I read this book when I was little and for some reason read it more than once. I guess I liked it back then. This book is an okay book to read. I would recommend this book to kids now because of all the diseases going around. There is not plot line to this book. The story takes place at a public schoolhouse. Protagonist: Louise Antagonist: Alex Alex goes to public school for the first time. Before he arrived it got around that Alex, the kid with aids was going to attend their school. After he arrived, the other students wanted nothing to do with Alex. Having no knowledge on Aids, they were afraid to be around and play with him because they thought they would catch aids. Spoiler Alert: Alex and Michael entered a contest for writing the best poem. Alex wrote a mean poem about Mrs. Zanes, a teacher they disliked. Louise, a girl in their class stole the poem from them and took it to Mrs. Zanes to get them in trouble. The next day their teacher had a talk with them and made them rewrite another poem for the contest. Michael invited a few friends to his birthday sleepover. Michael and Alex stayed up late at night and Michael was askin Alex about aids. Michael asked him if he ever thought about dying. Alex Said "yes, sometimes".
The teachers have little compassion for Alex and blast the fact he has AIDS out like it’s public business. I know this was written in the nineties, but that doesn’t excuse it from being a mess.
Alex is new to the classroom and he thinks he can do things the others can't simply because he has AIDS. He soon learns that he's expected to be just like the rest of the pupils. It's nice to read a book about AIDS that doesn't deal with the panic of it, but rather who the people are that are dealing with it. The book is written for any age group and has nice illustrations. Overall a nice addition to anyone's library collection.
Alex was a fourth grade kid with AIDS. He was new at school. His parents decided to share his secret. The nurse uses to talk about the illness and the misunderstanding about it. At school he found amazing thinks to do.
This book caught my attention as fast as it lost it. It was a very different subject for a children's book, but the book wasn't very interesting to me. It wasn't a great story overall.
