he finally resigned and fled to Europe with his wife and three children in 1957. He spent a year in Geneva and then went to England in 1958.

As an author, Mead published over fifteen books, including: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Big Ball of Wax, The Admen, The Four Window Girl, How to Succeed at Business Spying By Trying and How to Succeed in Tennis Without Really Trying.

Sensacional livro de Shepherd Mead [...], só não faz uma coisa para o seu leitor: arranjar-lhe a mulher. O resto é com ele. Ensina-lhe tudo o que é preciso para que a mais esquiva beldade, por mais bela, rica e desdenhosa que seja, caia nos seus braços, soluçante de paixão e quase reduzida à condição de trapo. Naturalmente, um trapo em muito boas condições, pois, do contrário, você, dotado do poder que lhe conferirá a leitura dêste livro, não se interessará por ela.

No começo da adolescência, lendo um catálogo de livros, fiquei encantado com um título: Como Conquistar Mulheres Sem Fazer Fôrça. Com certeza não resisti e comprei: Poderia haver coisa melhor, eu pensava, à época? Se «dar» bem com um monte de mulheres. Evidente que era uma «bobagem só». Algo equivalente, poderia ser: como aprender a dirigir lendo um livro apenas e sem aula prática nenhuma. Bastaria lê-lo, e «tchan», como que por magia você sairia dirigindo. Acho que a gente precisa de tempos assim...ingênuos e simplórios.
