The week before Christmas - Brighton 1922 When Camille discovers that her estranged husband, Lord Henry (known as Harry) Divine has given her a boat house in Brighton as part of her divorce settlement, she decides to visit it before the Christmas holidays, anticipating work needing to be done after a long time away from Brighton's delights. She takes her loyal maid, Cecily, with her, and drives down to Brighton in the new motor car included in the settlement. They make a jolly twosome, Camille and Cecily, both looking forward to a few bracing days by the sea, both knowing it will be jolly cold, but still looking forward to a break away from the increasingly busy streets of London. Camille describes the boat house to Cecily in glowing terms, remembering the wonderful times she and Henry, along with their daughter, Ottilie; then a baby, spent there, playing on the beach and drinking hot chocolate before an open fire in the evenings. Cecily is eager to arrive at the seafront house, but when they enter the rather ramshackle yet quaint dwelling, something awaits them that begins a cycle of bloody murder and an unravelling mystery. Amazon Review - THE CHRISTMAS TREE MURDERS - A really lovely book set in the 1920's. Camille and her maid plus other acquaintances have the murders of three women and a horse to help the police with. Then there is also a missing ladies maid to be found. Camille has a few obstacles to get past including men who think they know best. I really enjoyed reading this book. THE BRIGHTON MURDERS is the third book in the Camille Divine Murder Mysteries series, a story of intrigue, an unravelling mystery from the past…and murder! The Camille Divine Mysteries Series will appeal to fans of Agatha Christie, Agatha Raisin, Downton Abbey, Father Brown by G K Chesterton, and the contemporary series, Midsummer Murders.
Somehow I managed to read one of the Camille Divine stories and only realised it was part of a series when I'd almost finished it. So I've gone back to the beginning and am working my way through them all....
They're an easy and entertaining read, the characters are well drawn and they conjure up the post first world war era in great detail.
The only thing that mars the enjoyment for me is the sloppy grammar, spelling and typos. These stories deserve a better proof reader!!
Finish finish reading the 3rd in the series and have preordered the 4th In the context of cozy murder mysteries What's this series apart are the characters. They are fun, complex and endearing...even when they're the bad guys. V Can't wait for the fourth in the series to arrive. From the pages of the book to the cinematic is a natural. Are you fans of Miss Fisher? I see many delightful similarities! klh
A creatively complex plot-- a feature the author has maintained throughout this series (three so far w/ the fourth coming in August 2023). Favorite characters introduced in book 1 continue their appearances in this volume, though some relationships have shifted. This is my favorite of the current three, and I would have given it five stars but for careless editing.
Brighton in the winter time, quite the difference in weather one associates with this seaside resort town. This story theme is much darker than the previous books but, relevant to today's criminal climate.
Stunning! Absolutely brilliant! The flow is fantastic and the syoryline gripping. Lady Camille and her faithful maid (and assistant) Cecily team up with the glorious Elsie West and dashing Richard Owen to smash a smuggling racket of contraband and people. Absolutely fantastic read!
So far I have been pleased with all the books in this series, I see several or I need to read, the descriptions of the landscape or of the characters bring it all to light and it becomes a movie more than a book.
Great book! Kept me reading when I should have stopped. Lady Camille and Cecily are quite the team when presented with mysteries. Criminals don't really have much of a chance with those two.
Good story, could have used more line editing. Boathouse? No garage for boats. Houseboat? No mention of it sitting in water, could be sailed and no ramp. Floating home? Again, no mention of it sitting in the water.
Another wonderful book!!! I didn't want it to end but I'm ready to start episode 4. Nothing more to say at this point. Need to download this next episode and carry on with the wonderful saga ahead.
I am enjoying this series very much. The mysteries are complex and woven around the locale which is well described so it is enjoyable to “see” the places. Also the characters are well written and seem almost real.
I got so sick of Cicely this time, acting dumb and saying stupid things. I read later novels before this one so I know she gets better. But maybe I’ll give lady divine a rest for a whike
In this installment of the series, Cecily, Elsie and Camille have critical roles to play in thwarting a lethal smuggling operation in the seemingly sleepy seaside resort of Brighton in the off-season.
I have to be honest and say that even before I was half-way through the book, I was bored! There is usually one book in a series that I don't like and I'm hoping this is it and that things will improve with the next one.
While not a perfect book, this was a good mystery. Lots of interesting characters who you cared about. A good mystery with many moving parts. The story arc moved smartly on!
A definite work of fiction looking like the author was on a tangent, and became totally unbelievable for fiction. Thank you for your words Andrea Hicks. :-)
I really like how the maid has grown stronger and the romance blossomed evermore. I love these stories , very thrilling an give you a warm cozy feeling.
