A family saga trilogy covering the passing of the twin curse, the 'mixing of the blood' and the 'odd child out' moving down the generations. The trilogy is based on the author's memoirs but reading like fiction, Patchwork Years books 1 and 2 have been favourably compared to Catherine Cookson novels.
Book 2 continues the twin themes set out in Book 1 the 'mixing of the blood' from the birth of Grandfather in 1854, the bastard child of a Scottish aristocrat and a chambermaid, and that of the 'rejected child' continuing down the generations. Part of a trilogy it is a factual account of events through a period of tumultuous change as seen through the author's eyes. "Now it was her turn to be old. If she put together all that lay behind her, joined now in a pattern of Time's own making, what a patchwork that would make …"
Continuing the story of Sarah, the third generation, as she leaves her husband and with four children begins the difficult life of a single parent. After years spent around the world as a Service wife in a hasty and difficult marriage her pursuit of true love, and at the same time independence and the freedom to be her own person, takes her to and fro, England, Wales, France and back again, as she struggles her way up the economic ladder. Whether or not she finally succeeds, and in what fashion, is told in the last part of this trilogy.
This is better than the first book and carries the story right through to the 70's and a tad later with Sarah's grandchildren and continuing the saga of the unwanted child. Not going to give any of the story away...definately a recommended buy......I await in anticipation for the 3rd book.
